Acceptable and what we have to payfor innovative, life-saving drug
treatments
Unacceptable and jeopardizes the veryinnovation that is a hallmark of the
American health care system
Thinking more about prescription drug costs, there are certain types
of prescription drugs prescribed for complex conditions known as
specialty drugs that either very expensive and/or need to be given
by a physician or other clinician and often given in the doctors office
or other health care setting. One recent example of this is a drug
that was developed to treat hepatitis C. Some early tests indicate
that this drug when used in combination with other treatments could
in many instances cure individuals with hepatitis C, but the
company manufacturing this drug has priced the treatment at
$84,000 for a 12 week course of treatment which is $1,000 per day.
Thinking specifically about this drug, the price is:

Collaborate with other manufacturers to reduce the costs of R&D
Provide more transparency to consumers about how effective the
new treatment is in relation to existing treatments
Require drug companies to disclose their actual R&D costs for a
particular drug
Provide more transparency to consumers about the cost of new
treatments versus old treatments
Cut back on expensive direct-to-consumer marketing
Commit to limit price increases for existing drugs to no more than
the rate of inflation
Publish a list of all price increases for existing products on their website so
that consumers can see how the price of drugs is increasing from year to year
Require drug companies to submit information about the value of a medicine for
example, will it reduce other health care costs and over what period of time
Below is a list of steps that could be taken to help increase transparency. Tell me on a scale of 1
to 10, 1 being a bad idea and 10 being a good idea what you think of each idea
