There was certainly a festival feel in the grounds, especially at lunch time when the smell of glorious food filled the air. This year there were a lot more students willing to dress in clothes that spoke of their cultural background. It was especially nice to see students share the cultures of others. I did not wear a traditional Irish costume but did don the three colours of the land of my birth. The music and laughter made our school a really fun place to be. The staff and students were amazing, banding together to produce food from countries such as Italy, Japan, France, Latvia, Germany, India, China, and of course, Australia. My thanks and congratulations go to everyone who contributed to making Friday the successful day that it was. Subject Fees and Contributions The Budget Review Committee met this week to consider our planned spending for 2015. Part of that review was to examine anticipated revenue and fee collection, a vital component of our revenue stream. Contrary to popular belief, the school does not get all it needs from the DEC each year to cover the full range of running costs. The remainder is made up from the General School Contributions and Subject Fees we charge each year. This year, there was a drop in the amount of fees that were paid to the school yet, like most households, we experienced an increase in running costs. For example, in 2014 we received approx. $55,000 from the DEC to cover our gas and electricity; however, at the start of November we had already paid nearly $80,000 for these services. We received $18,000 for urgent maintenance but have already spent $28,000 on grounds and equipment maintenance. As you can see, we depend on your fees to cover our shortfall and to help us plan for future improvements. We would like to build a COLA for the basketball courts, change rooms for the oval and upgrade our Science labs sometime in the coming years. We will not make that happen if we continue to need to cover our shortfalls with the little funds we manage to put aside each year for these programs. You will be receiving a Fees Reminder letter this coming week and, while we know we are in the month of a very expensive time of year for families, we are asking that you make arrangements to pay outstanding Subject Fees (compulsory if your child studied practical subjects) and consider the benefit to the school of paying the General School Contribution. With your support we will be able to continue offering the sort of quality education and environment that you have been accustomed to for so long. Christina Bennet Principal

Multicultural Day

This event has now become one that we look forward to each year and we were blessed with fantastic

weather on Friday for our annual multicultural celebrations. There was certainly a festival feel in the

grounds, especially at lunch time when the smell of glorious food filled the air. This year there were

a lot more students willing to dress in clothes that spoke of their cultural background. It was

especially nice to see students share the cultures of others. I did not wear a traditional Irish costume

but did don the three colours of the land of my birth. The music and laughter made our school a

really fun place to be. The staff and students were amazing, banding together to produce food from

countries such as Italy, Japan, France, Latvia, Germany, India, China, and of course, Australia. My

thanks and congratulations go to everyone who contributed to making Friday the successful day that

it was.

Subject Fees and Contributions

The Budget Review Committee met this week to consider our planned spending for 2015. Part of that

review was to examine anticipated revenue and fee collection, a vital component of our revenue

stream. Contrary to popular belief, the school does not get all it needs from the DEC each year to

cover the full range of running costs. The remainder is made up from the General School

Contributions and Subject Fees we charge each year. This year, there was a drop in the amount of

fees that were paid to the school yet, like most households, we experienced an increase in running

costs. For example, in 2014 we received approx. $55,000 from the DEC to cover our gas and

electricity; however, at the start of November we had already paid nearly $80,000 for these services.

We received $18,000 for urgent maintenance but have already spent $28,000 on grounds and

equipment maintenance.

As you can see, we depend on your fees to cover our shortfall and to help us plan for future

improvements. We would like to build a COLA for the basketball courts, change rooms for the oval

and upgrade our Science labs sometime in the coming years. We will not make that happen if we

continue to need to cover our shortfalls with the little funds we manage to put aside each year for

these programs. You will be receiving a Fees Reminder letter this coming week and, while we know

we are in the month of a very expensive time of year for families, we are asking that you make

arrangements to pay outstanding Subject Fees (compulsory if your child studied practical subjects)

and consider the benefit to the school of paying the General School Contribution. With your support

we will be able to continue offering the sort of quality education and environment that you have been

accustomed to for so long.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Student Success During the week, I was informed of some wonderful news involving one of our Year 11 students, Angus Carroll. Angus is a very keen and capable cricketer, who has made the Sydney West Open team. The team will play against sides from across NSW in Bathurst between February 16th -19th 2015. Angus is a right handed middle order batsman with a highest score of 135 at club level and currently represents Blacktown District Cricket Club in the Sydney Grade competition. We wish Angus every success in the forthcoming tournament.

FROM THE FACULTY THAT COUNTS

Year 7 Claire Watson Year 8 Jessica Fearnley, Stephen Frost, Sian Hamilton, Daanish Mahmud , Matthew Swavley,

Year 9 Jessica Hill, Year 10 Jonathan Zalakos Year 11 Lara Grzechnik, Erin Oliver x 2,

This Week’s News Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 have completed their yearly exams and still have several more topics to study in order to satisfy their completion of their courses. It is still very important that all students continue to focus on their

studies and that they realise that what they are doing is also important preparatory work for next year.

Year 11 Assessment Task Year 11 will be completing their first HSC Mathematics assessment task in week 9 of this term, which is next week. Year 11 students should be regularly revising their notes and preparing for these important assessment tasks in their home study times.

Year 10 Luna Park Maths Excursion We are all looking forward to the Year 10 Luna Park excursion on Friday 5th December. This is a reward for students who have completed all of the necessary requirements of the Stage 5 course. Payment was required by Friday 21st of November.

Free Maths Tuition: Free Maths tuition has finished for the year. The LAST DAY WAS THURSDAY of last week.

Calculators:

Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.

Fun with Maths Answer to last week’s problem: Two athletes are training on a circular track. Anthony takes 3 minutes to complete one circuit of the track, while Draco takes 4. Thinking in terms of complete circuits, how long will it take Anthony to have completed one more circuit than Draco? Solution: After 4 minutes Draco will have completed 1 circuit and Anthony a little over 1.33 circuits. After 8 minutes Draco will have completed 2 circuits and Anthony a little under 2.67 circuits. After 12 minutes Draco will have completed 3 circuits and Anthony 4 circuits.

It will therefore take 12 minutes for Anthony to complete one more circuit than Draco; the latter will have just crossed the starting line for the third time.

Have a Mathematical week, From Jackie Dalton and the Maths Faculty Staff
