EDITORIAL

Stand Down For Moseley!

They say a picture paints a thousand words so you will be relieved to hear that this weeks editorial will be light on letters and instead we thought we would show you some photographs of the first milestone in the new stand & clubhouse development as the current West Stand is taken down, to be re-located to the other side of the pitch. We must say a big thank you to the small but very dedicated team of volunteers who worked through the weekend to make this happen in very difficult conditions. They are the epitome of what makes this club great.

Thanks to Bob Brown and Tom Russell for this great record of the first part of the new development of Billesley Common. The views expressed in editorials are those of the team producing Moseley Matters and do not necessarily reflect those of Moseley Rugby Club.

Book Now Please!

It's really important to get bookings in so we can work out numbers etc. You don't HAVE to have a full table of 10 or 12. We’re very keen for all parts of the club to be represented at The Ball. If you wish to book individually, as a pair or more (but less than a table for 10) please advise on the booking form which table you’d like to be one (eg M&Js table; MPA table etc). THE BIG MATCH PREVIEW – by Glyn Barlow

Leeds v Moseley

Sunday 16th February After the unplanned week off due to the weather Moseley make a trip north this weekend to take on second place Leeds Carnegie (or Yorkshire Carnegie as they will apparently be known as, from next season). Never an easy side to play Leeds have only lost one encounter at home this season, way back at the beginning of November against London Welsh. Recent weeks have seen big wins against Ealing (11-46) and Bedford (50-6) in a season which has also yielded victories over fellow promotion chasers Bristol (twice) and Rotherham. Earlier in their campaign Leeds visited Billesley Common and held off a spirited performance to take the result 18 – 27. Following a very positive opening 40 minutes, which saw a well taken try for Chris Brightwell, Moseley allowed Leeds to build a lead after half time which they were unable to haul in. One of the key architects of the win was fly half Glyn Hughes who put his knowledge of the Common, from his two seasons in red and black, to good use scoring twelve points. Hughes has carried on this good form currently standing sixth in the league’s leading points scorers on 95, an impressive situation when you consider he is sharing kicking duties, and the fly half shirt, with Alex Lozowski who has one point less than him. So ensuring no kickable penalties are given away must be one of Moseley’s priorities on Sunday. Not that we can assume Leeds will just be a threat with the boot. On loan Wasps wing Jonah Holmes is equalling Rhys Buckley’s try scoring feats with seven to date and is being chased all the way by his fellow wing David Doherty. However it’s not just these two players who can create a problem for opponents as Leeds currently are the second highest team in terms of tries scored with 49. Since the two teams met in October Leeds have augmented their squad with the loans of 6’ 5” England U20 back row David Sisi from Bath and England Saxon centre Jon Clarke from Worcester Warriors. While Moseley’s players will probably have benefited from an extra week to rest bumps and bruises they will be keen to ensure they can start the game in the same good form that has seen wins over Ealing and Cross Keys (cup) and a close defeat away at Rotherham. Indeed it is the game at Clifton Lane which more than any underlines how far the squad has developed in the last few months, as the Moseley pack put considerable pressure on a big Rotherham eight and only just missed out on a bonus point in the last minutes of the match. If Moseley can produce the level of performance which they are clearly capable of for a full 80 minutes then they can challenge any team in the league. With just two points between 1st and 4th place and four points separating 7th and 10th place the league is proving to be very competitive. It is vital that Moseley look to secure any points on offer to rise to their targeted mid table finish, and more importantly pull further away from the bottom of league dogfight. Yorkshire could be a good place to do just that.

CLUB NEWS

School of Hard Knocks Starts at Moseley

This week the School of Hard Knocks came to Billesley. Scott Quinnell, Will Greenwood and the rest of the team had a pretty chilly welcome to the Common as the snow came down on their first practice session.

There was a great turnout of enthusiastic participants wanting to be involved. Both Moseley & Moseley Oak are proud to be supporting this excellent initiative. The SOHN team have asked us to pass on their thanks to the staff at the club who have been so amazingly helpful and welcoming.

