Molloy Matters Fall 2011

Welcome to the 2011-2012 academic year. As you walk around our “new” campus, I hope you get the same sense of excitement that I do. At the center of the Molloy community, there is a shared sense of significance and mutual belief in the transformative power of education. Our own actions change the lives of individuals and society. This shared sense of significance binds us together and gives a sense of importance to all of the various jobs and activities that we do each day. But like anything of real importance, if we want to keep it strong and vibrant, we must attend to its ongoing development and vitality. On the most practical level, what we do at Molloy and how we attend to building com- munity is really important to each one of us and it deserves our full attention. Thank you for your many contributions in bringing community to Molloy. By S. Dorothy Fitzgibbons, O.P., Ed.D., Vice President for Mission

Autumn is a season of transformation and, for us at Molloy, it is the season in which we focus on the Dominican Pillar of Community. As one who has chosen to live in community as a Dominican Sister, I find god’s words to St. Catherine of Siena in the 14th century to be very powerful: “I could well have made human beings in such a way that they all had everything, but I preferred to give different gifts to different people, so that they would all need each other.” This interdependence in giving to or doing for others what is expected of us contributes to a sense of belonging to one another and to the group. Being in mission together is about the nature and quality of our relationships in this community we call Molloy.

We began our academic year with community events such as the 9/11 Concert, the Opening of School Liturgy, and the Opening Community Day (S. Margaret Smythe - Who Is My Neighbor?) We broadened the term “community” through neighborhood collections of food and school supplies, and an in-house food

collection for the immigrant families on the north fork of Long Island.

Reading Outcasts United and listening to the author, Warren St. John, has made us more aware of what it feels like to be a displaced person, a refugee in an American town. One person can make a difference in a community!

Dr. Kathleen Lamaute’s “HOPE for HAITI” presentation took us beyond our u.S. borders. We are extending our hands to offer medicine and health care to babies in Carrefour, Haiti. A few years ago, at the time of the earthquake in Haiti, Molloy adopted a Catholic elementary school, St.

Vincent de Paul, and will continue to reach out to the school community through Father Tom Donohoe and Ms. Nicole Memnon, an alum of Molloy’s Nursing Program.

As we move through this time of transformation, we will continue to make and remake community together through the words we speak to one another. We will build community through our remembrance of our shared history and celebration of our future. Our two time capsules, one for 75 years, and one for 100 years, have been placed in the new Public Square for future generations.

Community

More than 100 students can now officially call Molloy home following the opening of our new residence hall. Six resident assistants – working under the guidance of Director of Residence Life, Steve Ostendorff, and Vice President of Student Affairs, Bob Houlihan, helped the new residents move into their new rooms.

Residence Hall Move-In Day

On October 4th, author Warren St. John (pictured with Damien Hay) visited Molloy to speak about his book, Outcasts United, which focuses on a community of soccer-playing immigrants living in a small town in georgia. Students, faculty, staff, and administrators turned out to hear the author discuss his book, which was chosen for this year’s Common Reading Program.

President’s BBQ

Faculty, staff, and administrators packed the Molloy parking lot on June 10th for the President’s Barbecue. Highlights of the annual event included live entertainment, delicious food, and a variety of games. Save the date for next year’s barbecue: June 15, 2012.

It’s that time of the year again to begin thinking about your benefits. Open Enrollment is the one time of the year when we are able to make changes to our benefits without what’s called a “qualifying event.” During the open enrollment period, benefit-eligible employees can:

• Enroll in new benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, accident, and specified disease coverage

• Change or cancel current benefits• Enroll in a medical and/or dependent care Flexible Spending Account for 2012

Molloy’s second annual Open Enrollment Fair will be held on Tuesday, November 29th. Informational meetings will be held at various times during the day. In addition, a Benefits Fair will take place from 9 am to 3 pm in the Kellenberg first floor hallway. Representatives from Molloy’s insurance and financial service carriers will be available to answer any questions. Employees and retirees can meet representatives from each company and ask them questions directly. A representative from TIAA-CREF will be among the vendors represented. The end of the calendar year is always a great time to take a look at your contributions to our plan to ensure you are getting the most out of the benfits offered.

Employee Benefits

In the spirit of community, the staff of Molloy College has planned a home cooked dinner to welcome our new resident students. This will be the perfect opportunity for the students to get a home-cooked meal and meet our staff.
