Inspired by family and dr iven by ideas , I have decided to dedicate this edition to families and their legacies . Family is the most impor tant par t of l i fe , without love and suppor t we would be lost . Creating memories is such an impor tant thing, in this edition we share a few of our local mom’s memories on page 84. Cora Brey tenbach shares some ideas for building family memories and a dear fr iend and true inspiration to us all , Felici ty Lange shares her passion for l i fe and her love for her family. Congratulations to Felici ty and Lesley who have just become grandparents for the 6th time, welcome to the wor ld Baby Blum! I would like to encourage you to stop for a l i t t le while and think about the legacy that you are leaving behind for your loved ones . Make sure that your children know you and remember you. Star t a family tree in the living room, (follow the step by step guide from Buco on page 66), spend time with the whole family this festive season by planning a family reunion with a l i t t le help from Annelie (on page 40). This will be a breeze! My wish for every mom is to star t creating an “ Onthouboek” to share their l ives with their children. I have star ted mine about two years ago, and I have tears in my eyes when I walk into my gir ls bedroom at night and they read my life s tory. They want to be a par t of your memories . Turn to page 22 to star t the process today.

I am very proud of this edition, our f ir s t 100 pager ! Wow! Since we have grown so much this year my team and I thought that i t was the per fect time for a l i t t le “ facelif t”. Liewe Mom’s Notes

bietjie onkant gevang toe Ousus ontwikkel in ‘n juffrou Vroetelvingers.

Juffrou Vroetelvingers?

juffrou Vroetelvingers plaas.

trong families are built on a foundation of love, and love, as you probably know, doesn’t simply happen. Love takes work — especially when the details

of the day-to-day seems to crowd out everything else and leave you short on time and low on energy. “Making memories” is one way to create a lasting sense of identity and shared family heritage among the members of your household.

If you’re a parent, there are many things you can do to build memories and

enhance special occasions with your child. When schedules are jammed with activities, it’s easy to lose sight of life’s little pleasures. But if you take the time to notice those pleasures, dwell on them and bring them into focus, you’ll find that you’ve already taken a huge step in the direction of cementing meaningful, lifelong relationships with your children.

children.” - David Brower

Below are some ideas that have been successful memory builders for many families:

1. First, give the gift of time. There are a number of ways you can do this.

• Schedule one-on-one time with each of your children and consider these “dates” as important as any other commitment on your calendar.

• If you’re running errands, take one of the kids along and talk about what she finds interesting — anything from

a favorite game or book to a sport or a particularly subject at school.

• Make a special occasion out of taking your child to work with you. This can be an important, impacting and extremely effective way of sharing this part of your life with him.

2. Make generous use of pen and

paper. Record your thoughts, hopes and dreams for your child in letters and journals.

• If you’re a mom, letters can be written while you are pregnant and then given to your child later in life.

• Letters can also be written for special occasions, such as a graduation from pre-school, matric farewell, special birthday, first day of school or first date.

• Letters can be written to celebrate a success.

• As your kids grow up, letters can be beautiful gifts at occasions such as engagements, weddings, births and special achievements.

3. Put caring notes in your child’s lunch box or on her pillow. Find creative ways to tell her how much she means to you.

4. Plan significant family vacations. For instance, if your family loves history, go to interesting museums. If your children love rugby or cricket take them to some of the famous sport fields. If your child loves art, take him / her to an art gallery. If you don’t have the money or the time to spend on any of these options, you can have a great time setting up a tent and camping out in the backyard with some nice books or crafts which interest your child.

5. Make holidays unique. You can do this by starting new traditions or re-creating old ones.

6. Any time you experience something for the first time, it creates a special memory in your mind. So why not do

something neither you nor any member of your family has experienced before. Get together with your family to brainstorm some fun ideas. This could lead to a family hobby or tradition.

7. On your child’s 13th birthday, take the entire evening to celebrate the transition to adolescence. Consider commemorating the occasion with a meaningful gift.

8. When your son or daughter is ready to leave the nest for college or another destination, write a special letter, celebrating this transition.

9. Start a family tradition. Family traditions are the foundation of strong family bonds. Aside from holidays, create some special traditions that will surely become special family memories. This special tradition can be something small and easy such as pancake breakfast on Saturdays.

Remember, this list is not intended to be exhaustive. It’s simply meant to stimulate your own creativity. You can use these ideas, vary them according to taste, or add some of your own. But whatever you do, don’t let the years pass without creating some memorable times that your children will cherish and perhaps pass on to their own kids some day.

THE JOURNEY

MY NAME IS JARYD AND I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR. As a child I was very active and loved to play sports. I played a little rugby but my favourite was cricket. One day in June 2009 someone kicked my leg at school and everything changed. The doctor at first said it was only a bruise but that ‘bruise’ only got worse.

An x-ray was taken on my leg where a tumour was discovered in my left femur. On my 9th birthday I had to go for a biopsy and I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ewing’s sarcoma is a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. It’s the second most common bone cancer in children, but it’s also relatively uncommon. It accounts for only 1% of all childhood cancers.

HOPE

Unfortunately I had to start with chemotherapy straight away. People helped me a lot by donating blood as well as platelets. The chemotherapy made me feel horrible and I lost all of my hair but at least it was working. After 6 months of chemo the tumour had shrunk enough to have an operation.

There was a chance that I could have lost my leg but my parent’s prayers were answered. On the 14th of January 2010 I went in for surgery and after a very long 12 hours, 6 units of blood and a lot of pins and screws, I woke up with both of my legs.

According to my dad I shouldn’t worry about my battle scars because he says it will impress the girls! My last chemotherapy was in July 2010 and soon my hair and eyelashes started to grow back. It wasn’t long before I even needed my first haircut. Today I am 13 years old and although I still have to go for check-ups, I am lucky to have a chance to continue my journey!

Rainer Maria Rilke once said, “The only journey is the one within.” For me it sure has been a bumpy journey, mentally and physically but things are finally looking up.

DONATING A LITTLE BLOOD MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCEDonating a unit of blood or as the SANBS sees it, “a precious gift of life,” can save up to three lives of those patients in dire need of blood. By becoming a regular blood donor, this ensures that the safety of blood is maintained and makes it possible for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) to collect sufficient safe blood to meet the demand. More importantly, it’s a gratification in knowing that you help save lives.

