Dear Miss Reynolds,
As a rising senior, and with an open summer, I see working at Disney as a wonderful opportunity waiting my way. The merchandise at Downtown Disney has always intrigued me, and my optimistic and outgoing mood is a perfect fit for the environment that Downtown Disney obtains.
At Disney, there are many opportunities for my skills to relish in. The Hi-Lights newspaper staff at Boone High School has taught me teamwork, which I see as a prominent factor at Disneyland. Teamwork involves working well with others, treating others with respect, but mainly just being a people person. Through tough situations, or easy ones, I have a continuous smile on my face, which I can uphold as a Disney Cast Member.
Disney has always been a factor in my life, with my mom Erin Wallace floating from CEO of Operations to CEO of Entertainment. She would always come home with stories upon stories of the work ethic there, the trials and errors, but mainly a positive attitude, which is what called forth a want to work there in me. Visiting Disney was one of the lucky advantages of having a parent work there, along with a high position there, I was also able to do some behind the scene work furthering my want to work there and my knowledge of what Disney had to offer.

Essays...A personal essay
Journalism was introduced to me my sophomore year in Journal-ism I class. Through a course of learning Adobe software tech-niques, ethics and ways to produce a good news story, I gained a keen interest in the process. It was sophomore year that I start-ed reading the newspaper that my parents read every morning.
Journalism, in my eyes, is very important. And that feeling has occurred through journalism’s strict ethics and pureness. Ev-ery word written is fact, no opinion and every picture taken and quote shown highlights one’s trueness. The ability to do this is not shown through news broadcasting on the television, where propagandistic words are spoken and images are shown. Opin-ions are made and the gullibility of the world is taken advantage of.
To succeed in journalism, I had to stick with these methods. I had to go through with face-to-face interviews, advertisement sales and picture taking. My story writing became almost fact rewriting to get people inter-ested in topics, but not sway them in any way to believe something untrue.
Room 224, where journalism resides at Boone High School is filled with ethical, well brought up kids that I have gone through situations with that have made them a family. These situations have been tough, but nothing is ever easy when producing some-thing strong: whether it is a strong story or a strong friendship.
I have gained an honest respect for the art of journal-ism and anyone who participates in it. It’s a hard road to fol-low, but a very rewarding one if traveled the right way.

Throughout the course of my work involving Hi-lights news-paper, I feel as though two things occurred; a gain in my confidence and a taste in what the real world is like.
My confidence started during the few days spent at Camp Orlando, which were the first moments I spent with the yearbook staff and newspaper staff. Being thrown into a room with people I didn’t know scared me, but going through with it, and succeeding in meeting people and making friends brought about a wonderful result. From then on I learned to not worry about what I looked like, what scared me or what people were better at then me, and just focus on my gains: whether that meant gains in knowledge, friendships or fun.
This getting thrown into situations I am uncomfortable with also gave me another gain, and that is knowing what the real world is like. Deadlines, interviewing people, taking pictures of people, and working with people are all things that I am not used to and not necessarily comfortable with. But with the job of being on newspaper staff, there is a need for this, so I have to work through that to maintain a spot on staff. I’ve learned that things aren’t as easy as they are now. You’re only fights aren’t between your siblings, the only time you feel stressed isn’t just when you wake up late for school, the only person you have to worry about isn’t just your-self and the only person’s back you have to have isn’t just your own.
To be on staff has brought about many sides of me that I didn’t know were there; mainly the side of me that wants to be around new people and learn new things. I’m actually a curious person and during the course of my life, this trait will be very helpful. My want to engage in new things will bring about many opportunities in life, college, jobs and friendships that I cannot wait to unfold.

My most significant piece of work that I produced this year was defi-nitely the “Driving Courses” article. The reason why this is my most significant is because the whole idea on safe driving as a DPS theme was on my index card, so I was already excited to write a story on it. Another reason is because at the moment, after the incident with a high school student and former high school student from Boone, I felt as though this piece benefitted many in a way that mattered.
My first goal was to interview the head of the Richard Petty Driv-ing Experience, and luckily my mother was able to get me that. Af-terwards, with knowing all about the process students go through during that course, I could write up some of my first paragraphs. Further courses were introduced and studied by me to offer a range of prices and lessons for students learning to improve their driving. I felt as though this story didn’t have many hard-ships, but because no one had the connection to the head of the Richard Petty Driving Experience, I helped out with this DPS a lot.

