STOCKPORT is a large parish on tbe borders of Lancashire, ineluding the townshipsof BRAMALL, BREDBU.&Y, BBDiNI!\GTON, HYDE, M..utrLE, NORBURY, OFFE.RTON, RolfiLEYor C.H..A.DKIRK, STOCKFORT, STOCKFORT EXCHELLS, T01tltI5GTON, and WER!iETB', in theunion- to which it gives its name; DUKTh""FIELD, with part of the borough of STALE!­BRIDGE, in the union of Ashton-under-Lyne, in Lancashire, and DISLEy-STA..~Y, mHayfield union, Derbyshire, containing altogetber, by the ceo,us of 1861, 98,005 inhabi·tants, and 25,175 acres.

Stockport is an extensive manufacturing township, borough, and market toWD, inStockport union, containing, by the census of 1861, 30,746 inhabitants, and 1740 acres;in the hundred and deanery of Macelesfield, diocese and arcbdeaconry of Cbester, NorthCheshire, 6 miles south-east from Manchester, 46 north-east from Chester, Hi .fromMaoclesfield, 2st from Crewe, and 182i from London. This place, altbough not mentionedin Domesday survey, is considered to be ver,}' ancient, and formerly a Roman station, b~tfrom what source the name of the town is derived is somewhat doubtful, ancient histon­ans baving spelt it Stopport, Stopworth, and Stopford, at different periods. The Merseyruns through the town, dividing it from the hamlet of Heaton Norris, Lancashire, and iscrossed on the Manchester road by a handsome bridge of eleven arches. The originalgrant for a market at Stockport appears to have been about tbe year 1260. The market­day is on Friday, but in consequence of the great increase of population, an extensiveprovision market is also held on Saturday. There are cattle fairs on the 1st January, the4thand 25th March, the 1st aud 25th May, the 23rd and 24th October in each year. The town has considerably improved during thelast quarter of a century, and numeronsand extensive cotton manufactories have been erected in and a.round Stockport to meetthe requirements of the ~crease in the cotton trade, whIch has long been the sbple tradeof the town. Stockport IS the centre of a large manufacturing dIstrict, =d partIcipatedlargely in the prosperity of the neighbouring city of Manchester up to the recent CQttonfamine, since wh!c~ .time, .it) with other cotton ~anufacturingtowps:, has ~suff~rec;l. greatlyfrom.the depressIOn In trade. The gromd on whIch Stockport is bnilt is singularly unevenand Irregular, and the approaches to the M..arket Place are circuitous and difficult forstrangers to find, and it cannot be reached from any side (except Churchgate) Withoutmounting a formidable hill j but it is proposed to erect a high level bridge, connecting itwith St. Peter's gate..and the Wellington road, so. as to make ~he entrance from that partof the town more available for general traffic. It IS covered WIth a glass roof placed uponiron pillars, thus affording partial protection from the w~ather for the various partIesattending the market. . .

The London and NorthWesternRailwayintersects the town, and passes over a.magniJicentviaduct of twenty-two arches, at a ·height of 108 feet above the bed of the river. A newline is also in the course of-formation to Timperley, being an extension of the Manchester,Sheffield, and LincolnshIre line from Hyde, which will afford a mnch more direct com­munication with Liverpool and other parts of Lancashire than the present route throughManchester.

The MOTHER CHURCH, dedicated to St. Mary, is a handsome Gothic edifice, on ,the eastside of the Market Place, which was re-built in 1817, and consists ofunve, chancel, and sideaisles, with a noble tower, containing a peal of eight bells. The chancel was rebuilt in1848, and.-the church then underwent a thorough "renovation. The living is a. rectory,valued at £1882 per annum, in the incumbency of·the Rev. Charles Kenrick Prescot, M.A..,and the patronage of Lord Vernon. The rectory house is situate on an extensive emi­nence in Church-gate, commanding 50memagnificentviews ofthe town and neighbourhood..

The CHURCH of ST. PETEn is a plain building, in St.Peter's.square, whIch was erectedin 1768, hy William Wright, Esq. The living is a perpetual cursey, Jnthe incumbency ofthe Rev. Henry Creswell, valued at £220 per annum, and in .the patronage of the Rev. H.Wright. The Rev. John Meredith is the officiating minister.

ST. THO>US'S CHURCH, between Wellington road, south, and Hlli gate, is a handsomeedifice in the Grecian style, surmounted .by a cupola; it was opened. in 1825. The.livingis a perpetual curacy, valued at £110 per annum, with residence, in;the incumbency ofthe Rev. Joseph Taylor, M.A., and the patronage of Lord VernoD, and on the next vacancyof the ,rectory of Stockport, a portion of that living will be added thereto.

