Cranbrook Tourist and Business Promotion Group Project receiving funding:

Cranbrook Show 2015

How to support the Cranbrook Tourist and Business Promotion Group:

We welcome volunteers to help us organise and run events.

A bit about us:

The Cranbrook Tourist & Business Promotion Group has a role within the Cranbrook community for organising events throughout the year for the local community and also those visiting the region for the wildflower season or the Bendigo Bank Art & Craft Trail exhibits, as well as the Hidden Treasures Bloom Festival. In association with the Shire of Cranbrook, we organise an Annual Shire of Cranbrook Photographic Exhibition as part of Art Trail and Bloom Festival, held alternately in Cranbrook and Frankland River.

The Cranbrook Show is also an Annual event which focuses on entertainment for families and displays and stall to interest the wider community. The Show is held on Frederick Square and is free entry with some free sponsored entertainment for children which allows families to come and enjoy the day without the cost.

We have also over the years encouraged and supported the organisation of events which are ‘just fun to do’ such as the “Boots to Suits” Year of the Farmer Ball in 2012. These events are ‘let’s do it’ occasions – when a group of people not necessarily associated with any organisation are prepared to organise an even just for the fun of it.

We provide some ‘seed funding’ which was originally $1000 from the Tambellup-Cranbrook Community Bank and is managed through our bank account. It provides funds for the initial costs and over the years has risen over $5000 after replacing the initial seed funds ready for the next event, the last recipient being the Cranbrook Sub Branch of St John Ambulance.

A bit about us:

Kendenup Primary is a Level 4B school located in the Southwest Regional Education District. It is located approximately 18km north of Mount Barker and 70 km north of Albany. Kendenup was originally a town that relied on agriculture and orchards however within the last fifteen years there has been a sizable shift in the region. The Kendenup community still retains an agricultural and viticulture focus however only a small percentage of our families come from farming backgrounds. Many of our families have moved to the area for a lifestyle change and are involved with the mining industry (FIFO), local (Kendenup, Mt Barker & Albany) businesses and private enterprise. Kendenup Primary continues to pride itself in providing a caring and inclusive learning environment for the students, staff and parents.

Mount Barker Girl Guides

Project receiving funding:

Running costs and State Jamboree

A bit about us:

The Australian Guide programme embodies the four elements and seven fundamentals. Girl Guides are recognised through the Girl recognition system, which includes badges, awards and challenges.

The Australian Guide programme recognises that all girls are capable of implementing their own programme. The philosophy of the programme is based on the importance of the process used in working towards an outcome rather than on the activity itself.

By encouraging the girls to be fully involved in identifying options, making decisions, planning, implementing and evaluating their activities the Australian Guide programme helps them to grow into confident, self-respecting and responsible community members.

Mount Barker Speedway Club Inc.

Project receiving funding:

1. Bendigo Bank Junior Feature -The club host a feature event annually for the Junior drivers to compete in. Apart from the annual Open Championships this event is held in high regard amongst drivers. Local drivers have the opportunity to compete against visiting drivers from other clubs which in turn develops friendships amongst drivers & family members.

2. Water Catchment - This year’s grant funding will assist the Club to facilitate the capture and storage of water to overcome the ongoing water shortage by purchasing storage tanks. Adequate track preparation is critical to the safety and enjoyment of speedway racing for drivers.

3. Vouchers to assist with fundraising raffles - Raffles are held at each race meeting to raise funds toward upgrading equipment and facilities. The current major focus is on improving water catchment facilities and electronic lapscoring equipment. Monthly raffles enable the club to raise between $300 and $800 per raffle.

What the group does:

The club provides a safe, professional and fun venue for speedway enthusiasts to both participate in

and spectate motor sport.

The club operates within the rules and guidelines of the governing bodies Speedway Australia and

WA Saloon Car Federation.

Junior drivers commence racing at the age of 10 years, restricted to a 1200cc engine capacity. Other

divisions racing on a regular basis include Street Stocks, Super Sedans and Production Sedans. The

“diehard” speedway drivers continue racing between the ages of 60 and 70 years of age.

How to support the group:

All prospective members must be proposed and seconded by an existing financial club member.

New membership applications are approved by the Executive committee. Members are required to

sign a code of conduct annually.

Volunteering is encouraged and welcomed by the club. On race days up to 40 volunteers are

required to effectively run the meeting including race stewards, gate, canteen & bar staff,

commentators, lapscorers, points scorers, toilet cleaners, water truck drivers, grader drivers, vehicle

scrutineers, pit marshalls etc. The club is especially grateful to the local St John Ambulance and Fire

Brigade volunteers who attend each race meeting. The club gives volunteers the opportunity to

commit and belong to an organisation and to feel a sense of worth and accomplishment for their

volunteering efforts.

Page 21: Mount Barker Community Bendigo Bank Mount Barker Co ...€¦ · Mount Barker Co-operative Ltd Shire of Plantagenet . ... Rhianna Reynolds ... School libraries today compete for attention

Where and when the group conducts activities:

The racing season commences with a scheduled practice day in September followed by at least one

race meeting per month from October through to May. Race meetings are held at “Les Gorman

Park”, Porongurup Road, and Mount Barker.

