WINDPROOF: 21MENS

DESPITE ITS WHIMSICAL NAME THE MONTANE HIGHLAND

FLING IS A DELICIOuSLY TOuGH RACE. ITS A RuNNERS uLTRA,

COMBINING BRuTAL CuT OFF TIMES WITH THE IMPOSING 53 MILES

OF THE BEAuTIFuL SCOTTISH WEST HIGHLAND WAY, STARTING

IN MILNGAvIE, ENDING IN TYNDRuM. ADD SuBLIME BLuE SKIES

AND AN uNRELENTING SCOTTISH LATE APRIL SuN (YES THATS

RIGHT, SuN) AND YOu HAvE AN EXTRAORDINARY RACE.

The race was held on Saturday 30th April and the unusual weather

was always going to be the wild card; those that run Scottish trails

are certainly not used to such conditions, most being accustomed

to the unrelenting dreich mizzle that permeates your very soul.

So it was with all of this in mind that racers paced the Milngavie

railway car park at dawn pouting and posing race faces harder

than carbon steel.

Category after category lined up under the tunnel in Milngavie and

launched themselves off onto the West Highland Way. Females, male

veterans 60, male veterans 50, male veterans 40, relay teams and

male elite racers chased up the Milngavie high street whooping and

cheering as they ran. Race start for the male elite racers was a picture

of intensity. Jez Brag, Stuart Mills and Andrew James stood centre

front at the head of the pack each one tense, poised and ready to

battle the other.

The trio duked it out the 20 miles to Balmaha screaming through the

National Park visitors centre onwards along the shore of Loch Lomond.

Meanwhile Kate Jenkins led the female pack powering up and down

hills completely focused on the road ahead.

As the day drew on the heat increased and it was all the runners could do

to keep cool and drink as much fluid as possible. A cool wind channeled

down Glen Falloch and onto Loch Lomond providing intermittent relief,

but most of the day was a sweat soaked hot affair. At Derrydaroch near

Crianlarich, marshals and well wishers cheered the runners on as they

swept past grinning through gritted teeth.

Nine tumultuous and harrowing hours later Kate Jenkins came into

sight at the race finish in Tyndrum. With an incredible performance

a perfect example of utter single-mindedness she powered across

the finish line to the rapturous applause of the crowd who were all

in awe of her heroic feat. She sat beaming on the wooden prize podium

sipping water, her medal round her neck. Was that worth it? she

asked herself. Absolutely! came the reply from her and those around!

Meanwhile things had heated up amongst the male elite. Jez Brag

and Andrew James were in a dog fight over the final miles, whilst

Alan Smalls came tearing up behind. Everyone waited with baited

breath at the race finish. Who was in the lead Jez or Andrew?

My son is in the lead! suddenly exclaimed Mr James, Andrews father

and at once powering around the corner appeared Andrew James

jumping across the finish line into the waiting arms of his proud Dad.

Setting a new course record of 7:12:08 Andrew, who was winner of the

Montane Lakeland 50 last year, had once again thrown the gauntlet

down. Jez Brag came in 3 minutes later with 07:15:12 immediately

striding across to Andrew and shaking his hand vigorously.

Runner after runner ran up the finish avenue and across the line to

rounds and rounds of applause. This has been an extraordinary day,

commented one bystander. The most striking aspect is the good spirit

and respect everyone has for each other. Without question this really is

a serious runners race. As the prize ceremony came to a close at 8pm

all gleefully piled into Sarahs Real Food caf, stuffing down treats and

reflecting on the race. Have you enjoyed yourself? Murdo Macdonald

the race organiser kept asking everyone. That was a really tough, hot

day one racer commented, sipping a cold beer as the sun finally sank

behind the hills, but I loved every brutal second of it!

MENS BASE-LAYER: 36

Bionic base-layers are constructed from Merino Perform, a unique fabric that blends the best properties of merino wool on the inside and polyester on the outside.

Merino wool excels at trapping moisture vapour perspiring from the skin, whilst polyester transports that moisture in liquid form and spreads it out, enabling the garment to dry extremely quickly.

This unique composite construction and performance means that:

The wearer feels cooler during exercise, resulting in the delay of sweat creation.

The Atacama crossing is gruelling not only because of the forbidding terrain, which is rarely flat underfoot and a harsh climate, but also because of the altitude that averages 2500m (8000ft) during the race.

danish competitor Anders Jensen was crowned champion of the Atacama crossing 2011, after finishing the gruelling 250km self-supported footrace in a time of 30:49:05. it is the second win for the Singapore-based 29-year-old, following his strong performance in the Sahara Race 2010.

i feel awesome, said Jensen as he crossed the finish line in the ancient town of San Pedro de Atacama. im feeling much better than after winning the Sahara Race 2010. The competition was much tighter and i found this race harder.

