    Objects ofworship

    Food Tasteless, stale, putrid,decomposed, unclean.Cooked more than threehours before being eaten.Remnants of the meals ofothers. Meat, fish, eggs andliquor.

    Too bitter, sour, salty, pungent, rich, dry orhot. Causes pain,distress and disease.

    Increases longevity, purifies onesexistence, givesstrength, health,happiness andsatisfaction.

    Nourishing, sweet, juicy, fattening and palatable. Milk products, grains, sugar,fruit and vegetables.

    Frees one from past sinfulreactions and protects onefrom futurecontamination. Invokesones dormant Krsnaconsciousness. Prepared

    by devotees according toscriptural injunctions andoffered with devotion tothe Supreme Lord.Remnants of the meal of asaintly person or thespiritual master.

    Sacrifice Performed faithlessly, indefiance of scripturalinjunctions, and with no

    spiritual food distributed,no hymns chanted and noremuneration made to the

    end or benefit (such aselevation to theheavenly kingdom).

    Performed as a duty,according to scripturalregulations, and with no

    expectation of reward.

    Performed according toscriptural injunctions, andunder the guidance of the

    spiritual master, to pleasethe Supreme Lord.

    Austerity Performed foolishly bymeans of obstinate self-torture or to destroy orinjure others.

    Performedostentatiously to gainrespect, honor andreverence. Brings onlyunstable, temporaryresults.

    Performed with faith andwithout desires for onesmaterial benefit.

    Bodily Austerities: cleanliness, simplicity,celibacy, nonviolence,offering of respect to thedemigods, brahmanas, spiritual master, and superiorslike the mother and father.

    Austerities of Speech: speaking beneficially,truthfully and inoffensivelyand with reference to Vedicauthorities.

    Mental Austerities: Serenity,

    simplicity, gravity, self-control and purity of thought,detaching the mind from sensegratification.

    Performed with faith andwith a desire to satisfy theSupreme Personality ofGodhead.

    Charity Performed at an impropertime and place, to anunworthy person like agambler or drunkard, orcontemptuously, withoutrespect.

    Performed to getsomething in return,with a desire forfruitive results, or in agrudging mood.

    Performed as a duty, at the proper time and place, to aworthy person and with noexpectation of materialreturns.

    Performed only to satisfythe Supreme Lord.

    Renunciation Consists of giving up ones prescribed duties because ofillusion.

    Consists of giving up ones prescribed duties because offear or because they appeartroublesome.

    abandoning attachmentto the fruits of oneswork.

    Consists of performingones prescribed duties inKrsna consciousness andemploying the fruits of

    ones work for thesatisfaction of Krsna.

    Knowledge Very meager. Unrelated tothe Absolute Truth. Breedsattachment to one kind ofwork as all in all. Concernedonly with bodily comforts,eating, sleeping, mating anddefending, and so resembles

    the knowledge of animals.

    Gives rise to speculativedoctrines and theoriesthrough which one sees the

    body as the self andconsciousness as atemporary by-product of the

    body. Rules out the

    existence of the eternalindividual soul within.

    Gives rise to a visionof one undividedspiritual force withinthe bodies of all living

    beings.

    Enables one to see allliving beings as eternal,individual, spiritualservants of the supremeliving being, Krnsa.

    Action Irresponsible, violent,distressing to others.Performed in illusion,without consideration ofscriptural injunctions orfuture bondage andconsequences. Results infurther foolishness.

    Performed under falseegoism, and with greateffort, to satisfy onesdesires to enjoy the fruits ofhis work. Results in distress.

    Performed underscriptural regulations,as a matter of duty,without attachment,and without love andhate, by one whorenounces the fruits ofhis actions. Results in

    purification.

    Performed solely for thesatisfaction of Krsna andthe spiritual master.

    Worker Disregards scripturalinjunctions. Materialistic,obstinate, cheating, lazy,morose, procrastinating andexpert in insulting others.

    Attached to the fruits of hiswork and intent on enjoyingthem. Greedy, envious andunclean. Entangled byhappiness when successfuland distress whenunsuccessful. Heedless ofwhether his work is pure orimpure.

    Free from materialattachments, pride andfalse ego. Enthusiastic,resolute and unswayed

    by success or failure.

    Unconditionally servesKrsna and the spiritualmaster under any and allcircumstances.

    UnderstandingConsiders irreligion to bereligion, and religion to birreligion. Strives alwaysin the wrong direction.

    Misguided, perverseand imperfect. Cannotdistinguish betweenreligion and irreligion,truth and untruth andwhat should andshould not be done.

    Intelligentlydiscriminates, underscriptural direction,

    between what is to bedone and not to bedone, what is to befeared and not to befeared, and what isliberating and what is

    binding.

    Always perfectlyconsiders Krsna through

    personal realization,confirmed by thescriptures and thespiritual master.

    DeterminationCannot go beyonddaydreaming, fearfulness,lamentation, morseness andillusion.

    Fixed upon securingthe fruits of religion,economic developmentand sense gratification.

    Practicallyunbreakable. Sustainedwith steadfastness byyoga, which controlsthe activities of themind, life and senses.

    Fully engaged in Krsnaconsciousness and neverdeviated by anything else.

    Happiness Blind to self-realization,delusion from beginning toend. Comes about fromsleep, laziness and illusion.

    Derived from contactof the senses with theirobjects. Seems likenectar at first but

    poison at the end.Epitomized by sexualenjoyment.

    Compared to poison inthe beginning butnectar at the end

    because it involves

    control of the mindand senses butawakens one to self-realization.

    Derived from servicerendered by a purifiedsoul to the SupremePersonality of Godhead in

    an eternal lovingrelationship. Ever-increasing ecstasy.Unparalleled by anymundane experience oremotion.

    The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways oflife, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his

    association with that material nature. Thus he meets withgood and evil among various species.
