Missouri State University Housing Policy*

All single students under 21 years of age with fewer than 30 hours of transferable credit are required to live in University housing… all other students are welcome as space permits.

All students must have on file with the Department of Residence Life and Services a completed Student Housing Contract and security deposit OR an approved Request for Exception to the University Housing Policy. Students will not be permitted to register for classes until the above requirements have been met. The Request for Exception to the University Housing Policy may be found at reslife.missouristate.edu/exception.htm.

Please note:• A student requesting to live at his/her

parents’ permanent address within a 60-mile radius of Springfield must complete a Request for Exception to the University Housing Policy form.

• A married student must complete a Request for Exception to the University Housing Policy form AND attach a copy of his/her legal marriage license.

• A student with dependent children must complete a Request for Exception to the University Housing Policy form AND attach a copy of his/her child’s birth certificate.

Room-style halls

The room-style residence halls offer students in

Freudenberger House, Wells House and Woods House the

greatest opportunity for high interaction and community

involvement. With 2-, 3- and 4-person rooms, all flanking

a community corridor and sharing a central bathroom, you

will definitely meet your neighbors fast! While the room-

style residence halls house primarily first-year residents,

upper-class students also choose these accommodations.

Suite-style halls

The suite-style residence halls provide students an

opportunity to live with one or several friends in an

environment that is nicely balanced with additional space

and a comfortable social atmosphere. Small and large suites

with either an attached bath, an attached living room area,

or both, can be found among the following residence halls:

Blair-Shannon House (6-person suites), Hammons House

(2- and 4-person suites), Hutchens House (2- and 4-person

suites), Kentwood Hall (1-, 2- and 3-person suites), Scholars

House (4-person suites) and Wells House (4-person suites).

Some suites with living room areas also include a kitchenette.

While upper-class residents typically gravitate to the suite-

style setting, some of these halls provide accommodations to

first-year students as well.

Special-interest living environments

Living environment: Missouri State has an environment designed specifically for honors students sharing a high commitment to academic excellence and achievement.

Honors student

Requirement: Any student who is enrolled in the Honors College. (Additional requirements

exist for returning students.)

Locations: • Hutchens House (8th floor)• Scholars House

Living environment: The public affairs living environment is designed to accentuate the University’s statewide mission in public affairs. This environment emphasizes civic engagement, cultural competence, and ethical leadership in the

University setting and in the Springfield community.

Public affairs

Requirement: Upper-class students with an active interest in the overall mission of public affairs and good citizenship.

Location: • Kentwood Hall

Living environment: This is an environment for students who prefer a quieter community. Quiet living environments extend quiet hours from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. All other residence halls

maintain quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Quiet

Requirement: Personal commitment and contribution to the overall community of this quieter environment.

Living environment: This environment is designed for students preferring more liberal personal choices. These students benefit from a more relaxed visitation policy (time when members of the opposite gender are permitted in their room/suite/apartment). The visitation policy for this environment is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24/7), while all others have a visitation policy of 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays only (24/2).

Upper-class/returning student

Requirement: Any student who has lived previously in Missouri State housing for at least two semesters, or any student with 30 or more hours of transferable credit, or any student 20 years of age or older.

Living-Learning CommunitiesThe Living-Learning Communities (LLC) are an exciting recent addition to Residence Life and Services.

Living environment: Our Freshman Experience Living-Learning Community is designed to enhance students’ first year and help ease their transition into college life. Residents on these floors will receive numerous opportunities to interact with other students and to get involved on campus. In addition, LLC residents will have the chance to interact with faculty in a relaxed setting outside the classroom. There are three all-freshman (two female and one male) floors.

Freshman Experience LLC

Requirement: Completion of an interest form; space is limited to first

come/first served.

Living environment: Students who want to continue their LLC experience can take part in the Sophomore Experience Living-Learning Community. Sophomores will focus on career and graduate school exploration and preparation, gaining leadership experience, personal wellness, financial responsibility, public affairs activities and much more. Students may choose the co-ed floor in Blair-Shannon on Shannon 2 (all suites) or all-female, suite-style living in Wells House.

Living environment: The College of Health and Human Services Future Health Care Professionals Living-Learning Community is an ideal living community for students interested in a health care or human services profession. Students have the opportunity to live with and learn from other students who have shared interests and goals. Students have interactions with faculty from the College of Health and Human Services outside the classroom through programming, informal advising and mentoring. Students also have networking opportunities with alumni and potential future employers. Please check the College of Health and Human Services website for requirements.

