2017 Moolah® Shrine PotentateDean Isbell

Cover design from 1944 Circus Ad Book

Dear Nobles,

What a whirlwind! Kim and I, on behalf of the Divan and their Ladies, want to thank all the Units, Clubs and Committees for the hospitality shown us at the Installations and Presentations we have attended so far. It is truly an honor and privilege to be your Potentate and to get to celebrate with you.

If you missed the Potentates Ball, you missed out on a great event. The imagination and creativity of our Nobles and Ladies never ceases to amaze me.

Our Circus is coming up quickly, so get your last-minute ads, sponsorships and booster sheets turned in and continue to sell tickets. Circus Chairman Kyle McEvoy and Circus Director Ron Reynolds, along with the entire Circus Committee have been working hard to make our 75th Annual Circus one for the ages. The Circus will be March 30 - April 2nd, but before we get there we will need to make our presence known at the Cottleville and Downtown STL parades, where we will distribute children's coupons and help get the word out.

The youth groups under Demolay Director Jeff Kitsmiller, Sr., President Jeff Kitsmiller, Jr., Bob Holscher and others did a great job distributing coupons around St. Charles and O'fallon. They will also be out en-force at the Circus helping with a variety of tasks. Thank you to all involved.

Wayne Price promises we will have a fantastic Circus Parade on March 25th. I understand that we will have two High School Bands joining us along with Moolah's many Units and some sponsors. After the Parade we will return to Moolah where Don Taylor has a phenomenal Circus Kick-off ready to go. Come on out and bring your family, friends, neigh-bors etc. It promises to be a great day!

In April we get to catch our breath and spend some family time celebrating the Easter season.

Tickets for our Sportsmen's Gun Raffle are available and on sale. This fundraiser is an easy sale and will go toward building a gazebo on the lawn outside of the Oasis Room. Drawing for this Raffle will be July 29th. We will also be looking for volunteers to sell tickets at Bass Pro on weekends starting in April.

Our Spring Ceremonial will be in honor of Illustrious Sir, Jim Brandenburg. We will begin at 10:00 with registration, fol-lowing the Ceremonial we will fez the new Nobles at the Hospital followed by a tour. While the Ceremonial is going on the Ladies are invited to join the Ladies Luncheon at Quintessential on Main St., St. Charles. That evening we will return to Moolah around 4:30 to celebrate with our new Nobles at a Seis de Derby party, where we'll mash Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo party themes together and see what comes out. Wear your favorite floppy hat, be it Kentucky Derby or Sombrero. It should be interesting.

On May 13th, First Lady Kim's fundraiser, Macho Mania, will be held. Get your tickets early, this is guaranteed to be a fun evening. If you'd like to help with this event please come to the next planning meeting on March 9th, 6:00 in the Oasis.

Mother’s Day will be Sunday, May 14th and we will have a great Brunch ready for you, your family, friends and neigh-bors. Avoid the restaurant lines and come enjoy one the finest brunches in town.

As you can see there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and have some fun and make some friends and memories. So, come on out and be a part of it!

Fraternally,

Illustrious Sir Dean Isbell

Through the eyes of a childBy: Casey Thompson

I have been a Shriner for almost 5 years now and the experience has been a lot of fun, but also tremendously humbling. As I become more active within the philanthropy, I begin to think about what it would be like to be a patient in the hospital or how the parents feel when they are taking their youngest child across country for regular and ongoing treatments. One of my greatest joys of being a Shriner is riding on the hospital van with the Guides unit. What strikes me the most is the kid’s excitement, almost as if they’re joyfully going on an adventure. During my weekend ride-alongs on the hospital van we pick up patients and their par-ents at the airport. These families oftentimes travel from anywhere in the country like New Orleans and San Antonio, just to name a few. At times I can see hints of exhaustion on the parents’ faces, but the kids more often than not are wide eyed and excited for the next leg of the adventure. Sometimes I catch myself thinking about what it must be like to be child with a visible disability. Most of the patients I meet on the van and the patient ambassadors demonstrate such love, joy, peacefulness, kindness, goodness and faithfulness towards the Shriner’s hospital and their cause. With gratitude, the patients and their families thank the Shriner’s for providing them with the opportunity to do the little things like playing sports and brushing their own hair.

