Reflections: Of Things to ComeWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

When I was a freshman in high school, my mother saw me walkinghome one day. I had been staring intently at the ground as I wentalong, so I had not seen her watching me. “Why do you always look atyour feet when you walk?” she had asked, and I had replied, “Because

I’m afraid of tripping over something and falling flat on my face in front of everyone.”My mother had smiled at me, folded me into her arms, and told me something I havenever forgotten: “If you only look at your feet, you’re going to miss out on seeingeverything else the world has to offer. You can’t be afraid of tripping all the time. Sowhat if you trip? You might not. Wouldn’t you rather see the trees and the sky than yoursneakers? Think about everything you’re missing, Rachel!”After that, I started to look where I was headed. Staring straight out, looking life rightin the eye, made a world of a difference for me then and it still does now. When I writeabout the things that have happened in my life, I feel connected to my roots. There ishappiness in knowing one’s foundation, in recalling the moments that have shaped anentire lifetime. However, reflection should never be focused only on the past or evensolely on the present. There is great value on looking ahead as well. One of the best things about the end of the year is that I begin to take stock of the entireyear. 2014 was not a bad year at all; it was busy and chaotic, but full-bodied and fluid aswell. I finally graduated from college with my bachelors degree and began work on mygraduate degree. My youngest child began pre-school, thus entering our family intothat oh-wow-all-of-the-kids-are-officially-in-school-now era, which was a really bigdeal for us. I started writing this column, and I have begun writing my first novel. When I began to reflect on 2014, I realized that so many of my columns have beenconcerned with the past, with a few dedicated to the present, but none written about thefuture. And why is that? Why is the future so difficult to write about? Even now, Icannot think about the future without remembering the past and pulling in the present. But the future, standing alone in all its glory, is a beautiful thing. It consists of nothingbut a great white void, into which I could put anything. Anything! 2015 could really besomething amazing, and when I think about every ounce of potential and possibilitywaiting for me just across the threshold of the New Year, I begin to get excited. I haveno idea what is going to happen, but I do know that I am going to stop looking at whereI have been and start focusing, instead, on where I am going.Happy New Year!

KYLE SISCO OF FORT ANN, NY, REPRESENTED SUNY Oneonta in thesemifinal round of the 2014 College Fed Challenge at the Federal ReserveBank of New York on Nov. 14. SUNY Oneonta won an Honorable MentionAward in the competition. The College Fed Challenge is a team competition for undergraduate collegestudents. Inspired by the working of the Federal Open Market Committee, thecompetition requires that students work as a team to research and analyzecurrent economic data, develop a forecast and review potential future eco-nomic risks, and prepare a presentation and answer questions on a recom-mendation for monetary policy.Sisco, a senior majoring in Economics, was part of a 13-member SUNYOneonta team that traveled to the Federal Reserve Bank for the first round ofthe competition on Oct. 31. The students were accompanied by their adviser,Associate Professor of Economics David Ring. Teams from 36 colleges anduniversities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut competed in the firstround, and the SUNY Oneonta contingent bested teams from the other schoolsin its competition bracket to advance to the semifinals. Each team was evaluated in four categories--knowledge of current economicconditions, understanding of monetary policy, data and analysis, and team-work. In the semifinal round, SUNY Oneonta's team earned a score of 16 outof 20 to finish among the top nine schools. Judges praised the SUNY Oneontacontingent for its teamwork and awarded a 5 (the highest score possible) inthis category.SUNY Oneonta's School of Economics and Business is accredited by AACSBInternational--the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, adesignation achieved by fewer than 5 percent of business schools aroundthe world. In addition to its three undergraduate majors, Professional Ac-counting, Business Economics and Economic, the school offers two minors, four concentrations and seven cooperative programs.A liberal arts institution with a strong focus on undergraduate research, SUNYOneonta consistently gains recognition for delivering excellence and value. The college has been named to Kiplinger's list of "100 Best Values in PublicColleges" for eight consecutive years, was ranked No. 2 on the 2014 Kiplinger'slist of "10 Best Public Colleges With Lowest Debt at Graduation" and sits atNo. 9 on the 2015 U.S. News and World Report list of the best public institu-tions in the region. The college enrolls 6,000 students in its 70 undergraduatemajors and 14 graduate programs.

A good one?

The Republicans won the "mid-term" elections by overwhelmingmargins. Now, the liberal talking heads and pundits are attributing the re-sults to voter anger over gridlock. These tactics are clever ma-neuvering in an attempt to influence the timid Republicans intobelieving that the electorate wants "compromise," "working to-gether," and "getting things done."Unfortunately, the timid Republicans will probably fall for it! Theyhave shown a considerable lack of intestinal fortitude in the past, and, I predict, they will continue their timid ways. The truth of why the Democrats suffered such a significantdefeat is that the electorate detests the Socialist policies espousedby The President and his party. They were protesting"Obamacare," the lack of border discipline, amnesty, poor dis-ease protocols, and a disastrous foreign policy. An ideology lean-ing way too far left scared the electorate, who have enjoyed thefruits of a robust capitalism, and freedoms guaranteed by a wellthought out Constitution. They rejected the liberal policies ofunrestrained spending and entitlement expansions. Don't you find it interesting that Harry Reid, Senate MajorityLeader, had absolutely no interest in compromise, never reach-ing across the aisle, and not even presenting for vote over 300bills submitted to him by the House of Representatives. He per-formed his obstructionist duties almost flawlessly, making it pos-sible for the President to travel around the world, with his familyin tow, issuing edicts that were almost all totally unconstitutional, all the while not having to deal with the tough issues. My Heav-ens, during this President's entire tenure, Mr Hairy Reid nevereven presented a budget that our representatives could vote on.Now that they have received a major whooping, they want theRepublicans to compromise. What duplicity! What arrogance!Typical of bullies, once stood up to they whimper for mercy.Don't fall for it Republicans. Fill the Oval Office with legislationthat reflects the will of the people. Repeal Obamacare, securethe border, pass a reasonable approach to illegal immigration, cutthe entitlement programs, amend the tax laws to make themsimple and understandable by average citizens so that there isequity in the tax law, not social restructuring. In other words, goexactly in the opposite direction the President and Mr Reed havebeen taking this country. Make Mr Obama deal with the toughissues and make him make some decisions. Get his butt off theplane and down to work. Will they? I wonder.

