Pastoral planning at St. Kilian Parish

Grace and peace to you fromGod our Father and the LordJesus Christ! “May God whobegan this good work in youbring it to completion in ChristJesus.” The Parish SteeringCommittee has been meetingon developing a Pastoral Plan

for St. Kilian since last fall 2014. We have participatedwith neighboring parishes, in a Planning Workshop ledby the diocese. We have been advised that a parishstudy will assist our efforts in creating a Parish VisionStatement, to accompany the Mission Statement thatnow appears in our bulletin.

The Mission Statement is a word picture of whereSt. Kilian’s parish is at the present time. “The Catholicfamily of St. Kilian parish seeks to be a vibrant, welcoming community of faith, guided by the HolySpirit, nourished by God’s word and the Eucharist, andcommitted to witnessing God in and through ourneighbors.”

The Vision Statement will describe where St.Kilian’s parish leadership sees itself in the future. Inorder to have a clear idea about the future we need tounderstand where we are in the present. A parish study, professionally administered, will assist our efforts. AVision Statement is by definition a word picture of afuture that is different from the present. That futurewill require change in order to come into being. Theprograms and apostolates already in place will, ofcourse, continue. The vision statement will be limitedto no more than five major initiatives.

For example, since our Mission Statement makesclear that the Eucharist, prayer and hospitality arecentral to our parish, the Vision Statement mayindicate that we need to develop warmer and morehospitable masses (the development of a “HospitalityMinistry”), as well as more opportunities outside ofSunday mass for praying with Scripture in smallgroups. (as was done in the past at St. Kilian withRenew 2000).

A sample goal of the Vision Statement might read:(“By May, 2017, 50% of adult churchgoers will beparticipating in small group faith sharing.)

The Center For Applied Research in the Apostolate(CARA), located at Georgetown University, is asociological study organization used extensively bythe US Catholic Bishops conference. We would liketo employ their services. CARA offers a Parish LifeSurvey:

“From its pool of nearly 600 nationally testedquestions, CARA will design a questionnaire foryour parish that will provide an overall picture ofparish life, including in-depth analyses of issuesfacing the parish, evaluations of parish programs, assessments of parishioner needs, and ademographic profile. The Parish Life NarrativeReport includes: Executive Summary; easy to readnarrative of the patterns in the data; tables, chartsand graphs explaining major findings; onecomparison between parish groups, such ascomparisons between generations of parishioners,by level of involvement in parish life, by massregularly attended, or by language of response tothe survey; and response frequencies for allquestions.”

The CARA survey is administered to all Massattendees during the weekend masses on aparticular weekend. Completing the questionnairetakes between 10 and 15 minutes. CARA charges:$2500 base price, +1 dollar per processedquestionnaire. We average around 1500 adults perweekend. Total: $4000.The results of the survey willbe given to all parishioners. Once we receive theresults of the Survey, we can dedicate a Follow-UpWeekend and highlight all the findings as well askey issues for parish leadership to consider. CARAoffers the services of a CARA associate to assistour Action Plan if we wish. The St. Kilian SteeringCommittee will be charged with writing The VisionStatement. They will be meeting Monday June 29,2015. It is expected that the CARA Parish Studyquestionnaire weekend will be calendared forSeptember 2015. Please keep our Pastoral Planningin your prayers. If you have some constructivethoughts or ideas, email me or Jim Porter, theSteering Committee Chair [email protected]

Peace, Father Bruce

As you know the St. Kilian Players are infull swing for their 28th summer show which isgoing to be the well beloved and criticallyacclaimed- “Kiss Me Kate.” The show will takeplace in late July with ticket information to follow. Many people are hard at work getting it ready sothat the St. Kilian Players tradition will continue. However, at this time there is still a real need formore help, especially in some of the productionaspects of the show like set design andconstruction, lighting, props, ticket sales, househelp and many other areas. When the St. Kilian Players committed tocontinuing in the seven year tradition that wasfounded by Father Chuck Romano, it did so byplacing an emphasis on the mottos “give, not get”and “we not I.” These were not meant to be triteor pithy sayings but rather the undercurrent ofmotivation for all St. Kilian Players. For the mostpart they have proven to be just that. Whatevercrossroads or challenges the St. Kilian Playersfaced, they were met with these guiding mottos. A few weeks ago, our parish celebratedanother Stewardship Time and Talent MinistryFair to showcase and invite more parishioners togive of their time and talent in our many andvaried parish ministries. One of those ministriesfor 28 years has been the St. Kilian Players. Inorder to successfully mount this year’s summerproduction, there is a need for more time andtalent to be shared by parishioners. Whether youare a new person or a dormant St. Kilian Player, what you can do is needed. There is a place foreveryone. The commitment, depending on whatyou do will be over in less than two months. The St. Kilian Players began and hascontinued because members have made thecommitment, many on a yearly basis, to put ittogether bit by bit. There has been a value thatwent beyond the personal to a desire of givingback to God for all he has given us. So please, ifpossible, ponder the “we, not I” and “give, not get”part of your soul and if possible give a call andget involved either again or for the first time.Hope to hear from you soon and definitely at theshow in July.

JUNE 21, 201512th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” Incredible.Unbelievable. Miraculous. What a sight to behold. If only we hadbeen there with those disciples! What a help it would be to ourwavering faith to see Jesus calm the waves. Could we ever doubtagain that he was Lord of all creation after a moment like that?

Well ... maybe. These remarkable moments do have a way oflosing their luster from a distance. In retrospect, we too often second-guess such episodes of spiritual clarity: “Perhaps it was just acoincidence. Maybe the storm was about to end anyway. How canwe know for sure?” In fact, it appears as though the disciplesthemselves were already struggling with forgetting the power of thesigns they had previously seen. This is why Jesus reprimands thembecause of their fear, “Do you not yet have faith?”

Why does Jesus expect them to have faith already? Because,as Mark’s Gospel records for us, Jesus had already cured countlesspeople, cast out demons for all to see, and even had a divine voiceannounce at his baptism, “You are my beloved Son; with you I amwell pleased,” (1:11). The miracles were not in short supply. Theproblem was believing in the miracles even after they were over.

Let’s not fall prey to the same problem, thirsting for othermiracles than the ones we have already experienced in our ownlives, subtle though they may have been. Let’s not make our faithdependent upon the appearance of the next sign from God. No. Letus join the psalmist in maintaining an attitude of belief, as we thankthe Lord for “his wondrous deeds to the children of men.”

No másviolencia, muerte y destrucción.