SANBS is a non-profit organisation and provides an essential service within South Africa. It is rated amongst the best in the world in the provision of blood and blood products, as well as in relation to the research and training provided.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg and lead a sexually safe lifestyle, you can come to a clinic and register as a blood donor. You can donate blood every 56 days. Visit the SANBS today in Riverside Mall to help save a life!

The South African National Blood Service would like to wish everyone a wonderful

festive season

How are you? I’m fine thanks. What follows, is more important than the initial greeting, hence we fly over it like a kite with the speed of an oncoming train, and dare I say it, on a collision course. I’m great thank you. Do we hear what the other person is saying? Do we care? Often we hear people, especially presenters at the end of a show, saying: “’till next time and remember, make a difference.”

How do I make a difference? Just as the last sound of those words drop to the floor you have created an obstacle for yourself. Now you have something to get over before you can make a difference. We tend to create boundaries or hurdles in order to achieve. Once we have achieved these hurdles we feel we have accomplished something. But has it made a difference?

A living example of someone changing the world like eating an elephant (little by little) comes in the form of Felicity Lange. She calls herself the happiest married woman in the world. But she’ll be the first to acknowledge that her husband Leslie is the pillar of strength, supporting her always-eagerness to take on the next challenge. He is the one that grounds her.

Written by Robin Jansma

I thought that we should tackle the big elephant in the room from the start, and asked her how do we change the world? It begins at home, she replies. If we could achieve change around us, in our living space and in our neighbourhood, nothing can stop us to make a difference to the bigger issues at hand. Grab the bull by its horns, they say, yet so often we tend to wrestle it before we have taken the time to get to know it. A small difference today could lead to a bigger one tomorrow.

When you’re employed by a political party you have rules and regulations to abide by (like everyone else). Called red tape in most instances. But when she realised that you do not have to be a counsellor or an employee of the party (or municipality) to make a difference, she started to achieve one goal after the other.

All you need to know is which door to walk through with your issue, she found. So much so, that they approached her with an offer saying: “we need you to help us at the DA”. “But I do not know anything about politics”, she replied and they said: “you are already busy with politics; you care about the people around you”.

FELICITY LANGE ON LEAVING A LEGACY

Decide what is necessary to be done, then what is possible to be done, and then do it. Soon you’ll be doing the impossible

LEGACY

16 Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

Felicity and her husband Leslie (celebrating forty years of marriage) has seen Nelspruit develop from a ‘little country’-town to a city. They have been here all the time, raising a family of two daughters and her brother (all married with children). An instant party when all of them gather for dinner. She slips another secret about herself.

Cooking is not her favourite past time. What would the recipe for a healthy and stable relationship in your family be? She speaks without even thinking: “Decide what is necessary to be done, then what is possible to be done, and then do it. Soon you’ll be doing the impossible”.

It is part of the building blocks of her family. They have kept an open-door policy at home. Anyone could, at any time call for a meeting and then everyone would know they could, whatever it was that was bothering them, get it off their chest. If something was broken they’d fix it. Leslie (a former jeweller) believes if you can unscrew it then you can fix it. They were allowed to make mistakes. Another life lesson the children carry with them.

How do we leave a legacy to the next generation? A relationship needs ‘love’ and ‘trust’. Their family motto: “believe nothing you hear and only half the things you see.” In other words, do not get caught in an argument knowing only half the story. An argument would always be about the ‘issue’ and never about the ‘person’.

Let the sun shine over the ‘I’, but together the ‘we’ will achieve. No matter how small the party, ‘we’ will conquer ‘I’. Together ‘we’ will make a difference.

‘We’, is to understand the importance of standing together. Felicity makes legacy a lifestyle. First look at the value a person has to offer. Find the good from within a person, she says. Outside armour is all but a front. Get to know the person, find common ground and work with the positives.

She stood in the recent ward election against a formidable opponent from the ANC, but still came out tops. The next day Felicity realised that they both wanted to make a difference in the ward and offered her opponent a position in the office next to her, so that they could work together on the campaign to the benefit of the community.

Do not to let our hands at the end of our arms, be idle. Find things to do. Make your life better, for yourself and for your family. Get involved and make a difference. Decide on what is necessary, do what is possible and soon we’ll be doing the impossible.

There is a place of hope just outside the sleepy town of Barberton. It is where a handful of children have come to find solace, acceptance and some form of normality. Ten smiling faces greet you as you walk up to the sandpit, each one of them hoping for a chance to have their picture taken.

A bright chorus of “hallo’s” fill the air and soon you are inundated with heartfelt hugs as little arms are flung around you and tightly squeezed.

These smiles belong to possibly the most loving souls you will ever meet. They are orphans, brought here by social services or abandoned by parents who could not take care of them adequately. But here is not an institution. Here, is a home, a safe haven, a place of nurturing. Here, is Jinda.

Jinda Child Care was started by Peter and Wilma Bakker a few years back when they realised a dire need existed within the community to have a place where, otherwise destitute, children will be afforded a chance at life.

THE LEGACY THAT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD OF A LITTLE ONE

LEGACY Written and photography by Joe Dreyer

Currently the orphanage, situated on the Bakker’s farm near Prison Farm outside Barberton, houses ten little ones ranging in age from just one year to 12 years old.

Despite limited resources and the unavailability of funding, the Bakkers have managed to accommodate the needs of these little ones, both in education and love. They have a fully equipped school with basic facilities to house and care for the children during the day and have gone one step further by converting two of the abandoned former staff quarters into homes for the children where they have a family environment of sorts to return to after school.

The homes as well as the school can at this stage offer only the very basic essentials and it is their hope that with the right funding they will be able to fully equip and upgrade all their facilities and offer their children a brighter future.

The children of Jinda never asked for much, and what they have means the world to them. They do have a few needs for next year though: pencils for school, paint and brushes, colored paper for crafts. The girls just got a dolls house so small furniture and dolls for their house. The boys got a car garage so small cars for their garage. Please contact Lynda Bakker on 084 622 5474 if you’d like to assist in any way, the children will be so appreciative.

