Seventeen football teams from the Northwest 1A/2A and Mountain Valley 1A/2A conferences started the season. Twelve made the play-offs. But only five are still standing after the first Friday night of post-season action.

For the most part, things went ac-cording to the seeding on opening night. Eight of the 11 home teams in games involving the local confer-ences walked off the field winners.

But one that didn’t — the Star-mount Rams — generated the most buzz around the area. Despite out-scoring foes 575-81 on the way to an 11-0 regular season campaign, Star-mount became its own worst enemy Friday and found itself eliminated after just one playoff round. The Rams committed three turnovers in-side the red zone and were flagged for 85 yards in penalties, falling 24-14 to East Rutherford.

The other area conference cham-pion, the Mount Airy Granite Bears, had an easy time against Central Academy (41-6 triumph) to improve

their post-season record to 15-3 since 2006.

Elkin, which won state titles in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006, also en-joyed a light-hearted opening night, posting a 59-19 final score against Cherokee that harkened back to some of those championship runs

earlier in the decade. Ironically, the Elks surrendered 59 points to Star-mount at Grissom Stadium earlier in the season.

West Wilkes won a conference rematch with county rival East Wil-kes, and thanks to an upset in the mountains will be at home again

this week. North Stokes, the sev-enth place team in the eight-team Northwest 1A/2A, earned a home first-round game despite its 3-8 re-cord and made the most it, blanking South Stanly 12-0.

Wilkes Central became the only 2AA team from the area to advance, riding a five-touchdown perfor-mance from Trae Alexander past West Lincoln.

Packing up the equipment for the season, in addition to Starmount and East Wilkes, are North Surry, East Surry, Bishop McGuinness, West Stokes and Ashe County.

The MVAC went 3-3 on Friday. Northwest teams were 2-4. Only two area teams will be home this Friday, Mount Airy hosting Albe-marle and West Wilkes entertaining Mitchell. Long drives await Elkin (to Robbinsville), Wilkes Central (to Pisgah) and North Stokes (to Lake-wood).

What will the local playing field look like at this time next week? Could football make an early exit in the area, or can a couple of teams get hot and make a deep playoff run? Stay tuned.

After watching his team beat Wilkes Central on Nov. 5 to finish the regular season undefeated, Starmount coach Scott Johnson was asked about being 11-0 heading into the playoffs.

Johnson didn’t seemed all that thrilled about the question.

“I don’t really think about that. I just think about the next week,” he said. “It’s something they can always remember but sometimes 11-0 is the kiss of death at Starmount, so we don’t talk about it that much. We’ll just get ready for the next game.” ”

How haunting those words turned out to be.

In the 40-plus year history of Star-mount High School football, only three teams have finished undefeated in the regular season, counting the 2010 group, according to long-time statisti-cian Deana King. Their combined re-cord in the post-season, after Friday night’s 24-14 loss to East Rutherford? Just 1-3.

The 1994 team, which featured stand-outs like Chris Charles, Russ Pardue and Chad Mann, went 11-0 before get-ting upset in the opening round of the playoffs by West Rowan.

The 1999 team, with key players like Jason Shore, Shanlyn Martin, Clarence Gray, Bryan Lashley and Josh Oakes, went 11-0 and managed to get past the first round of the playoffs. But that team — one year removed from the school’s

one and only state championship in football — suffered a controversial 7-3 loss to Swain County in round two.

Swain scored with 15 seconds left when it looked like a school-record 52-yard field goal by Josh Oakes with three minutes on the clock might be the only points. Starmount had a 27-game win-ning streak snapped that night.

“That ‘94 team was awesome,” King said last week prior to the Rams’ meet-ing with East Rutherford. “Our running back got hurt as he scored a TD (in the playoff opener). He broke his ankle on the play. It was our first drive of the game. Our team was never the same.”

Starmount fans still talk about a con-troversial call that helped Swain win the 1999 second-round playoff game, maintaining that WXII video shows a 52-yard Swain pass completion that clearly hit the ground before reaching the receiver. Swain scored on that drive.

The wounds are still fresh from Fri-day night’s 24-14 first-round loss to East Rutherford, and Johnson under-standably didn‘t feel like talking to the media immediately afterward.

There is a lot for this year’s team to hang their hats on for sure, includ-ing several school records and a few achievements that rank in the state re-cord books.

But this was the kind of team that in-spired dreams of joining the 2008 Star-mount squad that made a run to the 2A semifinals, or even the 1998 group that won a state championship.

So what went wrong? Why are the Rams getting ready for basketball, wrestling and other winter pursuits when many — including themselves — still thought they had a month of foot-ball left in them?

