In modern military aircraft avionics, sensor systems and weapons depend on data uploads to function properly. Mission Planning software should aim to provide tools to efficiently analyse and plan the mission and prepare the data for upload. Debriefing software must provide means for effective mission playback, enabling crews to focus on task execution in operational missions and on effective learning in training missions. Data storage and analysis tools should be capable of providing quick and effective mission reports to provide inputs for follow-on missions. Mission Planning and Mission Debrief are

essential for effective Mission Execution.

In modern military aircraft avionics, sensor

systems and weapons depend on data

uploads to function properly. Mission

Planning software should aim to provide

tools to efficiently analyse and plan the

mission and prepare the data for upload.

New systems, new weapons, new tasks

and new missions will call for adaptation or

extension of existing planning systems.

Debriefing software must provide means for effective mission playback, enabling crews to focus on task execution in operational missions and on effective learning in training missions. Data storage and analysis tools should be capable of providing quick and effective mission reports to provide inputs for follow-on missions. In training scenarios, these tools must be capable of providing insight to lessons learned and to report possible incidents and hazards.NLR has the knowledge and experience to provide support and software tools to improve these air force mission support processes.

KnowledgeNLR is the prime aerospace research, development, test, and evaluation organisation in the Netherlands. NLR has knowledge about all aspects of aviation – technology, regulations, training, and operations. The advice and solutions we provide are always based on up-to-date knowledge of systems, tools and procedures. Regarding mission support tools, we not only understand the required systems and software; we also know about the aircraft, missions, avionics, rules and regulations that must be supported. This enables us to quickly understand the user’s needs and provide adequate solutions, tailored to the specific situation.

ExperienceNLR has been involved in support of military mission planning since the F-104G Starfighter days in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, in the early 1970’s. State of the art computer-based support was provided for F-16 mission planning during the 80’s and early 90’s. The F-16 Mid-Life Update programme brought with it the Portable Flight Planning System (PFPS) in 1997 and NLR switched to providing plug-in enhancements for that. Around the same time, the AH-64 Apache helicopter was introduced, that would also use PFPS for planning. NLR has provided software that enables crews of other helicopter types to use PFPS for their planning and aircraft data loading. For the AS532 Cougar helicopters, a whole new data loading system, using USB memory drives, was developed by NLR. Since 2009, JMPS started to replace PFPS for F-16 mission planning and NLR has converted its existing tools for JMPS interoperability and builds new solutions integrated with the JMPS framework. Our specific mission support systems experience is solidly backed by NLR’s knowledge and experience in the fields of military operations, weapons effectiveness, electronic warfare, stores certification and avionics. Using all this, we can provide integral solutions to complex problems.

ProductsSome examples of our products:• Data management and data loading software for AS532

Cougar and CH-47F(NL).• Digital map management and loading software for

CH-47F(NL).• Microsoft® Excel based Mission Data Cards, Bomb logs, A-A

shot logs for F-16.• Debrief & Lessons identified database tool, including

recorded mission playback overlay.• Mission Planning Environment - network/server-based,

integrated storage and retrieval of mission data, imagery, documents etc.

• PDIB/xNOTAM parsing and overlay generation for PFPS and JMPS.

• Many smaller editors and plugins for specific planning tasks, integrated in PFPS and JMPS.