You could change their universe, by expanding yours.

Passionately so for most people family is the centre of their lives and top of their priorities. Therefore making provision for your family in the event of your untimely death is the ultimate way of ensuring that your legacy not only lives on but that your family’s lifestyle is secured.

Even though many people share these values, recent studies still showed that a surprisingly small percentage of the population actually make sufficient provision for life’s inevitable risk events such as early death, disability and dread disease. Equally essential to taking out life insurance, is the drawing up of a valid will. A will is a legal document; a statement of your wishes that are to be executed when you die. Having a valid will gives you the peace of mind that you can leave a legacy; ensuring that the assets you have accumulated over your life time will be distributed and managed in accordance with your wishes.

Some of the most common reasons and misconceptions why people do not set up a will are; they feel that if they think about or pursue writing a will it would bring misfortune or death. Others believe that their children are responsible enough to share the property and liabilities among themselves and therefore a will is pointless. Some mistakenly think that unless they have property worth millions, a will is not required. Many people feel that they are too young to think about death and drafting of a will. Lastly many people just avoid drawing up a will as they believe it could cause conflict among family members.

Sadly these people do not realize that dying without a will can actually cause many more unnecessary problems and trauma for their loved ones that they leave behind. In short if you die without a will, your estate no matter how big or small will be distributed between family members according to the law of intestate succession. This may include beneficiaries whom you may not have wished to benefit or may exclude persons whom you would have preferred to benefit. The Master of the High Court appoints an executor/executrix to wind up the estate.

He will also appoint a tutor or curator to take care of or administer the property of your minor children and their inheritance will go to the SA Guardians Fund, which falls under the administration of the Master of the High Court. A guardian, whom may be different to the person you would have preferred to take care of your children, may be appointed by the court for that purpose. In addition Estate duty, income tax, VAT and capital gains tax (CGT) can have a huge undesirable impact on your estate if your planning is wrong.

It is also extremely important to remember that for a will to be valid it must meet certain legal requirements. It thus goes without saying that you should get the advice of a specialist or adviser who can assist you with your estate planning and the drafting of your will.

Draw up a will today to protect your family and secure your legacy!

Daarby was die proses ’n redelik emosionele reis omdat Linda se ma

Mr Nelson Mandela is the undisputed hero of our century. He was a multi faceted human being that contributed to so many positive changes and has given our country and our people so much to learn from.

He believed in, and introduced the terminology of UBUNTU into our Western Society. UBUNTU is seen as

human kindness, a humanness and humanity towards others. He believed in the ideology of shared humanity that promotes a community’s good through an unconditional recognition an

appreciation of individual uniqueness and difference. Mr Nelson Mandela

became the father of our nation although he was

not present in his own children’s upbringing due to his incarceration. His ideals and life lessons we can all apply in our own personal struggles to create a legacy for our own families.

In the book 15 Life Lessons on life, love and courage, Richard Stengel gave insight into what made Tata Madiba such a hero of our century. Mr Mandela believed that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is a choice to acknowledge and triumph over your fear.

Mr Mandela gave examples of how he pretended to be brave in order to counter his fears. He believed that fearlessness is equal to stupidity. One example cited in the book was when he was informed of the death

of his eldest son Thembi, and how he pretended to be brave just so that he did not give in to fear and anxiety.

As parents we are often fearful of what the future holds for our children. We doubt so much. Constantly worrying and obsessing over the “what-if ’s”. Our fearfulness and distrusting nature rubs off onto our children. What are we teaching our children about fear? Our fear limits our potential to live life and to give freely to others. Sometimes we have to also put on a brave face and pretend so that our children can learn from us what it is to be brave.

We have to stay calm in our own storms. Mr Mandela knew that as soon as you lose control over yourself you lose control over your situation. Mastery of self control is a lifelong learning curve. Mr Mandela recognised it is a skill that improves with age. He believed that age makes your thoughts clear and more rational. The younger you are the more radical you react.

Now, there is goodness in radical behaviour. Everything has a time and a place. Being radical is at times needed to bring about change, to make people understand a point of view or just to force them to look at things differently. We as parents need to maintain our calmness and self-control whilst understanding our children and their desire to “change their world”.

Mr Mandela said it is expected of a good leader to, at times, give direction and not to steer the ship.

I think leading from behind can be especially useful in guiding teenagers through their storms of life. As a parent you need to believe in your child, empower your child and steer them into the right direction by influencing the way they think and do things, rather than leading from the front and just laying down the rules. Convince your child rather than to force your child into the right direction.

Mr Mandela was not one to shy away from responsibility. He took responsibility head on and believed you should be seen as a leader. As a parent we should be seen leading our families. We should show our children that there is no special favours for leaders and do the same as all the others in our family. Nothing should be beneath a leader. As parents we should take initiative, be the first to adapt to change, accept when you were wrong even if no one accuses you of being wrong.

If you want to play the parent role – you have to look the part. Mr Mandela firmly believed that the best way to show your personality to others is thought the impression you give by the clothing that you wear. I do not believe that there is set rules for how the perfect parent should look or dress, however you should have the ability to carry yourself confidently as a parent. There should be no doubt in the minds of your family members as to the role that you have to fulfil. One of the best characteristics of Madiba was his ability to see the good in others. He believed that all people are good until they prove the contrary. He indicated that if you believe in the good of others, chances are that they will bring their good side to the fore.

As parents we sometimes expect our children to give us their worst, we predict it and we speak it out onto them. Mr Mandela had all the reason to come out of prison as a

26 Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

vengeful individual, but he chose to look past the negative for the positive in everyone. As parents we should take heed and look for the positive. We need to address our children’s thoughts and hearts if we would like to see positive development. Love makes the difference!

The one element that stood out above all for Madiba to survive 27 years of imprisonment was love, his hopes and romantic notions. He held onto love in order to survive. So too should we hold on to love above all else in building our family legacy. One day we are going to look back and ask ourselves: “What legacy am I leaving behind?” We all cannot be Mr Nelson Mandela, but we surely can learn lessons from the legacy he has left behind.

