MITOSIS
Chromosomes
Are made of DNA Each chromosome consists of sister
chromatids attached at a centromere
Mitosis
Mitosis is a process of cell division
Goal = production of 2 daughter cells.
The daughter cells are identical to one another and to the original parent cell.
Mitosis
Cells divide for growth or repair.
Before each division, the cell makes an identical copy of each chromosome
During mitosis, each of the two new cells receives a complete set of 46 chromosomes.
Identical meaning it has the same info.
Stages
The easiest way to remember Mitoses is PMAT. Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Prophase(Preparing)
Longest phase of mitosis
Nuclear envelope & nucleolus disappears.
Chromosomes become visible.
Prophase(Preparing)
Centrioles (animal cell) form and move to opposite poles of cell
Spindle fibers form from centrioles, cross cell and attach to the chromosomes.
Metaphase(middle)
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
Spindles are attached to them.
Anaphase(Apart)
Spindle fibers begin to shorten.
This pulls chromosomes apart.
Chromosome halves are now referred to as chromatids.
Telophase(Two cells)
Chromatids reach poles.
Chromosomes become chromatin.
Spindle fibers break down.
Nucleolus and nuclear envelope appear.
Cytokinesis (happens during telophase)
Division of cytoplasm
In animal cells: cell membrane continues to pinch in until two cells are formed
Cytokinesis (happens during telophase)
In plant cells: cell plate forms in center of cell and eventually splits cells
At the end of mitosis, two new “daughter” cells are produced.
