MOMENTUMElizabethtown College
Schedule of Events
Momentum is designed to instill in students a love of learning and a spirit of explora-tion. Momentum is designed to pre-pare students for college, assisting them in an effort to get the most from their educa-tion, and become an integral part of the community.
Momentum is funded by a grant from the Walmart College Success Awards program through The Coun-cil of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the Walmart Foundation.
Momentum introduces stu-
dents to the liberal arts cur-riculum of Eliza-bethtown College and prepares them for their college experi-ence. The aims of the Momentum program are to instill in students the capacity for both independent and collabora-tive action, and to educate them to explore and understand the natural, social and cultural worlds in which they live.
The Momen-tum program is a
stimulus for students to become
energized about Elizabethtown College and help them main-tain this energy, motion, activity throughout their college experi-ence. This is an opportunity for students to consider their gifts, talents, strengths and what they can contribute to campus life.
The program establishes a mo-mentum students will maintain throughout their time at Eliza-bethtown College. Consistent with the mission of Educate for Service, Elizabethtown College seeks to foster in its students qualities of intellect, creativity, and character, so they may live fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to their occupations, their communi-ties, and the world.
Momentum encourages stu-dents to see connections, to dis-cover community, and to under-stand the centrality of service to the human endeavor.
Momentum connects students with a passion to learn
Momentum members enjoy a trip to Philadelphia.
Meet Kinesis, the team guiding you through the Momentum programKinesis is a group of upper-class students who are the leaders of the Momentum program. These students serve as mentors for Momentum students throughout the first year experience. Various social activities are planned to create a sense of com-munity. Kinesis students offer support
and resources for Momentum students helping them make the transition from high school to college. Kinesis students often live in the same residence halls with Momentum students offering assistance in the academic and campus life experience. Although the Kinesis members are here to guide Momentum students
through their aca-demic endeavors, they will also help them assimilate socially into the Etown culture. “I think that the Momentum stu-dents will have a chance to build re-ally strong, lasting friendships with each another, and with the Kinesis mentors,” said Kine-sis member Kenya Elliott. “Above all, I think this will be a good opportunity for them to blow off steam, and to build confidence about their first year in college.” The students that make up Momen-tum are from a wide variety of back-grounds, with hometowns stretching from West Chester, Penn. to Paris, France. Their varying backgrounds
help them provide different insights into the happenings around Elizabeth-town, including some of their favorite traditions. “[Thank Goodness It’s Spring] is my favorite tradition,” said Kinesis member Ginette Slaughter. “However, I really enjoyed having my younger sister on campus for Lil’ Sibs Day as well.”
Kinesis members line up for a group photo. The members of Kinesis hope to help Momentum students avoid the challenges of transition-ing from high school to college.

Dr. Carl Strikwerda, Elizabethtown College’s 14th President (and once a history major at Calvin College) shares some insights with the incoming class
Where was your hometown growing up?CS: Grand Rapids, Michigan, former furniture capital of America, and also hometown of Jerry Ford. During the ‘50s, I’m told, “Time Magazine” de-scribed something really boring by say-ing “it was as moving as a Grand Rapids furniture show.”
What were some groups you were involved in as an under-graduate?CS: Student Senate, college newspaper The Chimes, and college journal Dia-logue. I also helped start a non-profit Christian housing cooperative called Logan Street Covenant House. I was also an alternate delegate to the State Central Committee of the Michigan Democratic party.
What is your favorite book?CS: I think Orhan Pamuk’s novel “Snow” is the book which has im-pressed me the most in last ten years.
CS: The seriousness with which people work at making the College a better place. Faculty, staff, alumni, and stu-dents care about making this an excel-lent learning community.
What is the funniest/most em-barrassing story about yourself?CS: In one of the first college classes that I ever taught, I flipped a map up and the whole set of maps went up in the air and then came down on the map stand so that it ripped right through the maps. My students said I did a pretty good imitation of Jerry Lewis or Inspector Clouseau while I was trying to save the maps.
What was the number one thing that made Etown right for you?
What are some hobbies you enjoy to help you relax?CS: Swimming, hiking, bike-riding, reading Asian novels, keeping up with friends via email, writing in my journal. My wife and I walk a couple of miles to-gether almost every day and talk. That’s some of our quality time together.

What do you expect the Momentum students to achieve by being in this program?
CS: [They should] get a sense of how they have to structure their time to be successful and learn that there’s always someone whom they can turn to for help.
3. Get your own values straight. Every-one has values—whether they know it or not. Some people’s values are not good ones, but they may never have thought about them. Ask the big questions: how do I want to live? What do I really care about? What values make life meaning-ful?4. Bonus: have fun. College can be the best time of your life.
What are the top 3 things stu-dents should be prepared for when transitioning to college?
CS: 1. Take responsibility for prioritiz-ing your time, asking questions, and meeting deadlines. You’ll have much more independence than in high school.
2. Realize that you’re going to be chang-ing in several different ways at the same time—separating from your family, making new choices and friends, and learning lots about the world and your-self that you didn’t know.