Billesley Police apprehend two shifty looking

characters hanging around the changing rooms (We are happy to report Will & Scott got off with a

caution this time.)

Via Moseley Matters we will keep you updated on the programme. For more information on the work of the School of Hard Knocks visit their website by clicking here

KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick

Nick Jeavons on the Pampas (Part One)

Having won his first three England caps in the 1981 International Championship Moseley back row forward Nick Jeavons was selected for that year’s summer tour to Argentina. The tour party, which was captained by Bill Beaumont, was not at full strength because the likes of Peter Wheeler, Mike Slemen, Phil Blakeway and Maurice Colclough were unavailable. Twenty-six players were selected for the tour, of which ten were uncapped, six of the debutants being tight forwards. In that particular area only Beaumont and props Colin Smart and Gary Pearce had previously been capped. The tourists’ first match was against San Isidro Club, who had won the Buenos Aires league competition for the previous four seasons and who fielded four Argentinean internationals in their side. Nick Jeavons was chosen for this game as blindside flanker the position, which he had occupied in the Five Nations Championship. As the game entered its final quarter the hosts were leading by six points to three but three tries and two conversions suddenly gave England a winning advantage even though an untidy finish allowed San Isidro to score twice in injury time to give the tourists a win by 20 points to 14. During the match Jeavons looked dangerous when he had the ball in hand, won good lineout possession standing at number five and also made some useful contributions in defence. On the eve of the next game, at a players’ court, Jeavons and Gosforth lock Steve Bainbridge were jointly convicted of sharing one brain and one hairdryer! This first midweek fixture was under floodlights in Cordoba against the Northern Region, Jeavons was named on the replacements’ bench but was not required during the match, which England won by 36 points to12. Jeavons returned to the side for the following game against the Buenos Aires provincial side. This match was played in oppressively hot conditions, which caused the players’ shirts to stick to their backs, and was dominated by the referee who in all awarded 30 penalties, 23 of them against the tourists. Despite this seeming disparity England won the game by 34 points to 25. After the sticky conditions in Buenos Aires the tourists were relieved to feel the Atlantic breezes during their next game, against the Southern Region, in Mar del Plata. In the first half of this encounter Nick Jeavons made a long, powerful burst which led to a try for centre Paul Dodge, one of eight which England scored during the course of the match which they won by 47 points to three. (to be continued)

Rugby World Cup 2015 Volunteer Programme ‘The Pack’ Launched From the RFU

6,000 volunteers will join ‘The Pack’- the volunteers for Rugby World Cup 2015

75% of volunteers will be recruited from rugby clubs in England and Wales

‘The Pack’ will also give members of the public, who are new to the game of rugby, the chance to be part of the tournament

England Rugby 2015 will recruit volunteers who are interested in supporting the game beyond 2015 as part of its legacy

