GMS AND ITS LIMBSThe General Mohyal Sabha (GMS), earlier known as Mohyal Mitter Sabha,was established at Lahore on 24.05.1891. Within a year of its establishment,the following 12 local sabhas were started, at different places in Punjab,J&K and NWFP:

Note: Issues of the Mohyal Mitter for the periodSeptember 1891 to January 1892 are notavailable in the GMS Archives. The above information was collected fromthe Index of Mohyal Mitter for the first year prepared with great pains byBakshi Balumkand Chhibber which is printed as a twelve page annexure –zamima – in the November 1892 issue of Mohyal Mitter. This evidence wasaccepted by the authorities of the Limca Book of Records who classifiedMohyal Mitter as the oldest continuously published magazine in India.All the above local sabhas were affiliated to the main body i.e. the GMS.They functioned as limbs of the GMS and operated on the same lines as theparent body. The GMS had framed its own constitution and the Rules andRegulations and the local sabhahs applied the same to themselves. Therewas a code of conduct for the local sabhas, recommended by the GMS, likeminimum number of members, rates of membership subscription, minimumnumber of meetings to be held every year, the amount of yearly affiliationfee etc., which was strictly followed by the local sabhas. It was also essentialfor the local sabhas to keep the channel of communication with the GMSopen, so as to seek guidance and assistance or to render advice to the ApexBody. Subsequently, many more local sabhas came into being and manybecame dormant, all depending on the enthusiasm of the Office Bearers ofthe different sabhas at the relevant time.The partition of the country was a big blow to the GMS and the local sabhas.Most of the local sabhas became defunct. Of these, only the local sabha atJammu that was established in January 1892, could survive the holocaustand is still functioning. Next in antiquity is the local sabha at Ambala, whichalso was started during the last decade of the nineteenth century.Currently, there are about 70 local sabhas, which figure in the latest telephonedirectory of the GMS. Of these, 55 sabhas were duly affiliated with the GMS,during the calendar year 2012. However, there are not more than 35 sabhas,who hold their meetings regularly and send their minutes for publication inthe Mohyal Mitter, around 20-25 in English language and around 8-10 inHindi. There are hardly 10-12 local sabhas, where the attendance of themembers in the meetings is substantial. The activity of those of the sabhas,who hold their meetings regularly, is limited to passing the condolenceresolutions, get, well wishes, exchanging greetings on birthdays and marriageanniversaries, arranging kitty parties, playing tambola and, sometimes,arranging picnics. They act more as social clubs than working for the,upliftment of the community, which should be the basic purpose of suchsabhas. The rest of the affiliated sabhas are either non-functional or meetvery infrequently.In the matter of permanent membership of the GMS, it is only in the case ofone third of the sabhas that both the incumbent Presidents and Secretaries

are permanent members of the GMS. In one third of thesabhas, only one incumbent, either the President or theSecretary, is a permanent member and, in the case of theremaining one third of the sabhas neither the Presidentnor the Secretary is a permanent member of the GMS.

Most of the applications for financial assistance to thewidows, students and others are sent to the GMS withhardly any scrutiny to separate the very deserving casesfrom the non-deserving ones. There is no monitoring, eitherby the local sabhas or the GMS, to evaluate the results ofgrant of assistance to the needy. At the Presidents andSecretaries Meet in April 2010, when it was decided toincrease the monthly stipend of widows from Rs. 500/- toRs. 750/-, it was also stipulated that, in addition, the localsabhas also would pay Rs. 250/- each to the widows, fromtheir own resources, enhancing the relief to Rs. 1,000/-per widow per month. Unfortunately, hardly 4-5 localsabhas have implemented this decision.

In order to have better interaction between the GMS andthe local sabhas, the GMS has been constituting interactioncommittees, which used to visit the locals sabhas,particularly during their monthly meetings. Somehow orother, of late, this has not been happening for sometimenow. To make these committees more functional and result-oriented, we have since formed a Central InteractionCommittee, in addition to the zonal committees, for betterinteraction and coordination with the local sabhas.

The local sabhas are the main source of information tothe apex body about Mohyals and their problems andaspirations, which helps the GMS to frame policies and/ormodifying the existing policies, with the aim being thewelfare of the community members.

The other avenue for interaction between the GMS & thelocal sabhas has been the periodical Meet being organizedbetween the GMS and Presidents & Secretaries of the localsabhas, where matters of mutual interest are discussedand solutions sought to be found.

