Damian Warner won the gold medal in men’s decathlon at the Canadian Pan am games, breaking both Canadian and Pan am games records. Warner led the decathlon from wire to wire, finishing first in the 100 metres, 400 metres, 110-metre hurdles, long jump and the 1,500 metres.

hile the athletes focused on perfec-tion, Bombardier was also on its marks during the

2015 Pan am games. it played a vital role in ensuring the overall perform-ance of the transportation system in the greater Toronto area (gTa), which contributed to the event running smoothly.

Bombardier, which provides fleet maintenance, management and oper-ations for customers around the world, maintains and operates two major transit modes within the gTa for cus-tomer Metrolinx. Passenger volumes were particularly high on go Transit during the Pan am games. it moved

over 200,000 passengers a day, while uP Express train passenger numbers were a little down, but Metrolinx had expected that.

“While not directly linked to Pan am, we had a huge part to play in its suc-cess and our team worked tirelessly to ensure that things ran smoothly on both go and uP Express,” said Mat-thew Byrne, vice President, Service Execution, Bombardier.

as well as providing maintenance and oper-ations, a key aspect of Bombardier’s involve-ment with both uP Express and go Transit is to provide guest Service representatives (gSrs) on the former, and Customer Service ambassadors (CSas) on the latter.

“on uP Express, the role of Bombardier gSrs is to perform all the front-line customer service activities such as ticketing, station platform guidance and passenger assistance, as well as concierge services such as wayfinding, pro-viding special event information, and even rec-ommending dining and sightseeing options,” said Bill Brunet, Bombardier Transportation’s Head of Services Development.

For the go service, CSas are focused on the safety of the passengers as well as provid-ing a customer service role. The Bombardier CSa team has been credited with count-less acts of outstanding customer service and even cited for providing vital lifesaving measures for passengers on the go service.

at Bombardier’s central Rivers main-tenance facility in the uk, technicians no longer conduct routine brake pad measurements. work is also under way to approve the removal of simi-lar inspection tasks such as under-frame, roof and pantograph inspections for other Bombardier sites around the world. The wayside automatic visual inspection system (avi system) uses a combination of high-resolution cam-eras and lasers for 360-degree visual

inspection and to measure compon-ent parameters. This condition data is then used to predict remaining life and sent to the customized asset manage-ment system BOMBARDIER MAXIMO, to communicate the maintenance need to technicians. “Requiring roof access for inspections is time-consuming, and there’s always the chance of an acci-dent. The avi system allows us to mini-mize the need for roof access and get better condition data at the same time,”

o how does Bombardier deliver fleet manage-ment services success-fully to customers? it’s achieved through the Bombardier Fleet Man-

agement System (BFMS) – a suite of operations and maintenance integrated tools, processes and global experience to supply end-to-end solutions for the service delivery teams.

Such joined-up processes and tools are vital to a successful operation. The most recent ground-breaking example of this is Bombardier’s automatic visual inspection System (avi System). it was originally deployed on the gautrain pro-ject in South africa and is now rolling out on projects worldwide. The avi System uses the award-winning BOMBARDIER ORBITA decision-making engine to link product data acquisition tools to main-tenance work orders to dramatically improve the quality of product condi-tion data. The avi System was approved for operation on the voyager fleet in the uK during January 2015, becoming the first passenger operation in the world with a fully automated inspection of brake pads with no human intervention.

The associated reduction in vehicle downtime and improvements in inspec-tion frequency radically affect the usable life of the brake-pad material. These improvements reduce operat-

ing costs and environmental impact, allowing Bombardier service teams to concentrate their experience on improving fleet performance.

ne of Bombardier’s latest innovations in the Services field is FlexCare. With this inte-grated maintenance management model,

Bombardier takes over full respon-sibility for the fleet maintenance, start-ing with the creation of a fleet-specific maintenance plan for the contract per-iod. Based on that, detailed material demand planning is performed to ensure it has the right amount of high quality material at the right time and place to perform the maintenance work. The operator’s maintenance per-sonnel perform maintenance work in its own depots according to Bombardier’s maintenance plan.

“FlexCare guarantees the customer the best possible maintenance of its fleet and a clear and transparent fore-cast of the maintenance costs, which gives the customer budget certainty for

the contract period,” said Michael Foh-rer, vice President, Services Execution, region Central/Eastern Europe and CiS, Bombardier Transportation.

Customer linz ag linien in austria signed up for a 16-year FlexCare main-tenance contract to add to an order of 23 FLEXITY outlook trams in 2009. The tram operators of innsbruck and vienna followed 2012 and 2015. “The advan-tage for us is that the maintenance price is fixed for the next 24 years, aside from price escalation and inflation rate. That means, we have agreed on fixed prices for the different maintenance works and, for example, we already know what a wheel exchange will cost 24 years from now,” said günter Steinbauer, CEo of Wiener linien, vienna’s transport authority.

journeys across the country. Bombardier, in partnership with ansaldoBreda, recently delivered the

latest generation of the high speed train to italian rail operator Trenitalia. The frecciarossa 1000 is

even faster and even more comfortable than its predecessors. we boarded the train and accompanied

its passengers on their journey from naples to the expo 2015 in milan.