Applications open March 17, 2014 and close April 17, 2014

The England 2015 Organising Committee has today launched ‘The Pack’ – the volunteer programme for Rugby World Cup 2015. ‘The Pack’, made up of 6,000 volunteers, will be the faces of the tournament, helping to deliver Rugby World Cup 2015 across England and in Cardiff. In line with the vision for Rugby World Cup 2015, ‘The Pack’ will have rugby at heart recruiting 75% of the volunteers from rugby clubs in England and Wales. In addition, ‘The Pack’ will bring 1,500 potential new volunteers into rugby through a national campaign, with the aim of retaining them beyond 2015 as part the tournament’s legacy. Volunteers will play a key role in the delivery of the six week tournament with a range of roles including transport, meet and greet, accreditation and way-finding which will all vary in duration. Recruitment will begin on March 17 through an online application process. Over 2,000 RFU and WRU clubs will nominate between one and two of their members to join ‘The Pack’, and take part in selection events (‘Try Outs’) across England and in Cardiff throughout 2014. Members of the general public can register their interest in joining ‘The Pack’ from today at www.Rugbyworldcup.com/volunteers and details will be sent directly to all those signed up to The Front Row – the official newsletter for Rugby World Cup 2015 (www.Rugbyworldcup.com/frontrow). The application process will be open for one month between March 17 and April 17, followed by ‘Try Outs’ from June-December, with successful members of ‘The Pack’ confirmed in early 2015. Chief Executive of the England 2015 Organising Committee, Debbie Jevans, said: “’The Pack’ will play a big role in the delivery of Rugby World Cup 2015, welcoming the world to England, Cardiff, and to the game of rugby. True to our vision, rugby is at the heart of our volunteer programme and we will recruit 75% of the 6,000 volunteer members of the ‘The Pack’ from rugby clubs in England and Wales, working with the RFU and WRU. This is a great opportunity to recognise those who support the game week in week out in their club and community. “In addition we want to bring new people into rugby and will run a national campaign searching for 1,500 volunteers to join ‘The Pack’ with the aim of keeping them involved in the game

Page 19: Saturday 15 February Moseley U19 v Stoke oseley Matters” 4€¦ · Saturday 15th February Moseley U19 v Stoke ... YOUR CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GK KICKING COMPETITION ... Rugby

beyond 2015. “Members of ‘The Pack’ will help us to provide the teams and fans with a fantastic experience in 2015 and we look forward to opening the application process in March.” England 2015 Ambassador and World Cup winner, Jonny Wilkinson, said: “Throughout my career I have seen the vital role that volunteers play in the running of rugby clubs at all levels. Whether it’s helping with club administration, coaching, cleaning kit, driving teams across the country or stewarding on match days, these are the people who allow the game to thrive. It is great to recognise the rugby community through the volunteer programme for Rugby World Cup 2015, and also use this as an opportunity to get more people involved in the game.” Minister for Sport, Helen Grant MP, said: “Volunteers are the unsung heroes in community sport who ensure that rugby takes place up and down the country at the grassroots. It is great that many people from local rugby clubs will get the chance to volunteer at the biggest tournament in the game, as well as there being spaces for people new to the sport to be part of ‘The Pack.’ I know all those that are selected will do a fantastic job welcoming both the teams and fans from across the world.” Steve Grainger, RFU Rugby Development Director, added, "Volunteers are a key part of rugby's unique heritage and culture and we rely on them 365 days a year to run our clubs and constituent bodies, referee our games, coach players and introduce people to our great game in schools, colleges and universities. It is fantastic that the involvement of these volunteers has been recognised in ‘The Pack’ and I am sure they will add greatly to the atmosphere of the tournament. Recruitment of volunteers from outside of the rugby community also offers us a great chance to boost the numbers of volunteers in our game. We'll be working hard to encourage and support all applicants - successful and unsuccessful - to join the rugby family and make our great game part of their lives." Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) Chairman Bernard Lapasset also reinforced the importance of a successful volunteer programme, "Rugby is all about team work and the successful delivery of a tournament of this scale could not be possible without a team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, delivering the full range of services from transport, to welcoming supporters and teams, to accreditation. England has a rich tradition of excellent volunteers and being a superb host and ‘The Pack’ volunteers will have a key role to play in ensuring a memorable experience for all who attend England 2015." GREENE KING IPA CHAMPIONSHIP