My Cross training story, in the May issue, needed more work. My goal was for the page to look more creative, so that I could put down tips and tricks. With a big slab of body copy, it was tough to make what kids do during the off-season interesting to read. I also wanted pictures of kids in action, but the design didn’t call for it, and after multiple changes I was afraid to ask for an-other one. I feel as though it failed because the page was not designed to my liking from the beginning, but I know that with just a few talks and changes that could’ve been fixed. My interviews were good and from a variety of unique sports: crew, wrestling and color guard. What I didn’t do though was make every individual stand out from each other with their own health needs and benefits. I lumped together each stu-dent as if they were all looking for the same goal; which is not what happens when people are training for different sports.
For future stories that are a pretty broad topic, I have learned that the best way to individualize students and make them stand out is to get personal quotes. I changed my interviews a few times, but to increase my stories impact I could’ve spo-ken to each student longer and have gotten more information.

This picture is my favorite picture from the year because of the action and creativity that I grasped from it. A typical cross country picture would be of people running, but I chose to take a picture of the girls swim-ming, because just like running, this is a part of their training as well.
You can see effort in the picture by the cross country member and it proves what I was trying to get through in the story; that the girls work hard.
It is a pretty crisp and clear picture where I focused well on the subject .(October: OFP: girlsxc_001_023)

For the staff I feel as though I have done tons to make my mark on everyone.
Over the course of the year, I have made multiple cakes to celebrate staff member’s birthdays, and I have thoroughly tried to make each cake an in-dividual delight for those I made it for. Although this doesn’t show com-mitment to the paper itself, this act showed my commitment to the staff. I can never remember yelling, getting angry or mad, but I didn’t let people walk all over me either. A pleasant person in the room, I feel as though I tried and succeeded in making all the staff member’s days a little brighter.
For the paper itself, I think I brought forth some creative ideas. My story planner designs for the comparisons of gyms, and later the senior DPS on colleges were both done for press exactly how I drew them. I think this proves the effort that I put into little things like the story planners and the note cards (some of which were chosen for stories and even DPS themes). By trying to be creative and new in the beginning process, I think I brought forth a good motive for the staff, and good ideas to bounce around.

My biggest hardships this year dealt with confronting page edi-tors and those higher than me for help and advice, as well as mis-takes that I believed they made. The whole ‘authority’ feeling is very well set on staff from the start, but soon tensions eased.
This taught me to stop being intimidated, especially on a team that is all striving for one goal: in our case, a flawless newspaper. These problems won’t really arose again, because I will be higher up in the ranking next year on staff. But further on in my life, I can see this same feeling coming about in jobs and colleges. This experience will help me know that the author-ity figures in my life are there because they are able to guide and help me.
I never let myself get too caught up in this issue and usually faked my way into just accepting it. I would be nervous beyond belief, but I’d have a smile plastered on my face so no one would know my fear. This worked well for me because the good feedback after doing that eased my nerves and made everything worth it.

My biggest issue that I recognized near the middle of the year was my time management. Often interviews, photos and peer edit sto-ries were done last minute, so they didn’t have the opportunity to be the best they could be. But mostly I noticed that I wasn’t spend-ing my time with the staff. I had never been to a restaurant review!
So finally in the May issue, I picked a restaurant review as one of my stories and I am so grateful that I did. Not only was the food great, but also I got to spend time with staff members (mainly ones that are going to be in college next year!).
It became important to me to devote both fun and work time to newspaper. Luckily I realized this and had the opportuni-ty to get the restaurant review story: I am thoroughly happy I did.

N29: Girls Cross Country Picture, pg. 23.This picture represents my work be-cause it is more creative than most pictures I have seen. It shows a dif-ferent side of the cross country team and their training. The focus is done really well as well to creative an impactful, crisp and clear picture.
N10: Team exhibits ‘swish’ful thinking, pg. 23.This sports feature represents my story writing best because it was done with ef-fort. I interviewed the coach far ahead of time to get the necessary information, and I had a first hand view of the basketball team because I attended two of their games to get a feel for this story. I am very proud of the text in this story that I produced.
N14: Avenue of-fers culinary di-versity, pg. 2.For a review, this piece represents me well. It was my favorite from the whole year and I enjoyed being able to describe things as I saw them and as my peers stated their opin-ions to me. Mostly, positive reviews, it was fun to put them in story form.