I wish I could explain the emotions this song wakes in me. If I had make a list of the things that helped my sudden ‘awakening’ to pay tribute to, this song would be in the top ten, along with losing our baby on 20 weeks, seeing my grandmother for the first time in four years and hardly being able to spend any time time with her or my ‘mommy’ due to work (and whole bunch of other things). Life’s funny like that I guess, those ‘a-ha’ moments hit you anywhere.

I use to be quite cold when it came to ‘personal stuff ’ at the office – believing that having a job, especially one that paid well and took care of you, in these trying times, was something to be extremely

grateful for. Having a bad attitude, or a jaw dropping sense of entitlement about everything, or making your problems everyone else’s (including the company’s) was an instant red alert for me. Waking my inner-witch and having her stand at attention every time someone would step into my bubble. Do your job, properly, no excuses – that’s what I wanted, because that’s what everyone got form me.

Until the year 2014 came and knocked my hard-working, ladder-climbing, ambitious-self, right on her butt. It kind of left me wondering ‘ok, so if not this…then what?’

Why do we work from 7am to ‘whenever-everything-is-done’pm? To drive the nice cars we drive, to stay in our nice houses, to buy our kids the best? To be stressed and have our limits tested each and every day? I thrive under pressure. It brings out the best and most

efficient side of me, and ‘getting it done’ was my drug of choice.

But, why? Is it worth giving up so much for it? Having a star athlete and sportsman for a son, but not even being able to make it to half of his events and see his achievements (only the trophies in the bookcase).

Worth it?...

Being over the moon when you find out you’re pregnant, then being almost too afraid to tell anyone because ‘what about work?’. Getting sick, but still going to work, until you eventually land up in hospital having to give birth to an ‘almost-baby’ who’s heart couldn’t keep up with your stressed-out body.

What price is too high?

And that’s when the realization hit me. Life is a game made for everyone.

And love is the prize.I already had that, plenty of it! I have an amazing husband that loves me to the moon and back, amazing sons, with so much potential and love! A wonderful family, a farm and crazy dogs, an amazing love of stories and the gift to write them. What more do I want/need? Nothing! All I needed to do was to appreciate it, and soak it up. I had to let it take me to where ever I am supposed to be.

All this time I was finding myself, and I didn’t even know I was lost. This is what I’m doing, where ever it takes me.

As the Group Procurement Manager fora large plant hire company with branchesin South-Africa and Mozambique, she’s the poster child for pure, drivenambition, organisation and the neverending search for perfection. Although she’s been labelled as difficult, demanding and often referred to asa ‘control freak’, it is the ‘after hours’version of herself that she loves themost.

This is where she dreams up stories, by the dozen; sitting on the ‘stoep’ on their farm in South-Africa, dreaming in the shower, riding off-road with her husband and sons on their bikes or meeting her characters in her imaginary world as she’s on the treadmill or the rower.

She has been writing stories since she was 12 years old, and having lived all over in South Africa and some parts of the world, she has finally come to the realisation that her ultimate dream job is to be a full time writer. Letting people everywhere fall in love with the stories and characters in her worlds. So now, at the wise old age of 30 (wink wink) she has decided to pursue this dream with every ounce of tenacious, foot-stomping determination that she is known for.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE?People and life! Such interesting things. I’m fascinated with people’s thought processes. I always want to know why they do or say or react in certain ways. So when I meet a really interesting person, a character starts to develop in my mind, until they become a person to me.TELL US ABOUT YOUR WRITING

PROCESS?I have a whole heap of characters that live in my ‘writing world’, but only once I meet a match for one that already exists, their story start to form. Once I have their story, I start writing, and then it just pours out of me – like it’s real and it really happened. (that sounds strange out loud! – but I don’t know how else to describe it.)Only when their story is basically written, then I start colouring in with details and research.

DO YOU LISTEN (OR TALK TO) TO YOUR CHARACTERS?(hahaha…I should have thought about this one first, before saying “I sound strange”. I’m so glad I’m not the only one!) Yes, my characters are real people, and if I’m stuck or confused about where the character is taking me, I have to take a minute and ‘talk to them’ so we can straighten out where we’re going.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WRITERS?Oh wow…um, could someone send me some advice please? Advice from a newbie – put on your big girl panties,

close your eyes, take a breath and JUST DO IT! Regret is worse than anything else.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOKS?I had ‘my ah-ha’ moment this year (2014). Though I’ve been writing since forever, I’ve only recently gotten the nerve to publish – after life body-slammed me into awakening! This year started on a high note, then went to an ultimate low, after that again to an ultimate high and the low followed suite. I had to take a step back and just say…really?! That’s when it all became clear to me and I just leaped.

It is hard enough to exercise during the year and thinking of an excuse not to exercise is so easy, but throw holidays into the mix and exercise becomes the lowest priority. This time of year is difficult for many people trying to stick to an exercise program,

FESTIVE SEASON

but staying active in some way will give you energy, reduce stress and tension and, of course, help mitigate some of the extra calories you may be eating.

Exercise raises levels of serotonin, a feel-good hormone, while reducing your heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormone levels. You may think a workout is the last thing you have time for during the holidays, but you’ll actually feel calmer and more confident if you can fit it in.

A workout doesn’t have to mean running laps or lifting weights, which requires you to set aside blocks of time. Think of exercise as leading an active lifestyle, which you can do with your kids, and you’ll be able to fit in more than you think. As a bonus, exercise with family does double duty as quality time.

Here are a few tips to stay in shape this festive season so that when January rolls around you’ve got a head start on those inevitable new years resolutions:• Walk as much as

possible. Take extra laps at the mall, use the stairs, walk the dog and take a stroll with the family along the beach or in the bush, etc.

• If you’re hanging out with kids, set up a game of rugby, tag or hide and seek.

• Make a game out of household chores. Pretend that dust creatures are invading earth and it’s up to Captain [child’s name] to save the day by capturing them with his broom.

• Team up for gardening. Kids are great at digging up dirt, so let them turn over the soil and help you plant new bulbs.

• Sign up for a holiday 5km run or walk in the area.

• Be the life of the party. If there is a dance floor, get out there and burn some extra calories.

• Camping holidays are affordable, and most children love being outdoors. There are lots of opportunities for exercise, from raising a tent to nature hikes.

• If you are at the beach this holiday, take a swim in the ocean or take a few laps in the swimming pool while cooling down.