Starmount moved the ball reasonably well Friday, posting a pair of 100-yard rushers in Israel Murphy and M.J. Bry-ant. But the Rams had problems getting into the end zone, fumbling twice and throwing an interception inside the East Rutherford 20.

Frequent penalties, which marred the win against Wilkes Central on Nov. 5, again were a problem. Starmount had 85 yards in flags on Friday night. East Rutherford hurt the Rams at times with a passing game they haven’t really seen this year.

Looking over the grand scheme of the season, you have to wonder if Star-mount was hurt by its schedule. The Rams just didn’t get a lot of competition over the past three months, aside from Wilkes Central.

East Rutherford on the other hand played tough foes on several Friday

nights as members of a split 2A/3A league, including 3A powers like Mor-ganton Freedom and Burns, as well as 2A Shelby.

Those type of games, despite being losses, likely sharpened the Cavaliers in a way that a 68-6 win over a completely overmatched foe simply can’t.

Starmount can’t help the caliber of its conference opposition, and the non-conference lineup of Mount Airy, East Surry and North Surry seemed formi-dable enough. Those three teams won 22 games in the regular season.

Starmount just didn’t get pushed enough by its Mountain Valley 1A/2A foes until the Wilkes Central game. The Rams could have used another three or four opponents like the Eagles, who are still alive in the 2AA bracket.

Then again, it just could have been an off night for the Rams, when the team that blew most of its competition off the map didn’t, for whatever reason, act like itself. Line up the teams again to-morrow, and maybe Starmount wins by 30 or 40.

But that isn’t the way high school sports work. And in the annals of Rams football lore, 2010 will forever linger as one of those “what-if” type of years.

History has been unkind to 11-0 Starmount teams

Mount Airy breezes through first round once again

There wasn’t much drama in Mount Airy’s first-round state playoff contest against visit-ing Central Academy.

The Granite Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead and cruised home 41-6, emptying the bench in the fourth quarter.

The victory extended a great run of playoff success for the Bears, who won the 1A state title in 2008 and finished as the runner-up in 2009.

Dating back to 2006, Mount Airy is 15-3 in state playoff games — winning three games in 2006, two in 2007, five in 2008 and four last season.

Mount Airy will face a tough assignment this Friday when Albemarle visits. Albemarle ended the Granite Bears’ run in the 2007 1AA playoffs in the third round, winning 34-23.

Elkin sees the future, gets boost in the present

If you were using an August roster while watching Elkin’s football team beat Cherokee on Friday night, you may have been a bit lost.

Every team calls up some junior varsity standouts for the late-season run. But few teams use those players as much as Elkin has had to in recent weeks.

Injuries and other factors led coach Scott Wood to play a pair of sophomore JV call-ups — Sam Lane and Chris Hudspeth — exten-sively Friday night.

Lane started at outside linebacker and scored a rushing touchdown on the offensive end. Hudspeth, who played some quarterback late in the Wilkes Central loss a few weeks ago, caught a TD pass from starter Ethan Creed and later threw a touchdown pass.

Both players were starters on the Elks’ bas-ketball team last winter. And both have a long history of football success playing for Elkin’s Sertoma program.

Their move up to the varsity high school ranks gives the Elks promise for the next cou-ple of years, not to mention helping provide a boost in the present.

“They are two kids who will be relied heavily upon in the future. Two kids we’ve tried to get ready for this point throughout the year,” Wood said.

Lane and Hudspeth aren’t the only new names making waves late in the season. Play-ers like Nick Phillips, Zach Johnson and Don-ovan Smith have been playing increased roles and generating results.

North Surry, Bishop coaches take positive stock of 2010

You never like to lose your last game of the season, but North Surry coach Brian Hamp-ton and Bishop McGuinness Charlie Jones didn’t let playoff defeats Friday night mar their overall view of the 2010 campaign.

Hampton’s Greyhounds went from a 1-10 season in 2009 to an eight-win team this year. Much in the same way, the ‘Hounds fought back to respectability after falling behind

Salisbury 35-7 on Friday .The Greyhounds scored three times after

intermission in the 56-28 loss, keeping the Hornets starters in the game much longer than coaches would have liked.

Joston Phipps rushed for 205 yards for North Surry, scoring three TD’s, including a pair after the break.

“We faced a tough opponent, took our licks early, came back with some counter punches, but we just didn’t have enough in the end,” Hampton told The Mount Airy News after the game.

“I am very proud of my kids. They came out with a completely different attitude in the second half. They never gave up and kept on fighting. We had a great year.”

Bishop McGuinness had the unenviable task of playing Albemarle in its playoff open-er, losing to the long-time 1A power 27-14. Villains coach Charlie Jones liked that his team, which finished in a three-way tie for second place in the conference, pushed Albe-marle to the final whistle.

