Happy trails, Elizabeth And with what seems a blink of an eye, 26 years have passed! It was in 1990 that Elizabeth Sa- lomon-de-Fried- berg moved to Merritt to take a job at the newly formed Community Futures, after study- ing economic development at university. Between then and now — as she departs the Nicola Valley this week for the softer climes of Vancouver Island — Elizabeth fluffed her nest and settled into the life of this community. And during her time here, Merritt found some structure. Under Elizabeth’s guidance (sometimes her job, but more often her volunteerism) Merritt and its citizens got organized, got informed & got things done: the Nicola Valley Com- munity Round Table, for example, and the WUMP (Water Use Management Plan), and the Nicola Nordic Ski Club, and the Theatre Society, and the Arts Council, Friends of the Courthouse, Community Gardens, the Museum Archives, Nicola Naturalists, Hospice, Friends of the Library… not to mention both provincial & federal elections. Never one to seek any limelight what- soever, Elizabeth worked hard & effi- ciently behind the scenes on many group projects & for many local organizations all these years! Thanks to her organized & meticulous work, the environment and cultural life of Merritt & the Nicola Valley are the richer for her efforts. In fact she will leave our town a much-changed place from when she arrived. And with her departure, there will re- main a huge gap in our community (just look at the list of groups where she has been a mainstay volunteer & member!)… But change is exciting, too. And Eliz- abeth might ‘take it easy’ in her new community for a while, though I’d bet the farm that that won’t last long. She’ll find interesting groups & projects there, too, then another community will reap the benefits of her knowledge & experi- ence. No sense being stingy, we’ll have to share her… And after the crying’s done, we’ll remember Elizabeth and her enthu- siasm for bettering this community by she has left behind. Find your call to action - embracing reconciliation A free public workshop will be hosted by Shuswap Nation Tribal Council and TRU. It has been one year since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. One challenge for all Canadians has been to see themselves within this work and to discover how they can affect change. All community members including teenagers, parents, community members and leaders are invited to this free public workshop to learn about concrete, practical, manageable and personal things they can do to respond to the TRC. Dr. Rebecca Johnson, professor at the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Law and Academic Director of the Indigenous Law Research Unit will be facilitating a one day workshop at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) on August 10. The workshop is about sharing knowledge in a way that resonates with people so that they feel in- formed and able to take their own action towards reconciliation. It will take place August 10, 9am-4pm at the Irving K. Barber Centre, House of Learning Building, TRU, Kamloops BC. Registration required, please email: [email protected] Hosted by Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, TRU Aboriginal Education, and UVic Indigenous Law Research Unit I Win! A cop pulled me over and saids, "Papers." I turned to him and said, "Scissors. I win!" and then drove away. Picking Up Clothes Weary of constantly picking clothes up from the floor of her son's room, a mother finally laid down the law. Each item of clothing she had to pick up would cost her son 25 cents. By the end of the week, he owed her $1.50. She received the money promptly, along with a 50-cent tip and a note that read: "Thanks, Mom. Keep up the good work!" Who's the Boss A guy is doing some handyman work at a house. Across the room is a large gray parrot on a perch. The family dog comes into the room and jumps up on the couch. The parrot says, “Get off the couch!” and the dog jumps down immediately. A small child comes into the room with toys and the parrot says, “Go to your room!” and the child picks up his toys leaves without hesitation. The guy turns to the parrot and says, “I’ve never seen anything like that before." The parrot looks at the guy and says, “Get back to work!” "Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted, when we tolerate what we know to be wrong, when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy or too frightened, when we fail to speak up and speak out, we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice." —Robert F.
