The children, by some miracle, have grown into responsible adults. By chance you overhear your now grown-up son telling the same

you so long ago told him, and the tears fall silently down your cheeks. Don’t despair – these are the pearls of parenting, and that is what the game is all about.

MOM'S

TRIVIAL PURSUIT FOR MOTHERHOOD I’ve often thought that mothering is similar to Trivial Pursuit.

It seems we spend much of our time in a maze of trivia, fumbling through the daily minutiae of family living, never quite sure

whether we’re ahead of the game or not. The rules are simple – you’ll start with 10 marbles, and collect or deduct marbles as

you play the game. Are you ready? Okay, let’s go…

You are awaiting the arrival of your

look at your expanding waistline and say, “As

soon as the baby is born I’ll be a size 6 again,” deduct 2

marbles - for wishful thinking.

1

It is two years later and your second child is soon to be born. To avoid sibling rivalry you have prepared carefully for the event, spending “quality time” with your

doll to feed, bathe and cuddle. When the new baby comes

deduct 1 marble – it’s the dog who’s jealous.

Your eldest son has just announced at the supper

table that he is to be an oak tree in the school play and needs a

costume by tomorrow morning. If you stay up until 3am making an imaginative and

innovative costume, deduct 3 marbles for setting an impossible example for the rest of us. On the other hand, if you stick him

into a brown paper bag with a hole for his head and arms and tape green leaves all

over the front and back, collect 5 marbles. You’ve just taken the rest of us

off the hook.

The kids, now number three and all

in school. You have discovered that

“mother” is synonymous with “taxi

service”. On a typical day you drop

the youngest off at her music lesson,

then go with the boys to their Soccer

practice. Then back to pick up daughter

and drop accumulated soccer players

off at their assorted homes. It’s dinner at choir practice at 7pm.

Collect 5 marblesfor endurance.

The little darlings are embarrassed to be seen with you. Guess what: You are the parent of teenagers,

those strange creatures who think they are eight feet tall and

bulletproof. If you survive this age with your sense intact, collect 8

Until then, always remember that you hold the ultimate

weapon – you have the car keys!

You can tell your oldest child is home from college when you see the pile of dirty laundry in the front hall.

If you take the clothes downstairs to sort, wash and press as in the old days…deduct

3 marbles and shame on you! If, instead, you take him by the hand and show him the room

where the automatic washer and dryer have been housed since he was small, collect 5

marbles. Some of the most important things in life are not taught in college, you know.

SHOPPING AT SONPARK FOR SECOND HAND SUNSHINE

Peek-a-boo collects, buys and sells pre-loved and new children toys and accessories including prams, cots, high chairs and other furniture and equipment.

The owner, Louisa Lubbe, says that the idea for the shop was 'born' when her husband mentioned that it would be great to sell the things their 18 month old daughter was growing out of, and then buy bigger second hand things that has hardly been used.

She jumped at the chance to realise a lifelong dream of living out her creative side. A few months later, she openend her shop called "Peek a Boo". Louisa's vision for the shop was to create a "welcome" space. The atmosphere is friendly and endearing. She would like to encourage moms to come and sell their pre-used children stuff, and in a way, help other moms who can't afford to buy new, but perhaps can afford to buy what they want at a more affordable price.

She invites you, the readers of Mom's Notes to come and have a peek at what they have available, or to allow them to sell those pre-loved stuff which you perhaps didn't know what to do with.

You don't need to spend a lot of

money on craft equipment for

your kids.

Pictures from old magazines can be cut out and used for projects such as collage. Another fun project is have the children make up their own face, pick a nose off one page, eyes from another and so on. Lots of fun laughing!

Krap deur jou ou naaldwerk kassie vir ou knope, stukkies wol of afval lappies.

A store cupboard item you can use for crafting with young children is dried pasta such as penne. Help them thread it onto string to make a long necklace or picture.

Maak jou eie speelklei Plaas 1 koppie water 1 koppie koekmeel

1/2 koppie sout2 teelepels kook olie

Stoor in 'n lugdigte houer.

Lolly or Popsicle sticks, washed and dried, can be made into many interesting objects such as doll's furniture.

The beach is another good place to gather materials. Small shells can be glued onto plain trinket boxes or picture frames to make highly individual gifts.

TIRED OF YOUR CHILDREN ALWAYS BEING SICK DURING THE WINTER MONTHS… REMEMBER: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN

TEN TIPS TO HELP BOOST YOUR CHILD’S IMMUNE SYSTEM:

1. Vitamin CVitamin C increases the production of infection-

the entry of viruses. Vitamin C supplements are inexpensive and Vitamin C is available in a natural form in many fruits and vegetables. Aim for at least three Vitamin C rich fruits every day Vitamin C boosting fruits: Kiwi, papaya. Orange, guava, strawberries

2. Vitamin E. Vitamin E stimulates the production of natural killer cells, those that seek out and destroy germs. Aim for 30 -60mg every day of Vitamin E from a diet rich in seeds, vegetable oils, variety of nuts and whole grains. Make sure you include nuts as an afternoon

7. Probiotics:These are healthy bacteria that live in our intestines and help to protect the body through immune enhancement. The best species of probiotics are lactobacillus and

a healthy body. Probiotics are available in liquid, powder, and capsules suitable for children and infants, take as directed. Always take with prescription of Antibiotics and continue for a week after completion of Antibiotic dose. Good to take during the winter months to boost the immune system.

8. Reduce intake of sugar and sweets:Sugar has an immune- suppressing effect. Cut back, if not totally eliminate sweets. Instead, give them healthy snacks like fresh and dried fruit. Don’t forget their serving of vegetables everyday.

9. Sleep:Make sure your child sleeps a full night. This is one of the “must-do” for anyone who wants to boost their immune system. The immune system is only strong if the body remains strong. Your child needs enough rest to maintain their physical strength.

10. Exercise:Let them go out and play. We all know exercise is important. It’s helpful if you play with them. Not only are you fostering a closer family bond, you’re also getting a workout yourself.

LEER SKOOL

BUSY BODIES What to do:

Roadside

EMERGENCY

SAFETY SHOULD BE YOUR MAIN CONCERN

fuel tank forces you to stop driving, the most important thing is to take actions that ensure your safety. Here are some tips from the auto experts at Consumer Reports.

GET OFF THE ROADPull your vehicle as far off of the road as safely

you can safely walk to another location, do it. If the vehicle is parked on the shoulder of a busy highway, exit on the passenger side. Lock the door and leave a note on the windshield in case roadside assistance or the police stop by the vehicle.

MAKE YOUR VEHICLE AS VISIBLE AS POSSIBLEAt the minimum, turn on the hazard lights as soon as you realize that your vehicle is slowing down. Once stopped, use any warning signals

warning light—to alert other motorists of your vehicle's presence. Place the warning device as far behind your car as practical to give other motorists as much notice as possible.

DISPLAY A DISTRESS SIGNALIf you need police help, raise the hood or tie a white cloth to the radio antenna or door handle, or hang the cloth out of the top of the door and close it on the cloth.

KEEP THE DOORS LOCKEDIf the vehicle is in a safe location, you should wait inside. But keep the doors locked and your safety belt fastened.

EXERCISE CAUTIONUse good judgment in accepting help from strangers. If someone of whom you're suspicious stops, lower the window only enough to talk. If you're waiting for help, thank them for stopping but tell them you're OK. If you need help, ask them to make a call for you

BOU HAAR SELFVERTROUE

KrisishanteringDit is 'n aangeleerde vaardigheid.
