so dangerous for our environ-ment that any and all use mustcease and desist, immediately.

In the past 10 years Imida-cloprid became the most usedpesticide in the world. Its ma -nufacturer, Bayer CropScience, produces a total of 20,000 tonper year, which is used by agri-culturalists and horticulturalenterprises around the world tocombat insects and plagues thatcan damages plants and crops. The chemical is very poisonousand used on such a large scaleit not only kill undesirable in-sects but also a most non-harm-ful, essential insects.

The University of Utrechtdid an intensive 2- year studyon the impact of this pesticide. The results indicate that thepesticide is culpable for theelimination of other insects thatlive on the water's surface, likethe water butterfly, the waterhorse and shell bugs. All havetheir place in the natural order.

In order to protect the envi-ronment, a new system hasbeen introduced that indicatesthe danger of each pesticideand its acceptable limit inwater; this system should beused accordingly.

The University of Utrechtobtained data indicating thatnot only is the water in certainarea contaminated with Imida-cloprid, but 25.000 times aboveacceptable levels. After obtain-ing this data, the universitycame to the conclusion that inorder to protect our environ-ment, it is imperative to elimi-nate Imidacloprid from theworld market

Taking this into account,Santa Rosa, our local depart-ment of agriculture, livestockand fisheries, opted to changeits stock of insecticide and isnow using and selling organicinsecticides that are not harm-ful for our environment.

Santa Rosa advises all agri-culturists to take notice of thiswhen buying and using insecti-cide.

With every one’s help wecan protect our environment.

ORANJESTAD – Scientistsfrom around the globe re-marked a drastic decrease of in-sects over the past years andare now striving to put a stopon the use of insecticide Imida-cloprid.

Imidacloprid is a systemicinsecticide which acts as an in-sect neurotoxin. It works by in-terfering with the transmissionof stimuli in the insect nervoussystem, resulting in the insect'sparalysis and death

The University of Utrecht inthe Netherlands after an exten-sive study on use of Imidaclo-prid, reported that there is aconnection between the de-crease in insects and use of thepesticide. Consequently, scien-tists are now warning that astrict control on the use of thispesticide is not sufficient. It is

"Anybody who says, 'It'sgoing to be clean. It's going tobe neat. You can establish safezones, and it'll be just swell,'well, most wars aren't thatway," he said.

On Iran, Gates said the bestthe United States can hope foris that sanctions bite deepenough that the regime decidesto change course.

"If there is no military at-tack, and they don't changetheir policies, you will proba-bly see a nuclear-armed Iran ig-niting a nuclear arms race inthe most volatile part of theworld, emboldened to be evenmore aggressive and with mis-siles that can reach Israel nowand Europe soon. But if you dohit them, then I think the conse -quen ces of their retaliationcould spin out of control."

WASHINGTON(AFP) - For-mer US defense secretaryRobert Gates warned yesterdaythat deepening US military in-volvement in Syria's civil warwould be a "mistake," warningthe outcome would be unpre-dictable and messy.

In an interview with CBS-Gates also said he saw "no goodoutcomes" in dealing withIran's nuclear program andwarned that a full US with-drawal from Afghanistan wouldbe "a disastrous mistake."

Gates' comments on Syriacome amid debate in Washing-ton over whether to step upmilitary support for rebelsfighting the regime of PresidentBashar al-Assad, even as theadministration attempts a newpeace initiative with Russia.

Republican lawmakershave charged that Clinton re-fused requests for additionalsecurity from the embassy inLibya in an April 2012 cable.

While she accepted full re-sponsibility for the securityfailure, Clinton has stood bythe internal investigation's find-ing that the embassy's cablesrequesting stepped up securitybefore the attack were seenonly by lower level officials.

Democrats, meanwhile, ac-cused the Republicans of usingthe congressional hearings intothe Benghazi affair to try todamage Clinton, a potentialpresidential candidate in 2016.

Ambassador Thomas Pick-ering said he and retired admi-ral Mike Mullen interviewedClinton near the end of theirinvestigation into the Septem-ber 11 attack in Benghazi butsaw no need to question herabout her role.

He said they knew and un-derstood what she had done"because we had questionedpeople who had attended meet-ings with her what went on atthose meetings and how theywere handled, what was rele-vant.

"I don't believe that it wasnecessary to do that. I don'tthink that there was anythingthere that we didn't know,"Pickering said on CBS' "Facethe Nation" talk show.

Pickering's defense of theprobe came amid accusationsby Republicans that the inves-tigation by the "accountabilityreview board" he and Mullenheaded had left higher-ups offthe hook, holding only lowerlevel officials accountable forthe security failings.

