NEW TORAH FUND PIN FOR 5779!Atid means "future" in Hebrew. As Women’s League for Conservative Judaism enters itssecond century, Torah Fund begins its 77th year, and the State of Israel enters its 71st year. We look forward with joy to our future together with you, our Sisterhood members and supporters of Torah Fund. Atid usually appears in the phrase “le’atid lavo," which means "in the future to come." This means either the day when the Messiah will come, orolam haba, the afterlife. Israelis, referring to this life, are known to say with optimism, “Yesh atid,” which means "there is a future!"
Our Sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks – the extended family – that help us go forward into our future, as Jewish women, with confidence.
The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for "future" (atid) with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individuals, for our families, and our communities. Contact Linda Rosenbaum to get yours. (973) 895-2390
I want to thank Jennifer Weinstock and Rachel Horwitz for orga-nizing the upcoming Paid Up Dinner, along with everyone else
who volunteered to make this event a success!
We look forward to seeing everyone at Sisterhood Shabbat on Saturday January 19, 2019.

The Judie Gerstein Early Learning CenterWe are so happy November is here! This month will be packed
with Thanksgiving activities. November gives us the oppor-tunity to think about all the good things we have in our lives and to realize how lucky we are. We have a special way of celebrating Thanksgiving in Shalom Yeladim. The teachers put on a show for the children reenacting the story of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. After the show we enjoy a Feast together.
Our new music class in Shalom Yeladim is really nice. Please tell your friends and neighbors about it and have them come visit.

Amy and Steve Gardberg invite the con-gregation to share in their joy as their
son, Jonah, is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 10. Jonah is a seventh grader at Frelinghuysen Middle School, where he plays flute in the band program; competes on the cross country, track and Technology Student Association
teams; and has developed a love for skiing. A huge baseball fan, Jonah plays with the Diamond Dawgs club and closely follows his family’s hometown Chicago Cubs. Jonah is also an active Boy Scout with Morristown Troop 112 and aspires to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
For his bar mitzvah project, Jonah chose to become involved with The Friendship Circle, where he has participated in a variety of activities, including volunteer training, Purim activities and more. He will continue this beneficial relationship this year and beyond. His kindness and compassion put him in an excellent position to work with others through this organization.
A proud graduate of Shalom Yeladim Nursery School, Jonah has been an active member of our synagogue since birth. Jonah takes pride in his Jewish heritage and can often be found at MJCBY for Shabbat services, youth group programs and holiday events.
We are excited to welcome guests for Jonah’s special day, and hope you can join us along with friends and family from California, Arizona, Nevada, Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.
We would like to express our gratitude towards Rabbi Nesson, Cantor Onigman, Jonah’s Shalom Yeladim and religious school teachers, and all other members of the synagogue who enhanced Jonah’s learning process, confidence and pride. We are grateful for the rich experience that Jonah has been fortunate to have and we thank you for being a part of it.
JONAH GARDBERG
Family NewsKim and Jeffrey Politsky invite and wel-
come the Congregation to join them
in celebrating the Bat Mitzvah of their
daughter, Hannah, who will be called to
the Torah on November 17, 2018.
Hannah is a Grade 8 student at Gill St.
Bernard’s School. Hannah has developed
several diverse interests, homework not being one of them. She
absolutely loves animals and takes a very active role in the care
of the 3 family Giant Schnauzers. She is already an accomplished
equestrian rider and has a very special bond with her horse, Steel
City – they have combined for several champion and reserve
champion placings. Hannah also loves to read, cook and promises
to learn how to clean very soon.
For her Mitzvah project, Hannah took on the rather daunting,
complicated, and philosophic topic of the Holocaust. After read-
ing Elie Wiesel’s book Night, she became very interested in the
process of how individuals cope with and recover from such hei-
nous and horrific experiences. To that end, Hannah has begun
the journey of learning about Holocaust first-hand from Survivors
kind enough to retell their story to her. As well, she has been
diving further into Mr. Wiesel’s life and mission through the help
of his former students. Her engagement and experience in this
subject matter will continue well beyond her Bat Mitzvah as a
matter of due diligence and respect for the Survivors and those
who perished.
Our respective families will be joining us from Boston and Toron-
to for this special occasion. We also wish to extend our gratitude
to Rabbi Nesson, Cantor Shana, and Mr. Joseph Dobkins for the
time spent with Hannah during this learning experience and to
Gerry Gross and the rest of the MCJBY staff for assisting in the
organization of this event. Being called to the Torah is an auspi-
cious occasion that results from an arduous effort to acquire the
necessary skill set and competency. We are extremely proud of
our daughter.

