As most of you know I am expecting a new addition to my family in the beginning of November. I wanted to alert you that I will be on a medical leave until the end of January. Although I hate to be away for such a long period of time, I do look forward to spending time with my girls. Program Specialist, Lisa Timberlake will be the program’s primary contact. I trust that Lisa and the AE staff will continue to run our amazing program in my absence. I hope to see you all around the holiday’s and will keep you posted on baby girls arrival! ~Alisha

Ben Walker October is another month with two birthstone choices – Tourmaline and Opal. TOURMALINE Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone among jewelry designers, and gem collectors the world over. Since it is available in a wide variety of colors, it is ideally suited to almost anyone's taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone. These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized. One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA. OPAL The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning "to see a change (of color)." Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue. An opal's beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background. Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature's heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance.

The calendula, pretty and practical, is the Birth Month Flower of October. Calendulas grew their name from blooming at the beginning of each month, hence the Latin "calends" and the English "calendar." The calendula means "throughout the months." This flower is used by many gardeners as an insect repellent and by cooks as a spicy seasoning or coloring for food. Dried, the calendula can spice up and brighten up a salad. In fact, this flower is referred to as the "pot marigold" because of cooking pots, not flowerpots. As if these weren't enough uses for the calendula, this flower can be used as many herbal medicinal remedies for headaches, toothaches, stomachaches, fever reducers and menstrual cramps. It can reduce swelling in insect bites, sprains, jaundice, sore eyes, wounds and other skin irritations when the calendula is made into an ointment. Lip balms can be made to soothe chapped lips as well. The calendula's bright colors ranging from gold to bright orange have also been boiled to make brilliant dyes for fabrics, cosmetics and food. The calendula, or marigold (referred to as "Mary's Gold" by early Christians), was considered a sacred flower. Garlands of marigolds were crafted and strung around the necks of the holy saint statues

On Friday September 6/13 we were invited to tour the Barnstormers Clipper Magazine Stadium. We started the tour in the fantastic Wheatland suite, full of pinball machines that over looked the field. We walked out onto the field of dreams and had our picture taken. For lunch we had hot dogs, chips, water and a chocolate chip cookie. During lunch we had a visit from the manger, announcer, and a few players. We ended our day touring the press Box and shopping at the gift store.

Christine Ferreira from WGAL8 came for a visit. We liked the way she explained how she tracks the weather. We liked the way she tracks different kinds of weather. We felt she was very knowledgeable about the weather. One thing that we learned that there is no such thing as heat lighting “who knew!” She showed us a slide show about how the news room works. We enjoyed the information on tornados, Hurricanes and hail.

Contributed by Jennifer Riddle Guest speaker David Minnich brought in a bee colony in a glass box and discussed the different kinds of bees in the colony. He shared a lot of information about the bees. Then he gave us papers and he explained a lot about the paper. Then he put on two videos of bees that explained why bees are dying. We got to try on the bee keepers hat.

Starburst has different flavors of candy. Cherry, orange, lemon and strawberry. There are skittles and they are good because they taste fruity. Tootsie rolls are very good. They are chocolate. Kit Kat bars are crunchy and good, All assorted candy bars are delicious. Starburst are my favorite but I like Hershey Kisses, too.

"The Breakfast Club” Contributed

By John McFarland This months movie review is about the movie "The Breakfast Club". When Saturday detention started, they were simply the Jock, the Princess, the Brain, the Criminal, and the Basket Case. But by that afternoon, they had become closer then any of them could of imagined. Featuring an all stars 80's cast Emilio Estevez, Anthony-Micheal Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheety. This warm hearted coming of age comedy from writer/director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, Weird Science) helped define an entire generation.I recommend seeing this movie, however I do caution that this film contains a lot of swearing.

My mom was born in Boston, Massachusetts. I would love to visit Boston one day to see my mom’s birth place. It is very pretty there and I would fly on a plane to get there. Going on an end of summer vacation is nice. My family recently went to our beach house. There are many things to do there. One day, I walked up the board walk. Another day I went to the Art League in Rehoboth beach. The weather was nice. The next day we went to the Indian River Museum and Life Saving Station. We also drove to Milton, Delaware and visited a church museum. We went to Lewes Ferry to pick up a friend and went to the Cannonball house. We went to Baywood Restaurant for lunch. My mom and I went to see a play, The Sound of Music. We went to a restaurant for dinner. We had a good vacation and it was a fun way to finish our summer.

Look who came to Adult Enrichment... On August 13, Jennifer Petry and her 11-year-old daughter Elena came in to play their cellos for our Music Appreciation class. Jennifer teaches those who are born without limbs how to play, including Elena who plays the cello with her feet. (Jennifer also taught George Dennehy, the up-and-coming musician who recently played with the Goo Goo Dolls, to play guitar with his feet). Here is what some participants who were there said about Jen & Elena's concert -- Robert: “I was surprised; it kind of woke us up!” Dewey: “It was incredible how she learned how to play with her feet”. Angie: “I thought it was nice to see how people can still do stuff who have a disability.” Jon R: I liked her feet! Kate: It was inspiring for all of us to see. Laura: “I thought it was neat that she travels to different places [to learn and to teach].”

Through the Eyes of his Friends

My friend, Ben, he is a fabulous singer; he can really hit those low- notes. I think he is a real cool guy. I've read his poetry before, and really enjoyed it. He really is a great-reader and speller. If you do not know how to spell anything, just ask Ben or if you do not know what a certain word means, just ask Ben. I've heard he volunteers at an Animal-Shelter, handing out treats to the animal's, I think that's really considerate and It shows he cares about others. Ben is really kind, knows a lot of jokes, puns, & riddles. He is also energetic, thoughtful, and friendly. According to Lynary, “Ben is a good actor, a cool very nice man, funny and good at cheering me up. I know his parents, and they are wonderful too.” Bill says “Ben is a calm, cool, and collective person. And is easy to get along with. Ben, Ben, he's our man- if he can't do it, no one can!!” According to Stephanie “Ben is smart and can recite the alphabet backwards without a problem! Ben is nice and a good poet too.” Derek also believes “Ben is nice and very polite.” Gary stated “Ben is always smiling.” Scott reports that “Ben is a good gentleman to know.” Robyn expresses that “Ben is a caring, outgoing, and overall a good guy.” Dmitri, Colleen, and Jayann agreed that “Ben is funny, friendly, and helpful.” As we can see Ben is a well rounded and respected fellow. I hope you learned a little about our dear friend Ben by reading this and maybe you will have the opportunity to get to know him a little better.

RED RAVEN ART COMPANY On Saturday September 7th Adult Enrichment had an art show at the red raven gallery in downtown Lancaster. We all had a great time painting, and preparing for the show. All of our hard work paid off, it was fun getting to see our work hung up. Art is an opportunity to show others what we see in the world. It also shows others what we can accomplish through creativity.
