TODAY’S MEETING President-Elect Maureen Murphy led today’s meeting and welcomed
everyone. President Wiley Cutts was attending a workshop in Prattville
today. Rhonda Cope led club members in prayer and Wanda Robinson led us
in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We were delighted to have Jess
Hawthorne visiting the club today. He updated club members on his travels
and sale of his house in Montgomery. He plans to travel to Germany to visit
relatives in Wiesbaden in the near future. Mike Murphy also visited the club,
and was celebrating his 72nd
birthday. Maureen announced that The
Montgomery Advertiser and The Montgomery Independent both featured a
story and picture of Madeline Pendley, the Montgomery Exchange Club
Youth of the Year and the ADEC Youth of the Year winner.
Our speaker today was Larry Newton, 2009 Huntingdon Political Science
major and former Scheduler/Operations Manager for the Kay Ivey Campaign
in 2010 and Operations Manager for the current Commissioner of Agriculture
and Industries for the state of Alabama. Larry served as 2009 National Vice-
Chief of the Order of the Arrow, and is very active in local, state, and
national Boy Scouts of America programs and troops. Larry spoke of the
history of the positive economic impacts on the state of Alabama, including
the location of the Mercedes, Hyundai, and Airbus factories in the state and
commented on how agribusiness remains the number one industry in the