Round 16 Preview

From the RFU The next round of Greene King IPA Championship fixtures begins with what appears to be a 'must-win' game for Ealing Trailfinders against Bedford Blues at Vallis Way on Friday night. Bottom-of-the table Ealing have yet to pick up a single point on home soil, Leeds Carnegie being the latest side to come away from a trip to west London with the spoils of victory following Saturday's crushing 46-11 win. Last season's National One champions have found try-scoring hard to come by at home, too, mustering just seven scores compared to 14 on the road. The good news for Ealing is that Bedford Blues have not travelled well this term, Mike Rayer's men winning just once in eight games away from Goldington Road and conceding 237 points in the process – the second highest total in the league behind Friday night's opponents. Blues had to come from behind to beat Ealing when the sides met on October 27, two tries from Ollie Dodge helping them to a 31-14 victory. Rotherham's position at the top of the Championship table was short-lived after they were well beaten by London Welsh at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday. The Exiles leapfrogged the Titans into first place as a result of the 47-16 win, with Leeds second and Rotherham now third going into Saturday's fixture against London Scottish. To stay in play-off contention fifth-placed Scottish realistically need to win at Clifton Lane for the first time in two years. The Titans did the double over Scottish last season, although both were closely-fought affairs with the Exiles picking up a losing bonus point on each occasion. This season's clash at the Athletic Ground could not have been closer either, the Titans achieving the narrowest of victories (24-23) thanks, in part, to a brace of tries from hooker Tom Cruse. Last weekend's 38-27 defeat to London Scottish means Plymouth have still to achieve back-to-back wins this season. But Albion, having got their Brickfields account up and running in tremendous style against London Welsh a fortnight ago, will fancy their chances of making it two home wins on the spin against 11th-placed Jersey. Equally, Jersey will be buoyed by Saturday's narrow win at home to Nottingham - their first win in seven attempts in the league. This will be the third time the sides have met this season, Plymouth having won both previous encounters despite trailing at half-time. Albion scored four tries in the final 25 minutes to win 41-27 on the opening day of the season at Sandy Park and followed it up with a 23-18 win at St Peter. Sunday's triple bill could be significant in terms of the standings at the top end of the table as London Welsh, Leeds Carnegie and fourth-placed Bristol are all in action. Carnegie would appear to have the easier of the tasks, on paper at least, as they are at home to Moseley, while Bristol and Welsh must travel to Nottingham and Cornish Pirates respectively - the latter game being shown live on Sky Sports. Leeds are on a 12-game winning streak in the league against Moseley, who they beat 27-18 at Billesley Common back in October. Of the 15 matches played since Bristol were demoted to this level four years ago, Bristol have won nine to Nottingham's five and there has been one draw. Bristol scored five tries to win 33-18 when the sides met at the Memorial Stadium in Round 5. London Welsh enjoyed a comfortable 41-6 success when they last played Pirates at home. First half tries from Seb Jewell and Carl Kirwan saw the home side take a commanding 20-6 lead into half-time, with Rob Lewis' 47th minute try all but ending the game as a contest. Welsh wrapped up the bonus point through Andy Titterrell with Tom May's intercept try adding the icing eight minutes from time. All Pirates could muster in reply was two Kieran Hallett penalties.

Moseley Ladies Squad 2012/13 The Ladies are looking for you As part of the Ladies squad preparations for next season they need to secure vital sponsorship as soon as possible. While being cost conscious and controlling their finances the team cannot function without the support of an external sponsor or sponsors. Without such funding the team may not be able to continue in its present form. Ladies rugby is an exciting, expanding aspect of the game and a great opportunity for a business to be associated with a unique part of rugby. In 2016 ladies rugby will be included (in the 7s format) in the 2015 Rio Olympic Games and is poised to become part of the IRB World 7s Series. At Moseley the team has consolidated their position in Midlands 2 and now boasts one of its healthiest playing squads in terms of numbers. The team has contributed players for Greater Birmingham, North Midlands & Midlands squads, as well as being title holders at a number of 7s tournaments across the country. This is an ideal opportunity for a company to associate themselves with a successful team in one of the fastest growing areas of rugby. If you know someone who would be interested in this opportunity please contact via [email protected] and we will pass the details on to the team Match Report Moseley 66 – 15 Lakenham Hewett

Moseley welcomed Lakenham Hewett to Billesley Common where they were keen to avenge the defeat from earlier in the season.