STOCKPOltT GREA.T MOOR CHURCH is a plain brick building in the GothIc;style, w:hIcl>was.erected in 1852. The living, in the incumJ>.ency of the Rev. J.Coombes, isa per­petual coracy, valued at £80 per annum, in the patronage of J. Marriott, Esq.

The CATHOLIC CHURCH, dedicated to St. Josepb, situate in St. Peter's gate, is a hand­some GothIc edifice, 103 reet long, and 70 reet high, coutain.il!g ail. ap.e, nave, and twoaisles, with vestry for the priests, and also ODe for the acolytes~ _.It is _not thoroughly:finished, but refiects great credit upon the archItect, M. E. Haillield, Esq" of Sheffield.It was opened for diviDe service on the 2Mh June, 1862. It contains a magnificent, rich­toned organ,which was ,built by Messrs. Gray and David:son, .of.London. '.;rhere areexcellent schools for children of both sexes and infant~with tea.chere' residences attached,in connection with the above church, W blch have been very highly spoken of by the Go­vernment inspector..

The Wesleyans have a noble chapel in Tiviotdale,capable of accommodating 2500people, and another in Hill gate.

The Independents, Unitarian" Baptists, Society of Friends, and Association Methodistshave each of them places of worshIp here.

The MEcHA...'ucs' INSTITUTION, LIBRARY, and REA.DL~G RoOMS is a noble building, inWellington road, south, and is abundsutly supplied with nearly all the papars andperiodicals of the present time.

The RIFLE VOLUNTEERS' BARlUCKS is a handsome building in Greek street, which waserected in 1861; it oontains an excellent drill shed, 60 yards long by 25 wide, with depotfor arms, to which is also attached an excellent library and reading room, for the use ofthe volunteers, supplied with the principal papers and periodicals of the day.

There is a Free Grammar School, which was found by Sir Edward Shaa, in 1417 whoalso endowed .it with £10 per. annum. The .Grammar .Schoo~ in the Wellington'road,which \vas built by the GoldsmIths' Company, In 1831, Wl.th reSIdences for the mastersforms a. handsome group of buildings. ]'ifty scholars are instrt:cted fre~ of expense, andthe remainder pay a capitation fee of £1 Is. Od. per quarter, wJ:ich goas mto the hands ofthe Goldsmiths' Company, who pay the salaries of the variOUS masters. There are agreat quantity of schools in various parts of Stockport, including National, British, andnumerous Sunday Schools, in connection with every denomination of religionists, atford­ing to all classes the means of a good education at a very moderate rate.

The VERNOS PARK, which is entered from Churchgate and Turncroft lane on the oneaide, and New Bridge lane on the other, is about half a mile from the Market Place.Some splendid views are obtained from the elevated portions, and it affords: a healthy andpleasing recrea.tion ground for the public generally.

HE!.TON' NORJUS is an extensive suburb of Stockport, on the north side of the Mersey,the ATeater portion of which is included in the borongh of Stockport; it is in the parishof Manchester, Stockport union, and contains, by the census of 1861., 16,333 inhabitants, i

and 2108 acres, in the hundred. of Salford, diocese of Manchester, archbishopric of York, I[

South Lancashire. The living is a rectory, in the incumbency of the &v. CharlesBabington, M.A., and the patronage of the Bishop of Manchester. The Chw;ch, dedi- ~cated to Our Saviour, is a handsome cruciform edifice, in Wellington Road, north, which waserected in 1846; it is in the early English style of architeeture, surmounted by a lofty .•pire, containing a clock witl:t three dials.

PORTWOOD is a hamlet and suburb of Stockport, adjoining thereto on the east, but ispart of the township of Brinnington, and is included in the census returns for that town- (ship. The Church, dedicated to St. Paul, which was opened for divine service in 1851, ris a fine Gothic edifice, with a handsome spire aDd one bell. The living is a perpetualcuracy, in the incumbency of the Rev. Jeremiah Coombes, and in the alternate patronageof the Crown and the Bishop of Chester. The WesleyanBrunswick chapel is situatedhere, and there are excellent schools in connection with that denominatioD, for childrenof both sexes and infants. The Wesleyan ~ew Connexion have also a place of worshiphere. There are several extensive cotton factories in this suburb. The Portwood NewsRoom, at the earner of John street and Brewery street, was formerly a Wesleyan school,and was purchased by, and fitted up at the expense of, Edward Carrington Howard:Esq., in 1861, who has kindly presented it to the pUblie, and is still its principal sup- ~'porter. The library contains upwards of 800 volumes, and the reading room is suppliedwith all the leading papers and periodieals; in addition to whh.·h there is a splendidlecture room, also a smoking room, and a skittle alley; it being the desire of the ~honourable donor to provide the neighbourhood with the means of rational and usefulamusement, at a cost quite within the reach of every working man or woman, the entrancefee being only 6d. for every man above 18, under 18, 2d.; for females 2d.; and a weekly ,subscription of one penny from eaeh. .

