Even breathing is breathing in and out for the same amount of time. It helps calm your brain and body when you breathe like this. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts – repeat 4 times or until the end of the song. Your child may not be able to do this, but just being near you as you do it will help him or her to practice this type of breathing and eventually s/he’ll be able to do it with you.

You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.

  • Focus on Who We Love

    Materials:

A comfortable place to lie down or sit

Practice this with your child, maybe as you nurse or rock to sleep, and then help your child say it when s/he is older. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in and say, “I love ___”. Then breathe out and say the name of someone you love. (Inhale = I love, Exhale = Mommy). It can be like a prayer for each person, or a way to send positive energy to the people you love.

You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.

  • Positive Self-Talk

    Materials:

A place to lie down or sit

    comfortably.

This is a good way to practice having a positive inner voice. Do this yourself, while you nurse or rock your baby, then when s/he’s older, help him or her try this themselves as a calming activity. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in and say, “I love ___”. Breathe out and say something you love about yourself.

You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.

  • Pots and Pans

    Materials:

Some pots or bowls or pans

    and wooden or plastic mixing

    spoons

Any music will do. Try some Big Band style, like “In The Mood” or “Take the A-Train”

The purpose of this is to make some music and have fun. Put on some fun music, like Big Band music, and play along on pots and pans like drums. You can also sing

    your own songs!

  • Homemade Kazoo

    Materials:

A plastic comb and some tissue

    or wax paper

    Try combs like these.

Grab a comb, fold tissue or wax paper over the teeth, press it against your lips and hum through your Kazoo! Hum along to your favorite songs. Humming helps keep

    your sinuses healthy!

  • Homemade Shakers

    Materials:

    Empty and dry plastic water

bottles with the lids and dried

    beans, uncooked rice, or beads.

Twist and Shout by the Beatles is a good song for shaking!

Put dried beans, or uncooked rice, or beads, or a combination of these into a plastic water bottle. Put on the lid, then shake and sing!

You can change the words to Twist and Shout by singing:Shake it up (name of child), Twist and shout

C’mon, c’mon, c’mon (name of child)Come on and work it on out!

Shake it way up high; now shake it way down lowShake it any way you want to

You’ve just got to let it go

  • Marching Band

    Materials:

None are required, but some pot lids make great cymbals and

plastic containers can make great drums!

Pass out some instruments or pot lids and plastic containers and march to the music!

Singing your own march music encourages children to move along. You could even make up a “Putting Our Toys Away” march to encourage kids to move their kids from one room to another room.

Here’s an example of a clean-up song (lyrics): Pick up, pick up, follow me. Follow me down the hallway. Put away, put away, back down the hallway we go! Do it again!!

Suggested Music:Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa76 Trombones from The Music ManImperial March by John Williams

  • One Elephant Went Out to Play

    Materials: None are required.

Make sure that there is enough space to move like elephants.

This is a fun song for movement. Start with one person wandering around the room, acting like an elephant. When cued by the song, add another person to the walk. You can link using hands only, or you could complicate the movement by sticking one hand between your legs for the other person to hold onto. (This is similar to how elephants hold each other’s tails while moving.

Keep adding people until you run out of people for the line.

Humming is a great way to make music. Some people can hum entire songs. Other people hum on one note. Challenge your child to close his or her lips and then make music.

    Materials:

Music and lots of space to jump

    where you won’t bump

When the eggs are finished, shake them along with your favorite music or try to find eggs that sound similar to each other.

Inch by Inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow, All it takes is a rake and a hoe, and a piece of fertile ground.Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow.Someone warm them from below, ‘til the rain comes tumbling down.

Pullin’ weeds and picking stones, man is made of dreams and bones.Feel the need to grow my own, ‘cause the time is close at hand.Grain for grain, sun and rain, find my way in nature’s chain. To my body and my brain, to the music of the land. Chorus

Plant your rows straight and long, temper them with prayer and songMother Earth will make you strong, if you give her love and care.Old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder treeIn my garden I’m as free as that feathered thief up there. Chorus

    plan.

Sometimes, it’s fun to ask questions and see what answers you hear in return. This song asks the question, “What will we do when we go outside?”

What will we do when we all go out? When we all go out. When we all go out. What will we do when we all go out? When we go outside to play.

Add your answers into the song. Use the same melody.

We’re going to play some basketball, some basketball, some basketball. We’re going to play some basketball, when we go outside today.
