The climbing scanner MWS-1 This type of non-destructive testing is to be carried out on tank shell or pipe wall, to provide information on plate/pipe thickness and corrosion damage (wall-loss) as well as material defects on both internal and external sides of the plates/pipes. The MWS-1 inspection tool consists of a 16-channel motorised-scanner and a computer. The motorised- scanner is installed on the crawler with magnetic wheels and four wheels drive. The widths of these scanners are 112 mm (approximately 4.5 inches). This equipment can climb on the wall of the tank up and down, or move along the pipe, and it inspects a 112 mm width stripe. Corrosion map is generated automatically, values are verified by UT inspectors. Areas of application: • To scan tank shells. • To scan above ground pipes, flowlines. • At excavated sections of underground pipelines. • Verification of in-line inspection. The system indicates in real time and provide corrosion maps: • Large area thinning caused by general corrosion or erosion. • Spotty, scattered pitting type corrosion. • Mechanical damage. Brief Inspection MethodThe motor operated scanner moves over the entire surface of the tank, while injecting an electromagnetic field into the steel plate. The system measures the changes in the electro-magnetic field as the scanner pass a flaw in the metal. The defects and the corrosion maps are calculated from these collected values.
