Molloy Matters Winter 2011

Dear members of the Molloy College community, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We all have much to be thankful for. What a thrill it was for me to be recognized by the College at our an- nual Gala on November 12. As you have probably heard by now, this year’s Gala was extraordinary in that we opened the Madison Theatre at Molloy College with a host of spectacular entertainers. We have included in this issue of Molloy Matters a listing of the programming for the remainder of the season and hope you will be able to take advantage of attending some of these terrific shows. Perhaps I will see you at one of them. At this time of year, I would like to focus on something we do well – service to others. There are many of you who continually give to others, and we thought it would be a good idea to share your stories in each issue of Molloy Matters. We will highlight at least one story per issue and hope you will continue to send your stories to us. Thank you for all you do to make Molloy the special place it is. As we wind down from the fall semester and prepare for the holidays, it is my hope that you and your families will be able to create wonderful memories to share for years to come. Dear members of the Molloy College community,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We all have much to be thankful for.

What a thrill it was for me to be recognized by the College at our an-nual Gala on November 12.

Contemplation and Action

By S. Dorothy Fitzgibbons

One of the Dominican mottos is: “To contemplate and give to others the fruits of our contemplation.”

Thanksgiving begins a special time of giving which extends into the New Year. As we enter the season of winter, a time of “hibernation,” we are invited to reflect on love of God and love of neighbor. God’s message to our sister, Catherine of Siena, was “Walk on two feet”: contemplation and action.”

It’s been said that self-improvement comes mainly from trying to help others. The pictures highlighted around this article are of people who have reflected on an issue, a situation, a group. Their contemplation led them to take action on behalf of others, and to make a differ-ence in someone’s life. They have walked on two feet; their contemplation has borne fruit for others! Their happiness comes from a connection to something larger than them-selves. They are a blessing to the Molloy community and beyond.

They have seen a need, re-flected on it, and responded in service.

every two weeks, Tony Perfetti, Assistant Treasurer, visits Mercy Medical Center to distribute Communion to approximately 15 Cath-olic patients. He is assigned to the NW2 section of the hospital and the patients are very grateful. He often gives Communion to visit-ing family members or friends. Sometimes when a patient does not receive communion, Tony will stay and pray with them. According to Tony, “If you have ever given out Communion, it truly is an awe-some experience knowing that you are holding the Body of Christ in

your hands. Who is worthy of that?”

Dr. Chuck Howlett, in the Division of education, has long be-lieved in service to his nation and state. For a number of years, he has been serving as an additional duty Admissions Liaison Officer for the united States Air Force Academy. In that capacity, he has inter-viewed scores of top students from high schools on Long Island ap-plying to the Academy. In his role as an Admissions Liaison Officer, he is responsible for writing reports and evaluations on each appli-cant as to his/her moral and ethical character, leadership potential,

and community service. In 2009, in recognition of his work, he was selected united States Air Force Academy Admissions Liaison Officer of the Year in the Retired/Civil-ian Category for the Northeastern united States, Africa, the Middle east, and Western europe. In addition, Chuck also serves as an Officer in the 88th Brigade of the New York Guard, the famed Irish Brigade that fought valiantly in the Civil War and currently sup-ports the famous Fighting 69th of the New York National Guard, whose members are currently deployed to Afghanistan and previously fought in Iraq.

The Molloy community celebrated homecoming weekend on October 21 and 22 by welcoming back more than 250 alumni. The weekend featured a reunion dinner (including a casino), cocktail parties, a ribbon cutting for our new Public Square, alumni Mass, alumni awards, seminars and panel discussions.

On Saturday, spectators watched rugby matches and basketball games while children and grandchildren enjoyed a bouncy house, cotton candy, a petting zoo (with pony rides), and a DJ. There was also terrific barbecued food and desserts for all.

This was the first time many alumni had visited the campus since the residence hall and the Public Square buildings opened. Current Molloy students were on hand to give guided tours of the new facilities, allowing alumni and their families the opportunity to experience all the features of the new Molloy.

The College opened its new per-forming arts center, the Madison The-atre, on November 12 at a gala event hosted by comedian Martin Short. More than 600 attendees packed the beautiful new theatre to see Mr. Short and a host of stars that included Rachel Dratch of Saturday Night Live, Scott Adsit of 30 Rock, comedian Mario Can-tone, Broadway star Cady Huffman and many others. Honorees for the evening were Sister Mary Hughes, O.P., ed.D., ’68 (Distinguished Alumni Award) and President Drew Bogner, Ph.D. (Lifetime Achievement Award). Following the show, attendees enjoyed a delightful “tasting menu” and had a chance to visit all three floors of the new Public Square student center.

December 6 is St. Nicholas Day. In the tradition of our Molloy ancestors, the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Regensburg Germany, we will be celebrating St. Nicholas Day at Molloy. Please stop in the Human Resources Office on December 6 to see what treat has been left for you.

Ursula Dehmer of the St. Thomas Aquinas Program has shared this special memory:

The tradition of St. Nicholas Day is a festive day for children in many countries in Europe. It dates back to the surviving legends of the good Saint who lived from 15 March 270 AD to 6 December 343 AD. The celebration honors him for the miracles and good works attributed to him, and especially for his reputation as a secret bringer of gifts to the less fortunate. As Europeans began settling in the “new world,” St. Nicholas was one of the traditions they brought with them. The American Santa Claus was even derived from St. Nicholas.

While growing up in Germany, I fondly remember when “Sankt Nikolaus” visited our home on the night of December 5 (Saint Nicholas Eve). Usually, my uncle or a neighbor would fill this role! St. Nicholas announced himself with a loud knock on the door (not “coming down the chimney”) wearing heavy boots, a winter coat, gold-rimmed glasses and a red bishop mitre.

With lots of excitement and an equal amount of fear in my heart, I had anticipated what St. Nicholas was going to say. He greeted my parents and me with a deep friendly voice, opened his huge golden book, and checked to see if I was good, polite, and helpful during the year. ”Gott sei Dank” (Thank Goodness), I passed the assessment!

After, I had to say a poem and play a song on my flute. St. Nicholas was pleased - what a relief! He opened his big sack and rewarded me with an orange, nuts and a few candies before he had to run and visit many more children that night! As I grew up, I put my boot, called the “Sankt Nikolaus Stiefel,” outside the front door on the night of December 5, and St. Nicholas would fill the boot with small gifts and sweets overnight. My family and I still keep the tradition alive with our grandson Lucas!