EDGELEY is a suburb, adjoining to, and on the west side of, Stockport, in the township ~of Cheadle Moseley, and is included in the census returns of that plaee. The Church, 'I

BRAMIiALL, or BRAMALL, formerly BROMH.ALL, is a township in Stockportparish and union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1615 inhabitants, and 3250 acres; 3miles south from Stockport. The ancient hall, the seat of Lieutenant-Colonel WilliamDavenport, J.P., (who is lord of the manor) is a peculiar structure of timber and plasterpainted black and white, some parts of which appear to have been built as early as th~reign of Edward rv. The Domestic Chapel, at the sonth end, is snpposed to have beenadded about the time of Richard ill The London and North Western Railway to Mao­clesfield passes through the lordship, and has a station at Pownall Green•. HAZEL GROVE, originally called BULLOCK SMITHY, is a;hamlet of Bramhall, bntis sitnatem the several townships of Bramhall, Bosden, Norbury,. and Torkington, 3 miles southfrom Stockport. BREDBURY is a township in Stockport parish and uniou, containing, hy the censusof 1861, 3408 inhabitants, and 2521 acres; in the hundred and deanery of Macclesfield,archdeaconry and diocese of Chester, North Cheshire; 2k miles north-east from Stock­port. The living is a perpetual curacy, "Valued at £243 per annum, in the incumbency ofthe Rev. James Whittaker, B..A., and the patronage of the Crown and the Bishop ofChester alternately. The Chnrch, dedicated to Saint Mark, was erected in 1848, and is ahandsome edifice in the early English style, consisting of nave; chancel, and aisles; withet tower, surmounted by pinnacles. It is calculated to seat 862 persons, of ,vhich 520 arefree. There is a good National School close to the church. The Independents and\Vesleyan and Primithoe Methodists have places of worship here. There are several col­lieries in the neighbourhood, which produce but an inferior coal, it being mostly used forengines. There are some charitahle hequests for the benefit of the poor. J. '.!'heliving is a perpetual curacy, in the incumbency of the Rev. Charles James SatterthwaIte,M.A., and the patronage of the vicar of Stockport, annual value £120. The 0hurc~ is ahandsome Gothic edifice, dedicated to All Saints, \vith tower, and six: bells. The Vll~eis situate on the borders of Derbyshire, and the neighbouring hills afford some beautifulviews. of the surrounding country. There is an excellent fountain, for the use of theinhabitants, in the centre of the village. The National Sunday School has an endowmentof £50 per annum. The Wesleyans have a chapel and Day and Sunday School here, alsoa library, which was presented by Mr. Vickers, ·for the use of the scholars and the 'Work...men at his mill. DUKINFIELD.DUKINFIELD, or DUCKENFIELD, is a large manufacturing townsbip in Stockport .i,

parish, union of Ashton-under.Lyne, Lancashire, a great portion of which is included in '(the borough of Stalybridge; the census return in 1861 being as follows :-Dukinfieldtownship, 15,024 inhabitants j Stalybridge part of borounh, 14,929 inhabitants; total,29,953 inhabitants, and 1690 acres of land. It is in the hu;dred and dennery of Maccles­field, archdeaconry and diocese of Uhester, North Cheshire; 6.~ miles north-east fromStockport, 6 east from Manchester, and 185 from London. The :Peak Forest Canal, andthe Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway, pass through the township. It is a .place of very ancient date, and was called by the Sl1Xons .Dockenveldt, and formed theboundary of the original kingdoms of Northumbria and 1Iercia, in the Saxon heptarcby,and ~oth sides of the stream were consi~erably forLified by each party. Colonel RobertDukin1ield, who was then owner of tlns manor, from whence he took his name, \Vas anoted officer of Cromwell's anny, and was a member of the infamous court-martial atCbester, ~hich se,:tenced the Earl of Derby to death, and it is stated that Henry Er~­shaw, havmg obtamed a pardon for the Earl, placed it in the hallds of Colonel Dukia·field, who suppressed it.
