Welcome to our August magazine!

I am writing this after spending the day at the Stickney Show. It was a very successful event with everyone who attended saying that they had had a good day. If you were there thank you for coming and hope you were among those who enjoyed it. Tell other people and maybe they will come along next year! The weather was very kind to us, not too hot ,and it didn't rain ( a minor miracle).

If you have just moved into the village, a warm welcome to you. We hope you will soon settle in and find life among us enjoyable. You will find a lot of information in the magazine and there are lots of useful phone numbers on the back cover.

Bingo for BlissAt the end of June Ash Napier and Marcus Gibbons held a bingo in aid of Bliss, the newborn baby charity. The boys also ran a sweepstake to guess how far Marcus could ride in one hour, with the winner receiving half of the money raised from the sweepstake. They raised £361.00 in total, which contributed to their fundraising for the Prudential Ride London 100, a 100 mile cycling sportive around London and Surrey, which they will complete at the end of July. With a target of £500.00 each, the money raised from the bingo has really helped and now both Ash and Marcus have reached their goal.Ash and Marcus would like to thank everyone that donated prizes or helped out in any way. Just the 100 miles to complete now!

ST LUKE’S CHURCHOur heroes arrived again, on their bikes, in their lycra, ready for refreshment in the form of homemade cakes and gallons of tea.  This was the CYCLISTS seventh annual visit to Stickney Church.  24 of them came and we presented them with a cheque for £403.00 for Cancer Research UK, which was raised at the special bingo in June.  An additional £40.00 in donations was handed over.  Thank you to all contributors.

The day the cyclists came was also St. Luke's GIFT DAY.  To date over £1700.00 has been added to our Fabric Fund towards the Church's maintenance and improvement.  We say a big thank you for your generous giving.

Unfortunately DRY ROT has returned under the north side flooring, our architects came and confirmed this.  More ventilation under the floors is needed, but in the long term we may have to consider using solid material to replace all the timber floors.

Once again we invite you to call in at our GARDEN PARTY on SUNDAY 31 JULY. Come to the Rectory, Horbling Lane during the afternoon to enjoy tea/coffee and cake and chat with friends.

On MONDAY 29 AUGUST we will be having our SUMMER HOLIDAY BINGO in Stickney Youth Centre:  eyes down 7.30pm.  Yet again we appeal for prizes and hope you will come with friends to share in the fun of the evening.

Don't forget the PHOTOGRAPH COMPETITION;  entries to be with Rev Fran Jeffries by 10 SEPTEMBER 2016. The categories:  the local area; the local Church at work; it's a wonderful world; my pet and/or other animals; celebration and still life. Photographs will be displayed in a November exhibition and 12 winning entries will be used for our 2017 calendar.

September heralds the start of HARVEST celebrations:  St. Luke's HARVEST THANKSGIVING in church will be on SUNDAY 02 OCTOBER followed by the HARVEST SUPPER on MONDAY 03 October at 7.00pm in Stickney Village Hall. Please let us know a little beforehand if you are hoping to come to the sausage and mash supper,  afterwards we will have the usual auction of produce.

The end of July, through August and into September is a time of CHANGE for many young people.  Starting school, transferring from one school to another, or travelling to college or university, others are joining a workplace and gaining a real sense of independence and responsibility.

At the start of a new school year new staff settle into new classroom and administrative routines.  Through August parents have a break from daily escorting to school, mums hunt for new uniforms, and hopefully many families enjoy changes of scene on holiday or days out.

In our prayers we include the FAMILY SUMMER, asking that through rest, play and preparation times, younger and older will share happiness and lots of laughter.  We pray for guidance and strength to face the changes which will challenge us in the weeks to come.

William Lovell Church of England Academy Summer Concert 2016

Thursday 07 July saw pupils and staff from William Lovell Church of England Academy take to the stage to present “From Stickney to the Somme”. This very special summer concert was part of the Royal British Legion’s Somme 100 events programme to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.Scenes, stories and songs interspersed with footage told the story of WWI from Kitchener’s call to join up, through the Battle of the Somme to eventual victory in November 1918. We saw how war affected both the soldiers in the trenches

