October 1996

To My Fellow WNYC Listeners,

0 ne very big part of WNYC's mission is to keep you in touch with the many per-forming arts - music, theatre, dance, spoken word, etc. - that make New York the

cultural capital of the world. We are pleased to be the official radio partner (for the 1996-97 season) of Carnegie Hall,

an institution that has presented the very best musical events in New York for more thana century. Like WNYC, its existence was once threatened, but thanks to Isaac Stern andothers, Carnegie Hall has not only survived but flourished as a world -class concert hall. Onthe next page, Judith Arron, Carnegie Hall's Executive Director, offers her preview of the1996-97 season. Also, stay tuned to WNYC for updates throughout the season.

WNYC is entering its twelfth season of partnership with Symphony Space inproducing the Selected Shorts series. It can be a riveting experience to hear the worksof Edgar Allen Poe or Grace Paley brought to life on the air. Our partnerships withthe Frick and the World Music Institute produce two very different, but equallyvital, music series - The Frick Collection and Worlds of Music. Like Selected Shorts, theseseries share performances not just with New Yorkers but with the entire country, through national distribution agreements.

I'm delighted to welcome our new Vice President of Programming and Operations,Arthur Cohen, to WNYC. He is committed to connecting WNYC even more with the ail-tural life of the New York area. Arthur has a native New Yorker's intuitive feel for the pulseand sophistication of the city. He has the creative leadership and the passion for program-ming that makes WNYC the homebase for you, the curious, thoughtful radio listener.

You are as much our partners as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, and the other won-derful organizations with which we work. We have the commitment; we need yourongoing help to provide the resources. I hope you will show your support in our mem-bership drive later this month.

Sincerely,

Laura WalkerWalkerPresident & CEO, WNYC Foundation

Carnegie Hall Preview

Judith Arron

E

T

WNYC is the officialradio partner ofCarnegie Hall's 1996-97 season. We askedJudith Arron, CarnegieHall Executive Director,

for some insights ontheir upcoming seasonand mission.

Whenever we approach the start of anew season at Carnegie Hall, I feel, along with great anticipation, a renewedsense of amazement at the tradition ofthe place, and then pride in the newchapter of that tradition of excellenceabout to begin. I always think that eachnew year is the best one yet, and 1996-97 is overflowing with major events andexciting new projects. A Brahms festival,a Schubert focus, the best of the world'sorchestras and soloists, the Carnegie HallJazz Band, intimate evenings in WeillRecital Hall - the quality of the concertexperience here is unmatched.

While we fill each season with stel-lar performers and programs for ouraudiences, some of our most importantwork is what we are doing to encour-age the composing, music -making, andlistening of the next generation. A slateof new projects titled "Carnegie 2000"encompasses a wide range of content, from a young artists debut series inWeill Recital Hall, to a series of FamilyConcerts with world -class artists and $5tickets, to a Carnegie Hall Composer'sChair, through which we are bringingthe music and ideas of appointee EllenTaaffe Zwilich to our audiences.

We are continually trying to forgenew pathways into music and intoCarnegie Hall so that the qualityonstage may be experienced by asmany people as possible. This is whyour partnership with WNYC, its audi-ences, and its commitment to musicand this City is so important. We areboth party to the mission of seeding thefuture of great music and great listeningin the years ahead. Please join us!

Arthur Cohen

WELCOME"It's great to be back in New York. I love thesmell of the subway. It takes me back to myyouth... an electrical smell makes me feel like akid again!" says Arthur Cohen, WNYC's newVice President of Programming and Operations.

Born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Arthurcomes to WNYC from Minnesota Public Radio."My father was a classical music listener," saysCohen. "As a teenager, I listened to everythingbut classical music. I rebelled... I listened to

Cousin Brucie and Murray the K on my transistorradio. As I grew older, my appetite for classical music returned."

At Minnesota Public Radio, universally recognized as a premiere member of thepublic radio system, Cohen oversaw two regional networks - one news and infor-mation and the other, classical music. At WNYC he directs all programming andoperations for WNYC AM820 and FM93.9.

"Independence from the city gives us an opportunity to inject vitality into thestation. It is a unique opportunity to connect with the community and to makepresent, on the air, the incredible culture of the city," says Cohen. "I am extremelyexcited to join WNYC at this time."

SelectedShorts

1Season

Now entering its twelfth season, Selected Shortsis popular not only in New York but around thecountry, through NPR distribution. Isaiah Shefferhosts the series at Symphony Space as well asWNYC's radio series.

"I enjoy the two different hustings. Toget up in front of our most wonderful liveaudience at Symphony Space is one kind offun. Then it is a completely different kind ofjoy to work with WNYC producer Sarah Montague and KathyMinton, Symphony Space producer, and to assemble the livereadings from all over the country and create a radio show.

"People just love listening to a good story. Selected Shorts is sopopular because, I believe, there is still a hunger, a deep-rooted desire - maybefrom childhood or from past generations of storytelling - for a story to be read tous. It is very soothing."

For Isaiah the audience is very much part of the show. "They listen attentivelyand they'll go with you, even with a subtle story that is not easy to 'get. Someoneonce accused us of adding a laugh track on the radio series - they just couldn'tbelieve how the audience responded," Sheffer says. "Ridiculous! That is just whatthis audience sounds like; we don't add anything!"

Isaiah Sheffer.
