    HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Proposed by Abraham Maslow (1908 1970)

According to Maslow, some needs are more

basic of powerful than others. Motives and goals influence what we do and

    how we expend our energy.

Once these physiological needs have been

satisfied, they are no longer a motivator. Theindividual moves up to the next level.

Safety needs at work could include physical

safety (ex: protective clothing) as well as

    protection against unemployment, loss of

    income through sickness etc)

    Motivation and Hierarchy of

    Needs

Esteem needs are about being given

recognition for a job well done. They reflectthe fact that many people seek the esteem

and respect of others. A promotion at work

    might achieve this

    LIMITATIONS WITH THE MASLOW

    MODEL

    1. Individual behavior seems to respond to

several needs not just one 2. The same need may cause quite different

    behavior in different individuals.

    3. There is a problem in deciding when alevel actually been satisfied
