RIFLE PRACTICE. A Good Many Marksmen at Schnelzen Park, San Rafael. Bull's-Eye Contests of the California and Grutli Clubs- Medal Shoot of the Tnr- ners-The California Cadets. The threatening weather yesterday did not prevent a large number of devotees of the spiral groove from indulging in ttieir favorite pastime of putting holes in the de- lusive bull's-eye. The shooting range at Schuetzen Park was well filled during a greater portion of the day by a considerable number of rifle- men. Although the day proved to be dark and gloomy there were some very good scores made, and on the whole it was better than if the sun had been shining brightly and caused a glare on the targ«t3. The California Schuetzen Club and the Grutli Rifla Club held their monthly bull's- eye shoot, and the members showed by their enthusiasm whenever a red flag was waved by the markers how anxious they were to strike that desired spot. In bull's- eye contests it is necessary to place the bul- let within three inches of the center in order for the shot to count, and whenever the accurate rifleman does this the marker indicates the same by waiving a red Hag. The Turners' Shooting Section were at the range to compete for the medals which the club offers monthly, and many close scores were the result. The cadets of the California Schnetzen Club were also out in open competition to indulge in a medal and bull's-eye contest. THE CALIFOKNIACLUB. There is always a good deal of enthusiasm and good-natured rivalry attached to a bull's-eye contest. No marksman can tell the real value of his shot. All that he knows is that when a bull's-eye is marked in bis favor that he lias come within tinea inches of the center. .But how much nearer he does not know until the contest is ended and all the shots are measured. The high- est prize is always awarded to the marks- man who comes the nearest to the center, not to*h« oho who scores the most bull's- eyes. One rifleman may make a dozen bull's-eyes in his twenty shots and not win a prize; whilt; his opponent may make but one and come out head man. The lucky men m yesterday's contest are as follows: Jehu Cisco lg, F. C. Muller, K. Btettia, F. KuliN, A. Johnson, 11. Oambel, 11. ileetti, William Ebrenpfort, J. Stautou, Dr. Rogers, O. Oisl, A.RoepKe. T. J. Carroll, 11. K. ISrown, 11. Ens*, 1. tienret, 11. Stettin, F. AUlrger, William Gliudfcnian, i\ lisuimtte. THE GRUTLI CLUB. The Grutlis are regular visitors at the range and never miss an opportunity to show their devotion to rifle practice. The winners at yesterday's bull's-eye contest are in order as follows: A. yon Weyl. U. Dletlielm, F. Gehret. F. Baumjjartner, AlUehret, Joseph Specie, Jacob ltacbinaao. THE TUISNEUS. The medal shoot of the Turners was well attended, and much rivalry was shown to win the. trophies that the club places at the disposal of marksmen. The result of yes- terday's contest was: Champion medal, 11. H. Brown, 423 ring?; firs! Class medal. 11. Enge, 374; seeuud class medal, 11. Stetllo, 3.53; thud class medal, F. KoiBSMr, 355. The Jacoby medal for the first best shot was won by William Glindeman with 25 ring*, and the Ileizman medal for the last best shot was won by 11. R. Urown with 23 rings, THE CADETS. If the cadets keep on improving as of late tiiey will soon graduate champions. The good score of 405 rings made t>y I. Wertheimer yesterday shows that there is good metal in oar young marksmen, and that in a short while many of them will be able to hold their own with the best of our older marksmen. The winners at the con- test were: First class medal, I.Wertheimor, 405 rings; second class medal, P. Bohr, S6l ring*. The medal fur the last best shot was won by P. Bohr with 29 ring 3. The best bull's-eye was won by P. Bohr; second, C. Novak; third, I* Beubold ; fourth, F. Keihl. . BEFORE THE BUTTS. Jeremiah Sheeliy Captures a Trophy and Medal at Shell Mound. Shell Mound Park seemed to be a seat of war yesterday, for a continuous firing of rities tool; place. Club medal and bulls* eye shoots had the effect of drawing a larger crowd, and great interest was taken in the contests. Company E of the Third Infantry shot for the Tobiu trophy, and Jeremiah Sheeny had the pleasure of carrying it home. Mr. Sheeny also captured the medal in tee Knights of the Red Branch Rifle Club. Editor Morning Call: There is an oak tree growing just opposite the depot in this town that attracts considerable attention year after year from the fact, that it is in- variably the first tree of its kind to don its pretty spring dress of glossy green leaves, and, oh, what a beautiful green are those leaves. Green has been of late, I believe, the favorite color of Dame Fashion; it would ever remain so if man could but Tie with na- ture in her exquisite colorings, the tints and shades of this, her favorite hue. The canneries have had a most successful year and there is talk of additions and im- provements to those mammoth and seem- ingly perfectly arranged establishments. The only must-condenser in the State and the largest distillery in the world, itis said, with a capacity for making 15 gallons of brandy per day, are found in the modest little village of Geyserville, eight miles north of Healdsbarg. Geyserville, although scarcely more than a town in name, is sit- uated in the midst of a beautiful and won- derfully productive country, uatween Healdsbnrg and Gryserville there are a number of line farms, and here is situated the well-known Litton Spring*' property, Between Geyserville and Clovcrdale (ten miles north of the former place) are many fine vineyards and the valuable uroperty of the Italian-Swiss colony. On the west is