Moseley – The Premier Rugby Club in Birmingham

For 140 years the name Moseley has been synonymous with top level rugby in Birmingham. From its origins in Balsall Heath to its regeneration at Billesley Common the club has produced thirty four internationals and represented England’s second city with pride as winners of the RFU knockout cup and most recently the EDF Energy National Trophy. With the upcoming Rugby World Cup in 2015 already driving the game to the forefront of sporting minds in Birmingham, and excitement building around the scheduled games at Villa Park, the city is ready to take its place as a home of Premiership rugby and Moseley are working hard to be that team. The time is right for Moseley to embrace its position in Birmingham and to also reflect the joint aspirations of the city and the club in providing top level rugby for both players and supporters. To underpin this the Board of Directors are proposing to rename the club Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club in reflection of the fact that Moseley are a club with a much wider supporter base and sporting influence than just that of the local area around the ground. Moseley Head Coach Kevin Maggs sums up the logic behind the change as: “I think the name change is crucial to bring Moseley into the professional era. The club will establish itself as the leading Midlands club below the Premiership and the incorporation of Birmingham into the name will make it a more viable option for us to engage new sponsors, who wish to become associated with us and the city. We need extra revenue if we are to consolidate our position in the Championship, and then have a viable plan, underpinned by an increased playing budget, to make a successful push for a play-off place. Attracting new sponsorship and support is key to this.” May we ensure you that there is no intention to distance the club from its rich heritage, and the retention of Moseley in the name is key to the proposal. As we move forward with developments of the ground and improvements in playing performance we must reflect our position in Birmingham, attracting more supporters who will relate to rugby in their city and also companies who will wish to be associated with a team representing the second largest city in the UK. Councillor Ian Ward Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council recently commented: “The Rugby World Cup in 2015 provides the opportunity to further the development of rugby in Birmingham and Moseley as Birmingham’s Premier Rugby Union Club is central to the City’s ambition. The name change to Birmingham Moseley is the next step towards Premiership rugby in the City and will be warmly welcomed by potential sponsors whilst opening up the possibility of attracting a new city audience to the game of rugby”. Mindful of the importance of our supporters’ opinions on this change we are keen to solicit feedback on the proposal. Please feel free to send your views to [email protected] and we will ensure they are put in front of the Directors for consideration.

Moseley announce two dream signings and two more of last season’s squad return

As the building of the playing squad for 2014/15 continues Moseley are pleased to confirm the signing of two players who recently won the accolade of being voted into the Rugby Paper Dream Team for 2013/14 by their leagues opposition teams. England Counties Wing Drew Cheshire joins from Gloucester off the back of a season where he was dual registered to Luctonians. During his time

at Gloucester Cheshire featured in LV Cup, Premiership and Premiership Rugby 7s games. The leading try scorer at Luctonians last season Drew picked up 22 scores from 27 appearances’ which earned the speedster the right wing berth in the National 2 North Dream Team. With genuine pace, and an ability to break a tackle Hereford born Drew has been on the radar of a number of Championship clubs, we look forward to him bringing his exciting playing style to Billesley Common. Australian Hooker Scott Tolmie moves to Moseley from London Irish where he featured last season for the Wild Geese. Like Cheshire Scott’s performances in National 2 South

earned him selection to the Rugby Paper Dream Team who said “Tolmie was a near unanimous choice after an impressive season in which he racked up 20 tries” “The hooker is one for the future and his hat-trick against Taunton before Christmas was one of the best displays in the league all season.” 21 year old Scott, a product of the Australia Schools squad, is also fairly unique in the front row fraternity in being an elusive runner with ball in hand and a useful goal kicker. Former 1st XV player of the season, and one of Moseley’s longest standing squad members

Neil Mason will be starting his 10th season at the club. The uncompromising back row will be celebrating his testimonial season as one of a rare breed of players in the modern game who have spent most of their careers with one club. A player who leads by example we are sure Neil will again play a major role in moving the club forward. Alongside Neil we welcome back another long standing member of the 1st XV in

hooker Adam Caves. Adam still has his sights set on adding to his impressive total of appearances following a frustrating season which saw him spend most of the time on the side-lines recovering from a serious knee injury

MOSELEY OAK NEED YOU

Get involved!