AMMAN (AFP) - The Euro-pean Commission announcedyesterday an additional 65 mil-lion euros ($84 million) in aidfor Syrian refugees and inter-nally displaced, warning thecrisis is "already at breakingpoint".

The announcement came ina statement released to coin-cide with a visit to Syrian re fu -gees in Jordan by humanitarianaid commissioner KristalinaGeorgieva.

"The more atrocities andfighting go on in Syria, themore people run. There are noindications whatsoever thatthis... is going to go down,"Georgieva told AFP after visit-ing the Zaatari refugee camp inJordan's north.

Jordan says it is hostingmore than 500,000 Syrianrefugees and the UNHCR ex-pects that number to soar to 1.2million by the end of 2013 --equivalent to a fifth of thekingdom's population.

"Unless all those involvedin the fighting, as well as theinternational community, finda political solution to the vio-lence very soon the humanitar-ian community will simply beunable to cope with the un-precedented scale of the needs-- we are already at breakingpoint," Georgieva warned inthe statement.

The UN humanitarian of-fice said on Tuesday that thenumber of displaced Syrianshas risen from around two mil-lion people to 4.25 million.

The figures -- combinedwith more than 1.4 million whohave fled abroad -- mean thatmore than a quarter of Syria'spre-war population of 22.5 mil-lion have been forced to quittheir homes since the conflicterupted in March 2011.

The overwhelming majorityof the refugees have fled toneighbouring Lebanon, Tur -key, Iraq and Jordan.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - USresearchers have developed anew test to identify antibod-ies capable of fighting moststrains of HIV, the virus thatcauses AIDS, in a break-through that could acceleratethe hunt for a vaccine.

A report published in thejournal Science on Thursdaysaid that scientists at the Na-tional Institute of Allergy andInfectious Diseases had stud-ied HIV-infected individualswhose blood had shown"powerful neutralization"qualities of the virus.

The new tool allowed sci-entists to precisely determinethe broadly neutralizing anti-bodies in a given sample byanalyzing the neutralizedHIV strains.

The tool -- known as neu-tralization fingerprinting -- isa mathematical algorithmthat taps into the large pool ofdata on HIV bNAbs (broadlyneutralizing antibodies) gen-erated in recent years.

The neutralization finger-print of an HIV antibody al-lows scientists to determinewhich strains of the virus itcan block and how effec-tively it does so.

Previous techniques to yieldthe same information were farslower and "extremely labori-ous," the study said.

PARIS (AFP) - Using a sim-ple smartphone application tophotograph one's meals is auseful slimming aid for theoverweight, according to anexperiment reported on Sun-day.

The app, designed byBritish doctors, aims at pro-moting "food memory" sothat people recall what theyhave eaten and are encour-aged not to snack on high-calorie treats.

there have been rumors that

Amazon is working on a

smartphone. Now, The Wall

that Amazon is actually

working on two.The Journal reported

Thursday that Amazon is"developing a wide-rangingline-up of gadgets," includ-ing two smartphones, one ofwhich will have a 3Dscreen. Citing multipleanonymous sources, theJournal says the 3D-capablesmartphone will not requirespecial glasses and mayeven let users navigate justby moving their eyes.

In addition to the twosmartphone models, Ama-zon is also said to be work-ing on a device forstreaming music and a set-top box, the latter of whichwas also reported byBloomberg BusinessWeeklast month.

Until now, Amazon'shardware efforts have cen-tered around its Kindle e-readers and tablets.

The app has three parts:-- before eating food or

drinking a beverage, the usersnaps a picture of what isabout to be consumed.

-- after finishing the mealor drink, the user then looksat the picture that was taken, and answers questions aboutthe consumption experience:"Did you finish it all?" and"How full are you now?"

-- before further meals, users also look back at thefile of pictures that have beentaken in the course of the day,and get a text message urgingthem to remind themselves ofwhat they have already eaten.

The researchers recruited12 overweight or obese menand women and monitoredthem over four weeks in asmall-scale pilot study. Thevolunteers accessed the appmore than five times a day onaverage, and recorded 2.7daily "episodes" of eating anddrinking.

Over the study period, theparticipants lost 1.5 kilos (3.3pounds) on average.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The

level of carbon dioxide in the

atmosphere has broken above

400 parts per million for the

first time in human history, US

monitors announced this

weekend, indicating a record

level for greenhouse gases.

Climate scientists say that

the symbolic threshold should

serve as a call for action to

begin reversing the damage

caused to the environment by

human activities and heavy

use of polluting fossil fuels.

The Earth has not seen

these levels of CO2 in millions

of years, long before humans

existed, said Bob Ward, policy

and communications director

at the Grantham Research In-

stitute on Climate Change and

the Environment at London

School of Economics and Po-

litical Science.

