The Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race (Vic-Maui) has successfully been completed again. Just as it has since the founding

of the Lahaina Yacht Club all the way back in 1965. This race is one of the reasons we exist as a club and is one event that makes

Lahaina Yacht Club a “world-class” club. Every time we host this race there are challenges, but these pale in comparison to the

challenges undertaken by the sailors who brave the 2308 nautical miles of Open Ocean to compete. We have lots in common with

the racers; preparation, planning, long hours with crazy sleep schedules. We challenge ourselves to make these adventurous souls

feel true Aloha when they arrive. The comments from the participants generally held that this was one of the best Vic-Maui races

ever, with the exception of the weather on the course that is. Here on land we were thrown a few curve balls; banquet venue

changes, dock party restrictions and the like, but we managed to hit one out of the park with the power of the dedicated folks who

Aloha All,

Here we are again, time just flies by these days. These past 2 months have most certainly been busy for a lot of people with the preparations for Vic Maui. We again had a very successful event thanks to so many volunteers. I had the oppor-tunity to be at the start in Victoria as were a lot of LYC members and hope to be there again in 2016. There were a lot of last minute changes this year with the ever changing rules and regula-tions from state and county, but we managed to put it together with the help of Pioneer Inn for our greetings and Starwood Ho-tels for our banquet, so thanks to both. I would like input from everyone that attended so we can better prepare for 2016. We have already selected the future committee and are working on the 2016 events in order to better the experience for everyone. September and October are looking busy with the usual La-bor Day weekend festivities. If you haven’t attended famous our softball game before, I recommend you do as this is one of our greatest events of the year. September 13-14 we have our an-nual Dinsmoor Trophy competing against Oahu clubs and as always we are looking for volunteers, so come on out and be part of the fun. Halloween is also around the corner with the big-gest fishing tournament we have seen for years. The Jackpot and the Halloween Shootout will be held the same day so any-one can enter one or both. I think the prize money will be huge for the biggest fish for those that enter both tournaments. As usual we have our annual golf tournament under the leadership of John Pope, with the main beneficiary being Hospice Maui. I know it may seem early but elections are coming up before you know it. Should you have an interest in being on the board, please start preparing your resume. Our office will have the requirements and procedure should you need it. I have had my arm twisted so will be putting my name down again for Commodore. With this be-ing my third year I think I need counseling for doing that. I haven’t set the dates for nomination and election/general membership meeting yet so please stay tuned should you have an interest. A new event we are planning is the (1st) annual Commodore’s Cup scheduled for November 15th. So stay tuned for that if you want to come and laugh at all of us old folks competing for the Cup. With all this being said, please enjoy our busy summer of events.

See you in the club or on the water.

May your boat be leak free. May your sails be in good repair, and your engine start. May the winds be fair, the weather kind and May your days be filled with the exquisite pleasure of new adven-tures, fabulous destinations and excellent friendship.

A BIG MAHALO TO THE BYRNE FAMILY

We recently made a donation in memory of our parents, to fund two (2) RS Feva XL boats for the Junior Sailing Program. At the time, Stacie, the Club Secretary commented, “Your par-ents must have really loved sailing”. The story is really quiet different. Our mother was born and raised in Honolulu, our father in San Francisco. They met, and married, in San Fran-cisco in 1946. However, the connection to Hawaii remained strong. Beginning with their honeymoon, they traveled often to Hawaii. When they purchased a condo on Maui in 1982, their trips became more frequent as they considered Maui their second home. They joined the Lahaina Yacht Club in 1983, though their enjoyment of being on the water had been via cruise ship, not sailboat. In joining LYC, Mom and Dad found their favorite place on Maui. They continued to enjoy the privileges of membership for almost 30 years, and equally enjoyed sharing “their yacht club” with family and friends. Though our parents were not sailors, they loved Maui and the Lahaina yacht Club in particular. It is for that reason that we have made this donation to the Junior Sailing Program.

We wish them “Fair winds and following seas” “Aloha; Peawini e hahai wai”

Aloha!

I trust you all have been enjoying your summer thus far. It has been a busy one at LYC with lots of sailing activity; Junior sail-ing, Summer Big Boat Regattas, Laser Series racing and the just completed Vic-Maui race. The Vic-Maui race is certainly one of Lahaina Yacht Club’s “Signature Events” and is an exciting and important event for our Club.