• Pedal down a tranquil bike path or explore a nearby neighbourhood that you’ve never been to before.

• Fill up on veggies and lean protein. Everyone loves to overindulge but make sure there are some veggies and fruits included in your meals.

• Stay hydrated. Water fills you up and fires up your metabolism.

Enjoy the holidays. It’s a beautiful time of the year. Remember; you’re always in control of your destiny.

December is a special month for family time. Yummy healthy treats helps to make the holiday season extra special. Mark the days before Santa’s arrival with adorable healthy holiday treats.

We are always looking for ideas to keep the kids busy during the long summer holidays. Incorporate healthy meal and snack ideas into the daily routine. For the children to prepare their own meals is lots of fun.

Healthy eating at home prepares kids mentally and physically for their day. Holiday foods can be healthy and also very delicious.

HEALTHY EATING TIPS:Let the kids help with shopping and planning. Make sure the kids help decide on meals and snacks and let them help grocery shopping. That way they can suggest some meals that they would like (which they are more likely to eat happily) and also have the chance to explore the nutritional value of various ingredients.

FAMILY TIME

Consider foods that attract kids. Consider serving food like veggie chips, carving peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread to look like a pirate or decorating the top of the morning breakfast cereal with a smiling face of bananas, blueberries , strawberries and raisins.

Clean out the cupboards Go through your cupboards AND get all the junk out. The easiest way to cut out the unhealthy and add in the healthy is to keep all the unhealthy out. You can even make it a game with the kids. The child with the most fat kicked out of the house can win a prize.

HEALTHY HOLIDAY KIDS’ TREATSWhether looking for the perfect teachers’ gift or the perfect late-night snack for a persnickety Santa, your kids will enjoy preparing treats for everyone , not to mention themselves.

EXAMPLES OF EASY SNACKS • Fruit including dried

fruit e.g. raisons and apricots, apple rings

• Cherry tomatoes and cubes of cheese

• Low fat yoghurt with berries or fruit slices (Freeze yoghurt for frozen yoghurt)

• A small whole wheat sandwich, pita pockets, crackers including rice crackers or provitas with marmite or cooked ham or low fat cream cheese

• vegetable sticks or breadsticks with hummus or yoghurt based dip

• fruit and milk /yoghurt smoothie

• Nuts and dried fruit (Make your own trial mix)

• Have the kids help find red and green fruits and vegetables that you can shape into a holiday scene.

Use a variety of cookie cutter sizes to create “families.” Preheat oven to 180°.

• Melted butter, to grease• 125g butter, at room temperature• 100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar• 125ml (1/2 cup) golden syrup• 1 egg, separated• 375g (2 1/2 cups) plain flour• 1 tablespoon ground ginger• 1 teaspoon mixed spice• 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda• Plain flour, to dust• 150g (1 cup) pure icing sugar, sifted• 8-10 drops red liquid food colouring• 8-10 drops green liquid food colouring• Smarties, to decorate

PREPARATION1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush 2 baking trays

with melted butter to lightly grease.2. Use an electric beater to beat the butter and

sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the golden syrup and egg yolk and beat until combined. Stir in the flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Press dough into a disc. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.

3. Meanwhile, place egg white in a clean, dry bowl. Use an electric beater to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add icing sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Divide icing among 3 bowls. Cover 1 bowl with plastic wrap and place in the fridge. Add red colouring to 1 bowl and stir until combined. Add green colouring to remaining bowl and stir until combined. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge.

4. Place the dough between 2 sheets of baking paper and roll out until about 4mm thick. Use a 9cm gingerbread man cutter to cut out shapes. Place on trays about 3cm apart. Repeat with any excess dough.

5. Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until brown. Remove from oven. Transfer to a rack to cool.

6. Place prepared icings in small plastic bags. Cut a small hole in a corner of each bag. Pipe icing over gingerbread men to decorate.

7. Finish with Smarties.

Planning a family reunion shouldn’t be a daunting task, if you plan well ahead and follow our easy step by step plan you can sit back and relax on the day knowing everything is taken care of.

A family reunion is a great opportunity to reconnect with family members and keep relations strong and healthy. It is also a reason to give thanks - there are so many broken families, children without parents, old people with no family members, single parents, siblings living worlds apart – the list goes on and on.

Try to make time, even if it is just once a year, to get everybody together and celebrate! Celebrate life, love and above all, family.

1.SET A DATE: this is the first thing you must decide on. Select a date 4-6 months in advance and let all the family members know so that everybody can fit it into their schedules.

2.WHOM TO INVITE: draw up a guest list and decide how close / wide you want to go. Do you want to invite only grandparents and first cousins, or do you want to include aunts, uncles, second cousins etc?

3.TIME DURATION: decide on how long you want your reunion to last – will it be only a braai on Friday night, or is it going to be a whole fun-filled weekend?

PLANNING A FAMILY REUNION

4. VENUE: depending on your date and duration the next thing that must be decided upon is a venue. If you are planning a whole weekend reunion make sure that the venue is close to suitable accommodation for guests that need to stay over. Make sure that your venue fit in with your overall theme as well.

5.BUDGET: this might be the least fun thing to do, but unfortunately there must be a budget. Are the hosts going to pay for everything, or must each family contribute to the cost? Things to take into consideration are: venue hire, accommodation, catering costs, clean-up costs etc.

6.MENU AND DRINKS: this again depends on the theme of the reunion. Do also take into consideration what time of the year it is when you plan your menu, and what type of budget you are working with.

7.INVITATIONS: the next thing on the list is the invitations. These days the easiest way to do this is to set up a whatsapp group, or to send the invites via e-mail. Ask somebody in the family with the know-how and skills to design it and remember to put a RSVP date in as well.

8.KEEPING IT ALL TOGETHER: set up a facebook page, or as mentioned in nr 7, set up a whatsapp group to keep all the organising and

IDEAS

40 Published by TwoRedPens | www.tworedpens.co.za

communications in one place so that everybody can see what is going on at any specific moment.

9.MC: this might sound a bit weird, but if it is a sizeable function it is important to have somebody that can speak well and provide a flow to the evening.