What do you think our communities would look like if we acted more like some of our patients? What if we were filled with joy and gratitude for the little things in life? What if we were less worried about the glaring issues that we cannot change? What if we loved like our patients or even adopted a peaceful perspec-tive like the children we serve?

The Bible says in Galatians chapter 5 verse 22:“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, pa-tience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”

If you struggle with viewing life through the eyes of a child, in prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.

2017 Shrine Circus UpdateKyle McEvoy – Circus ChairmanRon Reynolds –Circus Director (314-732-2121)

The 75th Annual Moolah Shrine Circus is fast approaching. We hope everyone is excited and doing everything possible to make this the greatest circus yet. We again have an opportunity to exceed our goals and help Moolah’s budget, but it takes all of our help.

Although the deadline for ads has passed, we still need ticket sales. We need to have people in the seats to enjoy our circus. We also need all the help we can get for Novelties, Floor Operations, etc.

Remember, the sooner you turn in your ticket and ad money, the sooner you can be wearing your 2017 Circus jacket, shirt and hat. Let your circus chairman know.

The Circus Committee is doing a great job at getting ready to present another great circus this year. They deserve a big Thank You.

If you have comments or can help, please let me know. 314-732-2121 or [email protected].

Our goal is to continue to make our circus the best ever, and to keep the seats full.

Membership CornerNobles, I wanted to introduce you to your Membership Team for 2017! This year's team is being led by Co-Chairs, DJ Herman and Matt Niedringhaus. Team members include each Noble in our Temple.

In addition, we have a team of strong and dedicated members which include Dave Fitzgerald, Matt Robinson, Chuck Stratton and a very supportive Divan team.

We have had meetings in January and February, and will plan to continue them monthly. I plan to work with Monica in getting out dates for upcoming meetings.

Membership needs the support of each Unit/Committee in our quest to grow and maintain Moolah's membership. Our meetings are open to all Nobles, and we encourage you to attend even if it's to just listen and offer thoughts about events. If inspired, we do need help filling some important roles of Vice Chairman of Retention and Vice Chairman of Retention and Mentoring to name a few.

Lastly, some numbers. In 2016, we obtained Silver status due to the hard work led by Shaun Reuther, DJ Herman and Dave Fitzgerald. We began 2016 with 2,621 Nobles. We are beginning 2017 with 2,331 Nobles and are working diligently to restore some of the suspended and grow our fraternity.

If you would like to contribute, or share idea's please do not hesitate to call or email any of us on Member-ship or attend our meetings.

Fraternally,Matt Niedringhaus, [email protected]

Hail to the Chief! We pray for the success for our new Illustrious Potentate Nobel Dean Isbell in His life and during his tenure as our leader. He looks like a good guy. We danced, ate deliciously and drank our share, and quite possibly another’s, at his splendiferous Pre-sentation Ball this past February 18th and are now ready to get down to the excitement of preparing for the 75th annual Moolah Shrine Circus.

Eight great shows starting March 30 until the final show on April 2nd. Eight great chances for you to sell tickets and novelties.

The excitement begins with Circus Parade and Kickoff March 25th and blasts in with the Shriners Hospital Telethon on March 30th on station KMOV.

All will be prepared and ready for the throngs of little children, and the big ones too, expected to attend this year’s Shrine Circus event. They’re poised and raring to enjoy and to enhance their experience with purchases of many choices of novelties, which, by the way, we Chanters hope to sell in massive quantities. The floats are ready for the Circus Parade and Kickoff commencing March 25th. If rain cometh, “ducketh”! The Parade must go on!! We will be singing our National Anthem at some of the eight Grand Entries. Listen for us!

Sell them tickets...Fill them seats! Let’s all get behind the effort that makes Moolah proud and profitable.

So until the end of the month, be of good cheer. SEE YOU AT THE CIRCUS! And don’t forget to attend the Circus Kickoff. There’ll be food a’plenty.

Bring a prospective Shriner. You’ll make a friend for life.

Be proud and make all envious of your standing in one of the greatest organizations in the world. Be proud to be a Shriner.

That’s all for now...until April! God bless.