By all accounts the Vic-Maui race was very successful which only happened because a group of LYC Members volunteered their time to make it happen. Without the volunteers, there would be no Vic-Maui so a huge “Mahalo” for everyone that dedicated their time and effort to this important Club event.

Seeing the dedication of the Vic Maui volunteers made me think of why does it always seems to be the same people do-ing the volunteering? Why don’t more people volunteer? This is not just at LYC, it’s in all organizations where a small group of people seem to do all the volunteer work. Maybe there is a misconception of what being a volunteer means. By defi-nition, a volunteer is a person who freely offers to undertake a task and perform a service willingly and without pay. While this does describe what volunteers do, I believe it doesn’t pull through the whole story on what I think is the coolest part of being a volunteer and that’s being part of a team. I grew up playing sports and valuing what it meant to be on a team. You had a role to play but you knew you were part of something bigger and if you worked hard as part of that team, you reaped the rewards. Whether that was as simple as being in on a great play or winning a championship, I always felt a great sense of accomplishment in what was achieved with a group of people who were all focused on the same goal. I loved the camarade-rie and the fun that came with being part of a team.

Once my high school and college athletic career ended, I truly missed being on a team. I had done it my whole life and while I went on in my professional career to be part of teams, it still wasn’t the same as it used to be....after all it was work! For me, LYC has given me an opportunity to be back on teams and allows me to focus on my love of sailing and the ocean so I am excited to volunteer for the Lahaina Yacht Club. I’m having fun! Here is where I ask you to rethink and look at being a volun-teer. It’s about being on a team with people who embrace the challenge and find a great sense of satisfaction accomplishing goals while having fun. I find that a lot of us get in a “rut” here on Maui; we do the same thing week after week, month after month and get lulled into complacency. If you feel that way then come be a volunteer at LYC...be part of a team and have fun doing it! Whether you commit to a weekend or to 2 years (that’s a Vic Maui committee) LYC needs your help but more importantly, do it because you want to be part of a team that gives you that true sense of accomplishment while at the same time having more fun than you thought!

So you want to volunteer at LYC? There are plenty of opportu-nities. The next Vic-Maui is in 2016 and we are already begin-ning to look at organizing Committees right now. There is the Golf Tournament and Junior Sailing’s Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta in September, the Keiki Fishing Tournament, the Jackpot and Wahine Fishing Tournaments, become a Boomvanger or run for the BOG! There are a lot of opportunities for you as a Mem-ber of the LYC to step up and make a difference and be part of a Team and help to keep moving The Lahaina Yacht Club forward! If I have piqued your interest and you’d like to learn more about volunteering at the LYC, please contact me at: [email protected]

Aloha Lahaina Yacht Club Ohana,

It is difficult to believe that August is upon us. Summer at the Club is typically action packed. This summer proved no differ-ent. It is wonderful to walk into the Club early in the morn-ing and see the sailing lessons taking place. The Junior Sailing team has done a wonderful job developing and expanding the program. We are looking forward to another successful Dins-moor Regatta that is just around the corner.

In early June the Boomvangers Scholarship Committee enjoyed lunch with this year’s scholarship recipients. It was a great way to get to know these amazing young adults. I hope the luncheon becomes a new tradition for the Boomvangers. The scholarships we give out are a direct result of your generosity and support of our various fundraisers.

Stay tuned for dates for the 3rd annual fall gift show. It is the perfect time to do some Christmas shopping while supporting a great cause. Ten percent of the vendors’ sales are donated to Keiki Christmas. We will have our regular vendors who we love, and look forward seeing their new goods, as well as some new vendors. If you or someone you know would like to participate in the event please contact me ([email protected]).

As the Club begins celebrating its 50th anniversary Boomvan-gers activities and events will be centered around the celebra-tion.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer and be sure to join us at the annual softball game August 31st.

ANNOUNCING BUY A BAR STOOL FUNDRAISER

As most members are already aware that the Club has pur-chased 20 new bar stools to replace the old ones that are twenty plus years old and were constantly in need of repair.

The LYC Foundation has initiated a Buy a Bar Stool fun-draiser for a donation of $1,000 per stool. The money raised will go to support the many programs that the Club has to offer programs such as Junior Sailing, Schol-arships and other club activities without having to raise membership dues in order to support these programs

For a $1,000 donation to the LYC Foundation the donor will have his or her name engraved into a stainless steel name plate 10” X 2” that will be attached to a barstool and will remain there as long as the stool is in use. “This does not give the donor exclusive use of the stool” REMEM-BER THERE ARE ONLY 20 STOOLS. Contact Brian Blundell at [email protected], or Dan Seals at [email protected] with your generous contribution or drop it off at LYC Office.

