QUICK TAKE
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Equity market valuations are broadly reasonable adjusted for the cyclical low in earnings and potential for revival going forward.
We remain bullish on equities from a medium to long term perspective
Investors are suggested to have their asset allocation plan based on one’s risk appetite and future goals in life.
DOMESTIC
CORPORATE
Global geo politics, and a global risk off trade continued to weigh on markets during the month. The S&P BSE Sensex and NIFTY 50 remained flat for the 2nd month in a row. NIFTY Midcap 100 and NIFTY Smallcap 100 indices continued to underperform large caps significantly falling 3.8% and 8.3% respectively. FPIs continued to remain net sellers this month. With this total outflow from equity and debt markets for the calendar year stand as at Rs 48,000 Cr.
Crude prices continue to remain elevated. The Indian crude basket for the month stood at US$76.4/barrel. US sanctions on Iran, one of India`s primary oil suppliers, is likely to further complicate matters further. USD-INR depreciated to an all-time low of Rs 69/US$ in June 2018.
CPI inflation inched up to 4.87% in May V/s 4.58% in April. Core inflation inched up marginally to 5.73% as well. The risks to the inflation outlook would be a further sharp rise in oil prices and the impact of potential minimum support price hikes for the kharif (summer) crop. However, these risks could be mitigated by still moderate rural and urban wage growth and the currently low (though increasing) levels of capacity utilization.
The central government’s fiscal deficit in Apr-May reached 55% of the budgeted target. This is better than the 63% reached in Apr-May of last year. To recall, from last year, the budget announcement has been advanced by 1 month leading to early spending and the first two months’ expenditure increasing from ~15% of budgeted to ~20%. June GST collection numbers stood at a healthy Rs. 95,610 Cr.
During the month US renewed trade war fears by imposing multiple trade tariffs on imports from China and a slew of other countries including India. In response several countries imposed counter tariffs in retaliation.
Rural and consumption stories continue to remain attractive with a long term perspective. Our investment focus continues to remain quality centric. This approach has softened the impact of volatile markets on our equity portfolios. Going-forward, we continue to expect elevated volatility levels in the equity markets and hence advise investors to look at equity allocations from a medium to long term investment horizon. Systematic investments into equity products could also help investors ride out short term volatility.

RBI Policy & Minutes – In Line : In the recent bi-monthly monetary policy review meet the RBI decided to increase the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25 per cent. The minutes of the June MPC meeting reinstated the cautious approach as reflected in the MPC policy. All members acknowledged that inflation uncertainty has increased and thus warrants a policy action. While most members believe food inflation has moderated, uncertainty around the MSP prices continues to linger.
Rising Crude – Inflationary Pressures likely : Crude prices continued to remain elevated. Rising oil prices have raised fears of inflation and fiscal slippage. If oil related excise duties are reduced, the deficit is likely widen. CPI inflation inched up to 4.87% in May V/s 4.58% in April. Core inflation inched up marginally to 5.73% as well.
Depreciating Currency : The USD-INR depreciated to an all-time low of Rs 69/US$ in June in line with other EM currencies. While the recent fall has been sharp, other EM currencies have seen a sharper deterioration over the last 5 years as compared to the INR which has remained largely stable. The recent fall has been consistent with the flight to safety seen around the world.
Government Finances – A Fiscal Worry? : The central government’s fiscal deficit in Apr-May reached 55% of the budgeted target. 95,610 Cr.
Rate Hikes, Trade Wars 2.0 The global risk off trade : In global events, The US Fed raised its rates by 25 bps, indicating the possibility for two more hikes in CY2018. In a surprising move, the US imposed import tariffs on NAFTA countries and the EU in a sign of rising tensions between the US and its allies. The US also re-escalated trade tensions with China and cancelled the Iran deal creating further uncertainty in global markets. FPI`s have sold EM markets in a global risk off trade play. CYTD net outflows across domestic capital markets topped 48,000 Cr.
FPI`s continue to remain consistent sellers in bond markets for the last few months. The market in our view has priced in 50 basis rate hikes till March 2019. We do not foresee a significant rally on the back of lingering fiscal issues and poor demand supply dynamics. We continue to see long bonds trade in a narrow range and hence find limited opportunities in this space.
Banking liquidity continues to remain neutral. Core liquidity moved into deficit territory on the back of increasing currency in circulation and forex Intervention to stabilize the domestic currency markets. As a result, the RBI conducted OMO purchases during the month to infuse additional liquidity. RBI is expected to continue asset purchases in an attempt to maintain a neutral liquidity environment.
1-4 year corporate bonds currently offer significant opportunities on a risk adjusted basis as the risk of rate hikes are adequately priced in by the market and offer significant ‘carry cushion’. Further these bonds offer lower volatility as compared to their longer dated counterparts. Currently short bonds offer 200+ basis spreads over operative rates and hence remain conducive for investors on a risk reward basis.

