Assignment 1 PART 1 – AN ANALYSIS OF THE TEXTS ASSIGNED. a) Short Story (theme, moral value, plot, setting and character.) title : “The Moon In The Well.” 1. THEME : Think before you act : they didn’t think carefully before make a decision save the moon from the well. 2. MORAL VALUES : Kindness : the old monkey is very kind because he ask all monkey to help him save the moon. Co-operation : all of the monkey work together by holding their leg to save the moon out from the well. 3. PLOT : EXPOSITORY The little monkey is playing near the well. Then he climb on to the top of the well and looks in. He sees the moon inside the well. RISING ACTION Little monkey shocked because the moon has fallen into the well. He shouted and the old monkey came. The old monkey called all the monkeys. CLIMAX FALLING ACTION They tried to plan on how to take out the moon from the well. The monkey starts thinking very hard by looking at a large tree next to the well. They work together to take the moon out from the well by form a chain from a big tree. After the little monkey reaches the moon, the moon breaks up. RESOLUTION The old monkey realise that the moon in the well is only a reflection from the sky.

THEME :Wealthy is not everything : The father said the son should be like him, gathering money each day but the son proves it is wrong by showing his father that the poor people are richer than them. 2. MORAL VALUES :Dont look down to the other people : the father think that living as a poor people is hard because they dont have money. (page 19)Dont be proud of your own wealthy : the father like to talk about his money and wealth to others. (page 19).We should show a good example to our children in the future : the father is showing to his son that money is everything or else we have to live as a poor people.3. PLOT :

The father like to talk about his money and wealthy to others. He want his son to be like him, gathering money each day.EXPOSITORY

RISING ACTIONThe father brings his son to a far away village from town. He wants to show to his son, how poor people survive without money.

CLIMAXThey went back after the trip. The father asks his son what he had learnt from the trip. The son differentiates between poor and rich.

The father look confuse with his son view about poor people. But the father keep listening.

FALLING ACTION

The father becomes speechless with his son words. The son thank to his father for showing how poor they are.RESOLUTION

CHARACTER AND CHARACTERISTIC : The father :-boast : he keep talking about his money and wealth to the other people. (page 19)-wealthy : he wish his son will gather money and wealthy like him everyday. (page 19)-narrow minded : the father think that money is everything and poor people is dying without money. The son : -positive minded : the way he differentiate between poor and rich. (page 21-23)-smart : he can think better than his father about money is not everything.

b) an analysis of the poem.Poem : JojoLiterary element in the poem.a) Meaning of the poem : one little boy is imagining himself as a monster before he go to sleep.b) Tone of the poem : a big scary monster.c) Rhymes of the poem : a , b , a , c a , b , a , b a , b , c , bd) Vivid illustrations and Imagery : the combination between vivid illustrations and imagery element is to take note about the meaning or message from the poet. As we can the illustration of a boy holding something like an orange and a banana and the next picture showing that one big scary monster eating the sun. The poet actually makes it easy to the reader to understand the poem by providing these vivid illustrations.e) Hyperbole : The water of my mouth Will put out the fires if the sun;The waters of my mouth Will melt the light of the moon .f) Repetition :I am JoJo.Give me the...... The waters of my mouth will.......

the selection of the text that being used is simple and easy to understand the story. This story is suitable for young learner (primary year 1 and 2) since mention before that the text is simple and easy to understand. The students linguistic proficiency is only intermediate because the language aspect that is being used is very simple. The story is not too long and its suitable for standard 2.

PART 2: PORTFOLIO OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES a) synopsis of the short story and the summary of the poem.Synopsis :1. The Moon In The Well (micro-teaching).A little monkey was shocked to see the moon has fallen into the well. He shouted about the incident to the other monkey. They are very worried and then the old monkey decided to help the moon to get out of the well. They started to think on how to get the moon out. They decided to form a chain from a big tree he saw earlier. They climb the tree one by one and started hangs upside down holding on to the legs of the one below him. When the little monkey reaches out his hands to pick up the moon, it breaks up making him shocked. Then it appears back when the water calm. Then only the old monkey realise that the moon in the well is only a reflection from the sky.2. True Wealth.The father tells his son about their wealthy. His father likes to talk about his wealth and money to everyone but some of them didnt like to listen. He wants his son to be like him, gathering money and wealth every day. To him, money is everything and happiness. The father brings the son to a far away village from town. He wants to show to his son, how the poor people survive their life. They stay at the village for a few days and they are given a small hut to stay in. After a few days, they leave the village. The father asks his son what he had learned from the trip. The son differentiates between poor and rich people in a positive minded. The father look confuse with his son view about the poor people. But the father kept listening to his son. The father becomes speechless with his son words. His son said to him, thanks dad for showing me how poor we are.3. Jojo (poem).The boy is playing before he go to bed by imagine himself as a big scary monster. He wants to eat the sun and the moon. He wanted everyone to hear what he wants but it is just an imagination.

b) Explanation on literary elements of the short story and brief explanation of the literary aspect for the poems :we choose reading element for short story because we want to relate to our activity. We want the student understand the story clearly. To ensure the students understanding about the story, we will ask WH question based on the story that they have been read before.

Hyperbole is being used in this poem to create a desired drama effect. For example, in the Jojos poem:The water of my mouth Will put out the fires if the sun;The waters of my mouth Will melt the light of the moon.c) step by step activities for the short story.StagesTeachers/Students activity

Pre-reading1. Teacher shows a big book cover to the students. (The Moon In The Well)2. Teacher asks question about the cover.Example:-What can you see from the picture?- What is the title of the book?

3. Teacher shows a 3D picture of old monkey and little monkey.4. Teacher introduces the character of the story.

While-ReadingTASK 11. Teacher asks the students to sit on the floor.2. Teacher show the students a big book of The Moon In The Well3. Teacher reads aloud the story The Moon In The Well with the correct pronunciation, stress and action through the big book approach.4. After reading page 1-2, teacher pauses and asks some WH questions.

Example:-What does the little monkey see when he climbs onto the top of the well?-What is the reaction of the little monkey?

5. Teacher continues reading the story and asking question until the end of the story.

Post-Reading1. Students will be divided into 5 groups.2. Each group will receive 2 pictures of the character containing speech bubbles.

3. Teacher gives instruction and shows an example.4. Students are required to create their own dialogue on the speech bubbles based on their understanding of the story.5. Students a given 3 minutes to complete their dialogue.6. Each group will send 2 representatives in front of class to do the role play of each picture based on their speech bubbles.

d) explanation of how the poem can be read aloud. (presented in class) we used prop like the sun, moon, an orange and a banana. We used the tone of the monster. We act to situation in the video which are, one person become a boy and one more person need to be monster behind the boy as a imagination. This is to enhance students understanding when they read the poem.e) teaching materials relevant to the story. (big book, mask, puppet, audio visual aids etc).- pre/while stages: big book.
