It is an honor and a great pleasure to address to the scientific and industrial communities
of biotechnology, comprising students, professors, researchers, company executives,
government staff, and entrepreneurs, a special invitation to actively participate in the
AFOB Summer Forum 2016 that is scheduled to take place in Qingdao, China, from
16-19 August 2016. The Organizing Committee has developed a hard work to present
the most advanced issues on biotechnology, which will be discussed by a selected group
of international speakers and lecturers, recommended by the Conference Scientific
Committee.
The forum is hosted by Chinese Society of Biotechnology and China University of
Petroleum. To better design and guide the large numbers of participants of the forum it
was proposed five sessions covering different fields of biotechnology, including
Emerging Diseases, Functional Foods, Biopharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and Free Topics.
Each session will focus on specific topics for oral presentations and posters selected
from the abstracts submitted.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of the Scientific and
Organizing Committee and volunteers for their huge efforts to make this forum possible.
We are also very grateful to the forum sponsors for their support. Last but not least, we
thank all of you, our biotechnology family, for your great contributions which make the
forum possible and successful.
It is our promise to do the best to make this forum most fruitful and your visit to
Qingdao most pleasant.
Sincerely,
Forum Chairs of AFOB Summer Forum 2016

Precision Medicine and Antigen Selection
George F. Gao
Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China
Professor George F. Gao obtained his PhD (DPhil) degree from Oxford University, UK and did his postdoc
work in both Oxford University and Harvard University (with a brief stay in Calgary University). His research
interests include enveloped viruses and molecular immunology. His group research is mainly focusing on the
enveloped virus entry and release, esp. influenza virus interspecies transmission (host jump), structure-based drug-
design and structural immunology. He is also interested in virus ecology, esp. the relationship between influenza
virus and migratory birds or live poultry markets and the bat-derived virus ecology and molecular biology. He has
published more than 380 peer-reviewed papers, 11 books or book chapters and has applied and obtained more than
25 UK, US and Chinese patents. His research has recently expanded on public health policy and global health
strategy. He led the China CDC team in 2014 (From Sep. to Nov.) to work in Sierra Leone for fighting against Ebola
and his heroic role there has made a great deal for the field work. Gao is a member (academician) of Chinese
Academy of Sciences, a fellow of The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS, also known as The World
Academy of Sciences), a fellow of American Academy of Microbiology (AAM)and an associate member of EMBO.
Gao is a recipient of several international and national awards, including TWAS Medical Prize (2012), Nikkei Asian
Prize (2014) and HLHL S&T Advancement Award (2015).