Incentives Faculty FellowsFaculty Fellows are Missouri State professors who have been nominated by students for the positive impact they make on campus. Faculty Fellows assist in academic programming and interact with students during social events. Faculty Fellows voluntarily participate in the Living-Learning Communities. They represent a variety of academic disciplines and are committed to building community by learning together. The Faculty Fellows are great resources, and they even help students become more comfortable with approaching faculty.

Dining servicesSodexo Campus Services, one of the largest contract food-service providers in North America, has provided nutritious, quality food with excellent service and variety for the Missouri State community for the past 15 years.Today’s college students have grown up in homes where nutrition and health consciousness are part of everyday life. Sodexo responds to these changes by catering menus to meet the demands for fresher, more nutritious and higher-quality foods.

Through a competitive bid process, a new contract for dining services at Missouri State will have been awarded for the fall 2011 semester. As a result, some anticipated and exciting changes may be in place beginning June 1, 2011.

Our three locations provide continued variety of dining options as well as extensive service hours and diverse menus. Participants may choose when and what they want to eat.

With our current meal plans, students can select a 10-, 14-, 19-meal plan or an unlimited-meal plan. The unlimited-meal plan provides complete access to all dining center services anytime the dining centers are open for service. The 10-, 14-, 19-meal plans are any 10, 14 or 19 visits per week. The week begins at breakfast on Monday and ends with the Sunday dinner meal. Students may eat in the dining center of their choice by simply presenting their BearPass ID card. In the future, meal plans may undergo changes to their names, however they will continue to offer a wide variety of dining options.

Meal plans are required and included in the Student Housing Contract rates for Blair-Shannon House, Freudenberger House, Hammons House, Hutchens House, Kentwood Hall, Scholars House, Wells House and Woods House. Residents of Sunvilla Tower are not required to have a meal plan but may purchase an optional meal plan. For prices for optional meal plans, please refer to page 3.

After hours diningAfter hours dining is an exciting element of on-campus living. Offered Sunday-Thursday evenings, generally 9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., this fourth dining option is very popular with our residents, as it provides a good study break and an opportunity for students to collaborate on group projects!

Dining center features• Hot, nourishing meals served seven days a week, featuring

a diverse menu that will appeal to everyone. Meals range from help-yourself salads, deli bar and home-cooked meals to sizzling items from the grill which include a variety of hamburgers and french fries. There are also extensive ethnic features.

• Extended service hours. The dining centers are open from breakfast to dinner so the service hours do not conflict with the busy lives of the students. (Kentwood Dining Center is open during specific meal segments.)

• Unlimited seconds! Once you enter the dining center, you may have unlimited selections of all entrees and beverages.

• Free meals for visiting parents. A visiting parent may enter a dining center with their student and eat for free.

BearFare

In addition to the standard meal plans which provide access to each of the three dining centers, students may contract for an additional plan called BearFare. BearFare meals may be redeemed for special menu items at several non-dining center locations.

Residents pay a reduced price for a meal valued between $5.00 and $7.00. These locations include Blimpie Subs & Salads, Boomer’s Café, Domino’s Pizza, Freshens, Grill 155 and Wok & Roll. Students may use a BearFare meal as often as they like during the week after 1:00 p.m. and anytime during the weekend and University holidays. BearFare meals may be purchased through the Student Housing Contract in blocks of 15, 35, or 50 each semester. Students may purchase additional blocks of BearFare anytime.

BearFare is very popular with the residential population and although it may not be called BearFare in the new contract, the same type of choice(s) will be available for students to supplement their meal plan.

Computer Labs and Technology

Printing quota

Each residence hall reception desk has a laser printer provided for student use. All residence hall students are provided with an automated laser printing quota of 350 pages (not including cover pages) each semester. Students who would like to purchase additional printed pages may do so in blocks of 100 for $5.00 in the Department of Residence Life and Services. Pages not picked up in a timely fashion will be placed in the student’s mailbox.

Bytes@Night

Bytes@Night is offered to all residence hall students to provide more total bandwidth. From midnight to 6:00 a.m. every night, all bandwidth will be recorded as 10% of the actual amount

Computer labs are available in each residence hall. All computer labs are exclusive to the students of the individual residence halls.