Hello, from your Moolah Band:

Happy New Year and a heartfelt thanks to all who helped make our December performances so successful. We are now entering the time when the Band begins finding new music for our 2017 concerts My thanks to Mike Fries, CommunityBand member, for helping me with checking our folders to be sure each contains all the parts for rehearsals and performances.

Now is the time for any Noble who has played before to join us as we prepare for our Centennial Year in 2019. We need your help, so consider visiting with us and do the things you used to love, and help spread the message of Shriners Hospitals. Come see us on Wednesday nights at 7:30 and rekindle the fun you had when you were in the school band. If you need any infor-mation, please give me a call or e-mail and I will answer any questions you may have.

Also, remember we are a community band, so if your child or grandchild plays an instrument, he or she is welcome to play in the Band. We meet Wednesday evenings at 7:30 to practice. Our concerts are mainly Wednesday nights at 7:00, and on some Tuesdays.

We would love to have you participate with us.

We always leave ‘em smiling!

Well, as everyone knows these articles have to be written a month earlier than when they come out. So in the last article I praised everyone for their work at the Trivia nite which didn't happen. I took a little heat on this but I have the confidence in everything I said about our nite and all our volunteers will be correct. So by the time you get this one we will still be a couple of weeks away from the event and hopefully it won't snow. But I thank you for all your work up to this point. How's that for being careful.

Skit practice is going well. I want to thank Howee (Mike Howard) for getting all the outfits and props for our two skits. I must thank God for Poppy (Larry Clark) for constructing our corral. It came out really good and should easily make it through all the performances. Thanks guys.

I believe everyone who attended the Potentate's Ball had a great time. Also the Clown and Air Pa-trols Presentation was a lot of fun, great food and awsome band. Thanks to Mike Stevens (Mibo) and his Lady Edna for a great night plus the adult Christmas party.

Our own Merlin (Tom Dolan) was in Ottawa, Canada when the St. Louis Blues equipment manager was injured during the morning skate. Merlin took over for him in the game that night and if you were watching he was giving out sticks and towels during the entire game.

Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water.

UNIT & COMMITTEE REPORTS

Director: Rick Gwydir 314-504-1091Drum Major: Dave Glenn 314-560-4431By Jim Hubeli The Drum Corps has been hard at work practic-ing for the St. Patricks Day parade in Cottleville on March 11 and the Circus parade in St. Charles on March 25. The Cottleville parade draws huge crowds from the surrounding areas to celebrate the Legend of St. Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. The crowds are all decked out in green and are very loud and active. We plan to play our Irish melodies which include McNamara's Band, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling and My Wild Irish Rose. St. Patrick was also known as the Patron Saint of Engineers since he introduced the use of arches in building.

This has been a busy sports weekend with Kurt Warner being elected to the Football Hall of Fame on Sat. Feb. 4. Of course we all know he was the quarterback for the St. Louis Rams when we had good teams and they won Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999. During 1999, 2000 and 2001 they were known as " The Greatest Show on Turf ". Then, some of us watched the Phoenix Open Golf Tour-nament where Hideki Matsuyama won against Webb Simpson on the 4th extra hole on Sunday. Then, we saw the New England Patriots win over the Atlanta Falcons at the last minute in overtime in Super Bowl LI.

President: Frank (Pancho) Windler P.P. 314-974-5000Captain: Allen Coggins 314-602-7454Treasurer: Dave Wren 314-307-5122 It has been a while since our last report. What a busy time it has been out at the Ranch!!

Come out to our beautiful facility in Robertsville and see what we’re all about!! You don’t need to own a horse to become a member, just an interest in horses or equine activities is all that is need-ed. Our unit owns several horses and there are ALWAYS horse(s) available for parades, practices or any other fun plans or events. You don’t need a big truck and horse trailer to be a part of this wonderful group.

We have an amazing facility with an enclosed riding arena and holding pens for our critters. Several family evenings take place thru the year with great food and drinks, and live entertainment. One of our members is working on his chicken wing masters certificate and we need new sam-plers and tasters to see if he has achieved pure craftsmanship in his endeavours. Please help!!