10.KIDDIES ENTERTAINMENT: make sure that there is enough entertainment for the children in the form of a jumping castle, toys, bikes, balls etc. A good idea is to organise a nanny or two for families with small kids. If the reunion is taking place over a whole weekend, an outing can be organised to a play- or waterpark for the day with all the children.

11.PHOTOS: a good photographer is a must for a family reunion to capture all those special moments. Again, if there is somebody in the family that can do it, it will save on costs. Otherwise a good idea is to ask everybody to take lots of photos on their cell phones. These can then be added to make a memorable photo album. No awkward posing necessary!

12.LAST BUT NOT LEAST IS THE CLEANING UP AFTERWARDS: make sure that you have budgeted for a cleaning company to come and do this, or arrange some help well in advance.

SOME USEFUL IDEAS:

1.Ask everybody to bring videos, photos and any family memorabilia – old or recent – and have a big display area where everything is exhibited.

2.Plan a prize giving – have prizes for the oldest/youngest person, the family member that travelled the longest distance to come to the reunion, the youngest/oldest grandparents and/or parents, the family with the most kids, etc.

3.Collect some trusted recipes beforehand and design a family recipe book for everybody to take home.

4.Start a family newsletter : you can do this every month or 2 and ask all the family members to contribute their latest news.

5.Have a guest book at the reunion where everybody can sign their names – use the same book for all your reunions. This is a lovely keepsake for the generations to come.

8.Plan a talent show for the last night of the reunion! It might just be that Granddad has a lovely opera voice that nobody knew about. And of course kids always love to have a concert!

9.A nice parting gift to all the attendees could be a plant seed or seedling. Besides the fact that it’s nice to plant something to enrich the planet, it also celebrates life and where there’s life, there’s likely to be family. Cherish it.

Bio Jason Powell is a professional Prue Leith trained chef who has cooked all over the world. He returned home to the Lowveld four years ago and started The Food Fundi coffee cafe at Absa Square. He has since opened a second Food Fundi at Kiaat Private Hospital on the R40 and Gourmet Gurus, a professional catering service.

“Loving food is not my sole purpose for what I do. What my colleagues and I enjoy most about catering is that an average work day usually includes being a part of a celebration. We get to see couples becoming husband and wife, work colleagues showing their appreciation and camaraderie to each other after a year of hard slog, or just simple family birthday gatherings at someone’s home.

No matter what your culture, food is always a major part of celebrating.

A cake to celebrate

FOOD

When my wife and I got married, my sister, who is also a chef, made us a keepsake that we can always turn to when there is a celebration pending. She gathered handwritten recipes from every family member and close friend who meant something to us, and placed it all in a scrapbook for safe keeping. It included my grandpa’s famous homemade beer recipe (apparently everyone in Eshowe in KZN knew about grandpa Gary’s beer!), the recipe for our spiced mocha wedding cake that my brother made, and recipes that friends remember us enjoying in their homes.

I thought I’d share the recipe for my very own wedding cake for your festive celebrations. It’s a dense chocolatey cake with a spicy twist - perfect for the festive season as an alternative to traditional Christmas cake. Pair with a boozy butterscotch sauce or Cointreau spiked cream.”

TRAVEL

Phone: 0861 33 44 33 (08:00 – 17:00)

By Citybug is ‘n ‘come back’ nie negatief nie, glimlag Jacques.

INVEST IN A U/TEC CAMPING LED LANTERNThis lantern is absolutely fantastic for camping! We like to use it as an overhead light in our tent by taking the cover off and hanging it upside down. The whole tent glows and everyone is able to see into their bags to find all their stuff at the same time. You simply cannot beat these for cost and function.

When packing for a car camping trip, remember to pack the tents and/or tarps last. This way, the first things you need to unpack once you arrive should be the last things you pack before leaving for your trip.

Leaking toilets could become a problem if they are not attended to immediately. We can inspect your premises for possible leaks or, for a quick and easy way to find a leak, add Bloo Blocks or food coloring to your cistern. The colour will make it easier to see where the leak is coming from.

Sort leaking taps out as soon as they start to avoid disaster. Check your yard regularly for any areas where water dams up - it could mean that there is a possible leak.

If your water bill suddenly goes up more than usual it might also indicate a possible leak in or around your house.

Geysers should also be inspected to make sure they are installed correctly. Feel free to contact us for advise on how you can save more on your water and electricity bill by following a few simple rules with your geyser.

If you have a brand new geyser that wasn’t installed correctly, the manufacturer might not replace the geyser if it bursts. Even if it is still under warrantee.

Make sure there is a stoptap at your geyser in order toturn the water off in casethere is a problem. If there isno tap you might have to turnoff the main water supplywhich means that you wouldnot have any water availableuntil the problem is fixed.

- Make sure there is a stop tap at your geyser in order to turn the water off in case there is a problem. If there is no tap you might have to turn off the main water supply which means that you would not have any water available until the problem is fixed.

If you look really close, you can see this

is all done by ripping off short sections

of tape and placing each piece over

the one right before it.

DIYMAKE YOUR OWN LEGACY WALL

HARDWARE - BUILDWAREBUCO

When painting your family tree, just start at the base of the trunk and work your way up. You can rip masking tape into strips and just let your imagination and creativity decide what you want the tree to look like.

Once you get the natural “Y” in the tree, you can start playing with how wide/tall you want your tree to be. Your next limb will play a big role in how wide to make the tree so make sure you place a peace of tape somewhere on the sides to give you boundaries to both reach for, but not pass.

Remember to take it section by section. You will find it easier to start getting the middle of the tree set up, so that you can envision how it needs to start taking shape. The goal fhere is to have limbs that would fill in all the dead space on the wall.

As you near the end of each limb, rather than using two pieces that slowly got narrower and narrower, just use one piece that would be a place holder for the “twigs” part of the tree. And ther you go... The taped tree is ready for action!

This project will turn out to be way easier than you thought it would! You will need:

1. One roll of painters tape2. White paint paint 3. A sponge4. And last but not least, the time and patience

to “grow” the tree from the ground, up

SHELF LIFELooking for something special to spice up your home decor? This is a styish and unique way to transform that empty wall into a functional shelf space which also shows off your pride and joy. Use recycled planks for an environmentally friendly inspiration.