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to get involved with Moseley Oak. Readers will be aware of the progress the Oak 1st XV has made over the last few years – here’s your chance to get involved in helping them to their next goal……………Midlands One. Most of the clubs in Midlands 2 are long established. This has the benefit of former players and other clubmen and women getting involved in first team roles. Often this is ‘putting something back into the club’ but also provides interesting involvement in helping their club thrive. Being a relatively new club, there aren’t many who fit the above – so we’re looking for help from the wider Moseley community……………or from those currently not involved at all with Moseley! We need:

1. Team Manager – match days and a few hours at a time to suit during the week

After 5 years of undertaking this role, Kathy Duckers has reluctantly stepped down for various reasons. We’d like to record our thanks for the invaluable role Kathy has undertaken during the very important formative years of the club. The job is not onerous, but does involve making sure the match administration is done efficiently. This includes player registrations, referee assessment cards, results reported etc. This would mean attending home and away games and outside the match day would only take up a couple of hours a week maximum. Again – you’ll be well supported by the club and will soon feel part of the team. These duties could be shared if this is preferred.

2. Team Assistant – Match Days only/before and after the game

This role is principally a ‘home matches’ role but is also important for away games. It therefore may suit someone who usually watches the 1st XV since many games won’t clash (though we have to wait for the fixtures to be issued!) or again be a shared job. On match days the duties would include collecting the kit from the clubhouse, ensuring that warm up equipment (tackle shields, cones, water bottles etc ) are collected/returned on time, putting out and collecting pitch flags/post protectors, ensuring we have balls etc!

3. Touch Judge – match days only/duration of the game

We currently use a squad player for this role, but would prefer to be like the other clubs in the league and have one (or two) regulars who will undertake this role home and/or away (preferably both!). Whilst previous experience of playing and/or officiating is preferred, Oak can help train anyone who is fit and willing to feel part of the team. You’ll be well supported and the club is willing to sponsor training programmes if you think this is useful. Some of the benefits

All volunteers for any of these roles will become an important part of this positive group.

All matches are on Saturdays and travelling expenses will be provided.

Moseley Oak kit will also be provided. Please contact John Richards, Moseley Oak Chairman at [email protected]

Moseley RFC add Scott Tolmie to hooking options

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail Moseley have strengthened their front row options for next season by signing Australian hooker Scott Tolmie. Just a day after the club announced they had retained the services of veteran Adam Caves, they have also revealed they have brought the 21-year-old to Billesley Common to compete for the No. 2 shirt. English-born but brought up in Perth, the former Australian schoolboy international came back to the UK last summer to work with London Irish academy. He spent last season with the Exiles’ amateur arm Wild Geese in level four, who finished third bottom of National Two South despite the youngster’s 20

tries. And at 6ft 1in and more than 19st head coach Kevin Maggs believes Tolmie has the size and skill-set to make an impact at Championship level.

“I watched him last season and spoke to Brian Smith about him and he was very positive,” Maggs said. “He is a bit raw but he certainly has the talent and physical tools to be a success at our level. “He’s been really impressive in pre-season, he’s probably the strongest guy in the gym and we’re all looking forward to seeing what he can do and whether he can take his opportunity.” Tolmie and Caves will be challenged for the hooking berth by Jack Lea, a homegrown product who would have had more of a role last season but for a broken wrist. Caves’s retention affords him the chance to break Richard Stott’s appearance record but Maggs says the veteran can’t take anything for granted. “He did well towards the end of last season and he’s come in and lost a stone in weight already. He knows what he has to do if he wants to play regularly.”

Moseley confirm first of the new signings

Moseley are now in their 3rd week of pre-season training and prospective new players and trialists have been put through their paces. The first of the new signings for 2014/15 underline the strong relationship between the club and Welsh rugby, plus a further member of last season’s squad has committed to next season.

Back Row Ed Siggery joins from Ealing Trailfinders. Ed was a standout performer last season as part of Ealing Trailfinders Championship campaign. Carmarthen born Siggery, a product of Scarlets Academy represented Wales at U20 level and appeared for London Irish before his move to the Trailfinders. Described as a dynamic and destructive wing forward 6’ 3” Siggery will add to an already uncompromising back row alongside the likes of Neil Mason and Chris Brightwell.

At tight head prop Moseley have chosen to fill the boots of departing Welsh international Ben Evans with another player from the principality in the solid frame of Simon Gardiner. Twenty four year old Gardiner, another Scarlets Academy graduate, moves to Billesley from Swansea. The Welsh U20 international is renowned as a strong scrummager.

Full back / wing Mike Penn has committed to his second season at Moseley. Former Edinburgh and Worcester player Penn will be looking to build upon his 16 appearances last season bringing his impressive pace to bear in attack.

