New, ‘class A’ rest area at Loon Lake Monday, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone announced that a new, modern rest area will be built between Merritt and Kelowna on the Okanagan Connector, providing a safe, and convenient place for the commercial trucking industry and tourists to stop and rest along this stretch of highway. The announcement comes following results of a January 2016 survey that found truck drivers want more rest areas, better rest areas and the addition of com- mercial services, like convenience stores, fuel and shower facilities. The provincial gov’t will commit an additional $9 million in funding to up- grade existing rest areas around the province, and ensure that new rest areas, such as this one at the Loon Lake Inter- change on Highway 97C, will be built to a modern standard with running water, flush toilets and ample room for com- mercial trucks to park. Upgrades to exist- ing rest areas include upgrades to washroom facilities, lighting improve- ments, more picnic tables, and improving accessibility. Access improvements will be made to the existing Loon Lake interchange, in- cluding the construction of a new access road to the rest area. The rest area will offer separate park- ing areas for passenger vehicles and large commercial traffic. It has also been de- signed to support the potential future de- velopment of services and upgrades such as car charging stations and WiFi. Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2017 and scheduled for comple- tion in late fall. ‘Homeless Connect’ volunteers & donations needed The ASK Wellness Society is seeking compassionate community member vol- unteers who are interested and available to participate in a homeless count survey on October 6, between 8:30am & 2pm during their 7th annual Homeless Connect. The purpose of the event is to identify and con- nect with our community’s marginalized population so that service providers and community members can better under- stand, more effectively help and address the needs of our homeless population. All volunteers will need to attend a mandatory training session on October 5. They are also seeking clothing, food, hygiene products, and financial donations for their Homeless Connect.