Three years ago, when Bombardier Transportation, together with its partner and its client, first presented a mock-up of the new v300ZEFiro high speed train at the trade fair innoTrans 2012, it could already be sensed how popular this latest generation of high speed trains would become among the passengers. and indeed, soon after putting the high-comfort, high-tech train – known as Frecciarossa 1000 in italy – in service in June this year, it has become a giant hit with the public. This should come as no surprise, as the train features a high level of comfort alongside a reputation for punctuality, safety and reliability, while travelling at unrivalled speed – more than befitting the name ‘red arrow’. This cluster of favourable points is not least due to the fact that Bombardier Transportation not only manufactures the 50 trains ordered but is also responsible for their comprehensive maintenance in partner-ship with ansaldoBreda.

Today, passengers can travel from Naples in the south to the northern ital-ian city of Milan in under five hours. The first of 50 latest-generation high speed trains was put in service perfectly in time for the Expo 2015. The inaugural model is named in honour of the recently deceased italian sprinter legend Pietro Mennea, who won the world record for the 200 metres and still holds the Euro-pean record for this distance – an apt name indeed for the ‘red arrow’, which is faster than any other train in Eur-ope. at the moment, the train only con-nects major italian cities, but links to various cities in Europe could follow in the future.

Reaching the destination of our Italian rail journey, Milano centrale. the main train station (opened in 1846) was designed by French architect Louis-Jules Bouchot. Its architectural style was reminiscent of parisian buildings of that period. the Red arrow meanwhile travels on to turin.

Bombardier Transportation is in charge of project management, product development as well as the manufacturing of the bogies and propulsion systems. The testing, homo logation and commissioning of the first five trains are also the responsibility of Bombardier Transportation.

50 trainshave been ordered by Italian rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane from the consortium of Bombardier Transportation and AnsaldoBreda. each train has a length of around 200 metres. The total volume of the contract is around 1.5 billion euros. Bombardier Transportation has also signed a ten-year maintenance contract for the trains.

Mr. nair, do you consider yourself a futurologist?

Chandran nair: No. For me, the word futurologist typically describes someone from the West, suggesting that technical solutions (gadgets) will save the world. our world in asia is different, and so i do not agree with the futurologist view.

according to the Un, 75% of the world’s popula-tion will live in big cities in 2050. Do you think urbani-sation will change societies profoundly?

Chandran nair: The belief is that cities are creators of prosperity and there-fore the key to modernity. But look at what has hap-pened in asia. Most cities are extremely polluted, having adopted this urbanisation myth as a path to prosperity. Many people who migrate to big cities for work end up in unlivable slums because,

Chandran nair: Public transportation is essential. But cities in asia have under-priced mobility so far and subsidized private transpor-tation. The real costs of pri-vate transportation need to be reflected in policies, e.g. taxes on it should rise so that public transportation could be supported instead and the private car made a lux-ury item. Mass transportation serves the collective inter-est. it leads to high produc-tivity. i live in Hong Kong; i don’t have a car and i don’t need one. The metro sys-tem in Hong Kong is one of the world’s best. i can make 6 appointments in differ-ent areas of the city in one day and will never be late. i couldn’t do that in other asian cities today.

Where do you see the main challenges for communities/countries to provide mobil-ity/public transportation in the future?

Chandran nair: Many asian cities are late in plan-ning for public transportation and can’t afford an extensive and high quality transport system like in Hong Kong in the near future. also, space in cities is limited, which often confines the realisation of public transportation. Cities need to start planning for a future where mass transpor-tation is the only option for the majority.

with the kind of jobs they find, they cannot afford proper dwellings. We need to offer decently paid work and provide proper educa-tion, health and infrastruc-ture. We need smaller, work-able and more livable cities. Why should we make large cities that are already a mess even larger and messier?

Will those 25% who will remain living in rural areas be “left behind”?

Chandran nair: i don’t say that we should reverse urbanisation but it needs to slow down. We should stop emptying the countryside, strengthen villages and rural development, and appreci-ate the economic value of the countryside.

Mobility is already a key topic in megacities world-wide today and will be even more in the future. What could/should be done to

pain’s high speed network is considered to be one of the best worldwide. Currently, it com-prises four main high speed corridors and has a total length of 2,321 kilometres, making it the lar-gest high speed network in Europe and second-largest worldwide. Further lines are already

under construction or planned. The priority of expanding the high speed network has, once again, been confirmed by the Minister of Public Works this year by announcing to contract the supply of 40 new high speed trains, plus 35 years of mainten-ance, which will mean an investment of around 3 billion euros.

Transportation in Spain is also marked by a high degree of inte-gration between its long distance railway services and inner-city metro systems. Most major cities already have good metro or tram networks. Some are expanding their systems and services while other cities are doing feasibility studies to develop new rail systems or to use wireless and fast-charging e-mobility solutions like BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE.

“in addition, we can visualize the simulation results of heat, cold, air cur-rents and material deformations, as well as space requirements for pas-sengers,” says Dietz. accordingly, any modifications require only a few bits and bytes to be rearranged, as opposed to million-dollar parts, making both the assembly process and the final product less prone to errors.