CLUB AGM & SUPPORTERS FORUM

All the News

The club’s AGM & Supporters forum was held on Monday 14th July with an enthusiastic turn out from Moseley Followers. Presidents opening remarks - James Morris-Adams James opened by welcoming everyone to this year’s meeting on the back of what has been the clubs most successful season in the Championship. James also drew everyone’s attention to the amazing new structure going up beside the pitch, which will see the new stand and clubhouse opening around the turn of the year. Statutory business – Matthew Harvey Matthew proposed acceptance of the clubs accounts which was agreed by shareholders. CEO’s Financial Report – Adam Warren Adam advised for the financial year in question the club experienced a downturn in income, mainly due to cuts in education funding hitting coaching programmes. Consequently the playing budget was reduced from previous seasons, and it is a credit to the coaching team and players that they remained so competitive on the field. Overall the club broke even. Adam then outlined some of the key points around the five year plan of the club which commences in the 14/15 season with the opening of the new stand and a consolidation of the 1st XV league position in line with last year’s finish. The target in 15/16 is to have on board one new major club sponsor (or a series of smaller sponsors) to provide a significant improvement in the playing budget and to target gates of 2,000 at matches. The club’s five year plan then aims to be participating in playoff rugby by 2017/18. Adam underlined the main aim of the plan is always to have successful community based rugby club in Birmingham Election of next President – James Morris-Adams James advised that a meeting of club Vice Presidents will be held in August to ratify endorsements for the next President of the club. The outcome will be advised in Moseley Matters. Moseley Oak playing report – John Richards John summed up Oak’s season as “so near and yet so far”. 17 wins from 22 games left Oak in 3rd place in Midlands 2 West North, just missing out on a playoff spot. Of note Oak were the only team to beat the league winners Leek with a victory at Billesley Common. The introduction of an Oak 2nd XV to the Midlands Reserve league proved very successful with the team winning 12 of their 15 fixtures and securing a 3rd place finish. For next season John thanked Ben Jowett who will be moving on from Club Secretary after a number of seasons and confirmed the coaching team will be John White, Richard Protherough and Paul Cox, Moseley’s former centre. John was pleased to confirm a number of ex Moseley Colts and Mini & Juniors have joined Oak during the close season and he reiterated that the target is still to secure promotion to Midlands 1. Ladies section playing report – Nicola Brown Nicola explained that the ladies had experienced a difficult start to last season with a change of coaching staff. The team lost their first five games but came back well in the latter stages to finish 5th and just 1 point off 3rd place. The team also reached the finals of the Help for Heroes tournament and the Southampton 7s. On the representative front Katie Boot and Steph Warner were selected for the Midlands squad. 12 players were picked for the North Midlands squad and 8 for Greater Birmingham. Nicola was pleased to report that Indigo River have come on board as a new sponsor for the team, however they are still in need of more sponsors to cover costs. The team are currently recruiting a new coach and five new players have joined for next

season. Youth & Development Section (James Morris-Adams on behalf of Simon Bartlett) Simon summed up the season as one that on the face of it might seem disappointing but which held many positives. The U17s reached the semi-finals of the National Plate and the finals of the North Midlands Cup while the U19’s finished 3rd in their league having made good progress since the New Year. One of the most pleasing aspects of the season was seeing Colt of the Year Jack Lea being offered a 2 year contract with the 1st XV. 9 of the U19 squad were selected to represent Greater Birmingham. The launch of CoBRA (City of Birmingham Rugby Academy) and the Player Pathway Partnership with Bournville College were significant events in the Y&D plans of the club and it is hoped that an announcement of a similar partnership with a local University can be made in the near future. Mini & Junior section playing report – (Lee Evans on behalf of Louise Baggaley) Louise advised that the season started well with a successful Mini’s festival which saw 48 teams take part. The move of the festival to October is proving popular and is likely to become a permanent fixture. Throughout last season many of the age groups have seen a large influx of new players, indeed the Micros (age 5-6) now has 50 players. The M&J committee will be focussing on bringing the age groups closer together and making the players and parents feel more a part of the club. A positive step in this was the introduction of M&J players as mascot for the 1st XV, an initiative which will continue for 2014/15. The U14 & U15 teams both made it to the finals of the North Midlands Cup and a number of the players were selected for the Greater Birmingham squads. 7 Coaches have now completed Level 1 of the Rugby Ready Programme and 3 have moved on to level 2. Finally the tour to Woolacombe for U7 to U15 proved to be a great success. Moseley Rugby Community Foundation – Tony Caesar Tony advised that over £100,000 of income was raised via the young professionals coaching programme and the Y&D Learning Centre. The Y&D centre continued to provide training in IT skills and supported the likes of sheltered housing schemes and back to work programmes. “ new grants are being pursued to expand Y&D activities further and support had already been received from Vodaphone who are supplying Wi-Fi support, tablets etc. Facilities – James Jowett James opened by noting he was usually asked at the AGM “when is the stand development going to start?” so it was very pleasing therefore to be able to physically see it this year. Last July the club moved forward with the revised stand concept under budget constraints and the challenge of securing the necessary funding, approvals etc. There was an initial delay in start but we are now progressing well. The City is managing the contractors on site so the club has to work around their processes. Due to the delayed start the completion of the bowls complex has been prioritised as it must be in place for the start of the indoor bowls season in October. The current build completion dates are 11th Oct for bowls complex and 22nd Dec for Rugby (there will still be a period following build completion for kitting out of fixtures and fittings). There is still a need to raise further funds for fixtures and fittings such as security system, PA etc. In the region of £50,000 is still needed. The buy a brick scheme has progressed well and will be extended to the start of the new season. James reported that there is an aspiration from the City Council for the whole of the common to move to a trust under the name of South Birmingham Sports Village made up of the various users of the common. At present Moseley are looking to take the lead in managing the facilities for the trust. A question was asked as to who will own the new facility being build, James confirmed that Moseley will own the complete building and the Bowls club will contract to Moseley for use, in addition the bowls facility will be open for public use.