FRAME IT Place frames on different levels of the branches on your wall tree.A great idea is to only take the frame (leave the backing and the glass) and stick them up with double sided tape. This way you don’t have to knock

nails into your wall, thus avoiding damaging or ruining your home’s wall.

This is the fun and fairly easier part - just stay between the lines. It’s really like a grown-up version of a coloring book.

Depending on the colour of your wall, you might need to give your tree more than one or two coats of paint.

Once the basic shape of the tree is done, you can start getting really creative by adding your twigs and a few leaves. You can do this freehand or cut a leaf template out of an old sponge.TIP– Cut out two or three different sizes of leaves to prevent your tree from looking too uniform and boring.

Vision, values, customer focus, guiding principles and trust. These words could easily sum up what Buco Nelspruit stands for. As manager Pottie Potgieter states: “We really do know building materials, but we want to know you, our client, better!”

Defined by entrepreneurship, authenticity, expertise and collaboration, Buco might be your first choice for hardware and buildware, but that is not the only reason why customers keep going back to this store. Because at Buco clients matter more than competition and the team will go out of their way to ensure that their clients are happy with not only the service they receive, but also that they feel welcomed as a valued family member.

Buco Nelspruit has a long and trusted footprint in the Lowveld with quality service that started almost 35 years ago. Two defining, and distinguishing, characteristics of Buco Nelspruit are the heritage and stewardship that has been passed down from one generation to the next. In all of its almost four-decade long existence, Pottie is only the third manager employed at the Nelspruit branch, something that speaks of the lifelong dedication that employees put into this business.

The man who started it all, Calie Olivier is at the age of 63 still actively involved in the day-to-day production. “He still remains our mentor and he still really cares that his Lowveld clients are treated in the best possible way,” says Pottie.

It is obvious that clients matter more than competition and that although Buco has a strong vision, this still comes second to values. And this draws Lowvelders back to the Nelspruit branch again and again. “Yes, we do have three core values, that is client focus, collaboration and a long-term view,” Pottie confirms. It is definitely his calm and friendly demeanor that is carried over to his staff. This in turn is carried over to the customers who are mainly greeted by name as everyone is known and valued. Consistent focus on the client’s best interests has during the past four decades increased trust in not only the brand and the products, but also in its people!

“We feel very strongly about heritage and culture,” says Pottie. He assures that to maintain these values that they are known for, Buco aims to always employ and promote within the Buco family. “This means that the people who work with

our customer-family always know exactly what and who we are about.” He adds that he as manager feels driven by a sense of responsibility for the stewardship of the business. “I constantly seek to manage not only the assets and performance of Buco Nelspruit, but also it’s most important heritage - the values that are passed on from generation to generation. “Values that underpin the sustainability of the business, and its ‘family’ culture,” Pottie confirms.

People grow with the company and so the company has grown with the Lowveld. One thing that sets Buco apart from its competitors is the fact that all the deliveries are done free of charge, even if it is only a single chair. It doesn’t matter where in the Lowveld the delivery has to be made.

Pottie is a real hands-on manager who is not only actively involved with the running of Buco but also actively known to and involved with the customers’ welfare and needs.

But how does he stay sane in such a highly stressed environment?

“My entire family supports me and are also involved with the business. My son loves watching the trucks and always wants to know where they are going and why. My daughter just wants to make my office pretty,” he laughs. He adds that a game of squash helps to relief some stress and that he has a wonderful garden in which he can relax.

As a Lowvelder through-and-through Pottie knows and understands his clientele. “It is very important for me that we have one-on-one relationships with our customers and that we know who they are and what they are about.”

His advice to emerging entrepreneurs? “Stay humble and never become arrogant. Always but always manage your expenses, for example don’t go out and buy a brand-new vehicle but rather save for a rainy day in your company, as they do come along! But most importantly, build on your relationships with your clients.”

TYRE SAFETYCheck your tire pressure regularly. Tyres tend to lose air over time. Buy a digital tyre gauge and check your tyres once a month and before a long trip.

Address under-inflated tyres immediately. An under-inflated tyre has more rolling resistance, which increases fuel consumption.

Don't forget the spare. Getting a flat tire and discovering that your spare is also flat is a miserable experience.

Check for tread depth. Check tread depth by placing the edge of a penny upside-down into the grooves of the tyre's tread.

Check for even wear. When you check tread depth, check both the inside and outside edge of the tyres.

Look for tire damage. When you check pressure, inspect the sides of the tyres for nicks, bulges, cracks and cuts.

Stay balanced. If your car develops a shimmy (a back-and-forth vibration, usually felt through the steering wheel) at a certain speed, it's possible that one of your tires has lost its balance weight.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR TYRES

PARKING:The sidewall of your tyre is vulnerable to bumps, knocks and bruises from curbs and potholes. Watchful parking and avoiding potholes will reduce sidewall damage.

WHEEL ALIGHNMENT:Over time normal driving conditions may drag down a vehicle’s steering and suspension, which could have an adverse effect on wheel alignment. Have your vehicle’s wheel alignment checked at least once a year, dependant upon the mileage you travel and the road surface conditions.

WARMING-UP:In the morning, first travel at a moderate speed for a few kilometres. This will allow your tyres to gradually rise to its optimal operating temperature and the full performance will come through.

ON THE ROAD WITH KIDS

Keeping your family safe on the journey to your holiday destination is of the highest priority. Making sure all

passengers wear their seatbelt at all times and checking that children are seated securely in an appropriate child seat will help ensure you have a safe and relaxed start to your holiday. The importance of your children’s safety and comfort during the often-long summer journey goes above anything else. Always using and correctly fitting a restraint most appropriate to your child’s size is crucial and significantly reduces their risk of injury in a crash. Children smaller than 1,5 meter should be transported in an approved, appropriate child seat – herewith some guidelines:

CHILDREN WEIGHING• less than 13kg - baby seat.• between 9 and 18kg - child car seat.• from 15kg - booster seat.

Before you depart, double-check the child safety or booster seat to ensure it is installed properly. If it wasn’t bought recently, make sure it is still the correct model for your child’s height and weight.

