Since the 1980s the price of university education in America has risen by 440%... For the economy as a whole, the average price and wage increases were only 110% and 150%
respectively.

Resolve Baumol's Cost Disease?
Baumol, W. J, (2012) The Cost Disease: Why Computers get Cheaper and Healthcare Doesn't
"The cost to innovate is almost zero...the cost of failure is almost
zero."...
Joi Ito (2012). Keynote to Open Educational Resources meeting (video), Hewlett Foundation.
EdXPrinceton, Udacity, MIT, Gates Foundation, Coursera...We’ve always
had MOOCs – they are called libraries...
Challenges – Provider:
• Education quality standards?
• IP ownership?
• Who “owns” the learning experience?
• Proctored assessments by a 3rd party – valid?
• ...
Challenges - Learner:
• ...The outcome is a grade not an education...
• ...MOOCs right now are nothing more than the lectures I used to sit through in college many years ago..
• Is traditional education what I need? Don't I just need research & critical thinking skills in a digital world?
• ...
...it showed me something fascinating, which is that extent to which the MOOC provides a focal point to enable people to share, engage
and benefit from the experience. What is more, the MOOC'ers threads and opinion-sharing is captured in the interface so that others can review over time and form their own opinions (and there were a lot of lively
discussions!) ...
Maybe learners can teach themselves?
- Sugata Mitra
Now our “libraries “ are digital and almost limitless...

Questions to Discuss
• One of the challenges the working group has raised is what part
does L&D get to play in MOOCs for Learning. The answer may turn
out to be very different to what we do now.
• Currently MOOCs are predominantly available for certain topics ie
IT, Management, Science which only meet part of organisational
needs.

• How will employees find courses - Search engines.
• What if the MOOC is discontinued - Find another one or go back to the usual way you plugged gap in the current state.
• We cant get into our reporting - Maybe . Is it that more important than learning.