Our gourmet dinners have achieved legendary sta-tus. Our prez started these a few years ago and they have proven to be a huge evening for all who have attended. Celebrity chefs from the Cardinals and other local culinary geniuses have partaken in the festivities and a truly wonderful evening has been enjoyed by all who have attended. Horse-back rides are complimentary and encouraged, there is always a camera handy to save your moments for everyone to enjoy. Forever…..

We have several positions for anyone wanting to get involved. P.P. Dave Dieckhaus is our new Tack Master and a HUGE tip of the fez goes to him. The Sanitation Team is in a state of flux, leadership is needed. Are you that individual? Lifted golf cart and wagon are perks of the position, along with a new shovel (aluminum) and broom to go along. Applications are reviewed by a team consisting of teenage kids and sanitation professionals to ensure quality applicants.

Get hold of any of our fearless leaders or any member of the Lancers regarding membership. Many parades on the horizon, several Ranch events coming up soon as well. Regular meetings resume at the Ranch soon, in the meantime we meet on the same evenings as the stated meetings in our unit room. Please stop by!!!!!

We will be continue to plan for the Festival of the Little Hills “gate guarding” crews. This is an important event for our unit, so please plan to attend to give your input as to which 2 hour shift you will stand. DIRECTOR: Bill BradfordPRESIDENT: Mike Heuer1ST. V.PRES: Jerry D’Agostino2ND V. PRES: Randy BaerSECRETARY: Jim GesellTREASURER: Bob Berry Newly elected President Mike Heuer conducted our January meeting just as if he had been doing so for many years. Hospital Committee has been fortunate in having talented and dedicated presidents for many years. Just maybe that is the reason of this unit being so active and thriv-ing. Nobles at our January committee meeting approved a budget which included conducting 12 meal events at the hospital this year, including 8 BBQ lunches, 3 pancake breakfasts and 1 ice cream social. Dates have been discussed with the Hospital staff and Committee officers. The first 2017 Hospital events will be Tuesday, Febru-ary 14, a pancake breakfast with a Valentines day theme. On Thursday, March 30, the first BBQ with a circus theme. The Committee is preparing for the 2017 Moolah Shrine Circus, selling tickets and soliciting adver-tising and donations for the circus. President Mike shared information on the May 13th Macho Mania fund raiser of Moolah Temple. The Committee decided to contribute gift baskets to be sold at the silent auction. Hospital tours continue to be a Committee prior-ity, one was held on January 21st for the Ozark Shrine Club. Volunteers are needed for Shriner positions at the Hospital. Responsibilities are to maintain our warm, friendly and caring demeanor by: Greeting all guest and directing them to the Fast Pass Station. Staffing the desk in the vestibule. Selling merchandise from the display case store. Giving toys to the kids leaving the Hospital upon treatment. Another reception desk volunteer staffs the Fast Pass station issuing security badges.

Anyone interested to help, please contact our Vol-unteer Coordinator, Bill Bradford at 314-974-3084. Look forward for any Noble as a visitor or want a be member at our monthly meeting, the third Wednesday at 6:15 in our Moolah room.

There still seems to be confusion on what the purpose of the Nomads actually is, let's clear that up! The Moolah Nomads are an initial home (club, unit, committee) for brand new Shriners to become adapted to the ways of Moolah Shriners. Our goal is to ensure that newly fezed Shriners don't get lost and we can guide them to other areas of interest throughout our fraternity.

If you are new (or even new “ish”) to Moolah, it is highly encouraged that you attend our monthly meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Everyone is welcome! Dinner at 6:30, meeting at 7, and RSVP is not necessary. We may even give you a shirt. Our aim is to be helpful, informative, but mostly to have fun. If you have any questions at all, call or text any of the Exec Board members. ALSO, the Nomads room is open before Stated Meetings. Come by and say hello. President Casey may even buy you a drink at our bar (some restrictions apply). If you are on Facebook, connect with Moolah Nomads.

If you are more established in the ways of Moolah, we still want you to attend! At the very least, stop by the Nomads room on Stated Meet-ing nights and introduce yourselves to the new members. Talk to them about your unit, club, or committee. I realize that we all get into our com-fort zones with our own groups, but be a Nomad for a bit and roam on over.