When planning long journeys with children, consider travelling in the cooler hours of the day and taking a long break over the hot hours. Take the time to stop every two hours so all passengers have an opportunity to move freely for a few minutes.

If you don’t already have sunshades on the car’s windows, summer is a good time to consider purchasing some. If your kids are going to be spending quality time in the car you want them

to be comfortable. You also want to protect them from the sun.

Make sure everybody drinks enough during the drive. Never leave your child alone in a car, even for a few minutes. Keeping your kids occupied during long journeys makes it more pleasant for everyone. Offer your kids toys that they can play with during the drive but choose soft toys – heavy or sharp items do not belong in the inside of the vehicle while driving. Special children’s CDs and DVDs and children books also help alleviate the boredom of long journeys.

Breaking down can be a stressful and worrying experience and it could happen to any of us. Having a flat tyre is obviously more worrying when there are young children in the car.

IN CASE OF A BREAK-DOWN:

• Pull onto the hard shoulder and stop as far to the left as possible. Use your hazard flashers.

• Leave the vehicle through the left-hand door and ensure all your passengers do the same.

• Ensure that passengers keep away from the passing traffic. Keep your children under control! Wait behind a barrier if this is possible.

If you are the father of a little boy, there is a good chance that you know that he probably idolizes everything you do - dressing up in your clothes, imitating the way you read the paper or the way you stand when you talk. He tries to do everything you do and works hard to make sure he has your attention and your approval. You can see in your little boy’s eyes that he is utterly convinced that you are without a doubt the ultimate man in the world.

In the case of Willie van Staden, his son Justin followed in the footsteps that his rugby boots made. A proud rugby legacy carried over from one generation to the next. Justin (24) is one of the country’s most promising up-and-coming rugby players., and currently plays for the Pumas.

He also played for several different clubs and provinces, including Despatch Rugby Club, EP Kings and SWD Eagles before joining the Pumas. But where did he get all this talent from? Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice.

Father Willie can only smile fondly as he remembers his own glorious rugby days and judging by his own rugby achievements, it is obvious who in the family his son takes after.

Willie says he often stops for a moment and smile as he recollects those special days with a young Justin. “As time goes by, though, your son gets older and your relationship changes. When your son begins to develop into a young man, both of you face challenges that mean working a little bit harder to maintain your bond. The relationship you develop now will set the course for a lifetime bond between you and your son.”

It is critical that dads make it clear to their sons that they are a priority, that our most important investment stead of his advice. is in them and that all the other “stuff ” gets only the leftovers.

Every relation in life is crucial and takes its own course of development. Justin has an extremely colourful rugby background for someone still so young. He confirms that he definitely inherited his dad’s rugby talent but that hard work and training have a lot to do with his success too. Dad Willie is no stranger to the rugby field and laughs

that rugby must be in the Van Staden blood. “I played Craven Rugby Week at school and finally ended up playing for Northern Transvaal.” Justin proudly looks at his father before saying that he views him as one of his first ever role models. “I will never forget how he played rugby, and all the while I was running up and down on the side of the field with my own rugby ball. I was really young then but even from that tender age I wanted to be just like him!” Willie is the typical all-rounder sport star while Justin admits that it really is only rugby in which he excels. Willie laughs that he received provincial colours in five other sport disciplines that include rugby, cricket, swimming, triathlon and athletics. Both father and son agree that rugby simply enhanced an already strong bond between them. “You know, we both played the same position and we both have a talent for the kick work,” says Willie. “Justin is such an easy-going person and you can share anything with him. He listens to advice and makes me incredibly proud on and off the rugby field.”Justin quickly adds that his father is very motivating and a great pillar of support. “There were times that things went pear-shaped and I thought no, I am done, but then he just came and lifted me up and encouraged me again.” Willie is actively involved in his son’s career and attempt to be on the sideline of as many games as possible. “Afterwards we discuss the game and what happened.”According to Justin his father’s advice is always the best advice.

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.3. Preheat the oven to 180°c and lightly grease a baking sheet. Roll half the dough to 0.5cm on a lightly floured surface, and use cookie cutters or the rim of a glass to make large circles.4. Lift the cookies onto the baking sheet with a spatula and use a drinking straw to make a hole in the top of each, about 1cm from the edge, and wiggle the straw a bit to enlarge the hole. 8 minutes, until just set and not at all browned. Cool completely on baking sheets.5. To decorate, use a mixer or handheld beaters to blend all the cookie paint ingredients except for the food colouring. Divide the icing into small bowls and colour with food colouring to make any colours you like. Use a knife or the back of a spoon to smooth the icing onto the cookies. Let each colour dry for a few minutes before adding the next.

ESSENTIAL BENEFITS OF DEBT COUNSELLING

What is debt? debt is a sum of money that is owed or due. Although the definition of debt seems so simple, it can be a very heavy burden on one’s shoulders especially when supporting your family.

In the previous article we covered the process of reviewing your debt and gave you some key strategies to use. Before you start reviewing your debt, a visit to a debt counsellor is a good idea if you do not have a great financial sense.

BENEFITS OF DEBT COUNSELLING:

• A debt counsellor’s expert advice will assist you in paying off your debt, based on a payment plan, in order to improve your cash flow situation. You can thus make better informed decisions.

• Debt counselling offers complete legal protection and no further legal actions may be taken / implemented against a client, after a debt counsellor has been consulted and the client has been placed under debt review.

• Debt counselling offers legal protection for you,

with regard to all credit agreements included in your debt review process, thus protecting all your assets as well as your name.

• The debt counsellor will negotiate with your creditors on your behalf.

• You will receive consolidated statements concerning your complete debt position and what progress has been made.

• Your stress levels will immediately decrease since you will have the services of a professional debt counsellor available, for as long as you are under debt counselling. The debt counsellor will assist you with the management of your personal finances.

Debt Solutions will strive towards creating affordable solutions, in the form of a planned & budgeted repayment strategy. The repayment strategy will be formulated to enable the debtor to still maintain essential family cost-of-living and other necessary day-to-day expenses. The strategy adopted will alleviate you from the persistent financial pressure, and the consequential mental anxiety and stress that inevitably surrounds every instance of excess debt. We will manage the complete process, with the best interests of you

as our primary objective.