The competition was indeed strong, with chiles very own Martin chinchilla (24) impressing the field as he pushed alongside Jensen for much of the race. Martin gave me a really good challenge, said Jensen. he is only 24 years old, he could have won this event as well.

canadian competitor darren Nichols (37) took third position after his strong performance during the brutal 73.6km stretch of the Long March, when the newcomer overtook both leaders and won the days stage with a time of 08:55:20.

Samantha Fanshawe, Event director for RacingThePlanet said, Anders Jensen is a deserving champion and an impressive athlete. he faced stiff competition every step of this race from Martin chinchilla and after losing his lead in Stage 5 to darren Nichols he really had to dig deep to maintain his position. Once again The Long March proved the key turning point of the race.

Mexicos Nahila hernandez San Juan (36) won the womens division, claiming first place with a time of 38:16:25 and 12th position overall.

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go, she said. im very happy about winning the race. in the Sahara Race i did not push this much; its only in the Atacama that i came to race.

Newcomer Angelique Tostee (24) of South Africa took second place (39:15:40) and canadas christine horner (46) finished in third place with 41:07:04.

Fanshawe continues, The womens competition was hard fought and it was fantastic to have such a talented group of ladies competing, with the leading trio finishing within the top twenty overall. Nahila hernandez San Juan certainly found her stride in chile and i wouldnt be surprised if we saw her pushing the men right at the top of the field next time.

A record number of teams took part this year, with the Guatemalan team hombres de Maiz (Men of Maize) emerging as the ultimate victors. i feel humble and elated, said the teams Gabriel Ayau. This is such a wonderful and magical place. it really takes strength of character to be able to finish this race. its all in mind the body is gone after the first day!

Thirty-six nationalities were represented in the Atacama crossing 2011, which took place over seven days in the Atacama desert. The six-stage course moved from sand dunes, up hills and down through winding gullies and canyons, into the difficult terrain of endless, coral-like salt flats.

The 111 competitors who started the race on March 6th enjoyed near-perfect racing conditions, with clear sunny skies - and 87 competitors were awarded medals on March 12th.

There were several upsets as the altitude and extremely difficult terrain took its toll on competitors, including the United Kingdoms Sophie collett. She was on course for second place in the womens division until the third day, when she slowed due to effects of the high altitude. On the other hand, a cast of 4 deserts veterans earned their way into the 4 deserts club, having also completed the Gobi March (china), Sahara Race (Egypt) and The Last desert (Antarctica). These include Lucy Tang, May Okabe, devrim celal, Alain Wehbi, diego carvajal and Thaddeus Lawrence.

event fabrics draw their unique properties from a proprietary and patented waterproof membrane. Its unique composition

allows millions of tiny pores to breathe at their full potential. Sweat vents directly to the outside of the fabric in one easy step.

This is called direct venting Technology. Its genius is hidden in its simplicity. event fabrics simply let the sweat out.

event FAbRICS: dIRECT vENTINg TECHNOLOgY

Most common waterproof/breathable technologies

do not literally breathe. Instead they move sweat

in two slow steps by a process of diffusion through

a Polyurethane (PU) layer. First sweat is condensed

and absorbed into the PU layer on the inside of the

fabric. because PU absorbs and retains sweat, the

inside of the fabric becomes wet. Then, body heat

begins to push that dampness through to the outside

of the fabric where it can finally evaporate - a very

inefficient process.

We could mention the exceptionally low Water vapor Resistance (RET) of event fabrics. Or, we could talk about how

much higher the Moisture vapor Transmission Rates (MvTR) are in laboratory tests. but, do you run in the lab? do you

ice climb inside a climate chamber? The bottom line is decided in the field. Out there its a black and white world: youre

either wet or dry. You either soak in your own sweat, or not. Its that simple. event fabrics let the sweat out.

Abrasion by cheap rucksack shoulder fabrics has been a consistent problem for many years. How should this be countered? Add even tougher, heavier fabrics to our shell garments and compromise the weight and breathability in this area? No way! When starting the process of rucksack design, this was one of our first priorities, and we worked hard to source a special fabric which will be more kind to all waterproof shell fabrics. We call it Contact Mesh.

It is far less abrasive than Airmesh, a fabric used on many packs in the outdoor market.

It is soft against the skin, helping to reduce any skin abrasion if only wearing a T-Shirt.

It has a superb ability to shed snow easily and dries exceptionally quickly; far better than Airmesh.

Raptor fabrics are woven with micro yarns into a tough matrix that can also be sewn with clean lines to reduce bulk and wear points.
