Funding for MBOTMA provided in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and private donors.

From MBOTMA President Peter Albrecht:Word spreads fast, but if you had not heard prior to receiving this month’s magazine, Jed Malischke is retiring at the end of this year from his position as Executive Director of MBOTMA. See his accompanying letter on this page.

I’m going to skip the “what on earth are we going to do?” (the Board has already formed a committee to address this) and simply express the thanks we all owe Jed for his 28 or 29 years (historians disagree on the exact count) with MBOTMA.

As you undoubtedly know, Jed has been and is MBOTMA. From the August Festival, to the other festivals and events, he has been doing it all for a long time. In addition to his never ending work planning, promoting and running various events, he has had all the management responsibilities for every aspect of the entire organization.

To say he will be missed does not come close to expressing all that he has done for our organization and all he means to us.

On behalf of all of us, thank you, Jed, for your tireless dedi-cation to MBOTMA. —Peter Albrecht

From Executive Director Jed Malischke:I am writing to tell you all, the membership and volunteers of MBOTMA, that I have chosen to retire from the position of MBOTMA Executive Director effective December 31, 2015.

I would have liked to inform you and thank you all person-ally, and in some manner other than a letter in the magazine, but of course that is impossible. There are just too many of you to whom I owe a debt of gratitude.

This is not a spur of the moment decision, but rather a life decision that I have been contemplating, and preparing both myself and MBOTMA for, for some time. For myself, I hope it is an opportunity to do some other things that I have been unable to do up to now. For MBOTMA, I hope it is an opportu-nity for the organization to move ahead to the future with new talents and energies.

To depart MBOTMA has been no easy decision on my part, for it is how I have spent most of my adult life. It is especially difficult to let go of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival, which I first took on as Festival Director some 29 years ago and has been my main passion for most of my career. I want to especially thank all you volunteers who come back year after year and make it all possible. None of us could have accomplished alone all that we have done together. For me the MBOTMA Festival has been the Event of the Year every year since we moved to Camp In The Woods and then on to El Rancho Mañana. Thank you one and all.

And now back to business. As the MBOTMA Board has started a search for a new director, I felt it also appropriate to resign my position as committee chair for the MBOTMA

Festival, so as not to inhibit new management of the organization.

What I’ve witnessed over the years gives me great faith that all the volunteers involved will be able to keep things going just fine and help new management to learn as they go. And if you have ever considered stepping up to the plate as a MBOTMA committee member (for whatever event), now would be a great time to do so. Maybe there is even one of you out there who will have an interest in chairing the MBOTMA Festival Staff for the next year or two (it could lead to a career of your own). Think about it and let me know at [email protected] and I will pass your name on to the appropriate person.—A friend of bluegrass, Jed Malischke

We mark the passing of Rev. Dick Dugan, who died September 4, 2015.

Dick was an active MBOTMA member, officiating many of the church services at our events. He also repaired, restored and sold acoustic instruments through Richard Dugan Violins, and taught beginner stringed instrument lessons to countless students, youth and adults alike, over his years of ministry.

Dick and his wife Priscilla served in pastoral ministry mostly in the Upper Midwest, across 13 churches over 58 years. They had five children.

The Harvest Jam Acoustic Music Experience is scheduled for November 20–22, 2015, at the Marriott Minneapolis West Hotel, 9960 Wayzata Boulevard, St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Headlining the weekend will be IBMA Emerging Artists of the year Flatt Lonesome. This will be the tenth year for the Jam and the Race For A Place Band Contest, held there annually.

Porcupine Creek was the 2014 Race For A Place Champion. They recently performed their winning spot at the 2015 MBOTMA Festival. First runner-up No Man’s Stringband played the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff in May.

The second runner-up was Pushing Chain (cover photo), who will open for the headliners on Saturday night at the Harvest Jam Acoustic Music Experience.

Pushing Chain, featuring Boyd Blomberg (guitar and vocals) and Adam Moe (fiddle and vocals), has been win-ning fans throughout the midwest with their Americana-roots sound, including invitations to sing the National Anthem at a Twins/White Sox game and to open for Bill Staines in Hayward, WI. Most recently, they finished second in the MBOTMA-sponsored Minnesota Bluegrass Vocal Duet Championships at the Minnesota State Fair.

The purpose of the contest was ini-tially to provide an alternative method by which member bands could pursue a place onstage at the MBOTMA Festival. It has since evolved into an avenue of entry for several of MBOTMA’s events, including the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff and the Harvest Jam itself.

The Harvest Jam organizing commit-tee added new prizes to the competition in 2013. Their goal was to encourage more bands to participate and give more recognition to the first and second runners-up. In addition to the Race Champions prize of a $1,000 contract for a Saturday set on the main stage at the 2016 Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time

Music Festival, the first runners-up receive a $600 contract for a Saturday main stage set at the 2016 Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff, and the second runners-up receive a $400 contract for a Saturday night main stage set at the 2016 Harvest Jam. In addition, all participat-ing bands receive a one year band mem-bership to MBOTMA (worth $75).

Each competing group performs for 20 minutes and is judged by a panel of three to four judges. The scoring criteria includes playing together and in time with each other, playing in tune individ-ually and together as a band, singing in tune and blending vocally, emcee work and interaction with the audience, stage presence and showmanship, choice of repertoire and original material, per-sonal and performance appearance, and desirability of hiring them to represent MBOTMA at the festivals. The maxi-mum point score is 100.

