Happy New Year! I don’t know about you, but I always have such high goals and plans for the new year. I think, this

is the year that I'll do things differently - I'll eat better, I'll clean my house on a more regular basis, I'll keep on top of

the laundry pile, I'll be more intentional with my relationships with others, I won't commit to as many things, and the

list goes on… And then January 15th hits and I realize I haven't started on any of my goals - or, I've tried and failed.

That laundry pile has turned into a mountain! By the time November comes I look forward to the new year so I can

outline all the things I'll do better next year, and the cycle continues.

Can you relate?

A fresh new start always gives me hope for change, and it encourages me to do, and be better. But having a fresh new

start just once a year is not nearly enough. Thankfully, God in his infinite mercy has provided us opportunities for

many fresh starts! Every time we confess our sins and are forgiven; every time we receive the Lord's Supper; every

morning, we have a new start. As the author or Lamentations put it so eloquently,

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Every morning is a new day, a new start. His compassions never fail, and every day we are washed clean in our

baptismal grace. Thanks be to Jesus that in the midst of all of our shortcomings and failures, He forgives our sins and

cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

So yes, Happy New Year! But also, because of Jesus, Happy New Day!

this website. CPYU's (Center for Parent/Youth Understanding) focus is this: Helping parents, youth works, educators,

pastors, and others understand and reach today's youth culture. This website has information on most topics that our

teens deal with today. They provide ideas on how to talk to your teens, resources with more information, scriptural

support, and more. CPYU puts out a monthly newsletter that I share with parents via email, it is an excellent resource.

Hard copies are also available on the youth board.

watching.” On the other end of the table was a

pile of cookies on which a second grader had

placed a sign saying, “Take all the cookies you

want—God is watching the apples.”

Mission U

Saturday, Feb 25th

“Dealing with Tough Questions” This Mission U workshop is designed to help us live out and share our faith in Jesus with others. God wants us to talk about Him. He wants us to tell the people around us, in our own words about the beautiful things He has done in our lives. This year the Mission U workshop will address common questions and objections to Christianity and show us how to give sensitive and relevant answers that point to the Savior. Cost is $10 if you pre-register ($15 on the day of the event) Sign up on the Ministry Action Board.

“Afternoon at the Movies”

Cold Sunday afternoons in the winter are a great time

to snuggle up in front of the tv with a bowl of

popcorn and a great movie. That is what we will be

doing on:

Sunday, January 22nd at 2:00 PM in the

College Room. “Joni”

This movie tells the early part of the life story of Joni

Erickson Tada. How God saved her during a tragic

diving accident and has used her disability of being a

quadriplegic to minister to many individuals and

families.

“Traveling Light” On Wednesday January 11th, we will begin a new Bible study in the Fellowship Center from 6-7:00pm. The study is called Traveling Light and it is a study of Psalm 23. The study takes a look at our journey through life. The burdens that we carry that we were never meant to carry. Sign up on the Ministry Action Board and plan to join us.

MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT

We are all born with a heart condition- a place within our heart in which Christ fits perfectly.

Unfortunately, as sinful people, we try to fill that perfect fit with things of this world in an effort to

satisfy an inward longing. A longing for Christ. Some deny that longing and use alternatives to fix their

heart condition which only leads to disappointment.

As I listen in the Romans 12 Christian Bible study on Sunday morning, I hear repeatedly how we are

sinful, unable to secure eternal life, broken, and lost. We repeat history….the Israelites sound so foolish

when they tell Moses that slavery was much better, now we will die in the desert! (Exodus 14:12). But

then Moses tells the Israelites do not be afraid, stand firm- the Lord will fight for you; you need only to

be still (Exodus 14: 13-14).

Is slavery in 2017 any better? We slave away in sin- if it feels good, do it. If it feels right, do it. If it’s

good for me, do it. We continually deny our heart condition that longs for Christ. What would happen if

we “give in” to that longing by being active in Bible study, enjoy fellowship with other Christians,

worship, or carve out quiet time each day for prayer and devotions? What

if we stand firm in faith and be still as the Lord fights for His people? What

if we strive to support those in need and share the gospel with everyone

we meet?

This is the time of year when moods might darken, sadness might ensue,

and hopelessness might overwhelm. Happiness depends on

circumstances, joy depends on Christ. In John 15:11 Jesus tells us “I have told you this so that my joy

may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Paul overflowed with joy. What was the source of

this joy? “There is a close connection between Christian joy and the attitudes of our minds. Because Paul

possessed the single mind of wholeheartedly serving the Lord, he viewed the circumstances of life as

working for him and not against him, and therefore, he could rejoice in the Lord no matter how great

the difficulties he faced. We will not experience the joy of the Lord when we are trying to live for Christ

and pursuing our own self-fulfillment at the same time” (Nell, 2009).