the beautilul fertile valley of Upper Dry Creek, through which is the delightful drive to the popular Sulphur, or, as they are generally called, SkagfS Springs. Across Russian River, which is spanned by a line county bridge, in an easterly direction from Geyservilie, is the well-known Alexander Valley, famous alike for its wheat, its fruit, vine?, pretty girls and the pleasant, har- monious neighborhood of intellectual, in- dustrious people. The weather has been quite pleasant dur- ing the week and very favorable to the growth of all vegetation. The rain that is now coming down so quietly and steadily is very welcome, for it will further the growth of the hundreds of young fruit trees that have been planted dining the last few weeks. Internal Revenue Collector M. W. 11. Debyoa was in town last week on official business. Miss Emma Truett has returned from a delightful visit to San Jose and San Fran- cisco. Air. A. Koenig of San Francisco was a visitor to liealdsburg recently. Miss Ida Carey of Duncans Mills has been enjoying a pleasant visit with her friend, Miss Mac Raymond of Healdsburg. Mr. Henry Lagan has returned to his home after a inert stay in the metropolis. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wattles are sojourn- ing at Mill Brook Farm. Mrs. P. 11. Wentworth of San Francisco has been the guest of relatives in our pleasant little town. Mrs. William Lnngmoro, tho wifo of our worthy County Assessor of Santa Rosa, and Mrs. James Watson of Bodega, paid a short visit to their relatives, Mr. aud Mrs. William Ferguson, during the week. Mr. 1. Merchant, one of our most prom- inent business men, has returned to llealdi- burg after an extended tour in the interests of his cannery. Services in which a number of our cit- izens are interested are being" held in the church of the Seventh-day Adventists. They are connected with the Ministerial Convention, or Biblical Institute, which convened last Saturday and will remain in session until March 7. Preachers and Bible- workers from all tim neighboring States and Territories wiil be present, and it is expected that there will ho nearly n hundred of the above in attendance. Neat I v printed invitations are distributed through- out the town, inviting the general public to attend the meetings. These people, while holding rather peculiar relicious views, have a zeal worthy of imitation. The revival being held nt the Baptist Church in this town has continued for sev- eral weeks, and the interest seems un- abated. Quite a number have joined the church by letter and by profession of faith. Of the latter ten were baptized by the ceremony of immersion last Friday "after- noon. The place selected for the sacred rite was a beautiful spot a short distance from town en Dry Creek, which name, by tlr- way, is a misnomer during the winter months. At this time of the year a fine stream is flowing to join Eussiar. River "on its clear, winding way to the sea." One by oiie the candidates for baptism were led Into the water by the minister and baptized. The scene was a most impressive oup, and tho banks of the stream and the roads lead- ing to the place were tilled with hundreds of interested spectators. It is generally conceded that church "sociables" are not usually what the name represents— a meeting oi friends, who spend a pleasant evening in a sociable manner under the auspices of the ladies connected with one of the different churches. Hut the "sociable" at the residence of Mrs. K. Ham- ilton last Monday evening was true to tin name. Whether tie kind hostess and the ladies connected with the Christian C^urc ; of flealdsburg are adepts at entertaining, or whether they have the. happy tact of draw- ing to their receptions a goodly share oi congenial natures, the fact remains thn; every one who was present reports having had a most enjoyable time and expresses the wish that these pleasant gatherings will be more frequent In the future. jieakUb-jLiv.Feb. 17, ISPS. Speaking of the exchange between tin Czar of Itussia and Senator Stanford o! Orloff stallions for Palo Alto Electioneer mares, the Senator, in a recent interview, . said: "I was greatly struck with tiie Orloff hones when 1 was in Russia two years ago. They arc large trotters, who travel ea»y. and are greatly appreciated in the Czar'- kingdom. They average from 16 to it; 1 , baud*. They are speedy, and can trot, m a rule, inside three minutes. Tiio weed runs very even, and for Uiat reason itis easy to match them periectly." "Will they compare with the American horses in point of speed?" "No," replied the California Senator, wit', an air of pardonable pride, "there are no norses in the world to compare without. These Orloff*, however, are possessed of very speedy qualities. 1 saw one harnesses to a heavy cart on a race track at St. Peters- burg trot a mile in 2:31." "When will you ship your mares to St. Petersburg?" "Not until I return to California, wbicli will probably be in June. The Russian Consul-Geueral requested that I should se- lect the fillies myself." "What ace horses will you send the Czar?' "I have not fully decided, but I think four-year-olds will best meet the require- ments. They are to be used fur breeding purposes, and that 1 should regard as the most suitable age." "When will the Orloff arrive?" " 1 do not expect them until I have shipped my fillies to St. Petersburg. 1 don't know what the Czar's master-of-uorst* proposes doing with the mar*.-*. It is pos- sible he may desire to mix tno breed, or that he may wish to raise standard-bred Ameri- can trotters. As far as I am personal! concerned i object as a general rule to mix the breed. RIFLE PRACTICE.