NOMADS! The circus is upon us and we have been requested to help with the distribution of the lemonade and popcorn at each performance. We would like to have at least 3-4 people at each performance. We will have a sign up sheet soon. Your Lady is also encouraged to participate. There are MANY other ways to help at the circus too. It is Moolah's biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need everyone's help. Call or text DJ to find out how you can help.

Nomads annual dues are $20 and we can really use your financial support. If you are a new Shri-ner your first years dues are free*. Yearly dues are imperative to this groups survival.

Special thanks to Justin Doherty for taking on the role of Bar Chairman.

Support the circus!

A special thank you to our President, Bruce Marren, Ron Grant, John Spraul and all of Reception Committee for making our Valentine's Day Brunch/Officer Installation a success. We had a full house with attendance of 45 people. The Ladies each received a flower and chocolate and everyone enjoyed the delicious fruits that we dipped in the chocolate fountain.

Please remember to mark your calendars for next month's First Friday Dinner, on Friday, March 3rd.Our First Fridays are open to all of Moolah, and we welcome you to come and enjoy a great evening. Meals are $10/person and both Ladies and children are welcome.

Circus kickoff is fast approaching on Saturday, March 25th! After the parade, Reception will have a booth as well as be selling items from the Gift Shop. Any members that can help with working the gift shop table, please get with Bruce or I. Reception will also be having their Novelty booth at the Circus. Please get with John Spraul to get signed up to help work an evening or two. Keep in mind that dues are due for both Recep-tion Committee and the Shrine.

One last reminder about Moolah stated meetings: Per the Potentate, you must have your dues card with you to gain admittance into the Temple. Re-ception Committee Members will continue to tile the doors and ask for your card and passwords. Even if you are not attending the meeting, and just attending dinner, a paid Moolah Membership card is needed to enter the Temple.

March is Circus month and the Unique Motor Unit is definitely preparing for our participation in the circus parade in addition to the circus itself. We are looking forward to this event because it is always rewarding and lots of fun.

We continue to work on planning our annual barbecue at Jefferson Barracks. This is an event that is hard work for us, but one that we love doing because it is so obviously appreciated by the patients and staff. It’s great to have personal interaction with some of our veterans! This is just a small way in which we can express our thanks.

If anybody has an unusual vehicle or you are just interested in our unit, we would welcome you at one of our unit meetings. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. If you prefer, feel free to call one of our officers to find out more about what we do.

Admission is only $10 per person. If you like to dance or just want to go out someplace relaxing and listen to good music with friends, this is the night for you. Doors open at 6:30 pm

I want to continue the challenge to ALL the units to patronize our dances. Take one dance and bring as many of your members as you can, along with their Ladies and let’s see which unit made the top of the list by December.

Please note, if you’re a small group looking for a place to hold a birthday party, want music, a bar, and a reserved area to hold it, let us know. You’re welcome to have your party at one of our regular dances. If you bring at least 20 folks, we’ll buy the birthday cake for your party!!! Reg-ular admission fees apply. Just give us advance notice in order to obtain the cake.

We dance Fridays each month in the Oasis Room. Doors open at 6:30 pm with music and free lessons starting at 7:00 pm. Our Dances are open to the public with pizza by the slice and a cash bar. Noble Lodge meetings in March are Tuesdays March 7 and 21. We have a light dinner at 6 PM and the meeting opens at 7PM. All nobles are invited to attend.

Noble Lodge is co- hosting a C2A class with Tuscan Lodge #360 on Saturday, April 8th. We will be using Tuscan’s spectacular lodge hall, a great setting for doing the Fellowcraft and Master Mason degrees! Get your petitions for your candidates in so they can be included!

Noble Lodge will honor our member, Illustrious Sir Dean Isbell with “A Night In the East” on Tuesday, April 18th. MWB Richard L. Smith will be there to add to the festivities and present 25 year pins to our members who have achieved the distinction. And, it will be a “Past Masters” night, with Noble Lodge past masters filling the chairs. Come enjoy the fun!

If you know someone who might be interested in becoming a Mason, you can be the 1st line sign-er of your candidate’s petition. Only 1 signer of a Masonic petition needs to be from Noble Lodge,

March is our “Pot of Gold” at the end of winter. Hopefully it will treat us kindly this year.