MEMBERS ONLY: Max number letters including spaces 22, No commercial advertising.

LYC Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Organization that could Let you use this donation as a tax deduction as allowed for by the IRS. Consult your tax adviser to determine your par-ticular situation.

The eons-old saying about a boat being a hole in the water that needs to be filled up with money is still holds true today. The only variable is how big is the boat/hole.

The Open Bics we use for Junior Sailing classes and the Junior Sail-ing Team are very tough. Unlike the Sabots we previously used, you can beat the hulls with a hammer and not do any damage. That does not, however, apply to the film sails.

The film sails work very well, look cool and give the sailors plenty of visibility so they can see what’s going on around them while underway.

With all of the use the Bics get we’ve been seeing the sails last for about two years. We determined that having sails fabricated out of a longer lasting material would be more cost effective than buying new sails from Bic.

We cast around for quite some time trying to find someone that could both design a sail and have it built. Geoff Bourne got in-volved with the Junior Program and has designed and produced our new club sails. Anyone who sails in Maui waters knows Geoff. He’s been in the sailing business for years and has, in my opinion, the nicest sailboat in the Lahaina Harbor.

Geoff listened to our needs, took an old sail to measure, found a loft to make the sails and SHAZAMM, we have sixteen of the cool-est sails I’ve ever seen on a small boat! If Batman had a sailboat he’d be using these sails.

The kids who have sailed them report they have more power, are quiet, easier to rig and put away, and they are totally cool looking. Your treasurer likes them because they cost one third less than the factory Bic sails and should last three times as long. A total win-win in my book.

Aloha Members,

I hope you all had fun with the Vic-Maui this year. There were a lot of differences in the greeting parties and I liked it. Due to the DLNR we had to move the parties into the Pioneer Inn’s Snung Harbor room for most parties. There was a night were 3 boats came in right in a row and the party was in the bar. What a fun night. Please go and support the Pioneer Inn for all they did for us. They made the event parties happen. If it wasn’t for Jim and Becky Lennon, we wouldn’t have been able to do the greetings in such a nice venue. So from me, I give Jim and Becky a “BIG MAHALO!!!”

Now that the Vic-Maui is pau, we get to look forward to the Labor Day Fun. We have softball practices on Wednesday at 4:45. If you have any questions please call coach Chuck Dicker at 397-3151. We have a good team started, but can always use more members to get out and have some fun. It’s always hot out there and fresh bodies are faster then over heated ones. We have a practice game with the Coast Guard on the August 24 at 10 AM and all members are invited to come down and support your team and the Coast Guard. We love the Coast Guard! They are there when you need them. Go Coast Guard. After the game we will have a get together at the club with the CG and the Navy League. As always, with Melissa, Sunday is Fun day!

We are also planning a new member mixer. So, like us on La-haina Yacht Club’s Facebook page to keep in the loop. If you don’t do Facebook we will be sending out a LYC email newslet-ter with more info.

That’s it for now. See you at the club.SkeeterPort Captain

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS June & July

Sherian Bender Williams and David Williams Sherian & Dave knew each other for 22 years before marriage (a long and tumultuous courtship!). Sherian first joined LYC as an associate member in 1975. By 1977 she was in full tilt and full membership. Arriving on Maui from Newport, CA she became Social Director of the Sheraton Maui and now contin-ues her long career in real estate. She and husband Dave (past Commodore) reside in Kaanapali Plantation along with past Commodores Steve Taylor & Steve Tenney. Sherian and Dave continue to be very active members at LYC. You will always see them, in full regalia, at our festive and signature events. Currently Sheri-an presides as Chair of the Membership Committee and also represents their collective experience as a committee representative for our 50th anniversary celebration. Dave served our BOG for a total of 11 years (2 as Commodore). He was a resident of Hawaii when it was a Territory. As a former Navy Seebee, he enjoyed a career as a licensed contractor building homes here on Maui. He then “retired” to pursue his lifelong passion, sailing- and opened his charter business in Lahaina Harbor in 1978. Currently “boatless”, having sold “Holy Moses” 3 months ago, Dave and Sherian continue to represent LYC and draw on their combined experience with Vic Maui & race committee, they are a treasure house of information and set standards by example.

