As we await the renewal of life this spring, we may want to take a moment to reflect on where we have been and where we are headed. I’m sure we can all share stories about the cold and the snow. Some of us may have shoveled, often, and some of us may have been lucky enough to flee the cold to warmer climates even if for a brief moment of time.

I am particularly proud of how many of you managed to keep the spirit of Molloy alive this winter by continuing in your stewardship of service by embracing the needs of others. The weather has not stopped you. Perhaps it has inspired you.

In this issue, you will read about some of the humanitarian initiatives that were coordinated and attended by members of the Molloy community. These examples of service to others truly exemplify the mission of our fine institution.

We are also about to witness an historic moment for the College as we await the completion and opening of the College’s first residence hall and the Public Square. As you peek out the windows or walk through the campus, try and envision how it will look this summer and on the first day of the fall semester. With everything running on schedule, you will be amazed at how quickly the final touches will be placed in both buildings.

With the addition of these buildings, several new programs, and increased student enroll-ment (4,200 students), we will continue to witness signs of renewal throughout the campus.

Let us get outside and enjoy the sunshine this spring!

Sincerely,

Drew Bogner, Ph.D.President

Winter is the season of contemplation and reflection. This winter has been par-ticularly harsh, but the falling snow did offer us a time of quiet and silence which did lead to action. The season of giv-

ing brought warmth to our hearts as we reached out to the poor and the homeless in our surrounding neighborhoods and beyond our borders.

These pictures speak of service to oth-ers from December through February.

The two Christmas trees in Kellenberg Hall were adorned with donations from the Molloy Community. Dawn Egan wrote the following:

“For the past 6 years, the Christmas tree committee (consisting of Dawn Egan, Dorothy English, Lori Higbie, Ann Locas-tro, Lillian Mcgloin and Patricia o’neil) decorated the two Christmas trees that frame the halls of Kellenberg with dona-tions from the community. This year one of the trees cradled children’s white socks that were adorned with red ribbons and will be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul School in Haiti which was damaged during the earthquake.

“Every eyeglass wearer has at least one pair of used eyeglasses in their drawer at home. We keep them because 1) they are expensive and 2) we don’t like throwing them away. Through the Lions Club Inter-national eyeglasses are distributed world-wide. Millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don’t have glasses. For more information about this organiza-tion visit www.lionsclubs.org.”

The Annual Sponsor A Family Program, to benefit our Lady of Loretto outreach

Center in Hempstead, was again coordi-nated by Kathy Carey and the HoPE Team in Campus Ministries. The response to the program this year was the largest yet! Because of Molloy’s generosity, 83 fami-lies with 266 individuals were given gifts. In addition to that, more than 20 people were given gift cards so that they could

shop for food and essentials needed by their families. The spirit of giving was very present at Molloy. From the smallest gift to the largest, they were all heartfelt.

Thanks to the generosity of the Molloy Community, six Midnight runs took place from october through February. Warm clothes, toiletries, blankets and food were Public Square, Residential Housing Update

Despite a challenging winter, we continue to make prog-ress on both the Public Square and the residence hall. For the Public Square, much of the brick and windows have been in-stalled on the student center side, and similar exterior work

will soon be completed on the theatre side. The residence hall now has temporary roofing and windows will soon be in-stalled. Both buildings are scheduled to be completed before the 2011-12 school year.

Winter – Spirituality

(as of March 2011)

“To contemplate and to give to others the fruits of our contemplation.”

delivered by members of the Molloy community to those living on the streets of Manhattan.

These experiences of outreach lead to compassion which means “to feel with, to suffer with.”

St. Thomas Aquinas, our Dominican Brother, wrote:

“Compassion is the fire which the Lord has come to send on the earth”

“Love and compassion are necessi-ties, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” The Dalai Lama.

“Compassion is not helpless pity, but an awareness and determination that de-mand action” unknown.

As we move through spring, a time for study, we will have opportunities to examine issues of social and economic justice. What can we do to eliminate the injustices of our time?