WHEN IT COMES TO FERTILIZER COSTS, AGRICULTURAL LENDER RABOBANKSEEMS TO THINK THAT FARMERS CAN EXPECT MORE OF THE SAME IN 2015.“Overall, the situation appears similar to last year,” according to Rabobank’s quarterly fertilizerreport, which was released this week. “With moderately bearish sentiment in the first quarter of2015, standard price support will originate from spring buying as stocks deplete. The bearish outlook is a result of ample supplies, which are likely to limit the price growth for urea, ammonia, potash, and phosphates. Another factor in Rabobank’s forecast? The potential for taxpolicy changes in China, which could in-crease that country’s exports of urea andpotash.“China is set once again to make majorchanges to its export tariff scheme in phos-phates and urea,” noted the report, which itsaid “could have a major impact on the avail-ability and pricing of urea.” In terms of pot-ash, China is both expanding its potash op-erations and building up its stocks. Thatgives the country some “pricing power,”according to Rabobank, but only a limitedamount. “Reduced global demand and rela-tively high inventories will limit upside in potash ahead of the major 2015 contract negotiations inChina, despite supply management from producers and a flooding incident at one of the mines.”Back in the U.S., relatively low crop prices, late harvest, and cold weather are affecting fertilizeruse. “At the end of November, 40 percent to 50 percent of the typical fall ammonia applications inthe Midwest had not yet occurred,” the report said. “Overall, we expect a relative reduction infertilizer demand due to carry-over stocks, lower corn acres, and more prudent application.”Well, as we have seen in the past, predictions do not always come true.

Hi my name is Milo! I am a 1 year old American ShelterDog. I am initially nervous in new situ-ations. This will improve with expo-sure & experience. Once I’m settled Iam friendly and playful. I will need somemanners, which should increase my con-fidence. I do have a lot of puppy energyand will need plenty of exercise. I will

do anything for a treat. I also can get a little mouthy in excit-ing situations, so a calmer home where I can get plenty ofexercise is ideal. I came to SCAC as a stray from the Ben-nington area. If I sound like I could be your next family mem-ber, please come meet me at SCAC!

Fergus is a high energy boy that originallycame to SCAC when his owner died. Heis a friendly male that loves attention andhas lived with other cats, but can be par-ticular about who he gets along with.

Fergus is litter box trained and can be indoor/outdoor.

Ella came to SCAC because she had just a bittoo much energy for her previous guardian tohandle. Ella is playful, friendly, and indoor only. She has lived with dogs but would do best in a

home without them. She is good with other cats and youngkids. If you think Ella could be the girl for you please stop inand visit her.

USDA OFFERS “NO DOWN PAYMENT” OPTIONS FOR RURAL NEW YORK HOMEBUYERS –A USDA official announced today that funds are available to help rural residents ofNew York buy or repair single family homes. “Expanding and preserving homeownership is a majorpart of the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous rural New York,” said Scott Collins, USDARural Development New York Acting State Director. “There is tremendous potential for New Yorkand these funds will contribute towards building safe communities that people can call home.”Funding is available through two Rural Development housing programs; the Home Repair programand the Guaranteed and Direct Loan program. The Guaranteed Loan program assists lenders ex-tend mortgages with affordable terms to low and moderate income homebuyers. Rural Develop-ment guarantees the loan, thereby reducing the lender’s risk and enabling them to provide financingat more favorable rates and terms to families wishing to purchase a home. Guaranteed loans can bemade on either a new or existing home for up to one-hundred percent of the appraised value. Underthe Direct loan program, applicants apply directly to USDA for loan assistance. No down paymentis required and applicants may be eligible for payment assistance, which subsidizes the interestportion of the mortgage, lowering the overall monthly payment. The Home Repair program offersvery-low income homeowners loans and grants to make general home repairs or modifications, which may improve or modernize a home. The interest rate on these loans is one percent and themaximum term is 20 years. Applicants may obtain multiple loans, with a maximum outstanding loanamount at a given time of $20,000. Grants are available to very-low income homeowners age 62or older who cannot afford a loan. Grants are limited to a lifetime assistance of $7,500 and must beused to remove health and safety hazards or make a home more handicap accessible. These pro-grams have been very successful by providing decent, safe, and sanitary housing in rural New York. For more information on these programs and how to apply, please contact our Greenwich office at(518) 692-9940 Ext. 4 or visit click here to find out more about USDA’s housing programs. Presi-dent Obama's plan for rural America has brought about historic investment and resulted in strongerrural communities. Under the President's leadership, these investments in housing, community fa-cilities, businesses and infrastructure have empowered rural America to continue leading the way –strengthening America's economy, small towns and rural communities. USDA's investments inrural communities support the rural way of life that stands as the backbone of our American values.