Sara and Eric Forman invite the congrega-
tion to share in their pride and joy when
their son, Benjamin, is called to the Torah
as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, December
1, 2018. Benji is a seventh grader and an
honors student at Briarcliff Middle School
in Mountain Lakes, where math and music
are his favorite subjects.
A gifted pianist, Benji is a member of the highly regarded Jazz
House Kids piano jazz program in Montclair and plays for the
Briarcliff jazz band. He especially loves the music of Duke Ellington,
Billy Joel and the Hamilton score. Benji is an avid and dedicated
ice hockey player, having made a commitment to playing travel-
level hockey more than six years ago. He plays right wing for the
Jersey Wolves and is looking forward to playing for the Mountain
Lakes High School Ice Hockey team one day. He also loves surfing,
having learned this past summer, and skiing in the winter.
A proud alumni of Shalom Yeladim, (he still remembers the
penguin story told by Morah Susan!), Benji loved learning with all
of the Morahs, especially Morah Susan, Morah Janice and Morah
Fern. Benji is deeply committed to Judaism and has a love for
Israel and is very much looking forward to our family's planned
trip there in 2019.
For the past five summers, Benji has attended Jewish sleepaway
camp, first at Camp Monroe, and for the last three years at Camp
Modin in Belgrade, Maine. Modin is a unique and special place for
Benji, where he has made many great friendships and also learned
how to water ski and sail.
Benji chose to honor his cats Mickey, Jackie and Frank Sinatra
for his Tikkun Olam project. Because there are so many cats
and kittens in shelters, Benji has been helping to raise funds to
sponsor his mom to run the London Marathon in April 2019 for the
charity, Cats Protection UK. He also has collected and donated cat
food for St. Hubert's Animal Shelter in Madison and the Parisppany
Animal Shelter.
Eric, Sara, Benji, Eli and Madeleine want to thank everyone at
MJCBY who has made Benji's Bar Mitzvah experience unique
and special, beginning with the faculty of Shalom Yeladim and
extending to his Religious School teachers, Gerry Gross, Cantor
Shaina Onigman and Rabbi David Nesson. We are thrilled to share
this special day with our family, friends and you all and look
forward to seeing you on December 1st!
BENJAMIN FORMAN
Mark and Gigi Schwartz are delighted
as their son, Gregory, is called to the
Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 24.
Gregory is a seventh grader at Memorial
Junior School in Whippany. When asked
what is his favorite subject at school, he
will tell you with a wink, Lunch. He loves science and math
and is always reciting interesting science and math facts.
He is a member of the math and science club, coding club,
and technology club. His technology club team qualified to
participate in the junior solar sprints. He is also part of the
stage crew for the school play. His summers are spent with
friends at 6points Sci-Tech camp in Boston, MA.
MJCBY has been an integral part of the Schwartz family history.
Gregory's mom had her Bat Mitzvah at MJCBY. Her parents were
married by Rabbi Nesson and Cantor Attias. Gregory's Jewish
education began, when at 2 weeks old, he and his mom started
attending Shalom Babies at MJCBY, just like his sister, Lilly,
did. At 18 months, he began attending Shalom Yeladim Nursery
School and continued to Religious School, which he currently
attends. Gregory has made close friends at MJCBY and hopes to
continue being an active member of this community.
For his Bar Mitzvah, Gregory is raising money to purchase
oxygen masks for animals, which will be donated to local fire
departments. His favorite hometown restaurant had burned
down and the owners along with their pets, who lived in the
building, had to be rescued from the fire. After speaking with
local fire departments, seeing the video of the rescue, and his
love for animals helped him make the decision.
Gregory's family wishes to thank the entire MJCBY staff and
clergy, both past and present, as well as our former Shalom
Yeladim and religious school teachers. Thank you, Rabbi Nesson
and Cantor Shana, for your guidance and in helping Gregory
prepare for this special day. And finally a thank you to all of our
friends and family for sharing this special day with us.

Please let us know when you need us—if someone is ill or in the hospital—or when you want to share your good news: a new baby, a marriage, or other simcha. We want to know, but you have to tell us. Please call the office at (973) 538-9292 or email [email protected].
Special note: Let us know if you or a family member would like a visit from the Rabbi due to illness. HIPPA privacy laws prevent us from receiving this information.
Our Gemilut Hasadim committee is able to provide support for those that need it. Please contact Meryl Balaban at [email protected]
When you have experienced the death of a loved one, please contact Rabbi Nesson at (973) 538-9292 or (973) 285-9772 before you make any plans. In this way, he will be most helpful in making these preparations in a proper Jewish manner.