All computers in the residence halls use the Windows operating system and are able to access the University’s network, all library resources, the Internet and can utilize applicable software.

In addition to University-provided computer workstations, each room in every residence hall has wired Internet access. Certain minimum computer configurations are required and are listed as follows:

downloaded (or uploaded). For example, if a student downloads a movie from iTunes, or streams a Netflix movie that would normally have taken 10 gigabytes, 90% of that will be ignored and only 1 gigabyte (10%) will show up on the student’s quota. Because we have unused bandwidth during this time, Bytes@Night offers an ideal time for students to perform larger downloads. Additionally, most operating system updates that are scheduled for nighttime updates will not affect a student’s quota nearly as much.

Computer support help desk

A residence life help desk has been established to assist students with their computing needs and questions. Any residence hall student with a computer-related question is encouraged to contact the Computer Support Help Desk at 836-6100. Students are encouraged to leave a message after normal business hours.

Card-access system

An electronic card-access system is in operation in all residence halls. This security system provides monitored access to the residence halls. All guests must enter through the front doors of each residence hall unless accompanied by a resident using his/her access card.

24-hour staffing

Each residence hall provides 24-hour staffing of the reception desk. All reception desks are equipped with several items for student check-out such as vacuums, games, recreational equipment and engravers to identify personal property. Along with the reception desk, the residence hall directors, assistant hall directors and resident assistants live in each residence hall to provide immediate emergency services. Emergency services are also provided by custodial and maintenance staff 24 hours per day.

Disability access

Most residence halls are accessible to students with physical disabilities. Certain living units in the residence halls are specifically designed for students using wheelchairs and those with hearing impairments. Approved service animals are permitted in all residence halls. Accessible parking is available for students with physical disabilities as well. We suggest that any student with a disability, as defined by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, who plans to reside in University housing contact the Disability Resource Center at 417-836-4192 or 417-836-6792 (TTY) and/or the Department of Residence Life and Services at 417-836-5536 or 417-836-5503 (TTY). Early self-disclosure of special needs will help us to better accommodate those needs.

Parking

For those students with a need to possess a vehicle at Missouri State, some parking is provided near the residence halls. In addition, Sunvilla Tower contains an underground parking garage facility. Sunvilla Tower residents may rent a parking space, by semester, on a first-come, first-served basis. The University encourages students to use the Missouri State shuttle system whenever possible.

Taylor Health and Wellness Center

University Recreation Center

Missouri State students will soon have a new fitness facility where they can run, swim, lift weights or shoot baskets to their hearts’ content. The University Recreation Center, expected to open in 2011, will have a variety of resources, including a pool with lap lanes and a water-current channel. Students seeking adventure will be able to tackle rock climbing and bouldering walls. Teams can challenge each other on the basketball courts. Those just wanting to unwind after a tough day of classes can find relaxation in a spa and sauna. The center will be open to all students

Laundry facilities

Each residence hall provides ample laundering facilities, at no additional charge, including washing and drying machines, folding tables and ironing boards.

Custodial services

The residence life custodial staff cleans all public restrooms and public areas on a regular basis. Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms, suites and apartments.

Safe walk service

The Department of Safety and Transportation provides an on-campus safety walking service for Missouri State students (male and female) during the fall and spring semesters, except during breaks and holidays. This service operates daily to and from locations on campus during the hours of darkness.

Shuttle service

The Missouri State shuttle system operates daily until midnight while classes are in session. The BearLine route includes various stops near the residence halls and academic buildings.

Police Substation

In cooperation with the Springfield Police Department, the University operates a Police Substation located on campus. Officers assigned to the substation provide police service to the Missouri State campus and the surrounding University community.

Student common areas

To provide an alternative to student living areas, each residence hall is designed with grand lounges and other student gathering areas. These areas are the perfect “get away” for group study, recreation and places to meet guests in a common area. It is typical to find recreation equipment, comfortable lounge furniture and TVs in these areas.

The residence life staff and student leaders at Missouri State are committed to strengthening the relationships and levels of understanding among people by supporting the diversity that exists on our campus and in the world around us. We encourage each student to see this as a lifelong learning process in which we continue to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to be positive and productive members of society. Developing these skills and attitudes involves a commitment to valuing human diversity. Therefore, we encourage acceptance and appreciation of people of all backgrounds and differences. Holding to the belief that society is strengthened by the acceptance of human diversity and the ideas that generate from that diversity, we encourage staff and students to reach out to each other and develop positive relationships. Study rooms

To help promote an environment for academic success, all residence halls have facilities designed specifically for quiet study. These rooms are equipped with adequate lighting and study furniture to create a comfortable and scholarly environment. It is each student’s responsibility to help maintain these quiet study environments.

