Take turns being the song leader. Change how fast or slow you sing. Make the “stop” times longer and shorter. Add in different things to shake (for example, “shake your hands, shake ‘em, shake ‘em, stop!). Don’t be surprised if the song ends in giggles.

If you would like, you can use music like Trashing the Camp from Disney’s Tarzan as accompaniment, but often your own music is more than enough!! Keep up the band until you all get tired. Try different types of containers to see if there are different sounds.

Pick up toys and put in the box. Do it quickly, in the box. Keep on going ‘til we’re through. You help me and I’ll help you. Pick up toys and put in the box. Toys are put away in the box!

Belly Breathing
Materials:
A place to lie down on your
back
Find a place to lie down. Relax your body and pay attention to your breathing. See how your stomach moves up and down when you are relaxed? That is belly breathing. Breathe deeply and with your stomach movements for a couple of minutes.
Try standing up and still breathe with your belly movement. Can you move your stomach when you breathe in now? If you can, keep breathing deeply. If you can’t, lie down again and practice belly breathing on your back.
Keep trying to belly breathe while sitting. It takes practice
You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.
-
Emotion Dance
Materials:
Music and lots of space to jump where you won’t bump other people!!
OPTIONAL: Emotion pictures
The reason for doing this dance is to get in touch with how our body feels when we feel different emotions. The music that you use isn’t as important as how you act during each emotion.
If you decide to use background music, try to find music that either has no emotional connotation or something that is definitely associated with an emotion.
Choose an emotion card and dance that emotion (there is no wrong way to move). Challenge kids and yourself to change your movements as you change emotions.
Suggested Songs for the Emotion Dance:Happy by Pharrell WilliamsIt’s Not That Easy Being Green by Kermit the FrogWhat I’m Feeling by Glyn LehmannWorld music by Mickey Hart –look for music from Planet Drum or Supralingua

Background music to groove
to – your choice!
Choose a couple of movements that you do often. These movements can be chores or fun things or a variety. Try doing these movements at regular speed. Then, choose either fast motion or slow motion. Do the movements again at the different speed.
For example, choose putting laundry away in the room. Try picking up the laundry basket and taking it to the room in slow motion. Then, do it again at super-fast speed. Make sounds to indicate whether you are moving fast or slow.

Decorate your voice phone with contact paper or stickers. If you are really ambitious, you can paint your voice phone. Make sure you let the paint dry completely before you use the voice phones next to your ear!

You can sing about your love for your baby, or write a love song from your baby to his or her sibling, or from big sister or brother to baby. If you need a melody, try Mary Had a Little Lamb.
-
Claire De Lune
Materials:
A place to lie down on your
back. Something to play music
on.
Practice Belly Breathing while listening to this song. You can also listen to it while blowing some bubbles to give a visual relaxation aid and some deep and slow breathing practice as you try to blow big bubbles.
This is a great song by Claude Debussy, which is often used on relaxation CDs. You can also find it on YouTube.
-
Even Breathing
Materials:
A place to lie down on your
back
Even breathing is breathing in and out for the same amount of time. It helps calm your brain and body when you breathe like this. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts – repeat 4 times or until the end of the song. Your child may not be able to do this, but just being near you as you do it will help him or her to practice this type of breathing and eventually s/he’ll be able to do it with you.
You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.
-
Focus on Who We Love
Materials:
A comfortable place to lie down or sit
Practice this with your child, maybe as you nurse or rock to sleep, and then help your child say it when s/he is older. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in and say, “I love ___”. Then breathe out and say the name of someone you love. (Inhale = I love, Exhale = Mommy). It can be like a prayer for each person, or a way to send positive energy to the people you love.
You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.
-
Positive Self-Talk
Materials:
A place to lie down or sit
comfortably.
This is a good way to practice having a positive inner voice. Do this yourself, while you nurse or rock your baby, then when s/he’s older, help him or her try this themselves as a calming activity. Using Belly Breathing, breathe in and say, “I love ___”. Breathe out and say something you love about yourself.
You don’t really need any music for this experience, but you could use some slow, quiet music to help you relax.
-
Pots and Pans
Materials:
Some pots or bowls or pans
and wooden or plastic mixing
spoons
Any music will do. Try some Big Band style, like “In The Mood” or “Take the A-Train”
The purpose of this is to make some music and have fun. Put on some fun music, like Big Band music, and play along on pots and pans like drums. You can also sing
your own songs!
-
Homemade Kazoo
Materials:
A plastic comb and some tissue
or wax paper
Try combs like these.
Grab a comb, fold tissue or wax paper over the teeth, press it against your lips and hum through your Kazoo! Hum along to your favorite songs. Humming helps keep
your sinuses healthy!
http://www.amazon.com/Vidal-Sassoon-5-inch-Pocket-Combs/dp/B007OT1XWE/ref=sr_1_7_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1459712711&sr=1-7
-
Homemade Shakers
Materials:
Empty and dry plastic water
bottles with the lids and dried
beans, uncooked rice, or beads.
Twist and Shout by the Beatles is a good song for shaking!
Put dried beans, or uncooked rice, or beads, or a combination of these into a plastic water bottle. Put on the lid, then shake and sing!
You can change the words to Twist and Shout by singing:Shake it up (name of child), Twist and shout
C’mon, c’mon, c’mon (name of child)Come on and work it on out!
Shake it way up high; now shake it way down lowShake it any way you want to
You’ve just got to let it go
-
Marching Band
Materials:
None are required, but some pot lids make great cymbals and
plastic containers can make great drums!
Pass out some instruments or pot lids and plastic containers and march to the music!
Singing your own march music encourages children to move along. You could even make up a “Putting Our Toys Away” march to encourage kids to move their kids from one room to another room.
Here’s an example of a clean-up song (lyrics): Pick up, pick up, follow me. Follow me down the hallway. Put away, put away, back down the hallway we go! Do it again!!
Suggested Music:Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa76 Trombones from The Music ManImperial March by John Williams
-
One Elephant Went Out to Play
Materials: None are required.
Make sure that there is enough space to move like elephants.
This is a fun song for movement. Start with one person wandering around the room, acting like an elephant. When cued by the song, add another person to the walk. You can link using hands only, or you could complicate the movement by sticking one hand between your legs for the other person to hold onto. (This is similar to how elephants hold each other’s tails while moving.
Keep adding people until you run out of people for the line.