As has been frequently (and correctly) remarked, the GMSis the body and the local sabhas its limbs, branching out todifferent regions, so that the Mohyals may prosper underthe shades of this ‘large Banyan tree’, consisting of theGMS & the local sabhas. We would urge all members ofour community to make full use of this ‘tree’, for gettingassistance in all spheres of their lives, whether it is financialassistance to the needy widows/students, matrimonialassistance, career counseling, education etc. Both theGMS and the local sabhas are always at the service of thecommunity in all these.

The local sabhas also require to be geared up for this,more efficiently, and their monthly meetings made moremeaningful, instead of these being just chit-chat clubs orsocial get-togethers, so that the community members maylook up to them with confidence, in times of need.

SHARPEN YOUR AXEJo, John, a wood cutter, worked for a company for five yearsbut never got a raise. The company hired Bill and, within a year,he got a raise. HINDU RITUALS AND ROUTINES –Why do we follow them? – SERIES 4Why do we wear marks (Tilak, Pottu and the like) onthe forehead?The Tilak, or Pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in the wearerand others. It is recognized as a religious mark. Its form andcolour vary according to one’s caste, religious sect or the formof the Lord worshipped.In earlier times, the four castes (based on varna or colour) –Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra - applied the marksdifferently. The Brahmin applied a white Chandan marksignifying purity, as his profession was of a priestly, or academic,nature. The Kshatriya applied a red kumkum mark signifyingvalour, as he belonged to the warrior race. The Vaishya wore ayellow kesar, or turmeric, mark signifying prosperity, as he wasa businessman, or trader, devoted to creation of wealth. TheSudra applied a black bhasma, kasturi, or charcoal, marksignifying service, as he supported the work of the other threedivisions.Also, Vishnu-worshippers apply a chandan tilak of the shape“U,” Shiva-worshippers a tripundra of bhasma, Devi-worshippersa red dot of kumkum and so on.The tilak covers the spot between the eyebrows, which is theseat of memory and thinking. It is known as the Aajna Chakra,in the language of Yoga. The tilak is applied with the prayer –“May I remember the Lord! May this pious feeling pervade allmy activities! May I be righteous in my deeds!” Even when wetemporarily forget this prayerful attitude, the mark on anotherreminds us of our resolve. The tilak is thus a blessing of theLord and a protection against wrong tendencies and forces.The entire body emanates energy in the form of electro-magneticwaves – the forehead and the subtle spot between the eyebrows,especially so. That is why worry generates heat and causes aheadache. The tilak, or pottu, cools the forehead, protects usand prevents energy loss. Sometimes, the entire forehead iscovered with chandan or bhasma. Using plastic, re-usable, “stickbindis” is not very beneficial, even though it serves the purposeof decoration.

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION–By Ch. G. L. Datta “Josh”

Gone are the days when the joint family system was in vogue in theHindu fami lies, specially the Mohyals, who have century-oldagricultural background, and, who lived together in small villagesor townships, near their parental rural belts, called Mandis, in

erstwhi le Punjab, before theunfortunate division of ourmotherland, on the fateful15 th August 1947. Thosestrongholds were popular andwell-known in the Mohyal biradari.Parti tion of India was a totaldisaster for the Mohyals. Itresulted in the total uprooting ofthe community, just as in the caseof an earthquake or country-widefloods or a national calamity; andscattered the Mohyals throughoutthe length and breadth of thecountry. It took decades, i.e., tillthe late seventies, for them tosettle.