Residence life leadership opportunities

The residence life system provides many avenues for involvement, as well as opportunities for positions of leadership. By taking advantage of these opportunities, students have the chance to grow through the development of new friendships, the exploration of new ideas, and involvement in new activities. A $12.00 Residence Hall Association activity fee, per semester, is included in the Student Housing Contract.

The EPA defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In other words, Make It Last! The Missouri State Residence Life and Services program contributes to the University’s (and the world’s) sustainability efforts in many ways. Here are some of the ways that we are working to be more sustainable in the residence hall communities:• The replacement of inefficient light bulbs within the

residence halls with more efficient and energy-saving fluorescent bulbs

• Using environmentally friendly and Green Seal Certified products to prevent introducing Volatile Organic Compounds into our environment

• Using energy-saving appliances in refurbishing and future projects within the residence halls

• Installation of low flow showerheads and aerators• Composting dining center waste• Residence Hall Association’s Green Bike Program• Installation of occupancy sensors in common area spaces

to reduce energy usage for lighting

There are continual opportunities to practice energy and water conservation and waste reduction in the residence halls. Our hope is that residents of Missouri State University residence halls take this knowledge and continue to use it in their daily lives.

An important part of our sustainability effort is recycling. Each residence hall is equipped to handle recycling of aluminum, glass, plastic, tin, mixed paper and cardboard. There are labeled bins for recycling located conveniently on each floor in all residence halls. Each residence hall bedroom contains a green recycling container to assist residents in sorting recyclables and waste before relocating these recyclable items to the community recycling containers. All types of batteries, plastic shopping bags and printer cartridges can be recycled at each residence hall’s front desk. Conserve! Conserve energy by turning off lights when a room is vacant and unplugging items when not in use. Shut windows if running heat or air conditioning. Conserve water by shortening your shower time and turning the faucet off while brushing teeth or shaving.

Reduce! Reduce the amount of waste you produce by preparing or taking only the amount of food that you will eat. Reduce the amount of paper you waste by printing only what is necessary. Reduce your carbon footprint by riding public transportation such as BearLine around campus, take a bike or walk for great exercise!

Reuse! Donate your reusable items by participating in Residence Life and Service’s closing recycling program, Bear Share, at the end of the academic year or by dropping items off at a local donation center anytime during the year.

Recycle! Recycle every item that can be recycled and promote the world’s recycling by purchasing and utilizing products made from recycled materials.

Participate! Please join us in our efforts to protect this planet and its valuable resources by participating in sustainable campus activities, such as the annual RecycleMania nationwide competition, Project Greenway and other educational programs.

Central staff

The department’s central management team consists of the director and several associate/assistant directors, all highly trained and committed to the residence life profession. These professionals, along with the office support staff, provide numerous services and oversee the entire residence life and services operation.

Residence hall staff

Both full-time, live-in residence hall directors and assistant hall directors manage the individual residence halls. Along with the day-to-day administration, these staff members advise students and facilitate social and educational programs and activities.

Another integral part of the residence life staffing are the resident assistants (RAs). RAs are upper-class undergraduate students, living on the floors of each residence hall, who receive extensive training and serve as information sources and peer advisors. They maintain close contact with the residents.

Support staff

Along with the central office support staff, there are other staff members who provide essential services to the residents. Reception desk staff, custodial staff, maintenance staff, as well as student workers, are all committed to providing each resident the opportunities and services necessary to fully experience the college life.

Woods House, a 10-story residence hall, provides 376 men and

women with single-gender floors. The friendly environment

and the 10th-floor common area are two aspects students

like most about the facility. The combination of fun people

and a location to gather bond the residents into their own

small community.

The double-occupancy room plan includes a sink unique to Woods House, and the floors are tiled. A community bath is located on each floor with ample individual stalls and showers.

A special feature of Woods House is its 10th-floor common area. It offers a beautiful view of campus and the surrounding Springfield community. This common area provides a TV lounge, fitness center, central kitchen facility, laundry room, ice and vending machines, music practice room, study lounge and recreation area. On the first floor is a grand lounge and computer lab, offering the latest in hardware and software technology, including access to the Internet, word processing and spreadsheet packages, and laser printing. Woods House enforces a visitation policy with fewer restrictions on the weekends, is closed during winter and spring breaks and requires all residents to have a meal plan.

retreat when you need a place to get away. When I want to socialize, I can sit on the floor outside the rooms and talk for hours with the other girls.