-
Freeze Dancing
Materials:
Music for dancing (either
live or recorded)
Dance when the music happens and freeze when the music stops!
If you are using live music, stop your singing to indicate times to freeze. If you are using recorded music, take turns starting and stopping the music.
Use your favorite music for this dance!
-
Jumping, Jumping
Materials:
Space to move around
Use this song to get the wiggles out.
Change the word of the song to different movements. For example, “Walking, walking, walk, walk, walk.”
Suggested movements (but make up your own as well!): running, hopping, sliding, crawling, rolling… the options go on and on.
Click on the Icon for Audio
-
Humming
Materials:
Nothing at all!
Humming is a great way to make music. Some people can hum entire songs. Other people hum on one note. Challenge your child to close his or her lips and then make music.
You can play “Name That Tune” while humming. See if your child can identify familiar songs when you hum and then change roles. See if you can figure out what your child is humming.
Audio or visual files for use –links and music
-
Name That Tune
Materials:
None – just use your voice
Take turns singing the melodies of songs that everyone in your family knows. Try to avoid singing words.
Some song suggestions: Children’s songs (Twinkle, Twinkle; Old MacDonald Has a Farm); Popular songs on the radio; Sesame Street songs; Television Theme Songs – anything else your family knows…
You might want to make a list of songs that everyone knows to help when you are trying to think of a song to sing or hum…
-
This Old Man
Materials:
None needed, but you could use number

Make Shaker Egg Instruments
Materials:
Plastic eggs, beans or rice or beads, hot glue
or duct tape
Place a small amount of beans or rice or beads into an egg. An adult should be in charge of gluing the two parts of the egg together. Kids can help with the tape (if that’s what you use).
Make lots of egg shakers with different amounts of things inside. Try different things to put inside.
When the eggs are finished, shake them along with your favorite music or try to find eggs that sound similar to each other.
You can tape spoons to the outside of the egg to make maracas. Maracas are often easier to hold for little ones.

The Garden Song
Materials:
Song Lyrics and your voice!
Inch by Inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow, All it takes is a rake and a hoe, and a piece of fertile ground.Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless these seeds I sow.Someone warm them from below, ‘til the rain comes tumbling down.
Pullin’ weeds and picking stones, man is made of dreams and bones.Feel the need to grow my own, ‘cause the time is close at hand.Grain for grain, sun and rain, find my way in nature’s chain. To my body and my brain, to the music of the land. Chorus
Plant your rows straight and long, temper them with prayer and songMother Earth will make you strong, if you give her love and care.Old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder treeIn my garden I’m as free as that feathered thief up there. Chorus

Harry Belafonte sings the best version. I usually leave out the verse about drinking rum when singing with kids, and I like to repeat the chorus a lot.
