Movie: DAVID HOCKNEY AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTSPresented by Exhibition On Screen. Widely considered Britain’s most popular artist, David Hockney is a global sensation with exhibitions in London, New York, Paris, and beyond, attracting millions of visitors worldwide. Now entering his 9th decade, Hockney shows absolutely no evidence of slowing down or losing his trademark boldness. Featur-ing intimate and in-depth interviews with Hockney, this revealing film focuses on two blockbuster exhibitions held in 2012 and 2016 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Movie: GRACE JONES: BLOODLIGHT AND BAMIThis electrifying journey through the public and private worlds of pop culture mega-icon Grace Jones juxtaposes musical sequences with intimate personal footage, all the while brimming with Jones’s bold aesthetic. A larger-than-life entertainer, an androgynous glam-pop diva, an unpredictable media presence – Grace Jones is all these things and more. Sophie Fiennes’s documentary goes beyond the traditional music biography, offering a portrait as stylish and unconventional as its subject. Taking us to Jamaica, the studio with long-time collaborators Sly & Robbie, and behind the scenes at shows around the world, the film reveals Jones as lover, daughter, mother, and businesswoman. Jones has said watching the film “will be like seeing me almost naked” and, indeed, Fiennes’s treatment is every bit as genre-bending as its subject, untamed by neither age nor life itself. 2017. 1h55m.

Movie: LEAN ON PETEFrom acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Haigh and based on the novel by Willy Vlautin. Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson (Charlie Plummer) arrives in Portland, Oregon, with his single father after a series of hard knocks. Charley finds acceptance at a local racetrack where he lands a job caring for an aging quarter horse named Lean On Pete. Movie: BOOM FOR REAL: THE TEENAGE YEARS OF BASQUIATThis documentary follows Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life pre-fame and how NYC, the times, the people, and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante, and more. Movie: SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT [1955]Celebrating Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday: After fifteen films that received mostly local acclaim, the 1955 comedy Smiles of a Summer Night, at last, ushered in an international audience for Ingmar Berg-man. In turn-of-the-century Sweden, four men and four women attempt to navigate the laws of attraction. During a weekend in the country, the women collude to force the men’s hands in matters of the heart, exposing their pretensions and insecurities along the way. Movie: STRANGERS ON THE EARTHEurope’s most popular pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago attracts wayfarers of all stripes to walk its ancient paths in search of meaning. One such pilgrim is Dane Johansen, an American cellist who ventured to walk the Camino with his instrument on his back, performing music for his fellow pilgrims along the way. Accompanied by the vast landscapes of Northern Spain, the haunting music of J.S. Movie: THE DAY AFTERSouth Korean Master Hong Sangsoo’s 21st feature as director, The Day After, is a mordantly comic tale of infidelity and mistaken identity. Book publisher Bongwan’s (Kwon Haehyo) marriage is on the rocks after his wife (Cho Yunhee) discovers the affair he’s been having with his assistant (Kim Saebyuk). Now that relationship is ending and Bongwan’s new assistant, the sharp and sensitive Areum (Kim Minhee), on her first day in the office, is left to navigate the fallout of all the turnover in Bongwan’s life. With its ingeniously destabilizing leaps through time and stark black and white cinematography, The Day After begins as a darkly hilarious look at a man embroiled in extramarital en-tanglements but soon shifts – in a way only Hong can manage – into a heartfelt portrayal of a young woman on a quest for spiritual fulfillment. Movie: ZAMAZama, an officer of the Spanish Crown born in South America, waits for a letter from the King granting him a transfer from the town in which he is stagnating, to a better place. His situation is delicate. He must ensure that nothing overshadows his transfer. He is forced to accept, submissively, every task entrusted to him by successive Governors who come and go as he stays behind. The years go by and the letter from the King never arrives.