Of course there will be plenty of other activities at the Harvest Jam. There will be concerts both Friday and Saturday night, a Saturday night ban-quet, workshops and theme jams on

Saturday afternoon, exhibitors, Kip’s Live, the hayloft jam rooms, and a Sunday morning gospel show.

A weekend ticket that includes every-thing except the banquet dinner can be purchased in advance for $35 ($30 for members). You can upgrade that to a “VIP ticket” that includes the dinner for an additional $20 (dinner tickets are limited and advance purchase is usually required). Daily admission prices at the door will be $20 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Teens are half price and kids under 12 are always free (except for dinner).

For more information and advance tickets for the Harvest Jam Acoustic Music Experience call 800-635-3037 or visit www.MinnesotaBluegrass.org. For hotel reservations (you won’t want to go home) contact the Marriott Hotel at 952-544-4400 and ask for the Minnesota Bluegrass Festival rate. The Minneapolis Marriott West is located in Saint Louis Park, near the intersection of Hwy 169 and I-394.

The first-ever (or 14th annual, depending on which way you look at it) Minnesota Bluegrass Duet Championships took place at the Minnesota State Fair over Labor Day weekend. This year, we changed the event and invited instru-mental duets to compete on the second day, rather than holding a flatpicking guitar competition as in previous years.

The Vocal Duets turned up on Friday, September 4. It was a hot, slightly over-cast day, typical of State Fair weather but definitely on the warm side. We had an excellent set of contenders for the prizes,

but in the end, the duet of Lincoln Potter and Scott Stebbins came in as first place winners. It was Scott’s first trip to the Duet Champion-ships, but Lincoln had previously won the con-test in 2008

Minnesota’s top vocal and instrumental duets take the stage at the State FairBy Katryn Conlin

with Kathe Liners as his partner, and he placed in the top five in 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, and 2003. It was great to see lots of new faces and younger “roots music” players among the competitors. KARE 11 and Fox 9 TV also covered the contest that afternoon.

Instrumental Duets competed on Saturday, September 5. You know the saying “It’s not the heat, it’s the humid-ity”? Well, that afternoon it was both, as the temperature neared the 90s with very high humidity! Only the bravest of souls dared approach the stage under such demanding conditions. The duet of Kyle Baker and Dan Caton came in as first place winners. Kyle has competed in the flat picking guitar contest in previous years, placing third in 2014 and fourth in 2013. We have to give a shout out to judges Karen Mueller and Bill and Sarah Cagley who filled time by performing during the scoring.

As always, our thanks go out to everyone who volunteered, especially Jana Metge, who has served as event chair for the past three years.

Our gold sponsors this year were The Podium Premium Guitars and Willie’s

American Guitars. Silver sponsors were Hoffman Guitars, LaPlant Instruments and The Guitar Shop. Be sure to thank them when you stop by their businesses.

It’s always great for Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association to be repre-sented at the fair and we appreciate the opportunity!

“Learning how to express who you are on your chosen instrument is a life-long challenge and ultimately the most satisfying thing you could do for yourself and for those around you. I truly believe this with all my heart.

I can think of nothing better then to share my musical knowledge and experience with others who are struggling with their own journeys of self-expression through music.

Nothing tickles me more then to see that light bulb go on above my student’s head.”

Lessons with Peter Ostroushko, world-class fiddle & mandolin player

Peter teaches in his studio at MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis and via Skype with students around the world.

Bluegrass Saturday MorningBy Phil Nusbaum

October brings the music indoorsIt is good for me to remember that the Bluegrass Season doesn’t come to a close with the end of October, it’s just the outdoor bluegrass season that winds down. As time goes on, we’ve noticed many more bluegrass opportunities in October and onward. Plus, it’s the time of year for serious woodshedding on an instrument, and learning new songs.

Fall is the beginning of the busy season for the Bluegrass Review show. It actually began in September when we presented the fruits of last April’s interviewing trip to Ohio, and we plan to be working on new “Gems of Bluegrass” and recording addi-tional interviews in the coming months.

I hope that listeners continue to enjoy the show. Our audeince has caught on that the identity of the Bluegrass Review is a little different than Bluegrass Saturday Morning.

The KBEM Fund DriveThe last few fund drives, we’ve cut out the really long fund-rais-ing segments. A typical fund-raising break gives a few facts about bluegrass on the radio and encourages listeners to call in with their pledges, and not much else.

We make fewer and shorter fund-raising breaks than those of a few years ago. As a result, the mood of fund-raising edi-tions is lighter, and fund-raising editions of our shows are more entertaining.

Fall fund-raising editions of Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review are scheduled for 7 a.m. to noon on October 10 and 17. Fund raising editions of the Bluegrass Review will be heard on other Bluegrass Review outlets, too.

My hope is that the audience for bluegrass continues to grow, and that more listeners will contribute to keeping blue-grass strong on the radio.

The Bluegrass Review is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Phil Nusbaum is new Hall of Famer MBOTMA’s own Phil Nusbaum, host of local KBEM radio show “Bluegrass Saturday Morning” and the nationally syndicated “Bluegrass Review,” was inducted into America’s Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame on September 3, at the 40th Annual Old-Time Music Festival in LeMars, Iowa.

We’ll do a bigger article touting Phil’s accomplishements in November. Until then, you can read a nice piece by Larry Englund in the September 2 edition of the Highland Villager.

Congratulations, Phil!—JoAnne Makela, editor