and families at home through the reading of real letters from the period and through the eyes of Violet, a (fictitious) young girl, whose dad was conscripted and lost his life on the first day of The Somme. The skilful blending of all these vividly brought home the sense of duty, comradeship, sacrifice and loss on both a local and national level. Rousing choruses, emotion filled acting and beautifully read poems all played their part in this excellent production. An appreciative audience were totally absorbed as each scene and song flowed seamlessly into the next part of the story telling. A poignant and fitting end to the evening was the cast reading a roll of honour of the Stickney men who died in WWI. It was a privilege to have Mr Fred Hunt as a special guest to lead The Exhortation followed by the Last Post. A very moving and memorable evening.A total of £357.13 was raised from ticket sales and donations for refreshments which will be donated to the Royal British Legion. During the evening a raffle was also held, which raised £217.80 towards a memorial at the school for Mrs Gill Clifton who sadly passed away recently. She worked at William Lovell as a Teaching Assistant for 25 years, helping with many productions, before retiring last year.

We have been advised by the local PSCO that complaints should be reported to the following number:  APCOA Parking 01522 512436 or email: [email protected] website is www.apcoa.co.uk - A high volume of complaints should result in swifter action to address this issue.

The Jubilee Committee would like to thank everyone who visited Stickney Show this year. Thankfully the weather held out to make this an enjoyable event for everyone. The committee, with new members, have been busy working to get the Show organised, with new ideas and attractions, and everything came together on the day. A lot of favourable comments have already been received regarding the Show, if you have any comments, or would like to be put on a list of ‘helpers’ for next year, please email [email protected] or let the committee know via Facebook. In the coming months there will further reports and perhaps some fund raising events for the 2017 Stickney Show. It is the money raised at these events that help to make the Show what is was on 16 July! The committee put a lot of work into everything they do and the support from residents in and around Stickney is much appreciated.

Gardening Tips for August & SeptemberThe same amount of space but double the number of months to plan for, so it's straight on to suggestions for the coming period in the garden vegetable plot.

Firstly August:1.  Harvest French beans, courgettes, radishes, carrots, mange tout and potatoes when they are small and tender.  By doing this you are guaranteeing yourself a better flavour of the vegetable than when they reach full size and you will be keeping ahead of the glut.

2.   A good tip I saw in one of the papers recently was to start a trough full of baby winter salad leaves.  This can be in any one of many shallow boxes one acquires over a period.  Fill with a good compost, which is peat free and moisture retentive, and you can sow all manner of winter maturing salad plants.

3.  When you lift your potatoes or young carrots, a good idea is to fill the gaps with spinach.  Easy to grow it's packed with folic acid and carotenoids, coincidentally, a recent crossword clue told me it is also a good source of Vitamin A.  Spinach young leaves can be cut early to add to mixed salad leaves as well as maturing to use in the usual way.

4.  Tomatoes still need our attention.  Take off the bottom leaves so that the young fruit can catch as much sunshine as is available in this almost 'sunfree' summer we are experiencing.  Pinch out the tops to encourage growth of the trusses.

5.  You can still sow early carrot varieties now and thin seedlings to 3ins apart in a soil based frame.  Grow as normal and close frame from mid- autumn for protection.  When they are ready in late autumn, stop watering and let the soil dry out to keep roots sound for winter use.

Then to September:1.  If you have grown Brussels Sprouts it is worth while remembering that they are top heavy and so vulnerable to wind damage.  Earth up stems and tread firm. Keep upright with individual stakes.  Avoid feeding with nitrogenous fertilizers and clear all dead or yellow foliage.  Cut and use leafy tops as greens when the sprouts are nearly ready to pick.

Page 16: More help and support - Lincolnshire County Councilparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../Parish_Magazine12345678…  · Web viewThis is a lively and friendly group which is looking for

2.  Clear exhausted crops and use any fibrous stems for the base of a new compost heap.

3.  i    Sow turnips for spring 'tops'.     ii   Gather in tomatoes to finish ripening.     iii  Fix grease bands to trap fruit trees.

iv  If necessary cut off and burn blighted potato crops.     v   Cut back chives, parsley and sage to encourage new growth and cloche for winter use.

As usual there will be more jobs to do than there is time available to do them in.

A 'did you know' to finish this month’s column:  Apparently the supposed connection between eating carrots and having good eyesight stems from Group Captain 'Cat's Eyes' Cunningham who attributed his success in spotting and shooting down German Bombers in World War II to eating carrots!  It probably had more to do with the development of radar.

Happy gardening.