A Good Many Marksmen at

Schnelzen Park, San Rafael.

Bull's-Eye Contests of the California and

Grutli Clubs- Medal Shoot of the Tnr-

ners-The California Cadets.

The threatening weather yesterday didnot prevent a large number of devotees ofthe spiral groove from indulging in ttieirfavorite pastime of putting holes in the de-lusive bull's-eye.

The shooting range at Schuetzen Parkwas well filled during a greater portion ofthe day by a considerable number of rifle-men. Although the day proved to be darkand gloomy there were some very goodscores made, and on the whole it was betterthan ifthe sun had been shining brightlyand caused a glare on the targ«t3.

The California Schuetzen Club and theGrutliRifla Club held their monthly bull's-eye shoot, and the members showed bytheir enthusiasm whenever a red flag waswaved by the markers how anxious theywere to strike that desired spot. In bull's-eye contests it is necessary to place the bul-let within three inches of the center inorder for the shot to count, and wheneverthe accurate rifleman does this the markerindicates the same by waiving a red Hag.

The Turners' Shooting Section were atthe range to compete for the medals whichthe club offers monthly, and • many closescores were the result.

The cadets of the California SchnetzenClub were also out in open competition toindulge in a medal and bull's-eye contest.

THE CALIFOKNIACLUB.There is always a good deal of enthusiasm

and good-natured rivalry attached to abull's-eye contest. No marksman can tellthe real value of his shot. Allthat he knowsis that when a bull's-eye is marked in bisfavor that he lias come within tinea inchesof the center. .But how much nearer hedoes not know until the contest is endedand all the shots are measured. The high-est prize is always awarded to the marks-man who comes the nearest to the center, not to*h« oho who scores the most bull's-eyes. One rifleman may make a dozenbull's-eyes in his twenty shots and not wina prize; whilt; his opponent may make butone and come out head man. The luckymen myesterday's contest are as follows:

Jehu Cisco lg, F. C. Muller, K. Btettia, F.KuliN, A. Johnson, 11. Oambel, 11. ileetti,William Ebrenpfort, J. Stautou, Dr. Rogers,O. Oisl, A.RoepKe. T. J. Carroll, 11. K. ISrown,11. Ens*, 1. tienret, 11. Stettin, F. AUlrger,William Gliudfcnian, i\ lisuimtte.

THE GRUTLI CLUB.The Grutlis are regular visitors at the

range and never miss an opportunity toshow their devotion to rifle practice. Thewinners at yesterday's bull's-eye contestare in order as follows:

A. yon Weyl. U. Dletlielm, F. Gehret. F.Baumjjartner, AlUehret, Joseph Specie, Jacobltacbinaao.

Editor Morning Call: There is an oaktree growing just opposite the depot in thistown that attracts considerable attentionyear after year from the fact, that it is in-variably the first tree of its kind to don itspretty spring dress of glossy green leaves, and, oh, what a beautiful green are thoseleaves. Green has been of late,Ibelieve, the favorite color ofDame Fashion; itwouldever remain so ifman could but Tie withna-ture in her exquisite colorings, the tints andshades of this, her favorite hue.