Commercial Matters – Iain Hall Iain stated that the remit he has for commercial matters is to secure sponsorship to allow the 1st XV to move to full time professional rugby while establishing long term relationship with businesses. Iain is looking to provide an environment for networking and commercial opportunities for the clubs sponsors. Iain advised the forum that a number of new sponsors have signed up for the new season including Baydonhill, Spire Healthcare, Mar City, Johnson Fellows, Rugby-Tel and Alto Digital. Also to date 71% of last year’s sponsors have committed for another season with Moseley. In order to secure the required playing budget funding we need to identify more opportunities so supporters are encouraged to advise Iain if they know of any opportunities (iain.hall@moseleyrugby./co.uk) 1st XV Q&A session with Kevin Maggs Q- Are you happy with next season’s squad?

A -Yes, a bit more money for the playing budget would be nice though. We are aiming to produce the same form as we did last season. Pleased with the players we have retained, we have a tight knit, committed squad.

Q – Are there any more players being signed A – We are hoping to secure one or two more players and will be able to confirm dual registered players in the next couple of weeks.

Q – What is the squad size? A – Tonight we had 25 players training including a couple of the colts lads who are gaining experience)

Q – The standard of the Championship is improving and we have lost 3 or 4 god players, how will we fare?

A – Confident we have a good group of players for next season. Being realistic the league positions generally reflect the clubs playing budgets but we are aiming for a mid-table finish again.

Q – What are your views on the B&I Cup? A – We don’t have the luxury of a large squad to wholesale rotate players for cup games but they will provide an opportunity for players to push for their inclusion in the starting XV.

Q – What is the impact of the loss of Chris Kemp form the Strength & Conditioning role? A – Credit to Chris he did a fantastic job at Moseley and the move to Saints is the next step in his career. He was selected from 150 applicants. We now have Greg Sammons on board as Strength & Conditioning Coach who was part of Leicester’s academy coaching staff. In 4 weeks we are seeing good results.

Any Other Business Q – Can the current video tower be moved away from the stand

A – It will be looked into. There will be a purpose built gantry built into the new stand. Q – Will the roof be put back on the current stand

A – This should be possible and will be looked into. Brian Skeeles reminded everyone that the annual Cricket Challenge match will take place at Moseley Ashfield’s ground on Friday 8th August.

MOSELEY in MOSELEY

Festival Street Fair a Great Success

Former Luctonians and Gloucester flier Drew Cheshire makes step up with Moseley

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley have moved to replace last year's leading scorer Matt Williams by bringing in sought after England Counties wing Drew Cheshire. The 22-year-old comes to Billesley Common after training last season with Gloucester and playing for Luctonians in National Two North. Hereford-born Cheshire has spent most of the last couple of seasons at Mortimer Park, where he has racked up an impressive 46 tries in 69

appearances. That earned him a chance with the Cherry and Whites where he played a full LV Cup match against Scarlets and came off the bench against Worcester. However, amid all the upheaval at Kingsholm he was unable to earn another contract and following his release he was linked with Jersey and other Championship clubs. But an opportunity arose at Billesley Common after Moseley lost the outstanding Williams who has moved to London Scottish this summer. Moseley have also confirmed the retention of Neil Mason, whose benefit year the 2014-15 campaign will be, and hooker Adam Caves. Caves will be challenged for the No. 2 shirt by new recruit Scott Tolmie, who has arrived from London Irish Wild Geese. Moseley have also brought former Scarlets prop Simon Gardiner and Ealing back rower Ed Siggery to Birmingham.