Wells House, our first true residence hall, houses 490 men and

women. This U-shaped, centrally located residence hall is

designed with 2- and 3-person room-style accommodations,

bond : Wells is a wonderful place to live because the atmosphere is both laid-back and enthusiastic, which makes for a great community. The hall’s staff members are always willing to work with their residents. We also have a good bit of pride about the

hall’s namesake, Bertha Wells (a dean from 1918 to 1955). She was awesome and everyone in Wells adores her. The sense of community is strong in Wells and it makes living there a very positive experience.

Residents of Kentwood Hall, formerly the Kentwood Arms

Hotel, may be living in a room that once housed President Harry

S. Truman or Groucho Marx. The luxury hotel turned residence

hall combines tradition and modern convenience in a unique

living experience.

Kentwood Hall houses 136 upper-class men and women in a coed environment.

This hall provides carpeted, furnished one-bedroom suites accommodating 1, 2 and 3 persons. All suites have private bathrooms.

Students may utilize the Kentwood Dining Center, study room, TV lounge, fitness center, central laundry facility, recreation room, ice and vending machine area, as well as the computer lab offering the latest in hardware and software technology, including access to the Internet, word processing and spreadsheet packages, and laser printing. Kentwood Hall maintains a liberal visitation policy, is closed during winter and spring breaks and requires all residents to have a meal plan.

Kentwood Hall is within walking distance of the center of campus, and the University’s shuttle bus service makes frequent scheduled stops at Kentwood Hall.

luxuriate : Kentwood is a special building. It is downtown, which makes me feel I live off campus — but with all of the benefits of living on campus. I am close to all of my classes as well as downtown attractions. I have two fa-vorite areas in Kentwood. The first is the lobby.

It is pretty and vintage; I feel like I am in another era whenever I walk through the front doors. My other favorite area is the dining hall because it is intimate. Everyone tends to move the tables together; it’s like a big family dinner every day! I have made many friendships that I would not have made if I lived off campus.

Serious studying is a big part of the Scholars House residence

hall. This environment provides a special living option to 115

students who are members of the Honors College.

This suite-style residence hall provides single-gender living areas on two floors for all students who meet the special residency requirements and an additional coed floor only for upper-class students. benefit : One of the best things about living in Hutchens, or any of the residence halls, is the convenience. Everything you need is within walking distance from where you live. Hutchens House is unique because ResNet (the technology support network for residents) is located in the basement.

If anything goes wrong with my computer, it’s just a quick elevator ride down to the help desk. But my favorite area of Hutchens is the dining hall — it’s connected to the building. This is especially great in the winter since you don’t even have to leave the building to eat.

Sunvilla Tower* is a building where students can experience

high-rise living within walking distance of campus. The

18-story facility houses 186 upper-class men and women in

a coed environment. The spacious apartments are completely

The two-bedroom apartments house five students with two complete bathrooms. The one-bedroom apartments house either two or three students, all with one complete bathroom.

Limited underground parking spaces may be leased on a first-come, first-served basis. cultivate: I think my favorite thing about living in Sunvilla is the exposure to so many international students. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about different cultures. Sunvilla is also one of the tallest buildings in Springfield, so you can imagine how great the

view is. The pool is pretty nice, too — in what other residence hall can you come home after a long day and take a nice swim in the sun? Sunvilla residents often leave their doors open for visitors. Everyone in the building is friendly.

• Make sure to have your BearPass handy to sign into MyMissouriState.

• Applications and deposits received on or before March 1, 2011, will be assigned a room based on the student’s admission date. Applications and deposits received after March 1, 2011, will be assigned according to the date the deposit was received. To be complete, both the application and the deposit must be submitted!

• University offices will primarily communicate with you via your @live.missouristate.edu email account. Please check it often!

Apply

Complete your housing application first. The application will be found on MyMissouriState starting in January 2011. You will need to think about:

• which buildings you are interested in — review pages 26-45• what type of meal plan you want, and whether you want any

BearFare (it’s optional) — review pages 10-11• which student you would prefer to live with

Roommates

A roommate is someone who will be sleeping in the same bedroom as you. It is the department’s policy not to discriminate when assigning roommates. We do not allow private rooms during the fall semester. Private rooms may become available later in the year, but not at first.