"We are creating a prehis-

toric climate in which human

societies will face huge and

potentially catastrophic risks,"

said Ward.

"Only by urgently reducing

global emissions will we be

able to bring carbon dioxide

levels down and avoid the full

consequences of turning back

the climate clock."

Data showing that the daily

average CO2 over the Pacific

Ocean was 400.03 ppm as of

May 9 was posted online by

the National Oceanic and At-

mospheric Administration's

monitoring center in Mauna

Loa, Hawaii.

A separate monitor at the

Scripps Institution of

Oceanography in San Diego,

California initially reported its

May 9 data showing that at-

mospheric carbon dioxide was

at 399.73 ppm, but later re-

vised that to show 400.08

ppm.

The difference came down

to time zone, with NOAA

using the universal time clock

and Scripps reporting on

Hawaii time. When Scripps

adjusted its measurements to

UTC time, it concurred with

NOAA that 400 ppm thresh-

old had been breached.

Michael Mann, director of

the Earth System Science

Center at Penn State, said the

main concern is the speed

with which the concentrations

of CO2 are rising.

"There is no precedent in

Earth's history for such an

abrupt increase in greenhouse

gas concentrations," Mann,

who has authored two books

on climate change, told AFP.

"While living things can

adapt to slow changes that

took place over tens of mil-

lions of years, there is no rea-

son to believe that they -- and

we -- can adapt to changes that

are a million years faster than

the natural background rates

of change."

Mann said the last time sci-

entists are confident that CO2

was sustained at the current

levels was more than 10 mil-

lion years ago, during the mid-

dle of the Miocene Period.

Back then, global tempera-

tures were hotter, ice was

sparse and sea level was

dozens of meters higher than

it is today.

"It took nature hundreds of

millions of years to change

CO2 concentrations through

natural processes such as nat-

ural carbon burial and vol-

canic outgassing," Mann said.

"What we are doing is un-

burying it. But not over 100

million years. We're unbury-

ing it and burning it over a

timescale of 100 years, a mil-

lion times faster."

from Iberian black pigs --which are indigenous toSpain -- to distinguish themfrom less expensive hamsmade from lower qualitypork from white pigs.

"They are nothing likeeach other," said Ramon Es-tevez, who is in charge ofquality control at renownedSpanish ham producer Beher.

He gazed at the herd ofpigs grazing in a field nearthe village of Guijuelo about200 kilometres (120 miles)west of Madrid in theprovince of Salamanca.

"Iberian pigs produceoleic acid, which is similar tothat found in olive oil. Noother animal in the worlddoes this," he said, addingthis gives pork productsmade from the animal a moreintense taste.

The pigs feed exclusivelyon acorns between Novemberand March.

During the rest of the yearthey eat cereals since it is notpossible to store acorns forlong after they are harvested.

The acorns give the fat ofthe pigs its unique, sweetflavour. Cured ham madefrom Iberian black pigs cancost over 100 euros ($130)per kilo and as much as 4,000euros for a whole leg of hamthat has been slowly curedfor over seven years.

But due to the economicdownturn farmers have dras-tically reduced their herdsfrom four million pigs threeyears ago to just two and ahalf million today.

-- As special 'as goodcaviar or foie gras' --

"The pure acorn-fed Iber-ian ham is one of the world'smost special products, suchas good caviar or good foiegras," said Alejandra Anson, the head of Elite Gourmet, anon-profit foundation that af-fixes a seal of quality on topSpanish products.

"This is something veryspecial that Spain does not

know how to sell."There are currently eight

different denominations of ori-gin for cured ham made fromIberian black pigs. Officialsfear this will confuse con-sumers and allow some pro-ducers to take advantage of theuncertainty to mislead them.

The top label is given toham made from the Iberianpigs which put on at least 45kilos during their finalmonths of life by eating justacorns.

"It is unthinkable to try toenter international marketswith eight different types ofham," said Fernando Burgas, the director general for thefood industry at the agricul-ture ministry which plans toreduce the number of denom-inations of origin to three.

As he strolled through hissprawling warehouse where100,000 hams were hangingto dry in the arid air of Gui-juelo, Arturo Sanchez praisedthe "hard to match quality" ofpure Iberian ham.

Like Beher, which sellsaround 30 percent of its pro-duction abroad, Sanchez iscounting on exports to sup-port the family brand thatbears his name and which hasbeen produced since 1917.

Sanchez fears the govern-ment's plans to reduce thenumber of denominations oforigin may not do enough toprotect the product's toprange.

He thinks it is up to hisfamily business "to fight toassert our quality".

The exquisite cured hamcalled Jamon Iberico madefrom this breed, which is al-lowed to roam freely to dineon acorns, is the star of Span-ish cuisine and it can be soldfor astronomical prices.