OUR NEW OPPONENTS FOR NEXT SEASON

Worcester Warriors

Sixways Stadium, Warriors Way, Worcester WR3 8ZE www.warriors.co.uk After a 4 season gap we will again face near neighbours Worcester in league action. The two teams last met in the Championship during the 2010/11 season when Worcester won both fixtures 18-37 at Billesley & 7-45 at Sixways, during a season in which they only lost one game, to Cornish Pirates, as they bounced straight back into the Premiership having been relegated the season before. Last season saw Worcester in a relegation fight with newly promoted Newcastle who survived by virtue of three wins to Worcester’s two, over the Falcons & Gloucester. With the first of those wins not occurring until the 30th March it must have been a long old season for supporters and players alike. Founded in 1871 Worcester moved to their present home of Sixways in 1975. Starting league life in North Midlands One the club enjoyed significant financial support from backer Cecil Duckworth which allowed extensive development of the ground and rapid progress up the leagues, to reach the Premiership in 2004/5. Since entering the Premiership Worcester have continually struggled to pull themselves away from the bottom half of the league, despite some marquee signings including the likes of Chris Latham and Rico Gear, with their best finish coming in 2005/6 when they secures 8th place. Last season a consolation in a frustrating campaign saw Full Back Chris Pennell become a worthy selection for England’s tour of New Zealand. Pennell was also nominated for the Premiership player of the season award. As Worcester prepare for life in the Championship they have made a number of new signings including Wing Tom Biggs from Bath, Back Row Matt Cox from Gloucester, Fly Half Ryan Lamb from Leicester and ex-Moseley player Dan Sanderson from Rotherham. A number of significant players have left the club over the summer including Chris Jones, Jake Abbott, David Lemi and Josh Matavesi. Worcester have, however, retained a number of key players include the aforementioned Pennell, Welsh international back row Jonathan Thomas, Argentinian Captain Agustin Creevy and England 7s winger Josh Drauniniu. This season Moseley & Worcester players will get to know each other very well as they have been drawn in the same pool of the British & Irish Cup. We will first visit Sixways for the second game of the Championship campaign before welcoming Worcester to Billesley for a Cup encounter in October. A B&I trip to Worcester in November is then rounded off in January with a league fixture where, if all goes to plan, we will be able to host them in our new clubhouse/stand complex.

This year’s tournament will once again be held at Moseley Golf Club on Friday 12th September. The format will be meet for a light lunch at about 12-00, Shotgun start at 2-00, drinks in the bar when golf finished and dinner as early as practical, probably 7-30, so that those who have travelled a long way to support us can enjoy the meal, still get home in time to save Brownie Points and possibly collect one of the many prizes on offer for golfing excellence.

KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick

Swansong at the Reddings

Having sold their historic home at The Reddings Moseley played their final match at the ground on 6th May 2000 when Worcester were the visitors for the last Allied Dunbar Premiership Two fixture of the season. The weather was kind to the club and several thousand spectators filled the ground to witness this final game. About a year prior to this match Worcester had paid their first league visit to The Reddings and lost because John Liley missed a penalty goal with the last kick of the match and in a strange kind of symmetry Tony Yapp missed from in front of the posts with the first penalty attempt of this game. After 15 minutes there had been no score although Moseley were very nervy and it appeared that Worcester might overwhelm them once they had some points on the

Page 23: “Moseley Matters” - Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club Matters eEdition 483.pdf“Moseley Matters ” No:4 8 3 15 th July ... KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick ... Team England