Bo Petty & Judy LauridisenBo & Judy, from California and Indiana re-spectively, are active and giving members of our LYC community. Bo holds a degree in Marine Biology & is currently the Vol-unteer Coordinator Westside for NOAA & the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Judy, his charming wife was an ER Nurse for 13 years and now works as a medical reviewer for health care plans. They met at a country western dance, married and as their realtor/friend-ship with Lori and Bobby Powers progressed, they joined our club in 2008. You will often see them on the dance floor, and their volunteer presence is awesome! Aloha Fishing Community:

It’s that time of year again as we plan for the 2014 Lahaina Jack-pot and Keiki Fishing Tournaments in the upcoming months!

Aloha from your little Galley that does:

The last two months have just sailed by. We started the month of July with an all American buffet for the 4th of July. Ribs, fried chicken, salads and rhubarb pie. The end of July was the greeting of the Boats from the Vic-Maui race. The LYC staff took the “Best greeting for Commercial” Award.

Next event will be the “Night under the Burgees” Lahaina wine gala fundraiser raising money for Hospice Maui. I will be pairing some delicious food with wines from the Methven’s Winery. Remember to reserve well in advance for all spe-cial events nights, they are a hot commodity and fill up quick!

We’ve made some exciting changes in the galley. We switched our rye bread from a caraway rye bread to a thicker marbled rye bread. This bread holds up better on the grill, with the juicy sauerkraut and looks great on the plate.

There is a new flank steak pupu that is marinated in a house made French dressing, grilled and served with a horserad-ish blue cheese dipping sauce. The flank steak also tastes great on a salad.

TIP FROM THE GALLEY:

Wash and dry your limes well. Wrap each lime indi-vidually in tin foil, the limes will last 3x longer.

The restaurant has had a good year in sales thus far! In turn, we prepare for the 50th Anniversary in 2015 plus the Clubhouse needs repairs and updates in the restaurant to comply with the new Health Department regulations.

The 4th of July celebration was a success with two din-ning seatings 5:O0PM and 7:O0PM which worked great! Members and guests enjoyed the patriotic firework show to music on the upper deck, seatting nearly 80 people. In mid July, the Club was happening with many big par-ties as we greeted and welcomed the Vic-Maui Crews and their guests. August is busy with wedding par-ties on the books which is great to see brides and grooms starting their marriage at Lahaina Yacht Club!

Then we have our annual softball game against Oahu yacht clubs, plus hosting the Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta and our an-nual Gala/Golf fundraiser which all begins over Labor Day through the end of September. The Golf tournament will be held Saturday September 27 with an 8am shotgun at Ka-palua Bay Course followed by a lunch buffet at the Club. This is our 25th Annual Golf Tournament and over the years we have donated roughly $234K to help patients on Maui; this year the main beneficary is Hospice Maui! As always, we appreciate the support! We extend a special Mahalo to Sea Breeze Properties for being a Burgee Sponsor! For details on our gala/golf event contact the office or email [email protected]

We hope to see you on the greens!JP

Ladies and Gentlemen, mark your calendar for a semi-formal evening, “A Night Under the Burgee’s” held Friday night, September 26th at 5:30pm! Reservations are required in advance for this elegant evening with entertainment and a 3-course wine dinner fea-turing Methven’s wine! Thank you to our member and Burgee Sponsor, Methven Family Vineyard for their generous contribtuion!

The Gala will feature an auction and we ask our members and friends, to donate an item(s) in support of Hospice Maui and the LYC Foundation. Last year we raised $13K to give to Hospice Maui and we hope to make this annual gala night the best year yet! On page 13, is a Contribution Form, ways one can PARtake in our weekend of giving even if you’re off island! Thank you in advance to contribute to our weekend of giving!

VICE COMMODOREMike Masterson

CELEBRATING VIC-MAUI: AN INTERNATIONAL YACHT PARTY IN LAHAINA

L-R: Rich Ballantyne (Techniqual Committee), David Sutcliffe (2014 Vic-Maui Chair), Robert Forsyth (RVYC Commodore),

Lars Bertelsen (LYC Commodore), Dan O’Hanlon (2014 Vic-Maui Chair)

Here on land we were thrown a few curve balls; banquet venue

changes, dock party restrictions and the like, but we managed to hit one out of the park with the power of the dedicated folks who

volunteered their time to make the 2014 Vic-Maui the biggest and best event this club has had in years. Mahalo for all of your

support and get ready for the celebration in 2016!

Dan O’Hanlon, 2014 Vic-Maui Chair
