Genesis :'4::.}-zoi r Corinthians ra:23-26 / Luke 9:rrb--r-7

My three-year-old twin nephews, Jacob and Christopher, are heavily into

dinosaurs. Recently they revealed knowledge of dinosaur religious practices:

"No, Jacob! The tyrannosaur can't eat the triceratops until he says the blessing!"

Their mother commented, "l guess some things are sinking in after all."

Today's readings are full of blessing words as we focus on the Body and Bloodof Christ. Melchizedek blesses God and Abram in Genesis; we hear Saint Paul

recall the Last Supper blessing-and-iRstitution of the Eucharist; and in theGospel, Jesus blesses the five loaves and two fish that miraculously becomemore than enough food forthe people gathered.

We know we ought to follow the dinosaurs' lead and pray a blessing before ourdaily meals, but how many of us remember? We're often rushed to get fooddown before our next task or activity, and we take our meals for granted.

Might the same be said of our focus at Mass? Sure, we're physically present as

the blessing is prayed over the bread and wine, but are we actively participatingin that prayer?

Do we take the Eucharist for granted? ln the Gospel, the blessed food was

distributed by the apostles to all who were hungry. The blessing, in a sense, was

multiplled because Jesus'followers carried it out.

We're called to have that same multiplying effect in the world when we receive

the Eucharist. As we let the Body and Blood "sink in" more deeply, our actionsand attitudes can truly transform the world.

"You will find out that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the kettle ofsoup and the full basket. But you will keep your gentleness and your smile. lt is notenough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of thepoor, always smiling and good-humored. . ..the more unjust and insulting, the morelove you must give them. lt is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive youthe bread you give to them." de ar PAD Rf,

Whrneuer I try n complete the deuotion of the Nine Consecutiue

Fir* Fridays, at least one of thcm turns out to be a haly doy oJ

obligation. Does receiuing Communion on that day also count

toward the consecutiue chain of Fridays, or should I go n Mass

twice thnt day and receiue Communion both times?

Nine Consecutive First Fridays is a special devotionto the Sacred Heart of Jesus popularized by Saint

Margaret Mary Alacoque. According to the Sacred

Heart Institute's website (sacredheartlegion.com), those

who receive holy Communion on nine consecutive

First Fridays with the intention of honoring the Sacred

Heart ofJesus and making reparation for the disrespect

that the Lord receives in the Blessed Sacrament will"receive the grace of final perseverance and that ofreceiving the sacraments of the Church before dying."

According to the Catechism of the Catlnlic Church, wemay receive holy Communion as often as we fullyparticipate in the celebration of the Mass on a given day

(1388-1389). When a holy day of obligation falls on one

of your nine first Fridays, you may "count" the holyCommunion you receive participating in the Mass as

also honoring the Sacred Heart ofJesus, and thereforeyou needn't receive holy Communion wvice that day.

ni$;l Yeor of Folth october 1 1, 20l2-November 24, 2a:'3wt., ffi Excerpts from a homily given by Pope Francis on the

'i ,ctual Feast of Corpus Christi(May 30, 2o1J)

. . once again, the Lord gives us the bread which is his body. He makes a

gift of himself. We also experiencing "God's solidarity" with humanity, ...

a solidarity that never ceases to amaze us. God draws near to us. ln the

sacrifice of the Cross He lowers himself, entering into the darkness ofdeath in order to give us his life, which conquers evil, selfishness, and

death. . . .

"Discipleship, communion, and sharing. Let us pray that our participation

in the Eucharist may always inspire us: to follow the Lord every day, to be

instruments of communion, to share what we are with Him and with our

neighbour. Then our lives will be truly fruitful."