The canneries have had a most successfulyear and there is talk of additions and im-provements to those mammoth and seem-ingly perfectly arranged establishments.

The only must-condenser in the State andthe largest distillery in the world, itis said, with a capacity for making 15 gallons ofbrandy per day, are found in the modestlittle village of Geyserville, eight milesnorth of Healdsbarg. Geyserville, althoughscarcely more than a town in name, is sit-uated in the midst of a beautiful and won-derfully productive country, uatweenHealdsbnrg and Gryserville there are anumber of line farms, and here is situatedthe well-known Litton Spring*' property,Between Geyserville and Clovcrdale (tenmiles north of the former place) are manyfine vineyards and the valuable uroperty ofthe Italian-Swiss colony. On the west isthe beautilul fertile valley of Upper DryCreek, through which is the delightfuldrive to the popular Sulphur, or, as they aregenerally called, SkagfS Springs. AcrossRussian River, which is spanned by a linecounty bridge, in an easterly direction fromGeyservilie, is the well-known AlexanderValley, famous alike for its wheat, its fruit, vine?, pretty girls and the pleasant, har-monious neighborhood of intellectual, in-dustrious people.

The weather has been quite pleasant dur-ing the week and very favorable to thegrowth of all vegetation. The rain that isnow coming down so quietly and steadily isvery welcome, for itwillfurther the growthof the hundreds of young fruit trees thathave been planted dining the last fewweeks.

Internal Revenue Collector M. W. 11.Debyoa was in town last week on officialbusiness.

Miss Emma Truett has returned from adelightful visit to San Jose and San Fran-cisco.

Air. A. Koenig of San Francisco was avisitor to liealdsburg recently.

Miss Ida Carey of Duncans Mills hasbeen enjoying a pleasant visit with herfriend, Miss Mac Raymond of Healdsburg.

Mr. Henry Lagan has returned to hishome after a inert stay in the metropolis.

Mr.and Mrs. Jack Wattles are sojourn-ing at MillBrook Farm.

Mrs. P. 11. Wentworth of San Franciscohas been the guest of relatives in ourpleasant little town.

Mrs. William Lnngmoro, tho wifo of ourworthy County Assessor of Santa Rosa, and Mrs. James Watson of Bodega, paid ashort visit to their relatives, Mr.aud Mrs.WilliamFerguson, during the week.

Mr. 1. Merchant, one of our most prom-inent business men, has returned to llealdi-burg after an extended tour in the interestsof his cannery.

Services in which a number of our cit-izens are interested are being" held in thechurch of the Seventh-day Adventists. They are connected with the MinisterialConvention, or Biblical Institute, whichconvened last Saturday and willremain insession until March 7. Preachers andBible-workers from all tim neighboring

States and Territories wiilbe present, andit is expected that there will ho nearly nhundred of the above inattendance. NeatIvprinted invitations are distributed through-out the town, inviting the general public toattend the meetings. These people, whileholding rather peculiar relicious views, have a zeal worthy of imitation.

The revival being held nt the BaptistChurch in this town has continued for sev-eral weeks, and the interest seems un-abated. Quite a number have joined thechurch by letter and by profession of faith.Of the latter ten were baptized by theceremony of immersion last Friday "after-noon. The place selected for the sacred ritewas a beautiful spot a short distance fromtown en Dry Creek, which name, by tlr-way, is a misnomer during the wintermonths. At this time of the year a finestream is flowing to join Eussiar. River "onits clear, winding way to the sea." One byoiie the candidates for baptism were led Intothe water by the minister and baptized. The scene was a most impressive oup, andtho banks of the stream and the roads lead-ing to the place were tilled withhundredsof interested spectators.

It is generally conceded that church"sociables" are not usually what the namerepresents— a meeting oi friends, who spenda pleasant evening in a sociable mannerunder the auspices of the ladies connectedwith one of the different churches. Hut the"sociable" at the residence of Mrs. K.Ham-ilton last Monday evening was true to tinname. Whether tie kind hostess and theladies connected with the Christian C^urc ;

of flealdsburg are adepts at entertaining, orwhether they have the. happy tact ofdraw-ing to their receptions a goodly share oicongenial natures, the fact remains thn;every one who was present reports havinghad a most enjoyable time and expresses thewish that these pleasant gatherings willbe more frequent Inthe future.