We have ample opportunity for celebration in March. Our first opportunity is March 8th which is “Women’s Day”. This is the day to treat yourself, be good to yourself as you are special to so many others.

Of course we have many opportunities for fun, good food and socializing. Enjoy dinner out and a fun evening of Bunco with friends at the Stated Meeting on March 15. On March 18 you can show off your knowledge and bid on exciting auction items at the Clown Trivia night. This event benefits the Red Sneaker Fund (Shriner Burn Hospitals). Join us on March 22nd for our Temple Club Luncheon/Meeting. This is always a fun time, so bring a friend.

The big March event is the 75th Moolah Shrine Circus. Pre-Circus activities start off with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cottleville on March 11th. Our own Shriner Circus Parade and Circus kick-off is March 25th. After you have viewed the parade in St. Charles, stop in at Moolah to enjoy the food, fun and festivities of the Circus Kick-Off. This promises to be a fun filled day, don’t miss it.

The 75th Moolah Shrine Circus starts on March 30th and runs through April 2nd. To be a success our Circus needs all of us to volunteer. There are many ways to help, one of them is to sign up for the Temple Club Lemonade and Popcorn stand. Many hands make light work, plus it will be lots of fun. See you at the Circus.

Yvonnia Woeger, Queen 314-560-3864Recorder PQ Mary LaTragna 314- 566-4727 We want to extend an invitation to all ladies, 18 and older, to join our wonderful group for a sisterhood of philanthropy, good friends, and good times. We would love to have you join us!. We welcome your ideas, energy, and willingness to help support our temple. As always, all our funds go to support Shriners Hospitals for children.

We are creating our outreach programs to help our Masonic family know who we are and what we do. We want everybody to know we are a network of 137 temples, 126 in the U.S. and 11 in Canada. Our membership exceeds 25,000! We have donated over 3.1 million dollars to help with patient care at Shriners Hospital for Children in 2015, and 55 million dollars total since our inception in 1913. Read about us at our newly enhanced website: donfdn.org.

In February, we supplied food for the hospital's parent lounge and worked the Junior Achieve-ment fair assisting in monitoring the students and assisting where ever needed. This is great fun watching the kids and listening to presentations!

We had our QUARTER AUCTION ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 2017 and it was a huge success! A big Thank you to all who were vendors, donors, workers, participants, and Gale Bennington for all his help on this project! All net proceeds will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children. On page 21 are some photos! We are developing a Facebook page and it will be up and running soon. Look for us!

We are looking forward to working at the Shrine Circus this year! We already have volunteers and are looking forward to another great time selling lemonade and Kettle corn.

We have so many wonderful ladies that work hard to insure that we support the Shrine Hospital to the best of our ability, and who are dedicated to helping our Shriners when asked. If you have any questions or would like more information about our organization, please contact Queen Yvonnia at 636-295-2290 or PQ Mary LaTragna at 314-566-4727.

the other signer can be from any Lodge. Keep this in mind if you have a candidate. It all starts with you submitting the petition for your candi-date. The petition (and $75 initiation fee) will be received at our next meeting, and your candidate will be notified of the next steps.

Noble Lodge now has a book rack outside the Lodge Room. It has various books and pub-lications about Masonry. Feel free to borrow any thing you’d like to read, or if you have some books you’d like donate, please do so.

is honored to once again be helping the Nobles of Moolah by selling tickets, participating in the parade to get the word out, manning a booth at the circus kickoff, and working a novelty booth again this year. This is a wonderful example of how many hands make light work, even across the bounds of fraternal orders. Come join us on April 9th at 2pm in the Oasis Room at Moolah for our Installation of officers for the 2017-2018 year. Following the installa-tion there will be a reception with a light meal so please stay and mingle and celebrate this occasion with us. Speaking of occasions… February was Nailah Court’s 6th birthday! WOW! Talk about time passing quickly! Some amazing friendships have been made both among our sisters here in Nailah Court and with many of the Nobles and their Ladies at Moolah Temple. Mark your calendars for June 3rd and Nailah Court’s Spring Fling! There will be a fashion show, vendors of all types, and lots of activities. Speak with Lady Marcia Jacobi for more informa-tion.