All students will be assigned based on information the student provides on the housing application. We have a program called RoommateClick to help students find potential roommates, but use is optional and only intended to help those who are trying to locate a potential roommate. (For more information about RoommateClick, see reslife.missouristate.edu/signup.htm.)

Every effort will be made to honor mutual roommate requests (two students only). If you and another student want to live together, you must request each other on the housing application. We attempt to honor all mutual roommate requests, but you might not be assigned with your preferred roommate. If your preferred roommate is admitted to the University after you are, and submits a housing application after you submit yours, you might not be assigned together.

Suitemates

A suitemate is someone who lives in the same suite as you but does not sleep in the same bedroom as you. Every effort will be made to honor mutual suitemate requests, but our primary emphasis will be upon trying to honor your mutual roommate request.

Pay deposit

Next, pay your housing deposit. A $100 deposit is required from all students and must be received before your application is complete and you are able to move to the third step. This deposit is refundable based on the schedule below:

Room assignment

Next, be assigned to a building and a room. In order to be assigned, be sure that you have completed an application and paid your deposit. Current students are allowed first priority for room assignments in a process called Reapplication. Assignments for new incoming students will be made after Reapplication for current students, which starts in February. Assignments for new incoming students will begin in April, based on priority dates, and will be repeated every month until the new academic year has started.

October Housing application packets are mailed to admitted students.

January New students go online to complete the housing application!

March 1 Students with a completed housing application (including paid deposit) received by this date will maintain their admission date as their priority date.

March 2 Students with a completed housing application (including paid deposit) on this date and thereafter will have the date their completed housing application is received as their priority date.

April Housing assignments for new students begin. Additional assignments will be made in June, July and August.

We will attempt to assign you to a building of your choice, but assignments are based on availability of space and eligibility for a space (e.g. 24/2 visitation or Honors).

Supplemental student housing policy

Missouri State University requires all single students younger than 21 with fewer than 30 hours of transferable credit to live in University housing. The University also desires to accommodate all students requesting to live on campus. At times, the designed housing capacity of the residence halls is less than the demand for housing. A supplemental housing policy, therefore, has been established to accommodate the needs of all students and reads as follows:

When demand for on-campus housing exceeds the current designed capacity of the residence halls, supplemental or

“overflow” housing accommodations will be provided. These overflow accommodations may include:

• Increasing current residence hall living unit capacities (rooms/suites/apartments) by augmenting the number of beds and furniture to reasonably accommodate more students.

• Reconfiguring and furnishing other areas within housing facilities to reasonably accommodate more students, such as study lounges and other enclosed and secured areas.

• Reallocating and furnishing other University facilities to reasonably accommodate more students.

• Seeking off-campus accommodations such as hotels, motels and rental properties.

While overflow housing measures may pose some inconvenience to students, the University will make every effort to make these living accommodations as comfortable as possible, as well as provide some monetary credits. Students will be reassigned from overflow housing accommodations according to appropriate roommate-matching and when space within other on-campus housing facilities becomes available.

Missouri State University and the Department of Residence Life and Services have developed residence life policies and regulations designed to maximize individual freedom while defining students’ responsibilities as members of a residential community. Upon their arrival, students receive the Guide to Residence Hall Living. The Guide provides students with information related to all aspects of the residence life experience, including regulations and policies established for all residence halls. Major policies are summarized below.

Alcohol/drugs/tobacco

All alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all residence halls. In addition, the residence hall system demonstrates no tolerance regarding illegal drug use.

Missouri State University strives to ensure a healthy learning and working environment by promoting a culture of health and wellness. Beginning August 15, 2010, Missouri State University will take the first step toward becoming a tobacco-free campus. To learn more about the policy, designated smoking areas and programs to help you become tobacco free, go to www.missouristate.edu/tobaccofree/.

Quiet hours

Quiet hours are designed to help provide an atmosphere conducive to good scholarship. Minimum acceptable hours are from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. Students who would like a quieter environment may elect to live on a Quiet Living Environment floor which maintains quiet hours 22 hours a day during the week.