board. At this stage the visitors were exerting tremendous pressure on the home line and they succeeded in driving back row forward Jim Jenner over for the opening try (0-5). Nine minutes later Moseley fly half Chris Doyle took the ball deep into Worcester’s half where lock forward Andy Hall was positioned at outside centre where he took the a pass, dummied to wing Andy Gray outside him and scored a memorable try to open Moseley’s account (5-5). In the 29th minute Andy Binns, who was playing at centre, took over the kicking duties from Doyle, who had been badly shaken, and landed a penalty kick to take the lead (8-5). Six minutes later Worcester retook the lead when back row Brett Scriven touched down following a clever kick by fly half Andy Currier (8-10). Moseley were not disheartened by losing the lead and in first half injury time tapped a penalty and back row Peter Buxton went on a long run almost to the Worcester line where he was dragged down, however, fellow back row Bill Drake-Lee was up in support and he was able to score a try which Binns converted (15-10). Early in the second half Binns missed a penalty from in front of the posts and therefore handed the kicking duties back to Doyle who had recovered from his earlier collision. Seven minutes into the second half Hall was driven over the line and Doyle slotted the conversion (22-10). Buxton then scored a try from another forward drive, which Doyle also converted (29-10). Such was Moseley’s dominance at this stage that some observers thought that there might be a landslide victory for them, however, Worcester had other ideas and wing Nick Baxter was able to score after being perfectly set up by Currier. Ben Harvey converted this try (29-17) and it appeared that Worcester might rally and indeed they did cross the Moseley line but although the whole of the grandstand saw the ball touched down both the referee and his touch judge were unsighted. Not wishing to be upstaged Moseley rounded the match off with a further try, by Doyle, following a maul (34-17). The difference between the sides had been that the home team had something to play for and at times third-placed Worcester ‘looked the third-worst’ club in Allied Dunbar Premiership Two. Worcester had been ‘well and truly vanquished’ and The Reddings had been given a suitable send-off. FOUR EX-MOSELEY PLAYERS IN COMMONWELTH GAMES

Team England reveal sevens squad for Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

From the RFU Website Commonwealth Games England today announced the rugby sevens team that will compete at next month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The squad includes eight players who will make their Commonwealth Games debuts while John Brake, Dan Norton, Tom Powell and James Rodwell bring the experience of having competed in the 2010 Delhi Games. Eight players maintain their places having featured in the side that finished third at the Marriott London Sevens, the final event of the HSBC Sevens World Series in May, while Brake and Mike Ellery have recovered from injuries in time to be selected.

Tom Mitchell, IRB Sevens Player of the Year nominee and the HSBC Sevens World Series highest point-scorer, continues as captain, having taken on the role in January. Charlie Hayter who recently signed for England Sevens from Wasps, and London Scottish captain Mark Bright, earn their places after impressing in the first two rounds of the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Series. Mitchell was clearly eager to get going, explaining: “Glasgow 2014 has been on the horizon for a long time and we’ve been working hard towards this one goal for a while. It’s nice to know selection has now

been made and we can start to get that extra bit of focus as the event draws near. “Our preparations since the end of the World Series have been really well managed. Training has been very specific and tailored to ensure we peak at the Commonwealths. We’ve also worked on a lot of on-field things, both tactically and technically, that we needed to improve on from last season. “The event will be a totally new experience for all the boys and that comes with its own challenges, which we recognise and are prepared for. It is a huge opportunity to mix with other sports and it will be great to see how other athletes operate and to learn from them.” Experienced forward Powell is another who will make his second appearance at a Commonwealth Games. He added: “I was over the moon being selected. Coming fourth in Delhi [four years ago] was tough, it is the worst position to finish in and this is a chance to put that right. Our preparations are building nicely, we will have some very challenging games but there is a lot of belief in this squad. “The multisport element makes the Commonwealth Games completely different from our normal competitions. It will have a great atmosphere and I think off the back of the home Olympics there will be huge support making it an extra special event to be part of.”

Page 25: “Moseley Matters” - Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club Matters eEdition 483.pdf“Moseley Matters ” No:4 8 3 15 th July ... KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick ... Team England

Simon Amor, England Sevens Head Coach and silver medallist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, said: “The squad selected has a very good balance of speed, playmaking ability, physicality and the all-important X-factor. “With players returning from long-term injuries the competition for places has been particularly strong. This has raised the performances in training and the attitude throughout the team has been excellent. We will be looking to bring the experiences and progress made throughout the Sevens World Series to Glasgow.” Being part of the bigger team that is Team England at the

Commonwealth Games is a unique experience in a very different environment from the one the players are used to on the world circuit. You feed off other sports’ successes, see other athletes there and the sheer scale of the village and the competition make it a wonderful occasion.” The rugby sevens competition takes place at the Ibrox Stadium over the weekend of July 26-27. England will feature in Pool D and will play against Sri Lanka (1:34pm), Uganda (6:24pm) and Australia at (9:48pm) on day one, with coverage live on the BBC. England Sevens squad for the Commonwealth Games Daniel Bibby John Brake Mark Bright Philip Burgess Michael Ellery Charlie Hayter Christian Lewis-Pratt Tom Mitchell (captain) Daniel Norton Tom Powell James Rodwell Marcus Watson Congratulations to James, Dan, Mike & Charlie. We also note that there is a further connection in that Moseley’s Jeremy Summers will be bringing his legal eye to the disciplinary panel at the games (as well as the Women’s World Cup in Paris in August)

