• To keep staff motivated they must be rewarded. This can be financial or non financial rewards.

• We will examine some examples.

Financial Rewards • Piece rate: method of payment according to how much you produce. Time Rate; paid

according to hours worked. • • Performance related pay (PRP): pay here is related to performance, e.g. bonus, and

commission. Appraisal is the main tool to implement Performance Related Pay.

• Profit sharing: this is a different approach to financial incentive; it aims to provide staff with a share of the firm’s annual profit. However, Herzberg warned that financial incentives distort behaviour.

• Share ownership: Similar to above; It makes workers, managers, directors and shareholders think as one.

• Fringe benefits (perks): examples of perks are company cars, mobile phones, membership of clubs, lower mortgage rates etc.

Non financial Rewards• job enrichment: Herzberg believed strongly in job enrichment as it gives

people the opportunity to use their ability to create and share ideas. It could also give them a range of responsibilities and activities, which should motivate them.

• job enlargement: it means adding extra responsibility and workload to the job without sense of creativity to inspire workforce.

• Job empowerment it means giving employees more power in the work place. In modern terms empowerment is called delegation.

• Others include; more teamwork and Promoting staff (internal recruitment)