• The economy continues to stand on a solid macro foundation and political stability. Oil could play spoil s po r t . G loba l f a c t o r s currently playing a larger role in market sentiment.
• RBI policy and minutes in line. Markets have priced in 50 bps rate hikes till March 2019.
• We do not foresee a significant rally on the back of lingering fiscal issues and p o o r d e m a n d s u p p l y dynamics.
• Long bonds are likely to trade range bound. Short tenor bonds look attractive from a risk reward perspective.
• We continue to advise investors to stay invested in short to medium term strategies and actively look at credit funds.

Quick Take - Equity
•
•
•
Equity market valuations are broadly reasonable adjusted for the cyclical low in earnings and potential for revival going forward.
We remain bullish on equities from a medium to long term perspective.
Investors are suggested to have their asset allocation plan based on one’s risk appetite and future goals in life.
Quick Take - Fixed Income•
•
•
•
•
The economy continues to stand on a solid macro foundation and political stability. Oil could play spoil sport. Global factors currently playing a larger role in market sentiment.
RBI policy and minutes in line. Markets have priced in 50 bps rate hikes till March 2019.
We do not foresee a significant rally on the back of lingering fiscal issues and poor demand supply dynamics.
Long bonds are likely to trade range bound. Short tenor bonds look attractive from a risk reward perspective.
We continue to advise investors to stay invested in short to medium term strategies and actively look at credit funds.10 yr G-Sec : Last 1 year

Key highlights
HYBRIDOUTLOOK
JULY 2018
Global geo politics, and a global risk off trade continued to weigh on markets during the month. The S&P BSE Sensex and NIFTY 50 remained flat for the 2nd month in a row. NIFTY Midcap 100 and NIFTY Smallcap 100 indices continued to underperform large caps significantly falling 3.8% and 8.3% respectively. FPIs continued to remain net sellers this month. With this total outflow from equity and debt markets for the calendar year stand as at Rs 48,000 Cr.
• RBI Policy & Minutes – In Line : In the recent bi-monthly monetary policy review meet the RBI decided to increase the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25 per cent. The minutes of the June MPC meeting reinstated the cautious approach as reflected in the MPC policy. All members acknowledged that inflation uncertainty has increased and thus warrants a policy action. While most members believe food inflation has moderated, uncertainty around the MSP prices continues to linger.
• Rising Crude – Inflationary Pressures likely : Crude prices continued to remain elevated. Rising oil prices have raised fears of inflation and fiscal slippage. If oil related excise duties are reduced, the deficit is likely widen. CPI inflation inched up to 4.87% in May V/s 4.58% in April. Core inflation inched up marginally to 5.73% as well.
• Depreciating Currency : The USD-INR depreciated to an all-time low of Rs 69/US$ in June in line with other EM currencies. While the recent fall has been sharp, other EM currencies have seen a sharper deterioration over the last 5 years as compared to the INR which has remained largely stable. The recent fall has been consistent with the flight to safety seen around the world.
• Government Finances – A Fiscal Worry? : The central government’s fiscal deficit in Apr-May reached 55% of the budgeted target. 95,610 Cr.
• Rate Hikes, Trade Wars 2.0 The global risk off trade : In global events, The US Fed raised its rates by 25 bps, indicating the possibility for
Key Events During the Month
and
two more hikes in CY2018.
Equity Markets
Rural and consumption stories continue to remain attractive with a long term perspective. Our investment focus continues to remain quality centric. This approach has softened the impact of volatile markets on our equity portfolios. Going-forward, we continue to expect elevated volatility levels in the equity markets and hence advise investors to look at equity allocations from a medium to long term investment horizon. Systematic investments into equity products could also help investors ride out short term volatility.
Debt Markets