I HAVE A DREAM

Mike Powell Selects his Dream Team

From the Rugby Paper 1. Jason Leonard - A great prop who transfered from the amateur to pro era with ease. Also runs a pub in Richmond which may have helped his inclusion as the only Englishman! 2. Sunia Koto - An excellent scrummager and ball carrier and a top guy on and off the field at London Welsh. Villi Masi will probably give me some abuse for choosing a Fijiian over him! 3. Adam Jones - another excellent scrumager with a good rugby brain. I’m sure if he was 20stone lighter he’d be a great outside-half. 4. Paul O’Connell - A great all round second row and athlete who is a good lineout tactician and always plays with his heart on his sleeve. 5. Sebastian Chabal - on his day Seabass was an awesome ball carrier and defender and someone who looks like he would enjoy a beer. 6. Lee Beach - The World Cup winning sevens captain just edges out George Smith. Lee has a great engine, will keep going for the full 80 and makes a lot of hits. 7. Martyn Williams - gets in just ahead of Marty Holah. Martyn would be the perfect linkman between the monster pack. He was awesome in both attack and defence. 8. Ryan Jones - Used to travel to training with Ryan when we both joined Bridgend then linked up with him again at the Ospreys. I need someone in the team to have smaller calfs than me and he definatley has. Ryan also enjoys a beer, when it is deserved. 9. Justin Marshall - Another who at his best was the best in the world. A bit of a maverick but was a brilliant player and someone who would command respect to boss the forwards. 10. Neil Jenkins - World class goal-kicker with a lot more to his game. I know a lot of players who have benefited from his help. 11. Shane Williams - He’d terrify any defence and in training he was the person I would fear more than any of the the big forwards. His magic footwork would get him past you in a second. 12. James Hook - Toughest selection but Hooky just edges Gav Henson and Scott Gibbs. He is a great entertainer and a player people love to watch. 13. Brian O Driscoll - a class act. In my first game against him for Bridgend we were both sin-binned for fighting – the only time I have been congratulated by the coach for getting a yellow card!

Page 29: “Moseley Matters” - Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club Matters eEdition 483.pdf“Moseley Matters ” No:4 8 3 15 th July ... KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick ... Team England

14. Josh Drauinui - Josh is a wonderful talent and supreme finisher. He edges the spot ahead of Paul Sampson who I used to love watching as a youngster. 15. Juan Martin Hernanadez - The Argentinian full-back who played for Stade Francais when I faced them for Ospreys in the Heineken Cup. Another world class performer who shines in most games. Errie Classens would have made the team if he was to work on his right foot step! *This article was first published in The Rugby Paper on June 29

Moseley Ladies Squad

Sponsored by: The Ladies are looking for you As part of the Ladies squad preparations for next season they need to secure vital sponsorship as soon as possible. While being cost conscious and controlling their finances the team cannot function without the support of an external sponsor or sponsors. Without such funding the team may not be able to continue in its present form. Ladies rugby is an exciting, expanding aspect of the game and a great opportunity for a business to be associated with a unique part of rugby. In 2016 ladies rugby will be included (in the 7s format) in the 2015 Rio Olympic Games and is poised to become part of the IRB World 7s Series. At Moseley the team has consolidated their position in Midlands 2 and now boasts one of its healthiest playing squads in terms of numbers. The team has contributed players for Greater Birmingham, North Midlands & Midlands squads, as well as being title holders at a number of 7s tournaments across the country.

EVANS ABOVE

OAP Lee-ding us all astray

From Duckers and Diving 24th June Just done a ten mile walk in aid of fading pensioner Lee Evans, the “voice” of Moseley Rugby Club. Well, sort of. Actually I tell a double lie. The old git isn’t 65 until Friday and the walk was in aid of Parkinson’s. Lee, who works for print group Pinstripe, but doubles as the announcer for Moseley games, organises the jaunt along the canals from Stratford-upon-Avon to Birmingham. About 70-odd taking part … indeed some very odd people. Boom! Boom! The full distance is 22 miles. I, being a delicate sort, do the shorter version. Bloody hot! Naturally would normally have necessitated regular re-hydration at hostelries on the way – there’s eight en route. Usually a bit of a pub crawl but in fact we behaved and just entered the one for a solitary pint. With that sort of admittance how can I possibly live up to my reputation! Often raises £2-3,000. So what is Lee up to now we and the State are supporting him? Continuing to work most of the week for Pinstripe who do the Moseley programme and whose clients include for the likes of the city council and others. But also being persuaded, hopefully, to raise sponsorship money for Moseley. So no need to take him to the vets to be put down just yet. There’s a session in one of the Digbeth pubs to mark his milestone birthday – could get messy. So altogether then … Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday, dear Lee, Happy birthday to you.