A bit about us:

The Mt Barker Speedway Club is one of three remaining day time race venues within WA, and has

developed a strong reputation within the wider speedway fraternity for providing a professionally

run race venue promoting and encouraging a family friendly culture. For the younger kids who are

not interested in watching the speedway action there is a safe fenced off playground area developed

around the theme of speedway.

The club operates solely on a strong volunteer base consisting of members and non members. On

average we have 115 social and competitor members per annum.

The club holds a feature event for each racing division throughout the season and invites other

divisions such as Sprint cars, V8 Dirt Modifieds, AMCR’s and Modified Sedans to hold rounds at

our club to enhance the entertainment value for spectators. The popular annual demolition derby,

ladies, mechanics and officials race is held on our last meeting each year and draws a huge crowd of

spectators. Everyone loves a bit of bashing and crashing.

The club is extremely grateful to the surrounding businesses who provide support annually by way

of advertising in the race day program and on the infield wall and to others who sponsor race day

events. One can often hear the commentator at speedway citing “support the supporters that

support your sport, because without their support you would have no sport”.

event. It has maintained strong relationships with a variety of Sponsors and is well supported by

the Wine industry, with entries of over 1100 wines from 180 producers annually. Local support has

been gained this year from Mt Barker Co-operative, Shire of Plantagenet, Smith-Thornton

Producers, Mt Barker and Districts Agricultural Society, Albany Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, Mt Barker Free Range Chicken, as well as many other businesses. See full list of Sponsors

YouthCARE Mount Barker

Project funding will support:

The Chaplaincy program at Mt Barker Community College, Frankland, Tambellup, Kendenup and

Cranbrook Primary Schools

How to support Youthcare Mount Barker:

There are many ways that community members are able to support YouthCARE and Chaplaincy at

Mt Barker Community College. Anyone is welcome to attend the monthly meeting just to see what

happens or to join in on a regular basis. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with fundraising

events and prayer is another way of supporting the work of the committee and the chaplains.

Community members can offer to participate in supporting the college based program Breakfast

Club and in the School Volunteer Program which involves being matched with and mentoring a

student. YouthCARE also gratefully accepts financial support from individuals and from local

businesses.

Where and when the group meets:

The committee meets every third Thursday of each month during the school term in the staff room

of Mt Barker Community College at 7.00pm. We are a committee who are dedicated to ensuring

that the chaplains remain in our schools. Our members include representatives from different

Churches and the College. At present Deb Smith works four days at Mt Barker Community

College and Paul Ritchie works two days at Mt Barker Community College and a half day at

Frankland, Cranbrook, Tambellup and Kendenup Primary Schools.

Deb and Paul provide a support role in the schools, assisting with the social, emotional, mental, and

physical wellbeing of students, staff and families. Deb and Paul are both trained in Primary Critical

Incidents Response and are available if there is any disaster in and around the Shire of Plantagenet.

Some of the programs the Chaplains run include Breakfast Club, School Volunteer Program, Youth

Empowerment Program, Chess Club, Rock and Water, Drumbeat and various lunchtime activities.

They also provide additional practical help for teaching and administrative staff at the schools.

YouthCARE’s annual fundraising events include: Evening pool parties utilising the pool, the Bush

Dance in the Plantagenet District Hall, our Concert featuring Albany City Wind Ensemble

supported by the College Band in the Recreation Centre, lunch time discos at the College, street

stalls and/or wood raffles in the foyer of our local IGA and participation at the Anglican Market on

the first Saturday of every month with a sausage sizzle and jumble stall.

A bit about us:

YouthCARE Mt Barker needs your support because without our committee there would be no

chaplains in the College. Fundamentally, chaplains support the Department of Education’s Core

Shared Values, developing the whole child by offering support and opportunities for social,

emotional, mental, physical and spiritual growth regardless of age, ethnic background or religion.

Further we believe Chaplains play a vital role in times of personal crisis, relationship problems,

stress and bereavement. Besides being available to support our children and youth they are in a

wonderful position to support staff and parents as the need arises.

One only has to speak to our chaplains to become aware of the need for their supportive role and

simultaneously you will feel confident that they are able to impact positively on the lives of those

with whom they make contact. Al those who have had interactions with our chaplains in a time of

need or crisis would endorse the benefit of their role in the College. The whole community benefits

from chaplaincy service as our young people develop with confidence, into caring citizens who are

proud of themselves and thoughtful of others.

YouthCARE does receive a small amount of funding from State and Federal Governments but the

majority of our financial support comes from the College itself, the Shires of Plantagenet and

Cranbrook, Churches, corporate sponsorship and fundraising within the local community. All

funding raised by YouthCARE Mt Barker is used to support our chaplains in our college and

community. Since the chaplaincy is funded by the community it supports, YouthCARE needs your

support, individually and collectively as a community to maintain its sound financial position each

and every year so that the chaplaincy program can continue.
