Today we have two examples that can help us reflect on what it means to “pray always.”

The first is Moses, holding his arms up so that the Israelites will have the better of the battle. This is a common posture for prayer in the ancient world, and the Bible is full of references to one’s lifting up hands (and arms) in prayer. The second example is from the parable Jesus uses to demonstrate the principle of praying always: the widow who persistently pestered a judge from whom she demanded justice. Moses’s prayer is a continuous movement extended over a period of time; the widow’s petition is repeated at frequent intervals over time. The Church’s rich tradition of prayer sets before us examples of both kinds of prayer. It is possible to “pray always.” Early monks who lived as hermits in the deserts of Egypt and Syria took the command to “pray always” so seriously that everything in their life was arranged to maximize the time for continuous prayer. The monks’ disciplines to that end were likened to that of athletes; the practice of all-night prayer was one that was especially admired.

The Church’s primary model for persistent, repeated prayer is the Liturgy of the Hours, which flows from the principle that daily prayer at given times consecrates all of time as well as the work done the rest of the time. Each gathering time is known as an Hour. The most significant Hours are Morning and Evening Prayer (known also as Lauds and Vespers). The prominence of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Church’s tradition is why so many other Catholic prayers and devotions are similarly anchored in time: the Angelus (morning, noon, evening), daily rosary, or prayers arranged for morning and evening found in almost all Catholic prayer books.

Regardless of how we pray, our call as disciples is to become persons of prayer with hearts more and more open to the voice of God in prayer. In the end, this is what it means to “pray always.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. T ’ R

T T Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! —James Field, Copyright © J. T -N S O T D Y K ? KNOW THE SIGNS OF DENIAL. Denial is a commonly used defense mechanism for abuse victims. Because they want to believe that things will go back to normal, victims often feel trapped into just allowing the situation to play out. Fear of change can be overwhelming, especially if the victim has been manipulated by his or her abuser. Victims may also struggle with accepting what’s happening because they know their abuser closely, as a family member or friend. It’s important to recognize the signs of denial and how to break through those barriers that can keep a victim from true healing.

Hoy tenemos dos ejemplos que pueden ayudarnos a reflexionar en lo que significa “rezar siempre”.

El primero es Moisés, sosteniendo sus brazos en lo alto para que los israelitas tuvieran la mejor batalla. Esta es una postura común de orar en el mundo antiguo, y la Biblia tiene muchas referencias a quien en oración eleva las manos (y los brazos). El segundo ejemplo es de la parábola que Jesús cuenta para demostrar el principio de rezar siempre: la viuda que persistentemente molestaba al juez de quien buscaba justicia. La oración de Moisés es un movimiento extendido por un periodo de tiempo; la petición de la viuda se repite en intervalos frecuentes en el tiempo. La rica tradición de la Iglesia de rezar pone ante nosotros ejemplos de ambos tipos de oraciones. Es Posible “Rezar Siempre”. Los primeros monjes que vivieron como ermitaños en los desiertos de Egipto y Siria tomaron seriamente el mandamiento de “rezar siempre” y todo aquello en sus vidas estaba acomodado para maximizar el tiempo para la oración continua. Las disciplinas de esos monjes con ese fin se compararon con la de los atletas; la práctica de rezar durante toda la noche fue una especialmente admirada. El primer modelo de la Iglesia para la oración continua y repetida es la Liturgia de las Horas, el cual fluye del principio de que la oración diaria en ciertos momentos consagra todo el tiempo también como el trabajo que se realiza el resto del tiempo. A cada tiempo de reunión se le conoce como una Hora. Las Horas más significantes son la Oración de la Mañana y la Oración de la Noche (conocidas como Laudes y Vísperas). La prominencia de la Liturgia de las Horas en la tradición de la Iglesia es la razón por la cual muchas otras oraciones y devociones católicas están ancladas igualmente en el tiempo: el Ángelus (mañana, medio día, noche), el rezo diario del rosario u oraciones arregladas para la mañana y noche que están en casi todos los libros de oraciones católicas. Independientemente de la forma en cómo recemos, nuestra llamada como discípulos es llegar a ser personas de oración con corazones más y más abiertos a la voz de Dios en la oración. ¿S U ? CONOZCA LAS SEÑALES DE LA NEGACIÓN. La negación es un mecanismo de defensa comúnmente usado por las víctimas de abuso. Debido a que quieren creer que las cosas volverán a ser normales, las víctimas por lo regular se sienten atrapadas en el hecho de haber permitido que la situación se desarrollara. El miedo al cambio puede ser abrumador, especialmente si la víctima ha sido manipulada por su abusador o abusadora. Las víctimas también pueden tener dificultades para aceptar lo que está pasando porque su abusador es alguien cercano, como un miembro o amigo de la familia. Es importante reconocer las señales de negación y cómo romper esas barreras que evitan que la víctima tenga una verdadera sanación.

T N F En 1823 se fundó el pueblo de San Rafael de las Quebradillas en Puerto Rico. Este pueblo fue dedicado al santo patrón de los pescadores. Rafael, también es el ángel patrono de la salud. Aunque hoy día su fiesta esta combinada con los otros arcángeles el 29 de septiembre, en el viejo calendario este santo fue conmemorado el 24 de octubre. Rafael (Dios salva) se encuentra en el libro de Tobías y según el autor bíblico, este ángel es el ángel de la guarda de Tobías. El mismo Rafael se presenta como uno de los siete ángeles o arcángeles que llevan las oraciones de los justos al trono de Dios y que gozan de la presencia gloriosa del Santísimo (Tobías 12:15). Mi padre siempre dice que hay que pedir una cosa a Dios, la salud. Si tenemos la salud nada nos falta. Es interesante que en latín, salud y salvación son la misma palabra, salus. Special thanks to the donors who support the Parish Repair Fund, and all the volunteers who work in the projects, organize the parish, and clean up the Church and its premises. center. Completed Projects: • Repadding of the church’s kneelers end caps completed. • Pest control treatment done in July 2019. • Removed and installed new Parish Census database. • Installed 4 new water heater in the Parish Center,

Center completed in 2017. • Exterior painting of the Church; re-upholstery of the

church’s front/back chairs; repair of the crying room; remodel of the Church restrooms; major termite repair/treatment completed in 2017.

Thank you for your generous service in our Archdiocese. All priests, employees and volunteers are required to complete re-certification training in a Safe Environment program every four years. Please drop off a copy of your current certificate to the Office; if your certificate had expired, it is your obligation to find the soonest scheduled class to take it and comply with this utmost urgent matter. We are under very strict scrutiny to comply with the archdiocesan policies adopted under the Charter for the Protection of Minors established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its annual compliance audit.

Classes are offered continually at various parishes on a rotating basis