Moseley were without some players due to injury, however the performance of the entire squad would not have suggested this. Lakenham started the game with 14 players and Moseley looked to exploit the overlaps in attack. Moseley started strongly and put together some brilliant passages of play, however it was Lakenham who were first on the scoreboard, with their centre intercepting a loose pass and sprinting in from half way to score. This was unconverted.

Moseley didn’t panic and carried on playing well, tightening up the passes which was difficult in the swirling wind and patches of hail. The support play from Moseley was excellent throughout the game, whenever anyone broke through the line there was always someone on her shoulder to offer an offload or rucking support. Moseley’s first score was a typical Emma Shields try with swift hands down the backs, releasing Shields in space to outsprint the defence. This was converted by Nicola Sykes.

Moseley scored again soon after, with possibly their best try of the season. The forwards set up the ball through a solid ruck, Emily Dove passed to captain Ashleigh Aiston, who fed Laura Redhead at inside centre. After breaking the line Redhead was tackled and offloaded back to Aiston who fixed the defender to release Nicola Sykes into space. When she was caught the fullback then offloaded to blindside flanker Pas Holden, who was tackled and offloaded to Katie Boot to fix another defender with a perfectly timed pass to Michelle Finch, who wriggled through two defenders to score in the corner.

The forwards worked tirelessly all game in both attack and defence, dominating the breakdown and with Olly Gough, Susan Mabbett and Kerianne Meadowcroft putting in bone crunching tackles. Steph Warner and Boe Meaton were excellent and very effective in turning over the ball and setting up the next attack.

Emily Dove carried on her quick tap success, running in a try from outside the 22. Katie Boot has grown in confidence over the past few games and was running excellent lines from outside centre. This led to her first try for Moseley and four minutes later her second. Moseley finished

Page 31: Saturday 15 February Moseley U19 v Stoke oseley Matters” 4€¦ · Saturday 15th February Moseley U19 v Stoke ... YOUR CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GK KICKING COMPETITION ... Rugby

off the scoring for the first half with Ashleigh Aiston stealing the ball in her own 22 and sprinting almost the length of the pitch to score.

Hal Time: Moseley 34 – 5 Lakenham Hewett.

Lakenham rallied at half time and, after a few injuries, and started to make progress up the pitch. Their inside centre always looked dangerous with ball in hand and crashed through the Moseley defence to score her second try.

Moseley went straight up the other end and scored through prop Kerianne Meadowcroft outpacing the Lakenham defence. This was swiftly followed by Emma Shields’ second try after good hands from the backs releasing her into space and she stepped the final defender.

Moseley then started to use their bench with and immediate impact. Caz Goodman came on at 12 and broke through the line to set up the next attack. She fixed the final defender with a perfectly timed pass to Ashleigh Aiston to finish off the move.

Moseley’s discipline started to falter, with a number of offsides in quick succession. They regrouped though and the defence was excellent, particularly around the fringes of the rucks and mauls. Moseley then made a triple substitution with Beks Rothnie, Laura Knott and Sham Begum coming on to provide fresh legs. All three got stuck in immediately and assisted in setting up Emma Shields for her hattrick. Nicola Brown then came on for the final ten minutes, with Moseley defending strongly to make yards out of their 22. Clare Bowyer continued to work hard in attack, offloading the ball to Kerianne Meadowcroft to be able to power over the line for her second try.

Moseley’s final try came through further excellent support play with Caz Goodman dummying through the defence, offloading to Emma Shields, who passed off to Nicola Sykes to run in her 17th try of the season, which she duly converted.

To Lakenham’s credit they never gave up throughout the game and were very physical in both attack and defence. This brilliant attitude was rewarded right at the death with their 12 crashing over from short range to secure her hattrick.

