    Just Thinking

By: May JonesSomewhere between 5:15 and 5:30 in the

morning, regardless of the time of year, my eyesly open like venetian blinds. I stretch a bit, get

out of the left side of the bed, and head down thestairs to put on a pot of coffee (same brand, strength and flavor), and warm a banana muffin.Out of the cabinet, I take the same two coffeecups, fill them with freshly brewed coffee, andadd one spoonful of sugar to each. Then, withcoffee and muffin in hand, I sit in the same spoton the couch and enjoy my morning treasureswhile my husband is in the shower.

We move through the day as most people do;working, cleaning, making phone calls, andsolving problems. When its time for dinner, wesit in the same kitchen chairs and eat one of theollowing meals: meatloaf, chicken, steak, pork,

ham, or a pasta dish. Along with it, we might havepeas, carrots, beans, corn, broccoli, or if we geteally crazy—- brussels sprouts. If we have a

glass of wine, it’s always from the same vineyard;one white and one red. For nostalgicentertainment, we watch old re—-runs of MatchGame, hosted by Gene Rayburn.

Routine or rut? By definition, a routine is a fixedprogram. A rut is usually a dull and unpromising

course of life. Its hard to know which categoryhe above falls into, but a routine isn’t necessarilygood, and a rut is not necessarily bad. Somestudies show that people who follow a routineve longer, tend to be happier, and are more well

adjusted than their non-routine counterparts.Could it be possible that wasting time on trivialdecisions wastes energy that could be betterused for something else? Steve Jobs surely didn’twaste a lot of his time thinking about what to wearon any given day. However, too much routine runshe risk of morphing into a rut and snuffing out

creativity and adventure. My gut usually tells me whether I’m in a routine

or a rut: typically I feel open to possibilities when

have a good routine, and those samepossibilities feel closed off when I am in a rut.

What do you think?Your comments are welcome at [email protected]

Battenkill Conservancy’s Save the WallProject Gets Underway with Boy Scout

Troop 127Great weather, enthusiastic boy scouts from Troop 127 and

the coordination of helpful neighbors and businesses resulted

in uncovering the historic stone wall along Route 29 in Middle

Falls that has been mostly hidden due to brush overgrowth,

lack of maintenance and more recently an abundance of fallen

    leaves.

Thanks to adjoining property owners, Kelly & Eric Johnson,

the scouts were able to access the invasive knotweed and grape-

    vines behind the wall. With

    the assistance of Millie and

    John Reiger of Country

    Power Products, the scouts

    had plenty of tools and

    were kept safe along the

    busy stretch of highway

with vests, signs and conesthanks to Ian Miller and the

NYS DOT’s Adopt a Highway Program. Pizza lunch and sea-

sonal cider came in thanks to Spiros Tsitos of Greenwich House

of Pizza and Nils Cederstrom of Whipple City Pizza making

the morning a true community effort.

Participating scouts, parents & volunteers included Chery,

Charlie, D’Artagnan & Lucas Fearon, Steve & Joleen Meins,

Joshua and Mathew Epstein, Timothy Banfield, Veronica and

Evan Atwell, Melissa Bauer, Joseph Dziewolski, Chris and

Mathew Ginart, Charles & Conor Showalter, Lorraine M

Ballard and Cub Scout Lane Schultz and his mom.

Removing the overgrowth and vegetation revealed where parts

of the wall have collapsed onto the sidewalk area. While addi-

tional work and the removal of select trees, grapevines and

knotweed will be required, the wall and the area across the

street from the Battenkill bog already looks a lot better.