Now am I saying if we focus on Christ instead of ourselves we will never experience sadness or

depression? Of course not. Depression is a real condition, a medical condition that can be treated in

multiple ways. Talking with a Christian friend, seeing a counselor, exercise (to release natural

endorphins to elevate mood), appropriate sleep, and sometimes medication might be helpful (plus

other remedies). For some, depression is related to a particular period in life and for others, this might

be a lifetime battle. What I do know is being purposeful in our

walk with Christ is instrumental in healing our heart condition

and, at the same time, focuses our mind and eventually leads

to eternal joy. That eternal joy is with Christ.

Quilting starts on January 4th at 1:00 PM

in the Dining Hall. We have many quilts to

tie. Please come and help us tie and enjoy

wonderful fellowship.

On Dec 8th we brought 25 Christmas quilts

to the VA Hospital and on Dec 12th we

brought 8 quilts to a Habitat family for

them in their new home. Our quilts are

needed in many places and bring a smile to

many faces.

Thank You to everyone who donated items

or worked at our craft and bake sale at the

Moorhead Center Mall in November. It

was a huge success. We made $1400 in our

sales and $225 in our coffee and treats.

It is a new year and most people will make New Year resolutions to change areas of their life. In the center, we

are always discovering the “new;” which is one of the great reasons to work in the childcare field with children!

Children are forever exploring and having fun through play. We love encouraging our students to always

explore their environment and watching them learn and grow through their environment. What is new in our

center you may ask?!? We finally have one wall moved and are hoping that another wall will be moved in the

upcoming weeks. Then it is on to installing our security system. We are anxiously awaiting to have everything in

place for our secure wing. We have many new teachers on staff which is a blessing because for so long we have

been short staffed. We also have many new families who have joined our center which is always exciting to get

to know the new children and watch them develop and grow. Please keep us in your prayers as we have

another visit from NAEYC coming up by March 30, 2017. We also have several other projects in the works and

we need clarity in which direction these projects should go. Wish List: There are still several items on our wish

list that we are looking for. Please prayerfully consider what you can do to help the center. Can you help with a

monetary gift, can you help with a donation or can you help with prayer? All help is greatly appreciated.

We have so much to be thankful for! The roof has held together with only minor repairs needed to date. The elevator is working after minor repairs. The air conditioning units and boilers were able to be fixed, resulting in happy staff and more comfortable worship services. Our congregation has risen time and again to support missions and special projects. God’s miracles are around us everywhere! Unfortunately, attendance has been down this fall and so have contributions. Expenses remain fixed even when attendance drops which has resulted in a deficit of over $16,000 at the end of November. At the time of this writing, there is only Christmas Sunday remaining and many bills left to be paid. May the Lord continue to shine his blessings upon our work so that His glories may be revealed! Area churches and emergency shelters will again collaborate to provide overflow sheltering for people who are homeless beginning Sunday, November 6th. Training is required for anyone who plans to help provide temporary sheltering in a church site. Please attend one of the training sessions to make this an effective sheltering project. Refer to the list below to find a training date that fits your schedule.

Training Location: All training is held at First United Methodist Church at 906 1st

Avenue South in Fargo, North Dakota. Use the entrance adjacent to the parking lot on the west side of the building.

Training Agenda:

•Establishing relationships and communicating effectively with guests

•How volunteers run a host site at the church

•Distribution of a Volunteer Training Manual for reference

Just in Time Training : To discuss the feasibility of doing training at your church call Laurie Baker at (701) 200-0855 .

Refresher Orientation: Previously trained volunteers can watch the 12 minute video posted at FM Coalition for Homeless Persons website.

Why I Give Through the Church

Because I know that everything I have comes from God, and, by giving generously of my income to Him through the church, I acknowledge His ownership and my opportunity to be a faithful steward.

Because the church is the best place I know through which my money can most profitably be used to extend God’s kingdom.

Because when I joined the church, I promised to support it, and I want to make that promise good.

Because making a pledge and fulfilling it regularly remind me constantly that I have a definite and important share in the ministry of Christ.

Because the preaching and teaching ministry along with the compassion ministries and missionary programs of the church have no source of support other than the gifts of church members.

Because it is in the church when I can each week hear God’s Word preached and taught and receive His body and blood at the Lord’s Table.

Because it is in the church where I was baptized, confirmed, married, and will someday have my funeral service.

Because it is in the church where I’m blessed to have fellowship with fellow believers.

Because it is in the church where I have the opportunity to use my time and abilities to serve the Lord.

Because giving my offering generously and cheerfully to the church keeps me from growing selfish and indifferent.

Because I am not willing to accept the blessings of the church without contributing to its work.