At the time of partition, the Mohyal Mitter got a temporary refuge inAmritsar, at the residence of Bakshi Amar Singh Vaid-ShamsherSingh Vaid. It was then shifted to Delhi-Chabiganj-Delhi and, later,to Mohyal Nagar, called Inderpuri, established by M/s. EngineeringIndustrial Corporation, New Delhi, between the Pusa AgriculturalInstitute and Naraina village. The colony was promoted by Ch. ShamDass Dutt, younger brother of Mohyal stalwart, Ch. Harnam DassDutt. The GMS got three plots of land there, for the construction ofthe Mohyal Bhawan.From the late 1970’s, when the GMS started functioning in theirpremises, there was an acute problem for the Mohyals to findsuitable matrimonial alliances. Though Mohyal Mitter was incirculation, it was in the Urdu medium and had very meagrecirculation. The then Managing Committee introduced “MatrimonialColumns” in the Mohyal Mitter, but with little response. A MatrimonialCommittee was formed. I remember, I worked as Secretary of thisCommittee, for 7-8 years, and, on Sundays, I used to receive 15-20 parents at my residence, seeking matrimonial alliances for theirwards.In 1978, when Rzd. B. D. Bali took over, the face of the MohyalMitter changed with the times. It was brought out in three languages(Urdu, Hindi & English), the tide turned and the community heaveda sigh of relief.In the 1982 Mohyal Conference, there was a fresh wave and thebiradari saw a new and bright horizon in every field, and, sincethen, the position has changed altogether. With the passage of time,under the far-sighted and visionary leadership of Rzd. B.D. Bali,monthly get-togethers & quarterly get-togethers, under theMatrimonial Committee, started at the Inderpuri Mohyal Bhawan,which earned name and fame for the GMS and we reaped richdividends. The process got momentum and, nowadays, grandmatrimonial melas are held, every year, at the Mohyal Foundation,New Delhi, where hundreds of parents participate and benefit; whereall facilities are provided to them for tallying of horoscopes etc andthe results are overwhelming. It appears that the days of scarcityhave gone by, with the energetic efforts of our very efficientCommittee on Matrimony and the able & dynamic leadership of theworthy President GMS.The present efforts of Ch. Vinod Dutt, President, MS Khanna, whohas managed to host his second Matrimonial Mela at his place inPunjab, on the 31st March 2013, is not only laudable, but praise-worthy; first, it is being arranged under the cover of the parent body,GMS, and, secondly, it is being organized in close cooperation ofall the local sabhas, in the vicinity. Ch. Vinod Dutt is a very effective,

efficient, influential, philanthropic, social, God-fearing, down-to-earth, person and believes in uplift of the needy, with the blessingsof his elders, especially, the late Ch. Ganesh Dass Dutt of Zafarwal,one of the founders of the GMS. I wish him grand success in thisendeavour.

BOOK RELEASEA book titled “Brand Management”, jointly authored by Dr. RamKishan, Head of Department in K. J. Somaya College, Mumbai,& Ms. Nalini Datta, was launched by Lt. Gen. A. K. Singh, Chiefof Southern Command, on the 18th January 2013, at Pune. Dr.Bala Subramanium Dean, Shree Balaji Society, was alsopresent, at the function.Ms. Nalini Datta, who has co-authored this useful book formanagement students, is a promising young Mohyal girl fromAmbala City. Shri Rajeev ChhibberWe regret to inform the sad de-mise, on 04.03.2013, of ShriRajeev Chhibber (Minnu), s/othe late Shri Ram PrakashChhibber & Smt. He wasthe nephew of Shri PremChhibber, President, MSGwalior.Cremation took place atShivpuri, on 5.3.2013, andUthala, on 7.3.2013, in thepresence of a large number ofpeople, including close rela-tives and family members, whocame from different parts ofIndia. Shri Kamran BahadurDutt, President MS Agra, spe-cially came to attend the cre-mation & the Uthala.Shri Rajeev Chhibber was bornat Gwalior, on 11.7.1957, andbravely fought through an earlychildhood handicap, caused bymuscular dystrophy. In spite ofhis disability, he had led anextremely purposeful life, as-sisting his mother in runningthe Bal Shiksha Niketan (popu-larly known as ChhibberSchool), the most prestigiousschool of Shivpuri.Shri Rajeev Chhibber washugely popular in Shivpuri and


was greatly respected for hispleasant and large-heartednature. This was evident fromthe fact that a very large num-ber of his friends and admirersfrom Shivpuri, cutting acrossdifferent strata of society, cameto pay respects at the crema-tion & Uthala of their ‘MinnuBhaiya’. Condolences wereoffered, on behalf of variouspublic institutions of Shivpuri,like Vivekanand Colony, theLions club, Rotary Club, RedCross Society, Medical Asso-ciation, and the PrivateSchools Association.The family and friends of ShriRajeev Chhibber, who will misshim always, pray for the eter-nal peace of the departed soul.In his memory, his mother,Smt. Born atKanjrur, on 18.05.1911, as theonly son of the late Smt. RaliDevi & the late Ch. Sahil DayalDatta, he had his education inKanjrur & Lahore, practised lawat Tehsil Shakargarh (now inPak), before embarking on hisbanking career, first, with thePunjab National Bank, at Lahore(before partition), and, then, withthe UP Cooperative Bank, from1950 onwards. He retired as As-sistant General Manager, in1969, and settled in Jaipur. Hislife’s journey ended, when he at-tained divinity on 05.02.1990,after illness of five days, leavingthe fragrance of sweet memoriesand legacy of uprightness, self-dependence and simplici ty,among his children and grandchildren.