Bishop pulled within 20-14 after a QB sneak for a touchdown from Nick Sgroi in the third period.

“All season long, we’ve had a formula,” said Jones told The Winston-Salem Journal after the contest. “Run the ball, play defense, take advantage of turnovers, and you have a chance (to win) at the end. We kept hang-ing, kept pushing, and we had a shot at it. I’m proud of this group. We made them work for everything they got. Our people fought to the bitter end.”

COMING THIS WINTER!!

GAME COVERAGEMountain Valley 1A/2A: Elkin 59, Cherokee 19

By Eric LuskMMQ Editor

Elkin running backs galloped for nearly 400 yards, two different quarter-backs threw touchdown passes and the Buckin’ Elks dashed into the second round of the 1A playoffs with a convinc-ing 59-19 win against Cherokee on Fri-day night.

The Elks took command early, find-ing the end zone twice in each quarter and putting up a final score reminiscent of some of the state championship teams from earlier in the decade.

Elkin will play at Robbinsville in next week’s second-round action.

Jordan Coe rushed for two scores in the opening half for the Elks on Friday. Chris Hudspeth caught a touchdown pass from Ethan Creed in the first quar-ter and threw a TD pass to Zach Johnson in the fourth period.

Donovan Smith (55-yard TD run) and Nick Phillips (60-yard TD run) had big scoring plays in the second half to break things open. Johnson and Sam Lane added rushing touchdowns of 14 and 9 yards, keeping stat-keeper Stephen Bracey busy all night.

“For the most part we handled them up front offensively. When you can do that, you can do what you want,” El-kin coach Scott Wood said. “If we had 400 yards I would bet we didn’t have a 100-yard rusher. We spread the wealth. I don’t know who had what. It was a total

team effort.”Elkin took a 14-0 lead in the first

period, but then weathered a mini-run by Cherokee over the final 14 minutes of the half. Spurred by speedy running back Dorian Walkingstick, the Braves tacked on two touchdowns to pull with-in 17-12, missing both conversions.

The Elks struck back quickly though after Walkingstick’s second TD, record-ing two of their own before the break. Coe found the end zone from 5 yards out, while Lane scored on a 9-yard run.

Smith’s 55-yard TD run came in the first minute of the third quarter and pretty much set the tone for the rest of

the night. Johnson rumbled through the heart of the Cherokee defense for a 14-yard touchdown late in the third, push-ing the score to 45-12.

Johnson caught a rollout pass from Hudspeth and turned it into a 42-yard TD reception in the fourth period. Phil-lips’ 60-yard dash down the home side-line capped the Elkin scoring with 2:18 left. Ben Kramm, who hit all seven of his PAT attempts, also made a 29-yard field goal before intermission. Logan Gregory added the final PAT.

The contest marked a coming out par-ty of sorts for some of the Elks’ younger players. Sophomores Lane and Hud-speth spent much of the season on the JV squad but have steadily worked their way into the rotation with the varsity lineup.

“Both of them played a lot tonight,” Wood said. “Sam started and I think Chris was out there a majority of the time. They are two kids who will be relied heavily upon in the future -- two kids we’ve tried to get ready for this point throughout the year.”

Both are versatile performers — who will likely take starting roles for the basketball team when football season is over.

“Chris might play anywhere,” Wood said. “He caught a pass at receiver to-night. He caught a pass at running back tonight. He scored a touchdown from running back tonight. Sam played some receiver, some tailback and Sam started

at outside linebacker.”The Elks’ defense had a goal of pre-

serving the shutout in the second half, and did just that until Walkingstick got away for a 24-yard score with 15.1 ticks on the clock. Walkingstick led all rush-ers with 186 yards on the ground. He was a 2,000-yard rusher during the sea-son.

Cherokee’s season ends at 3-9. Elkin improves to 7-5 and will move on to face a familiar foe in the second round next Friday.

The Elks lost to Robbinsville in last year’s third round and beat Robbinsville two years ago in a similar late-round match-up. The two teams have crossed paths several times in the post-season but typically Elkin has been the host school. This year, the Elks get to make the long journey west. Robbinsville im-proved to 9-3 with a 46-28 win against Rosman on Friday.

“We’re not strangers,” Wood said. “We’ve seen them several times. Pretty much with Coach Walsh, we know what he’s going to do and he knows what we’re going to do.”

Wood got to see Robbinsville some while preparing for Cherokee this past week. One of the Cherokee game tapes submitted to the Elks was a contest against Robbinsville.

“We saw a little bit of them. They are doing a lot of the same things as last year,” Wood said. “I guess it’s fitting that we meet them again.”

