    b) The host city

The International Olympic Committee elects host cities following a two-stage

process. Cities wishing to stage the Games in question become 'Applicant

Cities'; the IOC Executive Board then selects a number of applicants to be

considered 'Candidate Cities'. from which one is chosen by a vote of the IOC

    session.

Find out the Olympic Games host cities from 1896 to 2016. Before you fill in

the table below, make a guess. Why are the Olympics games in 1916, 1940

    and 1944 cancelled?

Task 1: Make a two-minute individual presentation. Choose an Olympic mascot and

describe its appearance, design and significance.

    (Level of difficulty: Low)

Task 2: Design a mascot for your school Sports Day. Make a five-minute presentation

on its appearance, design concept and significance.

    (Level of difficulty: Medium)

Task 3: Design a mascot for Hong Kong Tourism board to promote sports in Hong

Kong. Write a 300-word designer statement. Below is an example.

    (Level of difficulty: High)

    Example 1

Brand Hong Kong was launched in 2001 before an

international audience at the FORTUNE Global Forum

in Hong Kong. Since then, using a well orchestrated

communications strategy, Brand Hong Kongs visual

identity and brandline have become familiar to people at

home and around the worldthe flying dragon and

Asias world city have become synonymous with Hong

    Kong.

Hong Kong is a dynamic, modern citymulti-dimensional and always changing. Like the city it represents,

Brand Hong Kong also needs to be reviewed from time to time and, if necessary, to change with the times. A

thorough review of Brand Hong Kong was undertaken in 2008-09, involving a mixture of public engagement,

consultation with opinion leaders, a broad cross-section of discussion groups and quantitative opinion surveys.

Analysis of the results made a clear case for retention of the key elements of the brand. The dragon image and

the brandline have built up equity over the years. Both are now well recognised in connection with Hong Kong

while the city is, if anything, even more Asias world city than it was at the start of the millennium.

Technical adjustments have been made to the brand positioning statement, the core values and attributes. A

revised integrated marketing communications strategy has been put in place to carry and reinforce the Brand

    Hong Kong Programme.

The best location brands reflect both constant and evolutionary values, use a multi-media approach and a

consistent underlying message. They are also under stringent quality control, are well managed and well

coordinated. These are the defining parameters for Brand Hong Kong.

Remarks: Teachers should choose suitable task(s) for the students according

    to their level.

Part B: Sportsmanship, goals and ambitions

Sportsmanship expresses an aspiration or ethos that the activity will be

enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect,

and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors. Being a "good sport" involves

being a "good winner" as well as being a "good loser".

    Discussion:

    1. Do students in your school manifest sportsmanship during major sports

events or tournaments of the school?2. Do you know any famous sportsman or sportswoman with such a quality?

    Michael Phelps

Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985)

is an American swimmer. He has won 14

career Olympic gold medals, the most by

any Olympian. As of August 2, 2009,

    Phelps has broken thirty-seven world

    records in swimming.

Phelps holds the record for the most gold

medals won in a single Olympics, his

eight at the 2008 Beijing Games

    surpassed American swimmer Mark

    Spitz's seven-gold performance atMunich in 1972.

Overall, Phelps has won 16 Olympic

medals: six gold and two bronze at

Athens in 2004, and eight gold at Beijing

in 2008. In doing so he has twice equaled the record eight medals of any type

at a single Olympics achieved by Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin at the

1980 Moscow Summer Games. His five golds in individual events tied thesingle Games record set by Eric Heiden in the 1980 Winter Olympics and

equaled by Vitaly Scherbo at the 1992 Summer Games. Phelps career

Olympic medal total is second only to the 18 Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina

won over three Olympics, including nine gold.

    Hirotada Ototake

Hirotada Ototake was born in 1976 with tetra-amelia,

a cogenital condition that left him with almost no arms

or legs. His parents determined that, as much as

possible, he would live a "normal" life. This means

that he was given no special treatment either at home

or at school, and ended up participating in schooling

and sports. He played basketball, pulled himself

around on his behind for the 50-meter dash, and had

his friends take him up Mount Kobo.

Oto is obviously a smart cookie, and his willingness

to take on anything to get him through school and into

the prestigious Wasada University is inspiring. Hiscoming-of-age story, No One's Perfect has become

an instant best-seller in Japan. According to the

publisher, it has sold over 4,500,000 copies --- the

second largest selling book in that country in fifty

years. This is even more amazing, they tell us, in light

of the fact that in Japan there is a powerful prejudice against fumanzoku --- lit.

    "not all there."
