GUIDING EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES Students learn best:
In a safe, respectful and supportive environment where they feel valued and know that their teachers have confidence in their ability to learn
When they are actively engaged, and when their teachers employ a wide repertoire of teaching and learning methods
In a challenging environment where they are inspired to do their best, to apply themselves
to their studies, to take responsible risks and to strive for continual improvement
When their teachers address their individual needs, thereby acknowledging that people have different minds, learn in different ways and progress at different rates
When they make connections, apply their knowledge and utilize higher level thinking skills
In a well-prepared and resource-rich environment that integrates information technologies
When they receive meaningful and timely feedback on what they do well and how they can improve
When parents, students and teachers work in a positive partnership
VISIONHillfield Strathallan College inspires its
students to reach their full potential and to better the world around them.

The Montessori School has been an integral part of our community since 1967. The School is Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA) accredited, upholding the highest standards of an authentic Montessori education.
THE HSC LEARNING JOURNEY BEGINS HERE
Student learning in the Montessori School is integrated into our College’s overall
curriculum. The program follows a progressive continuum to allow for a seamless
transition into our Middle and Senior Schools.
Our Montessori Program reflects the nurturing of each individual student’s ability
and preferred learning style, while cultivating the universal values of self-respect,
self-discipline, moral development, respect for others, empathy and peacefulness.
The goal of the curriculum is to construct knowledge through active learning that
involves concrete experience, reflective observation and abstract conceptualization.
Students in the Montessori program become independent and self-motivated
learners through the freedom of choice and a heightened sense of responsibility.
Students are afforded experiences and opportunities that support the core values of self-confidence, self-directed learning,
independence, and respect for others and the environment.- Dianne de Freitas,
Montessori School Principal

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEThe Montessori School strives to provide a program that meets the individual needs of every learner. Our enriched program helps direct the natural curiosity and joy of discovery in each child. Multi-age classes offer each student the experience of being challenged beyond their grade level. Keen observation, knowledge of different learning styles, guidance and empathy—these are just a few of the tools our experienced Montessori faculty members use to provide an exceptional learning environment.
Each Montessori School teacher holds recognized Montessori teaching
certificates from accredited training programs and provide the dynamic
link between the prepared environment and the children.
Enriched French classes, music, art, physical education and
computer technology are also offered as part of our

CO-CURRICULAR AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIESLeadership forms naturally inside our Montessori classrooms. Students work in collaboration in mixed-age groups, with the older students often helping to teach the younger ones.
We provide students with a full education that includes numerous
opportunities to expand their horizons beyond the classroom. All
Montessori students from six to nine years of age participate in our
co-curricular after school activities that support a broad range of
abilities and interests. Our athletic program provides a supportive
introduction to competitive sport and offers our athletes, eight
years of age and up, the opportunity to represent our College on
sport teams that play against other CISAA teams. Many of our
young athletes go on to play on our Middle and Senior School
varsity team. Co-curricular activities enhance the learning process
and promote a sense of unity, social interaction, and physical and
emotional health.