Guests and visitation

All visitors must be approved by all residents of the room, suite or apartment. Overnight guests are permitted only if the established visitation policies are not violated. All overnight guests should be registered at the reception desk. Visitation policies vary for each residence hall, indicating the time frame during which guests may visit a resident’s room. Residents of Kentwood Hall, Sunvilla Tower, two upper-class floors in Hutchens House, one upper-class floor in Scholars House and the upper-class floors on the east wing of Wells House maintain 24-hour visitation privileges seven days a week.Blair-Shannon House, Freudenberger House, Hammons House, Wells House (all main and west wing floors), Woods House and all single-gender floors in Hutchens House and Scholars House maintain 24-hour visitation privileges on the weekends only.

Regardless of established visitation policies, no guest may reside for more than two nights per week in any residence hall. Room/suitemates and residence life staff have final say regarding all guests regardless of the visitation policy.

Terms

The Student Housing Contract is for the entire academic year (both fall and spring semesters), or the remaining portion of the academic year at the time of occupancy. Blair-Shannon House, Freudenberger House, Kentwood Hall, Wells House and Woods House are closed during Winter Break and Spring Break. Hammons House, Hutchens House, Scholars House and Sunvilla Tower are open during all vacation periods.

Security deposit

The intent of the $100 security deposit is to assure the University of a student’s continued occupancy for the complete contract period. To receive a full refund of the security deposit, the student must complete the contract according to the terms and conditions of that contract.

Contract cancellation

To cancel a contract prior to opening day of the residence halls, written notification must be received by the Department of Residence Life and Services. The online notice is found at http://reslife.missouristate.edu/contractcancellation.htm. The date when written notification is received by the department will be used as the date of contract cancellation. Security deposit refunds are made according to the terms and conditions of the contract. If an individual is to remain a student at Missouri State and wishes to cancel the contract, the student must request permission from the Department of Residence Life and Services before the contract will be canceled.

Q: When may I move into my room?

A: The residence halls open for students residing in the Living-Learning Communities (LLC) on Thursday before the first day of classes, beginning at 8:00 a.m. All other residents may begin moving in on Friday before the first day of classes, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Upon arrival, you will need to check in at your assigned residence hall reception desk. No one will be allowed to check in earlier unless residing on an LLC floor.

Q: Will I have telephone service in my room?

A: The University will provide local telephone service upon request. Students wishing to have local service may contact Residence Life and Services for installation. There will be an installation charge of $50, and then a monthly $20 charge. If you decide to change rooms during the year and wish to keep your phone service, there will be a $50 charge for the transfer.

Q: Is cable television service available?

A: Cable hook-ups and extended basic service are provided in each residence hall living unit. You may contract for additional cable services through the local cable company at the regular rate.

Q: There is a $12 per semester Residence Hall Association (RHA) activity fee included in the

housing contract rates. What is it used for?

A: This fee is distributed, through RHA, to each residence hall for the implementation of social, educational and hall enrichment programs and activities.

Q: Where will I be able to do my laundry?A: Laundry facilities are located in each residence hall at no

additional charge.

Q: Are my personal belongings insured?

A: As the University cannot be held accountable for loss, damage or theft of any student’s personal property, all students are highly encouraged to purchase “renter’s insurance” or verify adequate coverage on their parent’s family insurance. For more information regarding residence hall personal property insurance, please visit www.nssi.com or www.collegestudentinsurance.com. These two companies provide competitive personal property insurance coverage for residence hall students.

Q: May I change my hall assignment?

A: The Department of Residence Life and Services accepts requests from students who wish to transfer to another residence hall. Requests are granted on a first-come, first-served basis as space becomes available. Students may submit an online Room Change Request at MyMissouriState.

Q: Are meals included with my residence hall assignment?

A: Meal plans are included in the Student Housing Contract rates and are required for Blair-Shannon House, Freudenberger House, Hammons House, Hutchens House, Kentwood Hall, Scholars House, Wells House and Woods House.

Q: May I change my meal plan?

A: Residents may change meal plans at MyMissouriState. You may decrease your meal plan before the semester begins or during the first three weeks of a semester.

Q: May I receive a refund of my deposit before the semester

begins?

A: This deposit is refundable for incoming students until July 1 preceding a fall semester, December 1 preceding a spring semester and May 1 preceding a summer semester. This deposit is refundable for returning students until June 1 preceding a fall semester, December 1 preceding a spring semester and May 1 preceding a summer semester. You will need to cancel your contract in writing or submit an online request at reslife.missouristate.edu/contractcancellation.htm.