The recommended route for progression Moseley Oak RFC has the full backing of Moseley Rugby Club evidenced in the clear statement from Moseley’s new Chairman of Playing, John Richards, and from Moseley’s previous President, John Beale. “Moseley Oak is the designated route in the career progression of Moseley players leaving the Under 19 Colts as well as former players who wish to return to rugby at Billesley. Oak players of the right standard will get priority to play in Moseley Development matches”. Playing the 2013/14 season in Midlands League 2, new players are welcome – please visit either the Moseley club website or the Oak website for contact details or Call Jack Richards on 07970 868 039.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Watson-Jones elected Shropshire president

Paul Bolton – North Midlands Website Former Moseley centre Andy Watson-Jones has been elected president of Shropshire for the next two years. Watson-Jones started and finished his playing career at Newport and he also played county rugby for Shropshire and North Midlands during a distinguished career. His uncle, Brian Watson-Jones, was the first captain of Shropshire in 1959 and Andy captained Shropshire in 1984 during the county's 25th anniversary year. Watson-Jones, who succeeds Gordon Wood as Shropshire's president, has served Newport in numerous administrative roles including chairman and president since he retired from playing.

Charlie Hayter joins England Sevens

From the RFU Website Wasps centre Charlie Hayter has signed for England Sevens, becoming a member of Simon Amor's centrally-contracted core group. The 25-year-old has been training with the squad since the start of June and made his England Sevens debut in the first round of the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Series in Lyon. Hayter joined Wasps from Greene King IPA Championship Club Moseley in 2012. Prior to that, during his time at Worcester Warriors, was dual registered with London Scottish where he impressed Simon Amor, the Exiles' Head Coach at the time. Now England Sevens Head Coach, Amor said: “Charlie has always been an excellent athlete, fast and physical, and I was delighted to see him make the step up to the Aviva Premiership with Wasps. “He is a great addition to the England Sevens programme and I am confident that sevens will also help develop his game should he return to the Premiership at a later date. “The FIRA tournaments and our intense training schedule ahead of the Commonwealth Games are really helping to embed him within the set up. “He has been thrown in at the deep end but has all the raw materials to be a great player for us. It is exciting that we are already seeing a sharp upward curve in his performance.”

MOSELEY PLAYERS ASSOCIATION

Past and Present Players of Moseley Rugby Club

“Keeping the spirit alive”

Membership of Moseley Players Association (MPA) is open to anyone who has played for ANY Moseley team, including MWRFC and Moseley Oak. This includes anyone who has had a

significant involvement with managing, coaching or providing on-field care to the players and was therefore an essential part of the playing team. The MPA plays a key role in keeping former players in touch with each other and involved in the Club and assisting the Club in any ways it can. Please contact the Membership Secretary Roy Kerr (contact details are at the end of this

section) for details and a membership application form.

We are always pleased to receive any snippets of information about any old players from any of your eras. Please email Moseley Matters at [email protected].

300 Club May and June Draws

The 300 Club Draws for both May and June have now taken place, the results being as follows: May Draw: £150 - Judy Kemp, £75 - Steve Evans, £50 - Bob Massey, £25 - John Beale, Brian Rolph, Janet Thorndyke and Peter Fry June Draw: £150 - J B J Blakemore, £75 - Andy Houston, £50 - Jane Osmond, £25 - Peggy Male, Roy Kerr, John Rose and Lorrie Lennon Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to those who didn't, but it's good to see an increase in the number of winners and that's a feature of the 300 Club draws which will remain in place until further notice. We are grateful to all 300 Club members for their patience regarding the May Draw and apologise for its delay. It was also good to have a membership enquiry on the website message board recently. For the benefit of others, the 300 Club application form appears at the end of this and every issue of ‘Moseley Matters’. Remember - every new member makes a difference to our Colts Teams. Finally, don't forget that anyone introducing a new member will be rewarded with 6 months free membership!