Final score – Moseley 66 – 15 Lakenham Hewett

This game really showed the progress that has been made by the squad this year. The passing and support play has really improved, as well as the determined defence. We’ve had a lot of new players into the squad, some with experience, some without and all have really settled into the team. It was the best game I’ve seen Pas Holden, Kerianne Meadowcroft and Michelle Finch play. Laura Redhead and Megan Satterley have really grown into their roles and are looking more and more confident each week. Special mention to Olly Gough who played whilst looking grey for most of the game (great commitment!) and to Ashleigh Aiston for ably stepping in as captain and leading the team.

Back of the match went to Katie Boot for her excellent space creating lines of running and fearless tackling. Forward of the match went to Susan Mabbett who was everywhere making hard hitting tackles and leading the defence.

Moseley travel to Novocastrians next week in the Quarter Final of the RFU Intermediate Cup. The final league game is then away to Lichfield on 2 March where Moseley will look to finish the campaign on a high!

Match Reports

Our reporters won’t be beaten

Is there is no ends our intrepid M&J reporters will go to to get us a report? This week the U8’s found themselves without a piece of paper to write on. Did that stop them? Of course it didn’t!

Well done guys Now if we can just recruit some more like you to cover all the age groups that would be great.

U10's

Boys and girls played very well. Nuneaton brought over 20 players, we had 12! Game 1 - Nuneaton 2 v Moseley 1 Try scored by Hugo Game 2 - Nuneaton 0 v Moseley 2 Tries Hugo and Elliott Game 3 - Nuneaton 6 v Moseley 0

From the restart good pressure forces Nuneaton into touch, Moseley quickly restart and Joe runs the length of the pitch only to be tagged on the line but good support from Jonathan to go over and score, 10-0. Nuneaton reply with a quick try of there own to make it, 10-5. Another quick restart and Joe makes a weaving run to score and make it 15-5 at half time. Moseley start the second half and are forced into touch, Nuneaton respond with good teamwork but persistent tagging by Louis and Jonathan holds them up only for Nuneaton to change direction to go in the other corner but George races across to tag, but to no avail Nuneaton score a good team try to make it 15-10. Moseley restart but are quickly turned over. Nuneaton reply and score to make it 15-15. With time running out Moseley restart quickly and great teamwork from Ethan and Louis set up Stanley to go over in the corner as the final whistle goes to make it 20-15 to Moseley, a great game played in a great spirit by all. MOSELEY PLAYERS ASSOCIATION

Past and Present Players of Moseley Rugby Club

“Keeping the spirit alive”

Membership of Moseley Players Association (MPA) is open to anyone who has played for ANY Moseley team, including MWRFC and Moseley Oak. This includes anyone who has had a

significant involvement with managing, coaching or providing on-field care to the players and was therefore an essential part of the playing team. The MPA plays a key role in keeping former players in touch with each other and involved in the Club and assisting the Club in any ways it can. Please contact the Membership Secretary Roy Kerr (contact details are at the end of this

section) for details and a membership application form.

We are always pleased to receive any snippets of information about any old players from any of your eras. Please email Moseley Matters at [email protected].

The MPA AGM & Annual Reunion – 26th April. Book the date!

Yes, the date for the next AGM and Reunion Lunch is booked by us, so do make sure that it is by you! Saturday 26th April is the 1st team’s last home match, when Moseley plays Plymouth Albion. After the early part of the season’s extraordinary fight-back down at Brickfields, when Moseley recovered from being 6-31 down to earn a 34-34 draw, this should be quite some match! Watch out for further announcements about this increasingly popular event during the next few weeks. Last year, we had a record attendance (by a huge margin) of 130 MPA members, guests and friends. Perhaps we can beat that record this year!

Once again, Jonathan Hill will be organising the now traditional Touch Sevens Tournament in the morning. Someone needs to stop Pete Shillingford’s team from making it three tournament wins in a row! If you fancy your chances, or just want to play in it for laughs (but Shilly won’t be!), contact Jon on 07896 623388 or [email protected].

Bits and Pieces

MPA Ties & Bow Ties – three designs of MPA ties and one bow tie are available for purchase at £10.00 each including postage. Please contact Bryan Skeeles for details and orders.