GAME COVERAGEMountain Valley 1A/2A: West Wilkes 21, East Wilkes 7 * Wilkes Central 35, West Lincoln 27

By Eric LuskMMQ Editor

West Wilkes will get to rev its Harleys in front of the home fans for at least one more Friday night.

The Blackhawks’ pre-game tradition of bringing the cheerleaders and team onto the field to the roar of Harley Davidson motorcycles gets to continue next week after the ’Hawks beat East Wilkes 21-7 in Friday’s opening round of the 1AA play-offs.

West Wilkes (6-6) will be the home team for round two action by virtue of Mitchell’s upset of higher seeded Cher-ryville. West would have had to travel had Cherryville prevailed. Like the Black-hawks, Mitchell is now 6-6.

East Wilkes, which lost to West Wilkes 14-9 the first time the teams met on Sept. 24, struck first in Friday’s rematch. The Cardinals capped a 14-play, 87-yard drive with a short-yardage Steven Gregory-to-McKinley White touchdown pass.

East was set to get the ball back after a West Wilkes punt with about three min-utes to go in the half. But the Cardinals fumbled on the kick return, and the Black-hawks took over at the East 47. A big pass to Andrew Adams set the ‘Hawks inside the 10-yard line.

Tyler Woods found the end zone a few plays later from 2 yards away. Garrett Hamby’s PAT tied the score 7-7 heading

into halftime.Adams caught a 15-yard TD pass from

Seth Absher for the go-ahead points in the fourth quarter. Absher put some icing on the victory with a quarterback sneak for a score. That play followed a long run from Tommy Pruitt.

Neither team broke 200 yards of total

offense. East Wilkes managed just 125 yards, led by Landon Walker’s 85 rushing yards. The Cardinals endured 90 yards in penalties, threw and interception and fumbled the ball away once.

Pruitt led West Wilkes’ rushing attack with 56 yards on eight carries. Absher completed five of his eight passes for 65

yards and no interceptions. The Black-hawks did not turn the ball over on the night.

* * * *Wilkes Central unleashed the Trae Al-

exander express, and West Lincoln could do little to stop him or the Eagles in Fri-day night’s 2AA state playoff opener.

Alexander rushed for more than 300 yards and recorded five touchdowns to help the Eagles move on to the second round 35-27.

After 0-0 first period, Alexander got the scoring started with a 20-yard scam-per early in the second. West Lincoln an-swered with a touchdown three minutes later but couldn’t stop Alexander on Wil-kes Central’s next possession. Alexander scored on a 53-yard scamper.

The teams went into halftime tied 14-14 after West Lincoln found the end zone on a short run with less than two minutes to play.

Alexander scored twice in the third pe-riod, on runs of 11 and 6 yards, to push the Eagles in front 28-14. West Lincoln got back into contention with a pair of scores early in the fourth period, within a minute of each other.

But after the second TD, West missed the extra point, leaving the Eagles ahead 28-27. Alexander was off to the races again 21 seconds later (43-yard TD run), and the Eagles defense held off a late charge by West to preserve the win.

Wilkes Central was one of two Wilkes teams to win in the playoffs Friday night. West Wilkes beat East Wilkes 21-7 in the 1AA bracket.

Wilkes Central (9-3) will prepare to face Pisgah in second round action next Friday. Pisgah beat Central’s conference partner, Ashe County, 48-14 on Friday.

Austin Drake (East Surry): Helped the Cardinals rally from a 27-6 deficit in the second half, by rushing for 78 yards and touch-down after intermission. The full-

back also had an 85-yard kickoff return for a score after Monroe’s final touchdown.

Trevor Simmons (East Sur-ry): Kicked two first-half field goals of 22 and 33 yards and booted three extra points.

Joston Phipps (North Sur-ry): The 2,000-yard rusher added to his final season tally by gallop-ing for 205 yards and three touch-downs in the loss to Salisbury.

North Stokes defense: The Vikings were the only area team to earn a shutout on opening night of the playoffs.

They Said It“That back had some moves

on him. He wasn’t one to just stand there looking at ya. I give it up to him. He tried to score on every play.” — Salisbury linebacker Travis Byrd, talk-ing about North Surry’s Joston Phipps to The Salisbury Post.

“I get a lot of flak for running Joston so much, but he’s special, and when you’ve got a guy like that, you give him the rock.” North Surry coach Brian Hamp-ton, also quoted in The Salisbury Post.

Photo by Eric LuskJoston Phipps has picked up a Game Ball from Monday Morning Quar-terback most weeks this season. Phipps earned another one with a 205-yard, three-TD performance against Salisbury.
